ATTENTION LAP SWIMMERS: Monday maintenance has been moved to Tuesday! Tuesdays we will open early at 6 AM! (This will last as long as there is demand. Be sure to thank your morning guard!) We will be closed EVERY TUESDAY from 8-11AM. Beginning Monday April 9 th lap lanes will be unavailable between 5-7PM. Priority has been given to the swim team Monday- Friday from 5-7PM. Please plan accordingly and thank you for your support. From The Desk of Sean Horan, Eichler Manager Greetings from your friendly neighborhood swim & tennis club! If you liked the crab feed, be sure to check the Splash and Volley each month for upcoming events and gatherings, like our upcoming Ladies Bunco night. We hope to continue your favorite Eichler traditions, then sprinkle in some extra fun and create some new favorite activities. Please be advised that the pool and deck will be closed as we repair and upgrade our pump room equipment, Wednesday April 25 through Sunday April 29. During this time, the tennis courts will be available for play, but you must have a key to gain access to the courts. Members may purchase a court key from our staff for $10. Details about the construction will be listed in the May Splash and Volley. Any new member who has been unable to schedule a new member orientation should call to schedule an appointment. Finally, if you would like to be added or removed from our Splash and Volley list for this summer, please send a brief to eichlerswimandtennis@gmail.com asking to be added to the Splash and Volley list. All Swim Team newsletter (Gator Communicator) requests can go through the website at For those of you who have disappeared for the winter, we hope to see you again soon! In a world of industrialized clubs, Eichler stands out as a true community club. Even if you re too young to feel nostalgic about the 1950s, I m sure you ll agree that the club is warm and approachable, a place where we can relax among friends, family, and neighbors. For myself, the chance to literally bump into my grandchildren in the pool is a kick! Every Eichler president stands on the shoulders of those who came before him or her. In my case, following Lynn Magill is a pleasure. Lynn led us through a major transition in ways that most of us cannot appreciate: the hours she spent on club management are truly staggering. The club s condition is very healthy: we have full membership (and a waiting list!), a new Club Manager in Sean, a new accountant in Susan Chin, and a core of very dedicated member volunteers who are serving on the board, on board committees, and on the swim team. We also have a robust swim team program. Even for those of us who are too old to have our kids in swim team, the Gators are a great attractor of new members and in a very real sense represent the club s future. I would like to continue in the tradition of Lynn and other past-presidents by doing what I can to preserve the core strengths of the club and to improve the foundation on which it rests. We will want to review our governance documents, particularly our by-laws, to be sure that we can operate the club most effectively. We will want to stay on top of our facility needs, since we have an aging club that might need some sprucing up. We will want to create more volunteer opportunities for our members, so you can become involved in the club in ways that are meaningful to you. I m looking forward to both the challenges of this position and the opportunity to meet those of you I don t know. 3 A Volley From Conrad CONGRATULATIONS: Two Eichler kids are playing for their college teams: Alex Klein competes for Chapman University and Lucas Fodor for Lewis and Clark college. Nice going! SUMMER SCHEDULE: As a reminder, this summer I will be offering several different instructional programs. One will be a small group clinic program (four students per class). The one-week camps will meet Monday through Friday. The two week camps will meet Monday through Thursday. Both are offered in half-hour (recommended for young beginners) and hour classes. Registration forms are available on my desk in the clubroom, a printable version that can be downloaded on the club website and I can also you one. For intermediate to advanced players there will be two drop-in clinics on Monday through Thursday. The younger intermediates will meet 1:30 pm to 3 pm and the older players 3 pm to 5 pm. Fees for the 1:30 pm Clinic are $18 for members ($21 non-members) and for the 3 pm Clinic are $20 for members ($25 or non-members). Players from drop-in clinic groups can be part of our Eichler Team, which participates in Friday afternoon intra- and interclub events. Fee for Friday events, which are held 1 pm to 4 pm, is $10 ($15 for non-members, if space is available). In addition I will still offer private and semi-private lessons for juniors and adults, typically in the mornings and late afternoons. Forms for all junior summer tennis programs are available to download from the Eichler website ( or can be found on my desk in the clubroom. USTA SEASON: The men s team has started its season. The home match schedule is posted in the tennis case and on the website. BALL MACHINE: The club has a ball machine that is available for use by members. There is a one-time fee of $25. Just contact me for a quick demonstration and to receive a key. COURT WASHING SCHEDULE: Just a reminder that one set of courts is washed every Tuesday afternoon. Please contact any of the following swim instructors to schedule your lessons, or, stop by the club to learn more. Cancellations must be made 24 hours in advance. Any cancellations after 24 hours will be charged. Be sure to contact your instructor directly if you need to cancel. Please pay for each lesson at or before the time of the lesson. The late fee is $10. If you are paying in cash, please note that instructors cannot make change so please have exact change. Please put cash in an envelope labeled with the instructor's name, your name, and the date. You may also write a check, payable to the name of your instructor. Payment may be put in the Eichler General Mailbox, near the club entrance. 5 Gator News It s Gator Time! We are off to a great start for the 2012 Eichler Gators. We had a very busy placement week in March -- over 50 new Gators! On April 9th, our swim season "officially" started. Coaches Sean, Julia and David, as well as some of our Junior coaches are getting the fundamentals down and getting our Gators in shape for the season. New Gators are welcomed any time -- see Coach Sean for more information. This Sunday, April 15th is our 2012 Eichler Gators Swim Team Brunch (11:30 am for new families, followed by the noon potluck for everyone) Bring easy brunch food to share (bagels, deviled eggs, fruit, etc.). The Swim Committee provides orange juice, coffee, and plates/ cups/utensils. This is a great opportunity to meet other families and hear more about the 2012 season. Online registration is open!
