This is a unique 21 mile race. With the current weather pattern we ve been experiencing there should be a great turn-out and an excellent opportunity to set some records. But as I said this is just the first of many events. I m bringing up the special events so you have time to make plans and join in the fun with friends and family. I think you ll find there is something for everyone. Here s a short list of 1

coming events: April 8 & 9 Camellia Cup Regatta April 22 Boat Show (Alameda) May 6 Katherine Eavenson Women s Regatta June 10 Joe Cool Notes on Boats Sail* July 22 Big Brother/Sister Sail* Aug 5 Single-handed Regatta Aug 6 Lady & Tramp Regatta Sept Governor s Cup Regatta *More on these later, but just know that we need skippers and boats to host our guests. Don t forget to mark your calendars. If you want more details, feel free to call me. Last month s members meeting was another evening of casual visiting with friends, learning about sailing, and a few good jokes about sailors. Oh yeah, we named the oogabooga stick. No, we re not going to call it Steve. It is now to be known as the Staff Commodore. [You have to see it to get the full impact of the humor.] The next members meeting is April 11 th (2 nd Tuesday) at Round Table Pizza, Glenn & Riley Streets, Folsom, 6:30 PM. We re planning to have a visual presentation (pictures) of the Trans-Folsom Race and the Camellia Cup Regatta. Hope to see you there racing and at the meeting. Steve Received a letter from Monty Biles, member: Hey Steve: Thanks for the honorable mention in the Telltale. I don't recall the situation but, I didn't get to the meeting anyway. I am taking some real estate classes at Sierra College from 2p to 9:30p on Tuesdays, and I can't miss the lectures. This will keep me out of the meetings till after May. I really hate missing an opportunity to eat pizza. News here is that I had surgery on my right shoulder on March 13th. Spurs had cut into the rotator cuff and the bicep. This will keep me off the water for another 6 weeks and out of racing for two-three months after that (No High Sierra Regatta this year). I already sent my notice that I will not be doing any RC work till after mid May. I hope to get cruising crew for my boat at Vallejo City Marina after May, and I am still hoping to haul the boat to the San Juan Islands in August. Missing the races and all the good people. Monty VICE COMMODORE S REPORT April is one of the busiest months of the year. With Trans-Folsom (April 1 st, no joke!), Camellia Cup (April 8 th and 9 th ), and Spring Series #3 (April 29 th ), there s no excuse for you not to come out and play! We still need someone to run the races on April 29 th. I will not be there (we will be in Stockton at their One-Design 2

regatta), so I d like to get someone to volunteer soon since I will need to get them the RC briefcase before that date. fill it out, and send it in before the regatta. This will allow us time to look it over before the regatta. If you have any questions or concerns over these clarifications, please contact me. I ll close with a very familiar phrase (unfortunately), I need Race Committee Volunteers! Fleet 12 Report There are a couple of PHRF clarifications that were decided on: Regarding Whisker poles, One-Design class rules will supersede any PHRF restrictions. This means that if the class rules allow a longer pole than PHRF, racers will be allowed to use the longer pole. PHRF Certificates: Once again, our relatively simple requirement has apparently become a victim of misinformation. Our PHRF rules state that if you have an unmodified One- Design class boat which has a Southern California rating published for it, then you do not need a PHRF certificate. We will use the Southern California rating. If there is no Southern California PHRF rating, we will also accept any other PHRF certificate, subject to adjustments as we try to bracket your rating with other known ratings to come up with an accurate rating. In either case, we will ask you to fill out a FLYC PHRF form, basically so we can verify what you have. NOTE: If you are planning to race PHRF in the Camellia Cup, it is very strongly recommended you download the FLYC PHRF application from With more than 10 boats registered, it looks like we are going to have a great turnout for the Camellia Cup regatta this year. A few weeks later is another major event for the Santana 20 s. Stockton Sailing Club is inviting the 20 s to their Spring One-Design regatta. Since this is practically in the fleet s backyard, it would be really great if we could have a large turnout there too. Contact me or Lance Purdy for more information about this event, or check the fleet website ( for more information. Who s going to be joining the Fusion crew (and boat) up at Fern Ridge in Eugene for their annual Memorial Day regatta? After having to cancel last year s regatta due to a lack of water, this year s event should be better than ever! Mark 3

SECRETARY NOTES MEETING OF March 14, 2006 We met at the round Table Pizza on Riley Street in Folsom. Phil, Teresa, and Carl Hodgson met everyone at 6:30. George and Marie, Stephanie and Mark, Sherron and Charles, Craig and Mary, Karen and Gary, and Lanette and Dave were coupled up, with the bachelor table featuring John Austin, and Steve, and of course, the newly nominated Staff commodore, formerly known as the Ugga Bugga stick. Steve opened the meeting with a take-off on the Red-Neck comedy routines, You know you re a sailor if 1. you have a North Sail logo on your underwear! 2. you have a beer can crusher mounted to your mast. 3. you have broken boat parts in your car at all times. 4. you have a jello mold in the shape of your boat! The rest of the meting was pretty much business, interspersed with the Kings scores on the corner TV. FLYC members, if you have been torn, and can t stand to miss the games, the Pizza venue has both! Gary Preston passed around the various mailings that FLYC gets, including the Attitudes and Latitudes magazine. Lanette Strain passed out the new membership cards. PICYA sent a notice to remind clubs of the ban on copper-base bottom paints. Mark Erdrich called for Race Committee help. Steve ran the contest to rename the Ugga Bugga stick. Staff Commodore won out. Mark has reminders about the upcoming races, one on March 18, and the perennial TransFolsom and Camellia Cup events. There is an upcoming race for the Santana 20 s in Stockton. Phil Hodgson needs help finding Mark 6, a Blow-away, and 4 painting the clubhouse and picnic tables. One of the perks of membership to FLYC is the reciprocal privileges we extend, and are extended. The San Joaquin YC and the Emeryville YC both cordially extend privileges to FLYC members. Lanette reported that we have 47 currently paid members, now at 49. Rosters will be coming out April 1. Be sure to renew to be included. Gary reported that park passes are for sale. As a result of leasing 5 dock spaces, FLYC is entitled to 5 full park passes, and 5 Brown s Ravine only passes. Contact Gary for details. Fleet News Banshee fleet had a picture of a Banshee in Wisconsin, sailing? frozen? in a watery hole in the ice. Californians just have to get over their whine about so much rain. It could be worse. Santana 20 will have a class at the Cam Cup, and there have been plans for travel this summer, to Stockton, Oregon, Huntington, and San Diego. Open Keel is pretty quiet right now. Catalina 22 has their upcoming Nationals at Scott s Flat Lake, sponsored by Gold Country YC. Also Karen announced the Jazz on the water this summer, June 10, a co-sponsored event between FLYC and Fleet 4. Traveling Cruising: Karen announced a plan for cruising the Mediterranean this fall. Call her for details. John reported about the close-at-hand Camellia Cup plans. Austin has headed a raffle division; Mary said that preregistration was going well, 3 times more than last year by this date. The YC s in Northern California have been ed, inviting then to the event. It looks like the successful concentric circle courses from last year will be repeated. Instead of buying lunches for the DART team this year, it was decided to donate a sum of money to the DART team. They need

some cash support for a project, rather than food for their fine volunteers. IF you missed this meeting, as we missed you, call John Poimiroo to volunteer for the Cam Cup, call Steve Galeria for the TransFolsom, and just join in the fun. FLYC is YOUR club. Lanette BANSHEE FLEET ONE and FLYC Centerboard Fleet There is an interesting dynamic happening around Sacramento a resurgence of dinghy sailing. The C-15 fleet is growing, a Lido fleet is redeveloping, and the Banshee Fleet remains strong. As a keelboat owner, and former avid keel boat racer, it is easy to see the appeal of small boats. Small boats are easy to rig, easy to tow, launch and retrieve, fun to sail and easy to maintain. Away regattas in small boats are a real pleasure, allowing you to enjoy sailing, socializing and camping with good friends without worry about getting a slip, stepping the mast and wide load permits. Dinghy sailing rocks! Conspicuously missing from the list of dinghies are any contemporary designs to round out the FLYC centerboard fleet. The Banshee started production in 1969, the Lido started production in 1960 and the Coronado 15 started production in They are great classic designs and provide excellent one-design racing 5 opportunities. I d just like to see some modern designs included in the mix that utilize advancements in technology that have occurred over the last 30 years. Unfortunately Folsom Lake typically has light air conditions that are just not suitable for skiffs with trapezes (like the 49er or 29er) or boats with racks (Hoots). These would be great in Richmond, but not Folsom Lake. Is this why modern small boats are not on Folsom? Or could it be that people can t stomach the $6000 plus price tag for new dinghies? Some sailors have been discussing getting Megabytes to complement our existing fleets. The Megabyte is 14 3 long with a 5 2 beam, 100 square foot sail area and 130 pounds hull weight. This is lighter than my Banshee. The most desirable feature is the light weight carbon-fiber mast with sail track allowing the sail to be stowed for launching and retrieving. The mast is flexible so it de-powers the sail as the wind builds. Like the Banshee, the Megabyte has a comfortable sitting position. See for information. Could the Megabyte be a modern boat suitable for Folsom Lake? I sure hope so. The next question is how to build all the centerboard fleets without competing for sailors from each individual fleet. This is where FLYC comes in. As FLYC members, dinghy sailors automatically are grouped under the centerboard fleet. For years now, there have not been any centerboard fleets at Folsom except Banshees now that has changed. We have an even bigger group of sailors at regattas to socialize with! If you are interested in potentially purchasing a Megabyte as part of a group purchase, drop me an and I ll forward it on. Group purchases will typically provide boat discounts and significant reductions in the freight costs. I love sailing my Banshee but given the chance, I ll jump at the opportunity to get into a modern dinghy, as long as I can still sail and socialize with my FLYC friends. Dean

FLEET 4 RACING NEWS The Spring Series started in March with Spring #1 and #2. Both race days had more than enough wind for three races each, but the boat turnout was a little light. Each of the race days had three keel boats and three centerboards. The Rayfuses handled the race committee duties for Spring #1 while Dave Strain and crew sailed to a second and two thirds. The Strains returned the favor by doing race committee for Spring #3 and watched the Rayfuses sail Sirius to three seconds. Spring #2 was the first of four Cruiser points races for Fleet 4. We re now getting into the heart of the racing schedule. The Trans-Folsom Regatta will be held on Saturday, April 1, followed by the Camellia Cup Regatta on Saturday and Sunday, April 8 & 9. These regattas are the big events for Sacramento area racing, so make your plans to participate. If you don t have the entry forms, contact Mark Erdich at (916) or John Poimiroo at (916) Spring #3 will be held on Saturday, April 29. First shape is 10am at Brown s Ravine. The Catalina 22 Nationals at Scotts Flat Reservoir are approaching fast; June is not that far away. Join the National Association, get your C-22 ready and plan to join us in Nevada City. As in past years, there will be a Gold Fleet for the more experienced racers and a Silver Fleet for newer racers, so don t let a lack of racing experience keep you from the fun. Don Hare, the National Vice-Commodore, can be reached at (916) Tom 6 TREASURER'S REPORT FLYC has Annual California State Park Passes for car and boat, good through the end of March The discounted price is now $160 (full face value was $200). By comparison, a one-day pass for car and boat is $15. Gary OPEN KEEL The weather's improving, the lake is filling, the birds are singing, so lets all improve, fill (fill?), and sing our way out to the races beginning with the Camellia Regatta on the 8th and 9th of THIS month! Just because you don't own a boat of a big fleet like a S20 or a Banshee doesn't mean t hat you can't have fun on the racecourse. Just see how the handicaps work equalizing the

potential of different classes. Look what happened to me recently! In my Lido 14, I corrected out over two of the best Banshee sailors in the club. Musta been my crew, Scott Fredrickson. Our Vice-Commodore Mark Erdrich, is just itching to calculate corrected times for us and make us all winners. See you out there. SPRING ONE George The day began with high thin icy clouds with a ring around the sun, and a down slope, cool, NE breeze coming out of the south fork in the 3-4 mph range. The first race started with only 3 competitors; Mark Erdrich, Craig Lee and Dave Strain sailing an A 7 as the wind had backed to the NW and increased to about 5mph. Mark rounded 1 st followed by Craig and Dave. It seemed to be the usual parade, made interesting only by Mark getting a lift after rounding 7, taking the great circle route, while those following got the header. But the order didn t last as Craig passed Mark just before the 3 mark and held off Mark for the entire reach back to the finish line as the wind continued to be variable shifting from NW to the South Fork making it a one tack leg. Craig, Mark and Dave in that order, with only 3 seconds between Craig and Mark. 7 During the first race, 3 more boats arrived, those being George Koch on his Lido with first time crew - long time granddaughter (Melissa), Steve Galleria on a banshee, and Mack Bishop sailing a Santana 20. The wind had not established where it was coming from, but continued to back to the west and the course was changed to a C 5, however in the process of resetting the start line-while holding onto the buoy and directing Madeline on which way to go, the over-temp alarm went off on the motor of the Whaler. About this time I noticed Craig trying to tell me something, but, with the motor and alarm noise, I could not hear anything said and while trying to concentrate on our position relative to the center mark, I decided it was time to release the buoy and that s the last we saw of it ; I had drug the anchor into a deeper spot and the anchor weighed more than the float displacedmaybe this fall we will get it back! Maybe Craig was trying to tell me about a hole, where I let go of the buoy! Getting out the Whaler anchor and several pieces of line we were able to position the boat at the other end of the line and started race 2. It was a short, port favored line with just enough room for 6 boats and everybody being within 10 feet of the line at the start made for a very competitive start. The Santana s went left, the banshee s and lido played the middle and Dave went to the right. First to the 5 buoy was Mark followed by Mack, Craig, Steve, George and Dave. The leeward rounding saw no changes in place. Before the wind settled in there was one good shift that found Mark in the right place just above the committee boat. He worked the center of the course and got an incredible lift just above the CM that lifted him almost to the weather mark and lasted half way to the 5 mark. Mack went to the right at the leeward rounding and lost positions to both Craig, working the middle and Steve, playing the left side, and that settled it. No position changes and the finish order was Mark, Craig, Steve, Mack, Dave and George.

For the third race the wind had filled in and steadied from the 5 mark and had gotten strong enough to cause the Whaler to drag anchor - more scope was added and a course 5 A was called. A short, slightly port favored line again made the start interesting with everybody on time. Mark led the entire race with Mack moving up to 2 nd after rounding mark 5 in 4 th place. This gain pushed Craig and Steve back to 3 rd and 4 th, followed by Dave and George. The day ended warm and sunny with a building south wind. Cappuccino and cookies followed at the top of the Main Ramp. Bullets went to Mark, Craig and George for the day s work?. A Blow-by-Blow description of SPRING 2 Mike Rayfuse The Spring #2 got under way at 10:30 on the typical Folsom Floater. Fusion was there, manned by Mark, Austin, and John, along side of LidoCaine with Scott Frederickson and George and Sirius with Mike and Madeline. Two Banshees, Slick and Ug-A-Lee also made it. The Strains, and Mrs. Erdrich put up an A course, and Dave went to the first mark to shorten the course. Well, the Blow didn t come during this race! It was pretty, though, to watch Fusion finish with his parachute in full view! At the beginning of Race 2, the wind was beginning to Blow a little, lightly filling in the lake. As Committee blasted to alert the competitors to the upcoming sequence, we discovered that the blasts are called the MAINTAIN SILENCE HORN. That was to keep those chatty sailors under control. There was plenty of excitement as Austin performed his MOB to retrieve his excellent hat. By 11:30, at the start line, Race 2 got under way as the Banshees were being herded towards the start line by the bigger boats. It did not come to Blows, but the bigger boats definitely tried to intimidate the Banshees. Trust us, it didn t work. 8 Amazingly enough, on the flattest lake surface available, there was a huge roller wave, just as the horn sounded, which gave the Kayot a rock and roll kind of thrill to the beginning of Race 2. The Banshees had the same thrill, but they rode it out, and went on. They, along with the Lido, went low on the course to mark 5. The race was a non-match race between the Santana 20 and Craig Lee on his Banshee. By the time everyone got to mark 5, there was a dead spot, which eventually filled in. Erdrich, with his spinnaker could make headway, as the wind began to Blow a little harder. By the leeward mark, the boats had bunched up. Craig caught the leading edge of that Blow, with Mark nipping at his heels. They finished only 1 minute, 10 seconds apart, with Craig leading the way. The Lido and the Catalina 22 were neck and neck, for an exciting photo finish. By Race 3, a B7 course, the Blow had really started, and the lake was white capping. Who would have guessed? This start was tight, with every boat jockeying for a good position. Overhead, the Blue Angels performed for us all, so we watched them Blow by! This race was on. Unfortunately, with waves pushing the Kayot around briskly, the Blow-by-Blow accounting was abandoned. Suffice it to say that a good time was had by all. If you want the know more about the exciting racing on Folsom Lake, come on out yourself. Don t Blow it off!! Lanette Strain

NEWS FROM OTHER PLACES REAR COMMODORE S REPORT You have to get the paint in your hair before you feel the wind in your face. That is the saying many of us heard as a kid when we were enlisted by dad to help prep the boat in the spring. Nowadays with our fiberglass boats, not so much anymore. BUT, there are some items that could use a little TLC and PAINT around the club. I would like to schedule a work day or two to get some of these small projects done. The weather, however, is not making selection of a date so easy, but, soon we will put the word out and if you would like to help, the more help the better, the tasks will be done sooner, and the flow of sea stories and tales of races won and lost will make for an entertaining day.
