Perhaps fair weather is not appropriate when you read Vice Commodore Kevin Arndt s report on our 1st Offshore Race Skippers Choice entitled Breezy Start to 2017 Offshore Race Series. Three of our best competitors left the safety of Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbour in 25 knot winds to kick-off our 2017 Offshore Race Series. This is where true adventure on Hawaiian Open Ocean begins! Bonjolea II, Fast Company, and Trinity battled the elements around G11- Ahukini Breakwater for an exciting finish. Who won, you say? See the results on page 3 or on our Our 2017 Race Season is now in full-swing with the Glenn Hontz Memorial Series concluding on March 23rd. We now head into the ever-popular Rum Race Series, where we honor our beloved waterman Louie Abrams of Papa A`u. Then, the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup Challenge goes live on April at the Waikiki Yacht Club. Fast Company won the honors this year to represent NYC. God Speed Fast Company! So, what else is on the horizon? I encourage you to visit and click on Calendar to see what s happening! Our NYC Secretary Charlotte Ross (along with help from hubby John) created a powerful tool for club event planning. This also helps us coordinate with all State of Hawai`i yacht clubs participating under Hawai`i Yacht Racing Association (HYRA). You ll be amazed at the many activities taking place at our club this year. NYC Membership Benefit Hawai`i Life Flight! The deadline for application to receive this awesome discount is Monday, April 3rd. We send a big shout-out to Shaun Lehman and Janice Portillo for coordinating this special rate for NYC members. Again, all details about the program are NYC One-Year Hold-Over Lease We received our formal hold-over lease documentation from DLNR authorizing an additional year beyond the original 15-year

3 lease that expired on September 1, The good news is that we maintain our current rent rate through this hold-over period. As I noted last month, there s much to do in order to retain our lease beyond September 1, We have two options ahead of us this year: 1) Participate in a public auction, or 2) submit forms to DLNR as a 501(c)(3) requesting offline negotiations with DLNR as provided under HRS Lease to eleemosynary organizations. Please let us know if any of you are well-schooled in this area of expertise. We can really use your help at this time! Mahalo, Commodore Fred Styer Racing News Breezy Start to Offshore Race Series z If you look towards the mole while you re racing you will now see the Race Officials wearing orange vests. This gives the spectators an opportunity to talk to our Finish Officers about the racing and other yacht club activities. In addition to that there is a large banner facing the parking lot to let everyone know that an NYC event is going on, and there has been a lot more interaction with visitors and residents alike. I d like to thank Rhan Honjo, Peggy Candrian, Stan Greenbaum, Del Fox, and Marylyn Jensen for their commitment to setting up the equipment and managing the race. If it wasn t for their hard work, we would all be sailing in circles. z The catering options for the Dinner Host Boats has made it much easier to provide a delicious dinner after the race. I ve gotten a lot of positive feedback on the catering options and how it has removed some of the burden on the boat s crew responsible for dinner on race day. I d like to give kudos to the crew of Lelele, skipper John Snyder and crew Waly Marney, and Terry & Carol Wells, for hosting the St. Patrick s Day Dinner even though they have not sailed a single race! Mahalo you! z The first Offshore Race Series, Skippers Choice, was on March 4 and it was definitely BREEZE ON! The knot wind was out of the southwest and three boats attended Bonjolea II, Trinity, and Fast Company. The skippers elected for a G11- Ahukini Breakwater G11 race course (approx. 8.7 nm). After the short windward leg Bonjolea II, skippered by Bonnie Tiffany, put her spinnaker up and flew up to Ahukini in no time. Fast Company had a few knock downs, and Trinity flew a couple of her hulls! The return leg was a beat into the wind but in the lee of the island, Bonjolea II had a sizeable lead on the other boats. The excitement of this race is what sailing is all about, and I hope to see more boats participate in the Offshore Race Series. Skippers Choice Offshore Race Series Results v PHRF Open and PHRF Monohull 1st: Bonjolea II 2nd: Fast Company 3rd: Trinity v CLUB Open 1st: Trinity 2nd: Bonjolea II 3rd: Fast Company z The Glen Hontz Memorial Race Series had six very exciting races. There was a large turnout for each race with up to eleven boats making for a tight grouping on the start line. Also, some finishes were noseto-nose with multiple boats crossing the line within seconds of each other. In the end it was three Olson 30 s that took PHRF honors with Fast Company skippered by Jim Saylor taking three first place bullets earning the first place trophy. Club Class had Weatherly (another Olson 30) take first place trophy. A tie for Club Class second place trophy between Trinity and Papa A u was decided by using rule A8.1.

4 Glen Hontz Memorial Race Series v PHRF Open and PHRF Monohull 1st: Fast Company 2nd: OZone 3rd: Kato v CLUB Open 1st: Weatherly 2nd: Trinity 3rd: Papa A u z 2017 Lipton Challenge Cup One: Jim Saylor skippering his Fast Company has won the honor of challenging the Waikiki Yacht Club for the Lipton Challenge Cup One. The series will be held in the waters off of South O`ahu on April 22nd and 23rd. Kaneohe Yacht Club, Hawai`i Yacht Club, and Maui Boat & Yacht Club will also participate in the challenge. The defending boat High Tension has been a defending Lipton Cup One champion multiple times in recent history, so we can expect an exciting regatta. Fast Company ranked highest in a NYC performance based criteria using the results from NYC races starting from the 2016 Rum Race Series to the Glen Honzt Memorial Race Series. z The Louie Abrams Memorial Race Series will start on April 6th. This six race series is in honor of Louis Abrams who was the NYC Commodore in 86 and 90, and NYC Treasurer in 82, 83, and 89. His experience as a yachtsman was vast starting out with sailing with his grandfather who started the TransPac Yacht Race in He graduated from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy, and went on to become a local realtor serving as President of the Kaua`i Board of Realtors. He was very active in racing around the state of Hawai`i and was always a keen competitor. Entry into this series requires that the boat stock the NYC bar with a bottle of rum or Tequila (in memory of Louie s favorite libation) labelled with the boat s name and some fancy artwork. Mahalo, Rear Commodore Kevin Arndt March Game Night The NYC Beer Tasting on March 18th was quite successful. A number of the usual suspects attended, accompanied with various bottles and in at least one case, cans of beer, the identity of said beers hidden in their individual cloaks of brown paper with only their percentage of alcohol content disclosed. The tasting commenced. Events beyond this point become somewhat hazy, but it is generally agreed that the winning entry was a chocolate infused brew from one of the local specialty markets. Unfortunately, no one can recall the winner s name. Other vague memories include the usual games that followed, including an extremely educational hand or three of Texas Hold em Poker. No real money was exchanged, so no lasting economic damage was sustained although the occasional ego might have been bruised in the process. Bill Peterson

6 TIPS How to Navigate the NYC Website Always click on the flyers that cycle through on the Save the Date post on the front page of the website. It will automatically take you to all the event details, the option to purchase event tickets if applicable, and contact numbers if any additional information is needed. Always click on the Upcoming Events calendar entries on the front page of the website. This will automatically take you to all the details of that event. Members that would like to enquire about Clubhouse availability for a private usage reservation can click the Calendar drop down tab at the top of the front page of the website. Our current NYC calendar will pop up, and then you can click the arrow to change the month until you can view the one you have interest in to see what dates are available. This will hopefully help in your initial planning. If you see a date available that you would like to make a reservation for, our Port Captain Bill Peterson will be happy to help you with that procedure! Just send him an at nycportcaptain@gmail.com. Please note that we can place your reservation as tentative until you have made a definite decision and completed the forms and deposit needed. 8 First CPR/AED Class at NYC a Big Success! On Saturday March 11, 2017 eight NYC members attended a CPR/AED class upstairs at the Yacht Club. These participants were trained in CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) as well as the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) by EFR Instructors Janice Portillo and Shaun Lehman, and were able to learn and practice skills on adult and infant mannequins as well as a working AED simulator. All eight students completed the skills and passed the written test with flying colors and are now certified CPR/AED first responders! They are: Colby Curtis, Nick Beck, Dick Olsen, Liz Olsen, Paula Saylor, Jim Saylor, Cheryl Nickles, and Kevin Arndt. Congratulations and well done! This coincides with NYC acquiring an AED which will be available to the club and Nawiliwili Harbour community. More classes will be offered in the future, with the same discounted rate of $60 for NYC members. If you are interested contact Janice or Shaun gmail.com or gmail.com. 10 Kaua`i Sailing Association Physics of Sailing This March we held a Physics of Sailing Class in conjunction with Steve Taylors Physics class at KCC. Fifteen students were able to attend over a three day period. The class coupled classroom and on the water learning. Japan Maritime College hunt! If you would like to come and watch you are welcome to do just that! 10 am boat rigging. Launch after boats are rigged. Shale Shore Kaua`i Sailing Association Executive Director Overlapped The illustration below was taken from the US Sailing website and reposted here with their permission. This shows a simplified definition of overlapped which came up in a conversation at the club after a recent race. The literal definitions can be confusing at times without a picture showing the particulars. More definitions and clear illustrations can be found in the Sailor s Guide to the Racing Rules available from US Sailing. The Japanese students were eager to learn marine communications using VHF radios, build a mock boat, and go for a sail! Thank you to all of our helpers for an excellent job teaching the students about sailing: Risa, Evan, Elly, Lily, Brianna, Carl, and Charlotte for taking amazing photos. Spring Break Camp! Camp was excellent this year. March 20-24th we had ten kids on the water having a blast. On the third day of camp, we even made it out of the inside basin! In both pictures Yellow is overlapped with both Blue and Green. In the picture on the left because Yellow is between Blue and Green and overlapped with each this means that Blue and Green are also overlapped. In the picture on the right Blue and Green are not overlapped because Yellow is not between them. Caleb sails backwards, while Maddy is all smiles in her sun hat on the bow!
