Volume 60 Issue 6 Fall 2016 The Telltale News From the Folsom Lake Yacht Club Next Up: Sept. 13 Membership Meeting Oct. 15 Work Party Nov Awards Banquet Nov. 25 Black Friday Cruise Find Details At: FLYC.org Cold Open So this is my last Cold Open. Or maybe not John Poimiroo has taken over the Telltale and may run this somewhere else. As has been widely or not so widely reported my family and I are leaving. My skiff has been sold, my house is being sold, and Four Sirens is for sale. My family and I are moving to Cambridge in UK as a new adventure. I will miss FLYC. I consider FLYC as a group my friends and some more like family. I have had a wonderful time racing, and camping in NY Cove, and sailing with the Bigs and Littles. I ve been goaded into buying a psychotically fast Skiff and a Santana 20. I ve introduced all three of my daughters to sailing on Folsom Lake. My oldest two daughters have each won events on Folsom Lake. I ve managed to get my name on a few pieces of silver and wood. But most of all I ve met and gotten to know amazing people. I ve had a great time with my friends at Folsom Lake. There are so many people to thank for making our time at the lake wonderful: Todd and Barbara (who are also starting a new adventure), Dave and Lanette, George Koch (RIP), Bob Backer, Mark and Stephanie (who every year open their house to fleet 12 and friends), Kerry and Joyce, Suna and Kim, John and Joan, Scott, all the Steve s (Steve G. Steve A. Steve A.), Mike and Madeline, Drake, Mel and Cathy, Gary and Karen, Beth and Teresa, Rick, Mike M., Jim and Lana, and Carl Werder. I m 100% sure this list isn t complete but it s the middle of the night There are also people to thank that crewed on Four Sirens for all our various campaigns (a non-exhaustive list): Christine Caldwell, Michelle Mahrt, Kim Geil, Theo Chilton, Stacy Werder (who raced against her husband on my boat!), JT Tyer, Mark Erdrich, Katie Deutsch, Jack Tatum, Eva Tatum, Ransom Burford, Amy Henry, Renee Fields, and Kerry Johnson (who jumped on as bow for my first regatta after breaking his Banshee). Also, Ryan Polli for giving Four Sirens her distinctive transom.
2 Katie and I both have to especially thank John Poimiroo for sharing Glory with her and giving her a great experience on the water, a good friend, and an amazing role model both on and off the water. I think most of all I m going to miss all of my adventures with and against Mark Werder. He has been both a great competitor and a great co-conspirator and a great friend. Ó Will Deutsch Vice Squad Craig Lee Dominates 16 th Steele Cup Craig Lee repeated, Aug. 13, as Banshee Pacific Coast Champion, winning his second successive and sixth Championship in 16 Steele Cups held at Rancho Seco Lake. In a dominating performance, Lee finished first in five of six races that day, trailing Charles Witcher only on the regatta s final race. Witcher, who has won eight previous Steele Cups, locked second place with five seconds and a first. Tied behind Lee and Witcher with 19 points each were Kerry Johnson and Jeff Nelson. On the final race, Johnson finished ahead of Nelson to take third. Nine Banshees competed for the Cup. The racing was endlessly fascinating and tightly contested with boats crossing the finish line, mere seconds apart. Recognized for his pluck and improvement throughout the regatta was Rob Cram, whose best finish was fifth, but at times sailed as high as in third, after a slow start. Sailing conditions varied between 5 and 10 mph and, as is typical of Rancho Seco Lake, varied wildly. Spectators on stand-up paddle boards, paddle boats and kayaks followed the racing, with at
3 least one boat saying the yellow boat (Craig Lee s) was the one they were betting to win the regatta. We all agreed, you don t bet against Craig when he s sailing that consistently. Steele Cup Results: 1. Craig Lee, 5 points 2. Charles Witcher, 9 points 3. Kerry Johnson, 19 points 4. Jeff Nelson, 19 points 5. Steve Galeria, 23 points 6. Gary Preston, 26 points 7. Tim Loomis, 34 points 8. Bob Baltar, 36 points 9. Rob Cram, 41 points The Steele Cup is the trophy presented annually at the Banshee Pacific Coast Championships. It is named after beloved Folsom Lake Yacht Club member Keith Steele who revived the Banshee class, established Banshee Fleet One and championed Banshee racing. His motto was, Be safe, have fun, win the race. Summer Series Rides Into the Sunset Called the Sunset Series, because its races are held in the evening, FLYC s summer series of racing was held on its four scheduled days, though was disrupted by announcements that boats would need to be pulled from their slips by early August. Still, three classes competed: Open Keel, Open Centerboard and Multi-hull, with 12 boats getting wet in 10 races. Mark Erdrich won the Open Keel class sailing his Santana 20, Fusion. Will Deutsch never missed a race during the series (matched only by Steve Galeria and Gary Preston), to finish as second place keelboat on his Santana 20 Four Sirens, trailing Erdrich by only four points. The Open Centerboard class was tightly contested, as well, with Galeria and Preston both sailing Banshees - separated by only five points. Top multi-hull boat in the two-boat class was Mark Evans on a Hobie 16. See full results at FLYC.org. Hard Act to Follow Will Deutsch is a hard act to follow. For the past several years, he has edited The Telltale and made it a compelling, interesting read. His knowledge of software and digital publishing made it look snappy and current. For the moment, I ve stepped in to assist, though FLYC needs someone who can take it on and publish occasionally (six issues a year), while having fun communicating club events. me, if you re that person. Ó John Poimiroo (john@poimiroo.com) Treasurer s Report Not much financial news to report, this month. The last of the Camellia Cup expenses were paid, as well as the yearly $200 postal box invoice, and a couple smaller items. Offsetting these were the receipt of some membership dues and we made a few dollars on the Centerboard and Steele Cup Regattas.
4 Along with everyone else, I was disappointed to see the pull date at the marina so soon, and then to have it moved up another couple days. My calculations, based on CDEC data, indicated that the original 8/5 date was correct. So, I don't know what's going on. What I do know is that requiring keelboats to be pulled so early from their slips is not a good sign for their future at Folsom, or FLYC. Some very difficult decisions may have to be made in the next few years. In the Mail Nothing noteworthy arrived this month--or last! The Bay and Delta Yachtsman, Cruising Outpost, and the yearly announcement for the Tahoe Concours d'elegance (long past) arrived. Though note the second weekend in August for travel planning to see these classic wooden boats, next year. The Concourse has posted a quality three-minute video at laketahoeconsours.com. Awesome old hardware They don't build them like that anymore. Ó Scott Frederickson Secretary/Membership Report FLYC welcomes four new members to welcome to the club this month: Tim and Debra Sisson and Ken & Melanie Blawat. Since the past Telltale, those new memberships were processed, with rosters and membership cards and burgees sent to the new members. Burgees have also been traded with Loch Lomond Yacht Club. Their burgee is in the clubhouse. As always, if you visit another yacht club and exchange your FLYC burgee on behalf of the club, let me know and I'll provide you with a new FLYC burgee. If you plan to go somewhere exotic and want to take along a FLYC burgee to exchange, let me know and I'll provide one. As previously, FLYC decals remain available for $3 each. Bidding Farewell As some of you may have already heard, Todd and I will be moving to Houston sometime in the first half of next year. We will definitely miss all of you and it has been a pleasure being the Secretary/Membership for the club these last few years. Unfortunately, this means we need a volunteer to take the job of Secretary/Membership and take possession of the four boxes of FLYC records. I should still be in California, the first part of 2017, to help with the transition. Everything I have generated as Secretary/Membership during my tenure is in electronic form and ready to be passed on. Please let me or any other member of the board know if you are interested. Ó Barb Craig Commodore s Report The Sept. 13 membership meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Roundtable Pizza at 2793 E. Bidwell St., Unit 100 in Folsom (off Broadstone Parkway). A presentation about the Trans Pac will be made by FLYC sailors Mark Werder and Steve Armstrong. Please plan to join club members at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Clubhouse (Brown s Ravine) for a work party that will winterize the clubhouse, assess improvements to be made to club equipment
5 before sailing returns to Folsom Lake, and reminisce about The club will provide drinks and pizza. Our annual awards banquet will occur on Sat., Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. cocktails; 7 p.m. dinner. A formal announcement with price and details will be mailed to all club members. See you there! Ó Suna Kneisley Banshee Beat The Banshees, as always, have been having a lot of fun this year getting together and racing in a variety of regattas all over Northern California. The fleet has three new members and the level of participation in the Banshee Lake Series (10 regattas) is the best it s ever been. To say the least, a lot has happened since we last reported the Camellia Cup results in The Telltale. Following is a brief summary of the Banshees having fun: Yosemite Spring Regatta - May The Lake Yosemite 'Spring Regatta' was great! Six boats six races and LOTS of wind [15 with gusts to 20]. Charles Witcher was first in every race; 2 - Wayne Cassingham, 3 - Jack Tatum (even with a broken gooseneck, 4 - Steve Galeria (only sailed 3 races too windy on Sat.), 5 - Kerry Johnson (broken thwart), and 6 - Rob Cram. [Detailed results for each race are available online.] Whiskeytown Regatta - May The Whiskeytown Regatta and weekend was a lot of fun. The weather was right on target: good wind in the morning, light wind in the afternoon, temp degrees. The racing was very competitive with several lead changes in each race. Although there were only two races Saturday there were three races on Sunday, all five were challenging. On the social side there was fun too as we all hung out together at the 'Banshee Compound. As you can see in the picture below [ all Banshees boats and in the background all Banshee campers]. A special thanks to Wayne and Dori for organizing and saving all the parking spaces, and to Dean, Daria, Charles, and Sherron for arranging their RVs, awnings and rugs to make a great social space for everyone. First place went to Steve Cassingham, 2-Wayne Cassingham, 3-Charles Witcher, 4-Dean Eppley, 5-Steve Galeria, 6-Tim Loomis, 7-Manny Rubio, and 8-Murray McLeod. [Detailed results for each race are available online.] Ó Steve Galeria Catalina 22 Fleet 4 Littles Have a Big Day A big thank you to everyone who participated in the annual Big Brother/Big Sister Sail Day on June 18. We were able to take 17 pairs of Bigs/Littles out onto the water. There was some breeze to make it a good day to be on a sailboat but, as usual, water guns and jumping into the lake stole the show. We were fortunate to have a good set of volunteers to take out boats and to put together and cook the barbecue lunch. So far, two
6 people have signed up to support the event next year, proving again that FLYC and Fleet 4 members have just as much fun as the kids. Ó Karen Preston, Event Coordinator; Hunter 270, Charmed Life Racing Report Safety first and last- Towing a Catamaran with my dually and installed cab-over camper recently, I was headed to Woodward Reservoir (near Oakdale, fed by the Stanislaus river). Having just exited Hwy 99 and completed a circuitous detour to get on Mariposa Rd., I was accelerating back up to 55 mph and rounding a slight right turn when, looking in my mirror, I saw some butt head starting to pass me on the blind turn. I called him something else when talking to Madeline. He sure got my attention then he blinked his lights, and suddenly he dropped back. That s better, I thought, thinking it was stupid to pass me, there. The road straightened out; then I saw some black smoke followed by some brown smoke and noticed he had dropped way back and was stopping. Commenting to Madeline about what I was seeing and checking both mirrors, I was puzzled by what was going on behind us. Then, realizing it was something important, I wiggled the steering wheel to wag the trailer (the camper is 8 feet wide and so is the boat) so I could see the boat/trailer that I was towing. I WAS TOWING. GONE! I told Madeline we had LOST the boat and trailer. She thought I was joking and didn t believe me at first. Finding a wide spot I did a Y turn-about and backtracked. This whole episode had taken less than ¼ mile. The brown smoke was clearing - it was dust, revealing our catamaran and trailer in a freshly plowed field. The boat still tied down to the trailer and the whole thing upright about 15 feet from the road. After making a U-turn and pulling alongside the trailer we got out to assess the damage and cause. First- the tongue and hitch were ok and attached to the trailer. 2nd- the safety chains/cables were attached to the truck???. 3rdthe third wheel, mounted on the tongue, was retracted and worn down to one quarter of a wheel. 4th- the ball was intact on the stinger. 5th- most importantly, the latch on the hitch was pointed STRAIGHT UP! We placed a yellow truck tie-down strap on the trailer and the truck and, with some help from the butt head who had stopped, pulled the trailer back to the shoulder of the road within reach of the ball. We hooked up the trailer and did more analysis, realizing of course that I had forgotten to lower the latch and insert a lock/bolt/clip to secure it. But then what happened to the safety cables??. They were attached to the tongue underneath, on one common bolt. But where was the bolt?
7 Turns out that when the tongue bounced off the ball the first thing to hit the road was the third wheel. The black hard rubber wheel was the source of the black smoke as it was dragging along. After the wheel was worn down enough, the bolt for the safety cables started dragging until it also wore down to nothing and released the cables. Lessons- Don t forget the latch. Mount safety cables/chains on the side or top of the tongue. Don t forget the latch. Don t call other drivers ALPHA HOTELS when they are trying to get your attention. Don t forget the latch. Don t forget the trailer wiring. Don t forget the latch. Do use a safety pin in the latch. Don t forget the latch. I won t go into the what ifs had it parted sooner. Safety first and last! Ó Mike Rayfuse, Race Chairman; Catalina 22, Sirius Beer Can Racing Beer Can Racing at Folsom Lake comes to an end! :-( Wed., Aug. 31 was the last day for informal Beer Can races on Folsom Lake. On Wednesday Aug. 17, Gary Preston and Steve Galeria gave Bill Martin and me a three-minute head start, and I m proud to say it took them 18 minutes to catch up to us! How ya liking us now, Gary? Truth be told, I heard that they stopped to get a massage and then a latte during those 18 minutes. Monte Whitefield, Membership Chairman; Catalina 22, For Sail Gary Preston and Steve Galeria on their Banshees, off the hip of Bill Martin s C22.
8 FLYC Photos Farewell Dear Friends FLYC bids farewell to Will, Tonya, Katie, Maddy and Emma Deutsch, and to Todd and Barb Craig, as they travel to England and Texas. We will miss your presence in the club and on the water and wish you all fair winds and following seas.
9 Steele Cup The 16 th Annual Steele Cup and Banshee Pacific Coast Championships were tightly contested with the bird boats clustered, at times, then sprinting across the lake. Sherron Hart joined an inquisitive audience to watch the racing, wearing a festive hat to match the occasion, while RC Chair Mary Niederberger called for six, unique courses that used every part of the lake and every imaginable sailing skill.
10 Big/Little Sail Big Little Sail is a cooperative effort of Catalina Fleet 4 and FLYC. Members of both sailing clubs provided sailboats and prepared food for big brothers and sisters and their littles. It was a great day to sail.
11 Cup Boat Regatta Steve Galeria was Cup Boat Champion at the annual Cup Boat Regatta, sailed on the Straits of El Dorado (Poimiroo home) in August. For his victory, Steve won an entirely new boat (held). Will Deutsch won a souvenir mug for his ingeniously designed cup boat (#695, 4 Sirens II). And, Stacy Werder shows that too much ballast was the design flaw that earned Drake Johnson the It s Amazing It Didn t Immediately Sink Out of Sight award, after his boat immediately sank out of sight. In Cup Boat racing, sailboats are made from Styrofoam coffee cups, straws, tape and pennies (ballast), then race in double elimination rounds.
12 High and Dry The RC Kayot is high and dry, as are the slips at Brown s Ravine on Folsom Lake. Each day, the lake level drops. At publication, the lake s level had dropped to 392.
