We start racing this month. Hopefully you all got your boats and crews lined up. The lake is filling but the news is not all good. Call the snow pack anemic would be generous. At this point calling it a snow pack is generous. Hopefully we will have a wet cold couple of months. So far 2015 has given us the driest January ever recorded in the region. February is supposed to bring a more regular weather cycle but is not predicted to be especially wet. The El Nino conditions that were building in the Pacific Ocean are now gone. I hope to see everyone at the club meeting at our new meeting location at Round Table in Folsom on East Bidwell. Mel has made goon on launch ISC Racing to build new boats including the Banshee 2.0 boat. This year I d like to ask every member to remind past members that we are still here even on bad water years which there is every indication this will be. Ping past members to remind them how much fun it is to race on Folsom Lake. Cajole people to sign up to race Cam Cup. Boat Washing Policy To quote the slip renewal notice Folsom Lake Marine just sent out: The Dept. of Fish and Wildlife has said that it is illegal to let any type of soap or chemical enter Folsom Lake water. They say violators could be fined $25,000. You may wash your boat with just water and a brush, but you will need to bring your own hose. Page 2

Commodore s Column Mark Werder Hello FLYC members!! The real fun out at Folsom Lake is just about to begin. There is a constant buzz of s and calls while the FLYC board and several volunteers have been busy getting things ready for We had our first board meeting with almost all members in attendance, the docks are being prepared by the marina and Camellia Cup planning is well underway with some fun improvements for this year. Really, the only thing missing in January was rain. While it appears lake level wise that we are better off than last year, the mountains have very little snow on them. Let s hope to make up some ground (water) in February and March. As I write this, there is a hefty little storm on its way to Folsom. As always, a major discussion point of our board meeting was acquiring volunteers to support the upcoming events. I encourage everyone to attend the next club meeting and volunteer for something. It doesn t need to be a big role, everything from RC to bringing a post-race snack to selling raffle tickets at Cam Cup is helpful and appreciated. Any of the FLYC board members can help you find a volunteer opportunity. The calendar is jam packed for February and March!! Our first Spring Series race is just one week away and there are a lot of keel boats planning on attending. Along with the two races planned, we have a Race Committee training session scheduled for Sunday February 15th. The training session is useful for a refresher on RC duties along with a chance for new racers to see how the races are organized. As in previous years, anyone with a boat can also attend and use it as a chance to practice their starts. We also have our first membership meeting of the year on Tuesday the 10th. The new meeting location is in the Round Table pizza on East Bidwell and Broadstone Pkwy. See you there!! On a personal note, the new to me Santana 20 project is finished and ready for the first Spring race. Will Deutsch, Theo Chilton and I took her out for a maiden voyage in some decent breeze and she sailed beautifully. I ll fully admit, it was nerve wracking leaving the dock knowing that most of the line was new and untested but other than a cleat issue with the backstay, the new systems and hardware performed just the way they were intended. The Page 3

Secretary/Membership Report Barb Craig Memberships continue to arrive. Renew before the deadline on March 1 to ensure you are included in the roster. The membership form is available on the website and at the clubhouse. biggest surprise was the difference in feel driving the new boat. I could sail Reaction (old boat) blindfolded with one hand tied behind my back while the new boat moves and feels different. Time on the boat will change that of course and I can t wait to get her out on the race course. Mark Werder Commodore commodoreflyc@gmail.com You should be receiving renewal reminder s every month with the membership form until the renewal deadline of March 1, in addition to reminders in the Telltale. As always, you can also renew at the first club meeting on February 10 or even at the Spring Series #1 on February 7. Membership cards and roster for 2015 will be sent out in March. If you visit another yacht club and exchange your FLYC burgee on behalf of the club, let me know and I ll provide you with a new FLYC burgee. If you plan to go somewhere exotic and want to take along a FLYC burgee to exchange, let me know and I ll provide one. 5 Treasury Report Scott Fredrickson January Report... Another quiet month, only a couple checks for a couple hundred $ and a few more member checks in the bank, but things will be different next month. The rain that came in November and December gave us hope, but since then nothing. It is looking grim, but the lake level is holding at around 410, the same as it was for the Centerboard Regatta late last summer, so there is still hope for some sort of sailing this summer. Maybe next weekend. PO Box 156 There were two invitations in the mail, one from Point San Pablo YC in Richmond inviting our members to visit, and another for the April 26th Opening Day on the Bay events. The monthly newsletter from Lake Washington SC was packed with info about their future plans. A den of busy beavers, they are. But the most interesting item was an extortion letter from the Mary Evans Picture Library demanding $425 for illegally using one of their photos. No, I had never heard of it, either. After a significant amount of time to unravel the scam, and even more effort to track down the photo in question among thousands, including deciphering their photo ID coding system and manually altering internet URLs, I determined that it was a photo of the abandoned Grimalkin taken from inside a British CG helo during the 1979 Fastnet Race. I ve read the report and vaguely recognized the photo but not from anything FLYC has ever published. The photo was published here...and probably other places, NOT including the Telltale... Or, a Google image search for Grimalkin Fastnet Race will turn it up, along with hundreds of others Fastnet photos. I understand that it is NOT illegal to simply link to another address. That s kind of the point of the internet, isn t it? These people run software called PicScout that cruises the internet identifying pictures, cataloging addresses, comparing stuff (metadata??) to copyright licenses, etc. and ultimately sending letters demanding payment for using their photos, apparently some of which are actually public domain but how would the typical internet newsletter writer/publisher know that? I was surprised when the Commodore brought the subject up at the Board meeting. He and Will know all about the scam from their work with Ryan Polli of Apple Head Design, who has been doing our beautiful Camellia Cup and club graphics for a few years. Her work is pirated on a regular basis. It s easy to see why. Page 5

Banshee Beat Steve Galeria The Banshees have not been out racing much the past two months, but that doesn t mean there is not a lot going on in the fleet. Several members are taking the winter to refresh and tune up their boats to get ready for the FLYC Spring Series and the Camellia Cup Regatta, and Fleet One had its annual meeting. The annual meeting, which was held on January 17th at the Inland Sailing Company - also the home of ISC Racing, was a great success. It started off with a fun social hour; beer and other assorted drinks were provided by Mel Morrison. This was followed by a wonderful pot luck dinner, always a great crowd pleaser, and lead into the annual business meeting. A lot of items were covered during the meeting and so I don t go on for ever I ll summarize. A review of the Lake Series over the past four years showed that on average 22 boats participate each year. The 2014 Lake Series was won by Craig Lee; Charles Witcher 2nd, and Wayne Cassingham 3rd. The fleet added the Big Dinghy Regatta to the 2015 Lake Series; bringing the total to 10 regattas for the series. Re-elected to office (two year term) were Steve Galeria as Fleet Captain and Charles Witcher as Member-at-large. Mel Morrison said ISC Racing will host the National Banshee Class Website for the next three years; ISC Racing will build a separate website for the Banshee boat and parts. There was a discussion about the need for national class association dues. Special recognition was given to Keith Steele, Charles Witcher, and Sherron Hart for preserving and nurturing the Banshee Class. Mel Morrison said ISC Racing is building and acquiring Banshee parts; several of which are now available. The new deck Banshee prototype will be built over the next few months and then tested by several local sailors throughout The target date to start building new Banshee boats is spring ISC Racing is planning to build hundreds and then thousands of boats, and develop a national dealer network over the next 5-10 years. As you can see the Banshee Class is getting stronger each year and its future is very bright. Coming Events: FLYC Spring Series, February 7, 21 - March 7, 21, Big Dinghy Regatta, April 11 & 12, 2015 Camellia Cup Regatta, April 18 & 19, 2015 BANSHEES - Fun Boats, Fun People, Fun Times Page 6

Fleet 12 News Will Deutsch This is shaping up to be an exciting year for Fleet 12. We have a number of boats promising participation and a few new boats in the fleet. Reaction has found a new owner. It will be great to see the red boat stay on the lake. We have two fleet members that upgraded to new boats and everyone seems prepping for the new season. Several fleet boats have made trips down to Inland Sailing and the yard has been busy with work. I got to get warm up sail in on Two Step with Mark and Theo the other day. The wind was piping and we got to put the boat through it s paces. I had a bit riding on it as I speced and spliced most of the control lines on the boat. I was very happy that none of the lines failed to perform. We did have a bit of scare when on of the backstay lines was knocked from it s cleat. My first thought was that a splice had failed and that we no longer had a back stay, but we quickly triaged the situation and found the line out of the cleat. I ve gotten most of my needed projects on Four Sirens complete. I ve still got a few in the works and some ideas for new things that will make the boat easier to sail. On Four Sirens I replaced the removable tiller extension for a fix one, added a gross tune to the backstay, replaced most of the back stay lines with fresh AmSteel Blue, added new spinnaker halyard clips (make by Soak LLC), replaced the foredeck bungee, waxed the boat, built a new spinnaker pole bridle, replaced the failing launch wheels on the trailer, and ordered new genoa and main sheets. Two step has almost all new lines along with new halyard retainers make of Velcro made by APS Inc. Mark had a bunch of projects to re-implement all the things he liked about reaction on Two Step. We have a very real shot of having a large fleet at Cam Cup this year. To all other owners... come out and play! Page 7

Catalina 22 Fleet 4 Mike Rayfuse, Fleet 4 Racing Chair Life is like a roll of toilet paper - the closer you get to the end the faster it goes. Where did 2014 go? Well, Fleet 4 members attended several NorCal races, i.e. the Camellia Cup and the Trans Folsom all on Folsom Lake, and the Go For The Gold Regatta up in the gold country near Nevada City/ Grass Valley. The fleet was well represented at the Cam Cup, taking the top 3 places in the C22 division (Doug Brennan 1st, crewed by Gary Preston, Dave Strain 2nd, and Mike Rayfuse 3rd), and First & Third (Brennan/Preston 1st & Rayfuse/Rayfuse in 3rd) at the Go for the Gold. We had one boat Tim Hampton (Amata) in the Trans Folsom and it pulled in a resounding 2nd place among 3 boats. Kind-of-a slow year. Weather and the lake conditions (spelled DROUGHT) were some of the reasons for a slow year, however the prognosticators at FLYC seem to think 2015 will be a better year. Look-the lake level is up. Well, if it comes up too high it will only be drained to maintain flood reserve capacity. Of course, as the season goes on the reserve, limits decrease allowing a higher lake. So-pray for snow not rain; only the snow melt is going to fill the lake. Looking ahead we have the usual suspects; the Trans Folsom on , the Cam Cup on , Strictly Sail Expo on , and the Go for the Gold in June on By February I will determine which other races will count towards fleet awards in racing. Page 8

Used Boat Purchase Inspection Todd Craig Spring is a time of year when thoughts often turn to boat buying. Actually, if you re like me, it s pretty much all year long. It can be a puzzling process. There are so many choices. How do you separate the wheat from the chaff? Believe me, there is a lot of chaff out there! As a serial boat buyer I ve developed a checklist to very quickly determine whether a boat is worth a more detailed inspection. When you head out to see your next potential acquisition, take a good flashlight, a screwdriver with a hard plastic handle (for tapping) and be prepared to take some pictures for later reference. Bottom line: If a boat can t get past this quick check, walk away and move on to the next one. Outside: 1. Is the mast straight? 2. Are the keel and rudder straight? Sight along the back of the rudder and make sure it is in line with the keel. 3. Look for stress fractures in load areas: mast step, stanchions, anywhere rigging attaches, rudder attachments, keel to hull join. 4. Delamination: using the back end of a screwdriver tap around the deck and hull. Particularly near areas where there are deck penetrations or fittings. A sharp thwack sound is good. Dull thunk is bad. Imagine you are listening for new plywood and not cardboard. Check the rudder as well. 5. Condition of Gel Coat/Paint. Most gel coat can be brought back to some level of shine with work by the owner. Paint has a limited life span and will take much more time, labor and expertise to restore. Be aware that, unless it is in very good condition, paint will have to be removed before you can repaint it or restore the gel coat. 6. Good gear and rigging on deck is a plus, but I don t worry about it at this stage. Usually you can t verify it s age and have to replace it anyway. If a winch can be made to turn, it can generally be brought back to life. Inside: 1. Check the keel bolts if there are any. A little surface rust on the bolts is not a big deal. Considerable rust on the bolts is a big problem. Check for stress cracks around keel/ hull join. 2. Look at bulkheads. Danger signs are rot, water stains, cracks in fiberglass tabbing to deck or hull, enlarged holes where bolts go through bulkhead and structure of boat, and rusty bolts or chain plates. 3. Look for cracks in stress areas on the inside; particularly around the compression post (the mast step and keel step). 4. Swing keels can be hard to check. If you can see cable/winch mechanisms and bolts check all for condition. They can give you an idea what you re dealing with. Sails/Motor: Sails have to be new or nearly new for me to consider them value added to the boat. Anything over 5 years old adds no extra value in my opinion. Plan on replacing them. If the motor runs... great. Most trailer boats will do just fine with about 2 to 7 hp of motor and you can pick up a good used one or even new pretty cheap. I figure a sound motor in that size range adds about $500 value to the boat. Pass/Fail Pass/Fail depending on extent. Expect a repair. C o s m e t i c Page 10
