4 04 the yachting industry needs you International qualifications The UK is the world leader in construction, manning and safety standards afloat, with the MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) internationally recognised as providing the benchmark specifications for the industry. As a result, RYA and MCA qualifications are seen as the international qualifications of choice. Insurance companies are driving owners and the industry to adopt British training standards on a global scale. UKSA Cowes All that your sailing could ask for Industry Overview With sustained growth over a number of years at all levels, the yachting industry offers a wealth of opportunity for those interested in a career afloat. Driving the need for better qualified crew Legal requirements for MCA manning levels are forcing owners to ensure their crew are suitably qualified. Increasingly, yacht yards all over the world are now building to British MCA coding requirements. Owners perceive British qualifications as the kite mark of choice, elevating the status of RYA and MCA qualifications. Secure your future with UKSA MCA and RYA qualifications form the basis of the training UKSA provides. With their range of skills and internationally approved marine qualifications, Academy graduates often gain promotion more rapidly and build greater earning potential early on in their career. The superyacht sector is growing at a sustained and astonishing rate, with build contracts of vessels continuing to grow. There are already 30,000 superyachts worldwide, requiring an estimated 150,000+ crew. Growth is also strong in smaller craft an estimated 200,000 new craft under 24m, with an estimated value of 7 billion Euros being built each year. The increasing sophistication of technology afloat has provided more luxury on yachts, with features that were only seen on the largest superyachts a few years ago becoming commonplace onboard smaller vessels, making the sport more appealing to a much broader audience. As more people discover the delights of charter and flotilla holidays, or buy their own yacht, more job opportunities are created for expert professionals with a passion for providing a safe, exhilarating experience. UKSA training is designed to enhance exactly these qualities in our graduates. UKSA also ensures graduates leave with the skills required for the upkeep, maintenance and management of today s yachting technology. Who trains at UKSA? The Academy provides career training for people of all ages from 16 70, attracting a diverse range of backgrounds and previous experience. All are linked by a common passion for the ocean. // Professionals seeking a new career // Young people starting out // Those selling up and sailing away // Career breaks // Retirement dreams Whatever your existing experience Some people come to us with little experience, others have many thousands of miles and many years experience. Whatever your current ability, our course advisers will provide you with sound training and careers advice tailored to your circumstances.

5 05 in search of something else... drive your career forward UKSA s yachting programmes are a great way to revitalise your love of life and get back in touch with what makes you tick. A large number of our students come from other industries, are in their late twenties to mid forties and are choosing to retrain in yachting with a view to finding employment that they enjoy doing. Equally, young people seeking a rewarding career path in which they can quickly move to responsible and senior positions are increasingly looking to the excellent opportunities available in the maritime industry. A growing number of students train for non-career purposes because their future plans require a high level of proficiency and confidence in yachting. Some have taken early retirement and are planning to realise a lifetime s ambition by sailing off into the sunset, while others choose a year out in the yachting industry as a sabbatical. For all these people, UKSA provides comprehensive training, building knowledge and self-sufficiency afloat, to make their dreams a reality. Quick Guide to UKSA Training Which programme is for me? UKSA s Unique Environment Behind the glamorous, efficient and relaxed atmosphere on any professional yacht, there s a team with focus, skill and knowledge of all aspects of seamanship, navigation and yacht maintenance. UKSA training provides that skill and knowledge. Seamanship training afloat UKSA s fleet is carefully chosen to provide experience on a wide range of yacht types with different handling characteristics. This ensures that when you are out in the industry, you can step from one boat to another with confidence. The core of the fleet is based around our 34-45ft yachts, which are ideally suited to perfecting handling under power and sail. Onboard you can master the techniques required to conduct your command passages, taking part in self-skippering exercises and passing your RYA/MCA Yachtmaster practical exam. Our extensive fleet of matched keelboats provide an invaluable tool in developing your sailing skills and helping to make the transition to yacht command. These boats are ideal for quickly developing handling skills under sail, in particular man overboard, coming alongside and picking up moorings. the uksa advantage // A diverse range of yachts including two 67ft Challenge yachts, a Broadblue multihull, top-quality Sweden yachts and smaller keelboats // 6.8m RIBs // Yacht technology department with over 725k of hardware // Dedicated marine engineering training workshop // Transas engine room simulator // High-tech equipment including a 200k Transas navigation and radar simulation suite // Unrivalled onsite facilities // The esprit de corps that develops when you eat, live and breathe boats 24 hours a day with like-minded individuals

9 Photo: SallyCollison.com navigation afloat transas simulator 09 Navigation Our philosophy is the complete integration of all navigation techniques in a seamless and professional manner. A full understanding of both electronic navigation and traditional techniques are therefore crucially important. A mix of shore-based instruction, simulation and practical teaching afloat ensures continuity between classroom theory and real-world navigation practice. Transas simulator The Academy s 200,000 Transas suite provides a valuable learning environment in which to sharpen your navigational ability. You can practice your command skills, navigate in all weathers and learn to understand radar systems. The facility has five workstations (including radar, ship controls and electronic charts) and can simulate a variety of different ships, interacting with over 30 target vessels within different cruising areas around the world including UK waters to simulate a vast range of navigational situations. Once you have mastered the basics (including navigation, boat handling, search and rescue, and bridge management), we can introduce a range of onboard system failures for you to correct and compensate for. It is great to be able to put your navigation theory and command skills into practice in a controlled environment where all your decisions can be played back and analysed with positive learning outcomes. During your training, your instructors will unwrap the mystery surrounding essential plant and machinery our yacht technology training equips you with all the functioning principles behind equipment onboard, with the maintenance sections of our yachting programmes focusing on the general ship s knowledge that you will require to run a vessel effectively. Our programmes provide you with the methodology, hands-on approach and the elementary understanding of all the major yacht systems. We are able to provide access to these items, enabling you to dismantle and re-assemble them, so you can confidently deal with similar situations when you encounter them afloat. We will also show you how to establish and manage an onboard ship s maintenance routine. Expert staff As a Maritime Academy, UKSA is able to attract and employ specialist instructors in all areas of training, ensuring the tuition you receive provides you with the greatest possible depth of understanding. Challenge Yachts With their exceptional pedigree as 67ft Global Challenge yachts, UKSA Albatross and UKSA Whirlwind bring a great deal more than their size and 42 ton displacement to the party. As well as providing the platform on which we teach many of the essential command skills, they are a working example of larger yacht systems, maintenance, management and onboard ship routines. Helming boats of this size is an art in itself, so expert help and advice is always on hand. Loads on the sheets of yachts this size may exceed 6 tons, which places a great emphasis on doing things in the right order. Close quarter handling, watch-keeping systems, sail handling, loading winches, anchoring and man overboard recovery are all manoeuvres in which Albatross and Whirlwind clearly demonstrate the challenges of large yacht management. expert staff global challenge yachts
