I don t personally remember any snow, but I have plenty of memories of cold, rainy weekends to start the summer will stand out as almost perfect. Seeing so many of you at the opening TGIF will also be a standout memory for this new Commodore! Karen and I enjoyed the delicious pizza and salad arranged by Kris and Rick Gartner. The expanded floor area in the Clubhouse gives us even more room for the all-important appetizers and desserts. Bar lines were steady throughout the evening but moved quickly with the fast service from Laurie Sellers and Jan. Fine tunes flowed from guest musician Dan Heath courtesy of Jim Geiger s summer music program. The Yacht Club logo items attracted lots of traffic and will return regularly. The Clubhouse certainly looked its best as a result of Vice Commodore Eric Brown s wellorganized clean-up day last month and the colorful plantings by Lisa and Baker s Acres. Thanks again to all the members who participated on the work day. Best of all, I caught up with winter happenings from existing friends and heard brand new stories from a number of Clear Lake neighbors who are new to the Yacht Club. It was a perfect Clear Lake evening! I hope everyone will take the opportunity to meet and welcome our new members. People really seem to prize the friendliness of Clear Lakers and the Yacht Club. We ll have final numbers from Jill Cox next month, but I appreciate her preliminary reports of healthy and timely Club renewals and growing interest in the many activities offered at the Club. Chris Hughes and the sailing group were out in force on May 26th to start the sailing season. Pickleball players, tennis buffs and ski club members get cranked up in June. Check out the Activities Calendar and take full advantage of your Club. Clear Lake Yacht Club is a unique and valuable community resource, truly Clear Lake s Gathering Place. I look forward to seeing all of you at the Yacht Club. Jack Horrell 2018 Commodore
2 V O L U M E 8 2 I S S U E 2 P a g e 2 TGIF INSIDE SCOOP June starts our full month of TGIFs, and it's a full month. Thank you members for bringing so many delicious appetizers to our first TGIF of June 1 is Italian Grille night with the favorite dish of Chicken Gusto and the works finishing with my favorite part of the meal, dessert, which is lemon filled cupcakes made in Auburn, Indiana! June 8 is our first Appetizer of the season. Some new members may be asking, "What is Appetizer?" It's a very relaxed night with no set menu/caterer. If you want to be part of the night, everyone brings an appetizer to share and enjoys new and old friendships while listening to live music. This week we have Jim Steel playing for us outside on the patio. We'll be doing this again on June 22 when Clear Lake's own family member, Aaron Howard (Getz family) comes back from Montana along with the second half of the duo, Sarah. There is no charge for Appetizer. We will be having more Appetizer s this year per your request, so to make them successful, please continue to bring your appetizers Friday nights. Wrapping up the month is Sutton's Deli from Angola and then igrandma's Food Truck. More info will be coming in weekly s. will start June 22 through July 20 with their fundraiser July 27. Clear Lake s Claire Reeves will be assuming the Kid's Craft Table that her older sister, Elise started a few years ago. Elise is getting married, so we are lucky that Claire agreed to fill her shoes. Look for her picnic table on the lawn. Kid's Craft Table is an activity to help keep the kiddos entertained with their parents supervision and Claire's direction. We have many new members joining the Yacht Club and many old ones coming back. If you see a new face, please make them feel welcome and introduce yourselves. It meant so much to Rick and me when we were new members. And new members, please introduce yourselves and let us know that you are new so we can get to know you and make you feel the welcome we have for everyone. Finally, as always, I am looking for new caterers, so if you find one you like and they will drive to Clear Lake, give me their contact info. Rick and I do this for you, the members, so let us know your comments, both good and bad, so we can satisfy your palettes. Clearly Friday s are better at CLYC Kris and Rick Gartner, Social Chairs
3 V O L U M E 8 2 I S S U E 2 P a g e 3 SAILING NEWS CLYC Sailing Opportunities For information please contact Chris Hughes and the Sailing School CLYCSailingSchool@gmail.com Sailing Camp SPOTS STILL AVAILABLE FOR THE JUNE CAMP! There are only a couple spots left in the June Sailing Camp. Call or to sign up. The 2 Sailing Camps this year are for kids ages 7 to 16. The first camp will be held in June on Monday, the 25 th and Wednesday, the 27 th from 1 PM to 5 PM. The second camp held in July, will be Monday, the 16 th and Wednesday, the 18 th from 1 PM to 5 PM. The July camp is full at this time. Sailing Club The first Saturday race had 13 boats starting and finishing. The sailors showed plenty of winter rust with several near collisions. In the end, everyone managed to steer clear, and Dan McArdle started the season where he left off, finishing 1 st! George Schenkel did the same by winning the FS class! Just a reminder that races are every Saturday at 11 AM. The Sunday Series sails in July and August only, starting at 11 AM. We are always looking to teach people how to sail by crewing on one of these exciting boats. The Sailors have also been known to have a good time at the Yacht Club before and immediately following a race. So come crew, stop by before for some friendly prerace banter, or stop by for the race results after the races. Adult Sailing Clinic We are currently looking into a date and interest in a 1-day Adult Sailing Clinic. If you are interested, contact Chris Hughes and the Sailing School. Sunfish Races Sign up now! This is an educational series with instructors on site before, during, and after the races to help and coach. The first season was a huge success, so sign up for the fun this year. All ages and abilities are welcome. This series consists of 4 races on Sundays in July: the 8 th, 15 th, 22 nd, and 29 th. Committee Boat Job Hiring! Our Committee Boat Helper will be retiring after this season. We are looking for someone to run the races for us going forward. The job pays well and takes 3 hours each Saturday morning from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The job consists of setting the race course, firing the cannon for the starting sequence, keeping track of the race results, cleaning up the course, and putting the boat away. Please contact Chris Hughes if interested. Chris Hughes, Sailing Chair
4 V O L U M E 8 1 I S S U E 2 P a g e 4 BAR NEWS It was great to see everyone back at the Yacht Club this weekend! What a gorgeous (and HOT) super Memorial Weekend! Hopefully this summer is going to be awesome as usual! We are offering some new drinks and bottle selections this summer! Stop by and see what s new! It s so nice to see everyone back for another summer! We are planning on having special drinks throughout the summer and also bar specials weekly! We will open on Thursday nights starting June 7 th. Stop in! Hours will be Thursdays 6-11 PM, Friday 6 PM- 12:00 AM and Saturday 7:30 PM-12:00AM. If you would like us to serve you in your own special cup, we are more than happy to do that! Also, we can empty out and refill your plastic cup! We strongly encourage you to recycle as much as possible! Thank You! Thank you to Brianna Slee for displaying some new Yacht Club wear this past Friday. We will be displaying it in the bar starting this Friday along with her cards. There are also some great cup selections! Check it out! Please remember to get your membership forms in! We love new members! As a reminder, Indiana Law prohibits accumulating bar tabs. You can run a tab for the evening, but you must pay your tab before you leave the Club. Payment can be via cash, credit card, or personal check. If you forget to pay your tab as you leave, you will need to pay your tab before you will be served the next time you come to the Club. Thank You! We are looking forward to seeing everyone! Jan, Laurie and Bill TENNIS We are looking forward to seeing old and new friends on the tennis courts and hearing the thwack of the ball. There s nothing as nice as getting out on a cool morning, surrounded by nature and playing some friendly tennis. If this sounds like fun to you, but you need a partner, just show up on Saturday mornings at 9:00 at the Clear Lake Yacht Club tennis courts. In July, Youth Tennis lessons will be held the weeks of July 9 th (M, W, F) and July 16 th (T, Th) from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. If you have any kids or grandkids aged 7 and up who d be interested in learning tennis and having some fun, please contact Jan Matasick (jmatasick@gmail.com) or call These are open to kids 7 years and up; they do not have to be Yacht Club members. We are also looking for more volunteer coaches, so please contact Jan Matasick if you can help out. Jan Matasick, Tennis Chair
