1 From the President Paul Murphy RGSTC Members, I d like to begin by extending a special welcome to our new members---in this, our 50th Anniversary Year! And for our returning members, I know we look forward to Memorial Day weekend and the official start of the pool season. While we don t like to see members leave or choose inactive status, we re always pleased to bring in new families each year. To get to know our new members, please mark your calendars and plan to join us the evening of June 11 th for our Welcome New Members social which will also feature Trivia Night. On a personal note, I m excited and humbled to once again serve as your President. Riverside Gardens Swim & Tennis Club is special in many ways. It s the summer hub of our community and a place everyone can come to meet friends and family, exercise and relax. We have another great Board assembled and always welcome your feedback for ways to improve the Club. We ve renewed our contract with Mark Murray and Mount Vernon Pool Services to manage our pool this summer. Mark and his team are very familiar with our pool and will make every effort to ensure this pool season is enjoyable and safe for everyone. I look forward to seeing you Opening Day, May 28 th. 2 Buildings & Grounds Report Cindy Anderson Save the date: Spring Work Day at the Pool will be Saturday, May 14 from 10am-5pm. Want to know where the spare propane is stored, where all the found goggles end up, how about the best place to store extra bags of ice for parties at the pool? Give an hour or two to your pool and I guarantee you will feel more at home this summer. The workday will start with coffee and the moving of all the furniture back on to the deck and will end with beers on the lounge chairs. Pool policy is that you get a $50 refund if you help out for 4 hours, but the coffee and beer is yours just for coming out! Lockers at the Pool: Never be without sunscreen, swim goggles, or concession tickets: the outdoor lockers in between the bathrooms are available for seasonal rental. Rental fee is $20. Lockers will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Make your selection during the Spring Work Day, and secure the perfect space for you stuff, or Cindy Anderson at ride4thefunofit@gmail.com. 2

3 Operations Report Martin Scanlon Welcome to the 2016 season! There are enhancements to facility operations this year, all intended to make RGSTC more efficient and support member/neighborhood needs. Baby changing tables have been installed in the both bathrooms. A notification board will be installed at the entrance to keep members up to date with social event and swim meets. The ever popular kids slide has been replaced and an upgraded PA has been installed. Lastly, free WiFi will now be available for members. I am also pleased to announce that Mt. Vernon Pool Service is returning to manage our lifeguards. Your lifeguard team is led by Mr. Mark Murray owner and president of Mt Vernon Pool Service. Once life guard hiring is completed, we will have staff pictures displayed at the office entrance to ensure members know who their senior manager and lifeguards are at any time. Please be sure to introduce yourself to the new team and ensure your family is familiar with 2016 RGSTC Rules and Regulations (see website at If there are other questions, concerns, or suggestions please me at operations@rgstc.org or call me on my cell phone ( ) Similar to last year, when you enter this pool or tennis areas you will enter a digital code (your membership #) at the office, and your family portrait will display for verification. Guest tickets will be collected as needed. For member/guest entrance to the tennis courts outside of open hours, contact the Operations or Buildings and Grounds Board members for access requirements. I am happy to announce that Morning Swim will be available again this season on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:00AM to 8:00AM. The start date is tentative for June 13th. Morning swim is free to members. Swimming lessons are also available through Mt Vernon Pool Service but the schedule has not been determined. If members have a preference on dates and times please contact me. Security is always a concern, highlighted by various acts of vandalism the past year. To address this, the pool and tennis grounds will be secured at closing time and the parking lot gate secured overnight. It will be re-opened for the first event of the morning session. In past years, we have not been consistent with pool access via the gate at the Guard Office. In general, county code requires access to the pool area via the bathrooms. However, RGSTC does allow members with strollers and large coolers to use the gate at the Guard Office for more convenient access. We appreciate everyone honoring this policy. The Party reservation procedures have been updated to provide clarity and to expedite your planning. Applications are available via the website at Plan early to ensure pool availability! Concession Tickets will be available for purchase at the Concessions Counter on the opening weekend and throughout the season. Tickets are $1 each, sold in multiples of 10, and can only be paid for by check, made out to "RGSTC". The lifeguards cannot accept cash or make change. Let's have a fun filled season without incident. Remind your children of the rules; please obey the Lifeguards and various signage around the club. Enjoy! 3

4 From the Swim Team Mara Stengler & Melinda Long We are very excited to kick off the 2016 Tsunami Swim Team season! This year, you can register for Riverside Gardens Swim Team on line, using this link: Riverside Gardens will be in Division 6 this summer. We re pleased to announce all of our coaches from last year will be returning! The 2016 Tsunami Swim Team kick-off will be at the pool on Memorial Day, 5/30 from 4-6 PM. Sports Fair will be on hand selling meet and practice suits and other gear. We have a new team suit this year so this is a great time to purchase your swimmer s new suit. There will also be an important parent meeting at 5 PM. You ll meet the coaches and hear what you can expect this summer season. We ll be asking each of you to volunteer to help during the swim season, so please stay tuned for more info! Afternoon swim practices will start on Tuesday, 5/31. Morning practices will begin on Monday, 6/27. We look forward to seeing everyone at the pool on 5/30 for the parent meeting. Go Tsunami! Membership Update Don Mueh & Art Gauthier RGSTC continues to be the pool to belong to! Once again our membership is at full capacity and we have a waiting list. This summer we are welcoming about 25 new families if you see someone you don t recognize take a moment to welcome them to our pool family! Our online system of managing the pool s applications continues to work well and we are continually fine tuning the system to make it even better! This summer we will be adding the option to have up to 3 accounts listed for each membership so that pool s will go to every account that you designate. Our IT specialist Travis Gianchetta will be sending out instructions soon on how to bundle your accounts. We d also like to remind all members that we need a fairly recent photo of all members listed in your membership for the office check in computer-please them to: membership@rgstc.org While we'll have a limited number of printed membership directories available in the pool office on a first-come-first-served basis, membership information can always be found on the pool's website ( as well as the ability to fellow members when logged on to your account. 5 Tennis Team News Kelly DePumpo & Monica Mulvihill We are looking forward to the upcoming 2016 tennis season and serving as your Junior Tennis Team Representatives. Our head Coach Position this year will be filled by a neighbor and familiar face, Carly Mulvihill. Carly just finished her second year at the University of Virginia. She played on the varsity tennis team at West Potomac for 4 years. This is her first year as head coach after spending two years as an assistant coach with the RG tennis team. She has also coached elementary school children in the Charlottesville area. She has been a member of the Riverside Gardens tennis team since she was 8 years old. Returning this year as an assistant coach will be Perry Griffith. Perry just finished his first year at the University of Virginia. He has been an assistant coach the last two years for the RG tennis team. He played #1 and #2 singles on the Riverside team in past years and has also played #1 singles and doubles for the Old South Country Club in Lothian, MD where he served as tennis camp counselor. This year, we also have two other assistant coaches who have a great deal of experience with the Riverside Gardens Tennis Team. Halsey McHenry and Ann Johnson are joining the coaching staff. Halsey just finished his sophomore year at West Potomac High School. This year he played #3 singles and #1 doubles on the West Potomac varsity tennis team. He has also been on the Riverside Gardens tennis team for 8 years. Ann Johnson is going to be a senior at Bishop Ireton High School in the fall and she s very excited to start coaching in addition to playing on the team. She has really enjoyed being a part of the Riverside Gardens Tennis team and is looking forward to working with all the kids. The Riverside Gardens Tennis Team will again participate in the Mount Vernon Community Tennis League. The team is open to players between the ages of 8-18 years. Registration will be done online again this year, so there are no forms. If you are interested in playing on the team, please visit our website for all tennis information. Make sure you log in to your RGSTC account, so you can locate the tennis link. Choose the Junior Tennis Tab. Tennis Team practices will begin Tues, May 31 and will be held during after school hours. After the school year ends and throughout the tournament season, tennis team practices will be held in the morning hours, three days a week. 5

Clinics are coached by Carly, Perry, Halsey and Ann. The clinics are divided into four week-long sessions beginning the week of June 27. You can sign your child up for as many weeks as you would like. More clinic information and forms are on our website or you can visit the tennis table on Memorial Day Weekend to learn more. We will be there on Saturday, May 28, 11:00-1:00 pm. Private lessons are also available from all of our coaches. Please contact them individually for specifics. We are excited to have a strong, enthusiastic coaching team and know there will be lots of good instruction and fun! 7 News from the Social Chairs Meagan and Kevin Consedine Well, we certainly have a tough act to follow. The Three Amigos (Bob, Bob, and Bill) have been fantastic social chairs for the past few years and we are grateful for all of their tips and advice for this summer s activities. We look forward to continuing the great RGSTC tradition of fun for the whole family as well as some adult time throughout the summer. Our first family event is the ice cream social on Saturday May 28 at 2PM come out and welcome the summer with old and new friends! Along these lines, our first adult event is a Welcome New Members Party with some pub style trivia get your competitive game on, stack your teams come prepared for some stump questions. Back by popular demand: Food Truck Thursdays will run from June August. If you have a favorite area food truck, please send us your recommendations as we are still finalizing the line-up for the summer.
