2 Page 2 THE FLYC TELLTALE Commodore s Column Todd Craig Hello, Fellow Members. February is here and it's time to get back in our boats and back on the water! Spring #1 is Saturday the 11th. Last time I checked there was some water in the lake and it was rising, so I hope we'll be able to get everyone out there. As always, be wary of submerged obstacles this time of year. Our February meeting has been moved to Wednesday evening on the 15th, from 7-9pm at Inland Sailing. Judging by the response on Facebook (now over 100 members), we can expect some new faces to join us. Mel Morrison is offering a presentation on how to get our boats ready for the 2012 racing season. There's been steady progress on the Clubhouse. The building has been painted inside and out and is currently being equipped with table space and storage for all of our needs. Dave Strain is planning another work party to install cement pavers under the patio which will give us a nice surface for our RC meetings and parties. This may take place on the weekend of February 18th so stay tuned to the telltale, FLYC website and our other media for detailed information. Speaking of parties, when the bulk of the clubhouse work is done and the weather permits, expect a serious housewarming shindig for our new FLYC home! I look forward to seeing you all on the lake and at the meeting this month. Todd Craig Commodore Racing Corner Dave Strain Living on the Racers Edge IT S ba ack! The series racing season, that is! Winter is the time to ready your sailboats for the series races. Checking your sails for stretch or small tears and get them ready for Series #1, Feb 11. Check for Race committee assignments. Even though there are 2 members listed to run the races, it actually goes better with 4. In addition to the series races, two big events of the year, the Camellia Cup and the TransFolsom are already in the planning stages. The State water Powers That Be are showing signs of logic when they seem to be saving more water than is usual. That is a good thing. As always, the more boats on the start line, the more fun there is to be had. See you on Feb 11. Treasurer s Report Scott Fredrickson January report.. While closing out the 2011 bookkeeping year, I ran across a suspicious envelope. Hmmmm...oh, NO!! It contains four checks and cash. From September. I got the Governor's Cup receipts and registration fees from Lanette at the Inland Sailing barbeque and apparently, had such a good time I completely forgot about it. Oh, well, what can you expect from volunteer (and partying) help??? That changes EVERYTHING! As I put the 2011 books away (again), it appears the club, after paying year ending bills, came up $216 short of breaking even. A perfect example of why Gary Preston, the previous treasurer, told me... The books are never closed. And a comment on the weather. The Mountain Democrat in Placerville ran a little article about weather history for dry years and in 5 of 7 dry Decembers the P-ville rainfall total for the year was in the range -- somewhat below the 39 average. Of the remaining 2 years one was 42 wet, and the other 15 dry. Rain dance, anyone???
3 THE FLYC TELLTALE Page 3 Camellia Cup News Lanette Strain The committee for getting our 46th annual Cam Cup underway has already started to work. Steve Galeria has agreed to be the CRO and the face for announcements. John Poimiroo will be the PR man. Stephanie Erdrich has already contacted a caterer and Ginny Getty is working towards ric wall hanging on the same night. One year Ginny won a kayak. A good bottle of wine might off-set a camping lantern. You just never know who is going to be the big winner, right Ms G.G? If you are stuck with no items or services to donate, restaurant gift cards, gift cards from Hart Sail Design, Inland Sailing or Morrison Marine, Catalina Direct or West Marine gift certificates are happily accepted. But, helping the club and having fun is what it is all about. Membership Update Lana Chang designing the t-shirts. Hart Sails has agreed to lend the tent again. Karen Preston is on tap for scoring. The NOR has been electronically mailed to clubs in our area. Registration packets will go out soon. Drake Johnson will be in charge of the beer wagon and the Rayfuses will be doing the Sunday Hot dog lunch. There are plenty more activities to be covered like selling tickets, handling registration, helping launch and retrieve boats at the docks, and race committee. We will need hands to put up and take down the tent. One other task, one that brings in money, is that of getting raffle items donated. If you want in on any of these jobs, do give me a call, Lanette, at CALLING ALL MEMBERS OF FLYC-CALLING ONE AND ALL Holding a raffle after the dinner of the Camellia Cup is not only fun, but also helps defray some of the costs in running a Regatta. If you have a business that could offer an item or service to be raffled off, please let me know. A mixture of fun and seriousness always makes the raffle entertaining. In the past FLYC has raffled off the flying monkey and a fab- Membership renewals are going smoothly. Currently, about two thirds of last year's members have renewed. Also, a message was posted on facebook in an attempt to try to get current facebook members, who are not paid members, converted to official FLYC members. It's still early in the year so I'm sure the renewals will continue to build in the next couple of months. I believe we should have at least 2 new members signing up this year (but hopefully much more). Please continue to get renewals in the mail! Thanks. FLYC on Facebook Mark Werder Hope everyone has enjoyed the many posts and coordination that Facebook has offered our club over the past two years. I feel it has been a successful way to connect our club to the community and thought I d share some interesting statistics: 1st Post: April 5, 2010 Current Members: 104 Individual Posts: 380 Photos: 156 plus countless videos and other links 100th person to join: Lisa Metcalf
4 Page 4 THE FLYC TELLTALE Clubhouse Update Lanette Strain Steve Galeria is like a man possessed. Not only him, though. Club members have been equally driven to be on the work crew that has changed the steel shed into a clubhouse. Admittedly, it is small, but mighty attractive. Steve has been there through it all, advising, planning, and hammering. Some new additions in the inside are lower cabinets, a peg board covered wall, and a pantry for storing tall bulky items. Steve and Dave are striving for organization and storage. Shelves will be added so that trophies can be displayed and Burgees hung. They will be adding a window film that darkens the room giving an extra level of security. The next project is to lay pavers under the covered patio area. If you are interested in helping, let Steve, Todd or Dave know. No date is set yet. Those many hands make light work. Plus, there will be bragging rights, to be part of a crew that did a mighty endeavor. Editor s note: You don t need to be a club officer to submit content for the Telltale, the publish date is typically around the 5th of the month. Articles regarding your experiences on Folsom Lake or surrounding areas are welcome. Send them to: FLYCTelltale@gmail.com Thanks, Mark Werder
5 THE FLYC TELLTALE Page 5 Catalina 22 Fleet 4 News Dave Strain Exciting things are happening for the Fleet 4 C22 club. The C22 Regional races will be held in conjunction with the Camellia Cup in April. The C22 Nationals will be held in June at Smith s Flat Reservoir hosted by Gold Country YC. Both of these opportunities offer fun venues and competitive on-the water- boat racing. Don Hare is the lead guy for the Nationals, Mike Rayfuse and Dave Strain for the Regionals. If you are interested in racing, or interested in helping, contact any one of these guys. Currently Fleet 4 is holding meetings, second Thursday of the month at the meeting room of El Dorado Hills Raleys store. This location is right off Hwy 50 and El Dorado Hills Blvd. Banshee Beat Steve Galeria January was a quiet month for the Banshees, so there s not much to report on. However, on February 11th, FLYC will be starting the racing season with its first race of the Spring Series. The second race will be on February 25th and then there will be three more Spring Series race days in March, which will provide a total of five race days for tuning up before the Camellia Cup Regatta April 14th & 15th. If you are thinking about sailing in the Spring Series, please remember to dress appropriately for the conditions. Although the weather has been very nice the water is very cold, so you may want to consider waiting for that perfect day or even waiting for the good weather in March. Looking ahead to the Camellia Cup Regatta please keep the following in mind: -It is never too early to register -The Banshees had the biggest fleet last year -Charles Witcher won the Camellia Cup last year in his Banshee -A Banshee can win the 2012 cup, but only if there is a large Banshee fleet Santana 20 Fleet 12 News Mark Werder Hope your winter projects are done, racing season is here! Without much rain, it doesn t seem like we ve had much of a winter so far. This will probably mean that we get late season rain and a reason to dig out those old foulies. One can always hope. Reaction is back at the lake ready to go as are several other boats. Mark Erdrich s boat has a new cover which should keep it looking nice all year. Mike Meyers boat has some new/different deck hardware and looks ready to go. Jim Goldberg s boat made it back to the lake after receiving an extensive non-skid upgrade. No excuses for crew falling overboard now. Todd Craig s boat never left but looks ready for action. Donald Little is looking into dry storage and getting his boat up to speed. Mack Bishop s boat is ready to go in dry storage and needs crew. Finally Jarian Westfall s boat is at the lake but missing the mast and rig. Anyone know the story there? Hopefully due to a refit and not any damage. As for Reaction, the winter projects came down to the wire but all complete. New rigging from Inland Sailing, new internal hatches (shaved 8lbs), new bin board, new toe rails and new cover. All waxed and back in dry storage. I m putting together a practice day for Saturday Feb 4 around 11am for anyone interested. We have a new foredeck who is also new to sailing and needs training. Possible raft up after at the center pin. First race is FLYC Spring #1 on Feb 11. See you there!! After the Camellia Cup, which is the first event in the Lake Series, the Banshees will be traveling around the state for some fun times at other great regattas. For example; Whiskeytown in May, Gold Country Regatta in June, and High Sierra in July, just to name a few. Like Cam Cup these events provide good racing and an opportunity for a great time to be with friends. I ll be taking a survey in late February to see who is planning to attend the Lake Series regattas, so start thinking about it. BANSHEES - Fun People, Fun Times
