Agenda Officer and Committee updates Nominations & Voting for New Officers 2017 Budget & Membership Dues 2016 Activities review Proposed Amendment to NYC By-Laws: Under the current By-Laws, there is no provision for resignation, termination, or excess absences from Board of Directors members. The proposed addition of a new section to Article VI would clarify how to deal with these situations. Section 6. Resignation from the Board shall be in writing and received by the Secretary. A Board member may be dropped for excess absences from the Board if the member has three unexcused absences from Board meetings in a year. Excused absences are defined by a notification to the Secretary of an expected absence before a scheduled meeting, and will be recorded as such. If the Secretary is not notified in advance of a scheduled meeting, then the absence will be recorded as an unexcused absence. A Board member may be removed for other reasons by a three-fourths vote of the remaining directors. 4 Fall General Membership Meeting Saturday, November 12th All members are encouraged to attend! Please join us for our end of the year membership meeting. Brief officer and committee updates will be presented. Floor nominations with discussion and voting for 2017 officers, budget, and dues will also be on the evening s agenda. Please come be an active voting member of Nawiliwili Yacht Club! The Board of Directors will be offering a complimentary dinner to all members in attendance. We will be serving: Grilled Chicken, Caesar Salad, a variety of sides, rolls, and dessert. No host bar will be available. Cocktails 5:30 to 6 pm. Dinner served 6 to 7 pm. Meeting 7 to 8pm. There will also be a great slide show of photos taken throughout the year, as well as the 50/50 drawing & the $191 Progressive Pot. You must be present to win the Progressive Pot! Mahalo, Secretary, Charlotte Ross nycsecretary.charlotte@gmail.com Racing News Halloween Costume Race & Party Normally, it s not a surprise to see strange characters roaming the docks at the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbour, but on Thursday, October 27th something was different. Halloween characters were rigging their boats for the last race of 2016! The winds were fierce out of the NE, and seven boats headed out to the start line. When the start horn sounded, all the boats screamed like banshees and took off for Kalapaki Beach. It was another scary start with the usual aftermath of carnage. could be seen working the jib sheets together it was surreal. Fast Company had replaced its crew with tattle tails which gave them an advantage going to weather. OZone had the team from Ghostbusters armed with proton ray guns as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man sat on the weather rail. Coyote was being sailed by the Blue Man Group who was evidently here on vacation after their successful Las Vegas tour. Weatherly had life-sized Crayons making their mark as they tacked up the harbor. Lelele was bedazzled with the Neverland theme, pirate Captain Hook was at the helm with Peter Pan and Tinker Bell as crew. Papa A u sported the usual nefarious crew. As the fleet converged on R2 buoy they must have entered the Twilight Light Zone known as an area where objects don t follow the Laws of Physics (and some racing rules) and weird unexpected things happen. Suffice it to say, the Blue Man Group came, they saw, they forced the Ghostbusters to retire from the race (to paraphrase a line from Ghostbusters). Trick or Treat, it was Hillary and Trump winning the race as Speedy won PHRF honors with Speedy had the best start of the fleet. On board, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump Fast Company in second,

5 followed by Coyote in third. Halloween Race brought to you by the Mole People & Friends Club Open had Weatherly in first, Papa A u in second, Once back at the haunted clubhouse, crews enjoyed a festive dinner hosted by OZone and catered by Mark s Place. The esteemed judges tallied the results for the best costumes and bottles of Halloween wine were given out as awards. Club members then danced away the night as Halloween had officially arrived. 7 Awards Party The Race Committee will be presenting the 2016 Race Season Awards Party on Thursday, November 17th at 6 pm. We have a fun night planned for everyone: We are doing something new this year! Thought all the competition was over? No way!! We are asking each boat to decorate their own tables however they so choose. Crews, get those creative juices flowing because each boat table will be judged, and the winner will receive a prize!! Have fun, and go for it!! The club will be open at 5 pm so everyone will have plenty of time to get your tables ready before 6 pm. We are asking each boat to bring two (each serving 20) heavy pupus to share. Of course, all family members are invited to join in on the fun! If your boat has a large number that plans to attend, you could bring an additional pupu if you feel that it is needed. The no host bar will be available. During our cocktail & pupu hour (6 to 7 pm), we will be showing a slide show from the entire season! Everyone can reminisce, and enjoy the fun times throughout the year. Then, our Rear Commodore Kevin Arndt will be presenting those hard fought for awards! All non-racing members are welcome to join in on the fun! Please bring a pupu to share. Mahalo, NYC Race Committee Gene Wells Memorial Race Series Each race of this series saw some serious winds and fierce competition. Two of the races had ten boats out on the start line! Kato, an Olson 30 owned by Kevin Millett, is new to the NYC fleet and started participating in race #5. Kato is getting dialed in by the crew and skipper and looks to be a contender in next year s races. The final results had a PHRF first place tie between two Olson 30 s with 10 points each Fast Company and OZone. Fast Company took the PHRF series honor by having four first place bullets! v PHRF 1st Fast Company (10 pts) 2nd OZone (10 pts) 3rd Bonjolea II (16 pts) v CLUB 1st Trinity (11 pts) 2nd Weatherly (14 pts) 3rd Speedy (35 pts) Offshore Race Series The last Skippers Choice Race on Saturday, October 8th, had Kato, Bonjolea II, and Speedy on the start line. The day was gorgeous with knots of wind under sunny blue skies. The course was a downwind leg to the Z buoy, then back around G11, then an A course. Kato won first place with a corrected time of 2:08:13, then Bonjolea II with a corrected time of 2:11:41, followed by

8 Speedy with a corrected time of 2:14:02. The ten race series had three no race days due to adverse weather conditions. There are two throw-outs for this series which gives the following final results: v PHRF OPEN 1st Papa A`u (12 pts) 2nd Speedy (13 pts) 3rd Kalewa (14 pts) v HRF MONOHULL 1st Speedy (11 pts) 2nd Bonjolea (11 pts) After tie breaker rule A8.2 3rd Bonjolea II (12 pts) v CLUB OPEN 1st Speedy (11 pts) 2nd Kalewa (14 pts) 3rd Papa A`u (15 pts) Kevin Arndt Rear Commodore Quiz 27 Two starboard-tack boats, L and W, are approaching the race committee boat marking the right-hand end of the starting line to start. When there are 15 seconds before the starting signal, W overlaps L to windward from clear astern. L luffs and W is able to keep clear. The starting signal is made. With L head to wind, W does not have room to pass between L and the race committee boat. W tells L to bear away immediately to her close-hauled course, but L continues sailing head to wind thereby forcing W onto the wrong side of the race committee boat. L then bears away and starts. W circles around to start and protests L for denying her room at the starting mark by sailing above close hauled after the starting signal. You are on the protest committee; how would you decide this? 2016 Sir Thomas Lipton One Design Challenge Cup The Sir Thomas Lipton One Design Challenge Cup was held on Saturday and Sunday, October 22 and 23. NYC challenged for the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup trophy the weekend of October in Kaneohe. Makani Kai Yacht Club, the defender, held a great regatta with the assistance of Kaneohe Bay Yacht Club. There were ten clubs from around the state vying for the Cup. With breeze in the 16 to 22 knot range, the start line was lively with ten Cal 20 s fighting for position. Affectionately known as pigs, helming a Cal 20 in 20+ knots is like driving a semi truck w/o power steering. NYC, sailing Oink, was represented by Jim Saylor, Tess Moeller, and Risa Whetsel. Jonathan Moeller added much needed rail meat on day one. We came home with a fifth place for the regatta and took some comfort in having been beaten by a national champion, a State Cal 20 champion, and two Cal 20 Lipton Cup champs. A good time was had by all. Jim Saylor ANSWER Boat W s protest is disallowed. L, as the leeward boat, is the right-of-way boat throughout the incident under rule 11, On the Same Tack, Overlapped. When she luffs (changes course), rule 16.1, Changing Course, requires her to give W room to keep clear, which she clearly does based on W s performance. Before the starting signal, L has no limit on where she can sail; i.e., she is permitted to sail up to head to wind, even when overlapped by just a couple of feet on W. The only rule that could potentially require L to sail no higher than her proper course after the starting signal is rule 17, On The Same Tack; Proper Course. However, rule 17 only applies when L becomes overlapped to leeward of W from clear astern. As this is not the case, rule 17 does not apply and L breaks no rule by continuing to sail head to wind after the starting signal.

9 Kaua`i Sailing Association Physics of Sailing KSA teamed up with Kaua`i Community College and Steve Taylor s physics class to explore Bernoulli s Principle, and Newton s 3rd Law. During a lecture session at KCC, the students were introduced to the concepts of how a sailboat works. The class then had a field trip to the Yacht Club and put their new theoretical knowledge to the test. Each student sailed in a Topper and experienced first-hand how to put classroom physics into action! A total of 15 students attended. outside and to the right of the outside black metal entry door and the inner varnished wood stairwell door. To unlock a door, pass your card closely in front of the sensor I just rub my wallet, with the card still inside, across the face of the sensor. If you have been granted access, the red light will turn green and the lock will release. Sometimes the outside metal door can be sticky, but if the light has turned green, you should be able to pull the door open. Fall Break Camp! Fall Break Camp was a breezy one! Sailors spent most of their time in reefed Toppers during the October 10th-14th camp. A total of 16 sailors attended Fall Break Camp. Island School Middle School Retreat KSA was lucky to spend two days with the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders of Island School during their school retreat. During the two days (October 3rd and 4th) leadership skills, teamwork, basic knots, water safety, and of course sailing, were focused on. Coach Boat Needed To continue our program KSA is looking for a coach boat that can safely take sailors out of the harbour on Dinghies. Shale Shore Kaua`i Sailing Association Executive Director How our Electronic Door Locks Work With our new club membership cards that were issued earlier this year, NYC has changed how access to the Clubhouse is controlled and granted. The new cards have an electronic signature that is read by the sensors just All members in good standing have access to the outside black metal entry door, giving the club card holder access to the restrooms. Access through the varnished wood stairwell door is only granted to those members in good standing that have completed the Clubhouse orientation, normally with the club Port Captain, Bill Peterson. In certain circumstances, emergency access codes the old numeric codes that were entered manually have been given to members where their cards have failed to work or have not yet been updated. These codes are meant to be temporary only and will be changed or deleted on a quarterly basis. If you have a problem with your card, please contact NYC Port Captain Bill Peterson at This coming 2017 racing season, Clubhouse orientations will regularly be scheduled prior to the Thursday races or by special arrangement with the Port Captain. 11 2017 NYC Sailing Calendars are now Available! This is the first year that NYC has produced a sailing calendar! It will be a fundraiser for our club to further improve the facility for all to enjoy! I put together this calendar from all of my favorite photos throughout this year s racing season, and I am happy to say that it has turned out to be an awesome display of NYC s very active race activities for all to see every day next year! There are two sizes of calendars to choose from: 14 X 11 - $25 each (pictured on the poster) or 11 X $15 each Both calendars have the same photos, and have the 2017 racing schedule printed with a color code for each series. Also listed are the important club events! A great source of NYC information for all! They would make great Holiday gifts as well! If you would like to order calendars, you can do so at the Da Store at nawiliwiliyachtclub.org. You can pay by PayPal with a pick up option to eliminate shipping costs; or you can contact me directly and I will be happy to take your order. I do plan to have a few on hand to sell at the ship store at the Clubhouse, but if we don t have enough to fill your order it only takes five or six days for an order to arrive. 15 Friday Aug 5, KYC was coming to life in the dark as 13 boats were getting ready to sail toward Kaua`i. We set up the sails but did not hoist as there is no way of tacking out of the narrow channel, especially with so many boats heading out at the same time. Dick s plan was to motor to the starting mark past Chinaman s Hat Island. We headed out the Sampan Channel again as this would save us 30 mins off the morning. I was worried the whole time that we would run aground again, but there was something else I should have worried about more - the motor. It quit, again, of course at the most inconvenient time; we were heading out the channel almost to the last channel marker. We ended up loosing all boat speed and started to rock heavily in sharp 5 foot waves, and soon the boat positioned itself sideways to the oncoming waves. At the same time we were drifting toward the shallow outside-of-the-channel area. David was working frantically on the motor trying to revive it while we hoisted the main sail. That corrected the problem just in a nick of time, we gained boat speed, got steadied in the seas, and headed for deeper water. The outboard was hauled into the boat and stowed (yes, between the toilet and gear box). It had done its job for this trip, even if needing a lot of TLC. I felt bad for James, as he had lent it from the goodness of his heart but it ended up having some peculiar problems. Dick and James had checked it before the trip and it had run fine. I am thankful for the smarts of the boys with it and for the tenacity of David for sticking with it. He worked miracles on that outboard! At the start line, it was a magical sight to see 13 beautiful boats tacking and jibing with the gorgeous O`ahu mountain range fronted by a most brilliant rainbow (where is James now that I need the name for those mountains?). The start was exciting as everybody had pretty much figured out the same spot to be the best one. Some anxious yelling can always be heard as boats get dangerously close to each other and this time was no exception. Also as the start was postponed, there was a lot of back and forth activity for a while. I would have thoroughly enjoyed it but got annoyed by Tim s barking which everybody on the boat knows, I m just not fond of. Also the lack of sleep did not help and my temper was a bit short, so I kept mostly quiet. And then suddenly we were off on our way to Kaua`i. Dick s timing and positioning skills at the starting line were amazing and we got a great start - yet again. All was going beautifully. Winds were high teens to low twenties. Tim was trying to teach David and me about jib trim, but I cannot claim to have mastered it in one session. David was grinding and I was tailing/ trimming. Then the Chute went up and so did my anxiety. I have developed a healthy respect for the Spinnaker as I ve experienced some rounding-ups and have felt the power of the wind, and my own weakness compared to it. Sean is our foredeck guy and he does a totally amazing job figuring out all the 7

16 lines and the pole and the sails. He has caught on very quickly to all of this sailing stuff, it just blows my mind. He is like a natural. And he is always calm and smiling. After the spinnaker was raised, our Trim-Dream-Team went to work with David grinding and Steve trimming. They work so very seamlessly together, it is beautiful to watch. Steve was brought to Speedy by Sean, he is a lightheartedlightfooted guy with encouraging words for everybody, laughing easily and putting in more than his share of the work on the boat. He was also an amazing organizer of the boat at KYC. We sailed in last night like we felt - ragged, messy, and tired, and the boat was in the same shape. Steve seemed to move effortlessly in the boat and suddenly everything was in it s place while Sean hung up all the wet stuff to dry. These boys rock! David and I were the messmakers and that is all I m going to say about that, hehe. As we got out into the Channel, the waves got a bit more challenging. The biggest swell action was from NE hitting us in the quarter aft but to confuse matters, there was also a swell from the S and backwash from O`ahu. As the winds were in the high teens with gusts up to 25 knots, it was at times borderline too hard to fly the Chute. Tim and Dick took turns steering and then Tim planted a seed as he put it; I should take the tiller and learn about downwind sailing. Then we rounded up a bit and that inspired Tim to tell stories of rounding down, dismasting, rounding up, ending up in the water, and then we die. OMG, I felt that seed wilting away! I also learned that driving a boat downwind is very tricky, requires a lot of constant concentration and there is a very narrow window within which it is safe to sail. No sirree, there was no way I was going to be responsible for this boat and the crew in these conditions out in the middle of the Channel! Sean however did dare and was able to give a break to Dick and Tim at the tiller. He did a great job, of course. We had secured the jib on the foredeck with the bungees when the chute went up, but surprise, surprise, the wind kept on at it, and the jib crept up the forestay little by little. Suddenly there was a ripping sound and we saw that the foil was braking as it was being ripped apart from the forestay. The jib went down the hatch and now we really had no choice but to fly the Chute if we wanted to reach Kaua`i before tomorrow. I was getting sleepy and decided to go below deck for a little nap. If we were going to die, it would not make a difference whether I was below or above the deck. As I came out a while later, I was surprised to see that Dick had fixed the foil and the jib was an option again. I am totally blown away at the skills he possesses! And he just shrugs his shoulders and says matter-of-factly with a chuckle, When you are on a boat, you ve just gotta fix or jury-rig it with what you ve got. David and Steve kept grinding and trimming. Sean watched over the foredeck (sometimes in a laying down position that could be mistaken for sunbathing except for the full set of clothing he was wearing). James shifted his weight from side to center as needed. Tim drove the boat really hard (a blue 8

17 and white spinnaker ahead kept on getting bigger). Dick took turns with him at the tiller and I was providing sunscreen, drinks and sandwiches. I tried to do some trimming for a while but did not do it even close as expertly as the boys. The sun was shining, the shimmering waves had calmed down a bit and everything was absolutely beautiful. We were taking turns on sitting on the two cushions we had on the boat as the deck wasn t getting any softer with time. For a while I had felt so anxious because of all the stories of what could go wrong, that I seriously considered what was wrong with me wanting to do something like this. Should I stick to hiking with firm ground under my feet? Or am I a cruiser, or more accurately, a coastal cruiser? This racing stuff is scary. You push the boat to its limits, where there is far more chance of something breaking. Being cooped up in a small tub in the middle of nowhere with strangers, with no way of escape (even to the bathroom); was this really what I wanted to do? Looking around I saw the crew and realized; they were no longer strangers and each one was putting in more than his share to keep us all safe. We all possessed a set of multiple skills that we were more than willing to use at any time, even for extended periods, for the good of all. None of us were wimps and all of us enjoyed being on the boat. We had figured out how to accept each other and there was a sense of camaraderie from this shared experience. The thought of racing and understanding how to maximize the benefit of the wind does now also send a few excited shivers down my spine... As a calm settled over me as I realized, that there was no other place I d rather be, than with these boys on this boat right now. And as I looked around, I realized that we had become a Team! Dick, you ve got yourself one now:) Getting closer to Kaua`i we needed to drop the Spinnaker as the wind was overpowering Tim at the tiller. For a while the trip seemed to take forever, but suddenly we were at the lighthouse entering Nawiliwili harbor. Sean was willing to hoist the Spinnaker once more but the winds were not the best for it and the rest of us were so done. Getting back into dock was so familiar from our Thursday nights races, it was like coming home. Liz and Tawnya with Dick s grandkids were there to welcome us warmly with MaiTais and the Yacht Club had a wonderful post-race dinner. What a home- coming that was! This was the funnest trip ever.
