Stanford Sailing

Stanford Sailing History Stanford sailing will travel to over 30 regattas this year, from San Diego to Seattle, from Austin to Rhode Island. The team practices at least twice a week in the San Francisco Bay and the athletes receive the tutelage of two full-time coaches with international experience. The program has the power to recruit touted junior sailors from across the country who have already competed against the world s best competition and who come to join a program that has the backing of one of the biggest and most successful athletic departments in the country. But Stanford s sailing team could not have achieved its current success without building on the back of a program whose roots nearly date back to the founding of the university in In the early 1900s Stanford sailors competed as individuals and sometimes formed crews to enter regattas, but intercollegiate regattas were in their infancy and had yet to reach Stanford. In 1906 Eugene Overton sailed his sloop Katrina in the first Honolulu race and in 1912 Stanford student Howard Wright Sr. skippered a 42 foot sloop Siwash that broke the record for circumventing Catalina Island by sailing it in 12 hours and 14 minutes. Beginning in the 1930s, intercollegiate racing began to take hold. Stanford s first regatta was in 1938, when a Cardinal (then called the Indians) squad led by Donald Douglas Jr. beat Cal. The race led to the official founding of the Stanford Sailing Club in 1939, and Stanford along with Cal, San Jose State and Menlo formed the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association. During this era Stanford sailing practiced at Lake Lagunita, a small lake on the Stanford campus barely big enough for a 600-yard course. The program quickly grew, attracting top sailors and soon Stanford docked its boats in the San Francisco Bay. In the 1960s Stanford asserted itself onto the national scene as one of the top sailing programs in the country. Bill Twist Jr. won the men s singlehanded national championship in 1963, and Stanford captured another trophy in the 1967 singlehanded nationals. All-Americans began coming out of Stanford at an almost-yearly clip, beginning with Kim L. Desenberg and Robert M. Skip Allan in To date Stanford has produced 34 All-Americans along with 19 Honorable Mention selections. Only a handful of schools across the county can boast more. Emery Wager s victory in last year s men s singlehanded nationals was Stanford s fifth national championship. Since 1987 the sailing team has put eight teams in the top five and 27 teams in the top 10. Stanford s current success at the top levels of sailing is a product of over a century of tradition.

Jay Kehoe Head Coach Jay Kehoe enters his seventh season as head coach of the Stanford sailing team having solidified his and Stanford s place among the elite of the sailing world. Kehoe has produced 10 All-Americans while at Stanford, and guided the Cardinal to a singlehanded championship last year. Since arriving at Stanford, Kehoe s sailing teams have qualified in at least four of the six Intercollegiate National Championships every year. Kehoe s sailing career began in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, a coastal town where Kehoe grew up. He began sailing Prams, Blue Jays and Lasers at the age of eight, and raced Optimists soon after. Kehoe sailed all through Youth Championships, placing as high as third. Kehoe entered the Coast Guard Academy, where he was transferred to the head sailing coach at the school. After leaving the school, Kehoe ran St. Petersburg s junior sailing program for four years, from 1989 to His coaching experience led him to found and lead the coaching company Race Coaching Staff One in 1994, where he led coaching clinics around the nation for two years. In 1997 Kehoe left Race One to begin coaching college sailing at Yale, where in four years he built their club program into an Ivy League champion. He has won two world championships in the 505 class as a coach, and three national championships outside school. As a sailor he placed fourth in the 1988 Olympic trials, and has coached more than six of USODA s national teams and served on the coaching staff of the U.S. Optimist national team. He has coached High, U.S. Youth and Youth World Champions along with Olympic campaigners. Kehoe also co-wrote The Winner s Guide to Optimist Sailing, a comprehensive guide for kids learning to sail and race Optis, according to Sailing World. Kehoe s knowledge and exuberance for sailing has enabled him to consistently recruit top athletes to The Farm. This year experienced junior sailors Cole Hatton, Hannah Burroughs and Graham Todd headline the freshman class. Kehoe currently resides in Santa Clara with his wife, Amy, and daughter, Merrick. 2

Erik Storck Assistant Coach Storck, a 2007 graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, was a four-time All-American and two-time finalist for College Sailor of the Year (2005, 2007), in his time competing for the Big Green. An Economics major, Storck brings two years of leadership experience on the nationally ranked Dartmouth team as Vice Commodore ( ) and Commodore ( ). Most importantly, Storck brings a wealth of college sailing-specific knowledge, having skippered A-Division to top-5 finishes in four Coed Dinghy National Championships and three Team Racing National Championships for Dartmouth. Erik brings a lot to the table, commented Head Coach Jay Kehoe. He has led his snowbound Dartmouth team to the National Championships every year he sailed for the Big Green, which is no small feat considering they get on the water barely two weeks prior to the qualifiers. I know this kind of drive and determination will pay off for our program. Coaching Staff I am very excited to join the Cardinal, said Storck. The facilities and student-athletes here certainly live up to the first-class reputation I have come to know in competing against this team. I am most excited about the resources and support given the sailing team by the University and the department. I am grateful for being afforded this opportunity and I look forward to working with this highly competitive and driven team. A native of Huntington, NY, Storck has most recently coached the Long Island Sound Optimist Team to a number of great successes, including the National Team Racing Championship in the Optimist Dinghy for 2007 this past July.

Stanford Outlook After the most successful season in Cardinal sailing history, Stanford finds itself among the top six teams in the nation in both women s and coed divisions in the preseason polls. Led by seventh year head coach Jay Kehoe, the Cardinal enters the season as favorites to repeat as district and conference champions and contenders for national honors. A year ago, Stanford placed fourth in the Fowle Trophy award, won a national championship in singlehanded sailing, had five sailors named All- American and recorded top finishes at four of six Intercollegiate National Championships. We are one of the strongest teams in the conference, said Kehoe. While we lost some of our top sailors from last year s team, we have an outstanding freshman class. They will be asked to take on major roles for us this season. Despite the loss of Brian Haines and Emery Wager, Kehoe will count on senior skippers Edward Conrad and All-American Evan Brown to lead the team. Freshman Cole Hatton, Hannah Burroughs and Graham Todd are all experienced junior sailors who will be asked to play prominent roles for the Cardinal this season. We lost a lot of talented seniors last year, says Kehoe, but I m excited about our freshman class and what they bring to our program. Hatton led his high school team to a national championship. He has the pedigree. We re going to ask him to step into a big role right away. As for the crew, All-American junior Kelly McKenna, and seniors Carrie Denning and Sarah Schoknecht will lead the way. We are an experienced team with a little youth mixed in, says Kehoe. Kehoe is looking to not only defend their conference championship in 2008, but put Stanford sailing among the elite programs in the nation. Consistency in team racing is an area of emphasis for the Cardinal in Under Kehoe, Stanford has continued to assert itself as one of the nation s top sailing programs. The Cardinal has won three national championship trophies and placed in at least four of the six Intercollegiate National Championship divisions for the last six seasons. The Cardinal s version includes returning All-Americans, an experienced crew and a talented crop of newcomers which adds up to Stanford challenging for top honors at the national championships.

After the optimist, which gave him his first taste of international competition at the age of 13, Eddie graduated into Laser Radials and Club 420s, but began spending more of his time sharing his passion of the sport as a coach of several junior programs. He loves all water sports, but especially sailing, both for the friendships and variety of competitions Bios Carrie Denning Hometown: Greenwich, CT High : Greenwich Academy Major: History and Art History Denning began sailing at the Belle Haven Club at the age of nine because I was immensely jealous of my older brother who had started the earlier year. Denning sailed optimists and competed at Opti Nationals, New England s, and one trip to Bermuda for North Americans, where she met future coach Jay Kehoe. In High at Greenwich Academy she was captain of her varsity team and won the Captain s Harbor Trophy for MVP. In Denning competed with Evan Brown as the women s Varsity A boat, and this year sails with Eddie Conrad on the Varsity Co-ed A boat. Evan Brown Hometown: Tampa, FL High : Berkeley Preparatory Major: Human Biology Evan was born into a family of avid sailors and spent much of her early years cruising around Florida and the Bahamas, and became a competitive sailor at the age of 8. She raced optis for several years, progressing to national and international competitions in which she represented the United States. She became an avid match racer at age 15 and was ranked as high as 37th in the world in the ISAF Women s Rankings. Most recently, she was a member of the United States Sailing Team and represented the USA in the pre-olympics in Beijing. At Stanford, she has had the privilege to sail with some amazing crews including alum Joanna Madsen, current senior Carrie Denning and All-American Kelly McKenna. Brown was named to the All-American team and the All-PCC team. She is a captain on the 2007/08 squad and A-division women s skipper, and I can t wait for an amazing season! Page first sailed optimists, but eventually graduated to the 420. In high school Page was a successful sailor for St. Ann s school in New York. Page has been a key member of Stanford sailing since his freshman year, and Sailing World s preseason prognostications list his return as big reason to expect success from the Cardinal coed squad. According to Page, sailing is most fun in big breeze and big waves. Page will be a skipper on the coed team for his senior year. Beth Hoover Hometown: Corvallis, OR High : Corvallis High Major: Sociology Beth Hoover began sailing keelboats recreationally in high school, but didn t sail a dinghy until she joined Stanford. 14 Season In Review The season was the Cardinal s most successful campaign in the history of the program. The Cardinal won its district and conference in dominating fashion while Cardinal sailors achieved top finishes in four of the six Intercollegiate National Championships, including a first place finish in Men s Singlehandeds. Five sailors earned All-American honors and Stanford placed a program-best fourth in the Fowle Trophy, which recognizes the nation s best overall sailing program. In addition to the top finish in Men s Singlehandeds in the Inter-Collegiate National Championships, Women s Singlehandeds earned a fifth place finish, while the Cardinal placed third in Women s Dinghies and 12th in Coed Dinghies. The Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association recognized five Stanford sailors for the All-American team. Junior Evan Brown became only the fifth Cardinal sailor to be named a two-time All- American. Joining her on the first team was sophomore Kelly McKenna, while senior captain Brian Haines, sophomore Taylor Grimes and senior Emery Wager were named honorable mention. The five Cardinal selections on the All-American list tied the 1996 squad for the most in Stanford sailing history. In addition, Haines was a finalist for the Robert H. Hobbs award given annually to the sportsman of the year. Stanford dominated the fall season in the Pacific Coast Conference, winning every event it entered on the west coast. The Cardinal capped the fall season with a win at the PCC s Fall Championships in Santa Barbara. The spring season did little to loosen Stanford s hold on the PCC. The Cardinal qualified for two of the three national championship regattas by winning the conference qualifying races. The PCCSC recognized Stanford s season by selecting eight Cardinal sailors to the all-star team including Haines, Wager, Brown, McKenna and Grimes along with senior Caroline Young, freshman Leigh Hammel and senior Joanna Madsen. The loaded Cardinal squad won their district and conference championships and qualified for the national championship regattas with wins at Treasure Island and Hawaii. Coed Dinghy s earned their nationals bid with a blowout win at the Pacific Coast Championships in Hawaii. Stanford, led by A division sailors Haines and McKenna, outpaced the competition with a 40 point victory over second place UC Irvine and earned a spot at the tournament hosted by the Naval Academy. The Stanford women also won decisively in their national qualifier, held at Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay. Both Cardinal A and B teams posted low scores in the regatta. B division sophomore skipper Taylor Grimes and senior Katherine Schlosser won 10 of their 14 races over the weekend, giving Stanford the easy victory and earning a bid to nationals in Norfolk, Virginia. Senior Emery Wager became the third Cardinal sailor in 60 years to win the Men s Singlehanded Championships when he bested 16 of the nation s top sailors in Bristol, Rhode Island for a championship. After the first day of sailing Wager found himself in 7th but managed the comeback with consistently high finishes in shifty wind conditions throughout the second day. On the women s side junior Evan Brown battled the tough conditions to place fifth at the elite event. In addition to its championship season, Cardinal sailing excellence extended to the classroom. Senior Rebecca Levine, an All-American in 2006, was one of 10 sailors across the country to be named first team All-Academic by the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association. 12
