Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AA381473) Analogue MHz beacons will no longer be detected by satellite from 1 February The internationally owned satellites will be switched off and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority that coordinates all aviation and maritime search and rescue across Australia's 53 million square kilometre

5 search and rescue region, will no longer have the ability to detect an analogue distress beacon via satellite. Australia has no capacity to delay the switch off date of the satellites, however, AMSA and State/NT agencies have been informing the public of this date since the announcement was made in To ensure your life and the lives of your family are safe during recreational activities on land, sea or in the air, it is essential to switch to a 406 MHz distress beacon immediately. While the 1 February 2009 cessation date has been widely known for some considerable time, the last minute rush by consumers to purchase a 406 MHz beacon has resulted in some shortage of supplies. If you are having difficulty purchasing a distress beacon, you should ensure your name is placed on a waiting list. Digital technology provides AMSA with a faster notification and more accurate location, enabling a quicker response to your distress situation. These include EPIRB (Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacons) for use on water, PLB (Personal Locator Beacons) for land use, and ELT (Emergency Locator Transmitters) in aircraft. If you continue to rely upon a MHz analogue beacon in a distress situation rescue authorities may never hear you. 406 MHz beacons must be registered with AMSA. Registration is free and can be done on line at the AMSA web site. When upgrading to a 406 MHz distress beacon it is essential that old analogue models are appropriately disabled and disposed of responsibly so that they do not trigger false alarms. Battery World shops provide free disposal. More advice about distress beacons is available from the AMSA web site: or by calling Do not risk going without a 406. The annual battle sees Flag Officers of each club competing in tiny Sabot s in the chilly water of Port Phillip Bay. The Cup comprising a bottle of muddy Yarra River water has been fought over since The race, originally started as a mid winter dare on the Yarra River, has been sailed on Albert Park Lake as well as the respective St Kilda and Brighton habours. This year, fluky winds saw a great display of technical and tactical competency from the erstwhile keel boat sailors. Luckily the spectator fleet was close enough to remind Brighton Club Captain Don Richmond of the correct course, resulting in a close line honours win over RMYS Tony Warren. The hosts four boats finished in second, third, fifth and sixth places resulting in Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron retaining the trophy on points. Victories by RBYC junior fleet in the Extreme Dinghies indicated a future threat although it looks like the trophy will stay securely at St Kilda until the juniors are old enough to join General Committee. Stuart Tait Vice Commodore of RMYS offered RBYC Commodore John Spencer asylum at RMYS as it was doubted he d be welcomed back at Brighton for a while. Our Senior Team was made up of: Vice Commodore Stuart Tait, Club Captain Stuart Addison, Tony Warren and Peter Davison. Many thanks to the juniors who helped out competing in the Extremes, the race officer Janet Dean and her team, and the BBQ operators. Rigging up for the Regatta

In its 133rd year, Stuart is joined by Flag Officers Linda Goldsmith, Vice Commodore, Ian Lodewyckx, Rear Commodore and Philip Battey, Club Captain. New hand on the Wheel at St Kilda new commodore at Royal MeLbourne Yacht Squadron Stuart Tait is the new Commodore of Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron. In its 133rd year, Stuart is joined by Flag Officers Linda Goldsmith, Vice Commodore, Ian Lodewyckx, Rear Commodore and Philip Battey, Club Captain. I started sailing around St Kilda on a Sailfish I built myself back in 1973 said Stuart. While the club has been sailing at St Kilda since 1876, I ve been a member for seven years. The Squadron is a very warm and welcoming club, which makes it easy to meet new people and get involved. What I m really passionate about is getting more people involved in sailing. Stuart s fondest sailing memories include the 1982 Brisbane to Gladstone race on a 45 ft catamaran surfing at speeds up to 25 knots off Fraser Island at night with no power, and knowing the reefs of Lady Elliot Island lay somewhere ahead. He now races his Farr 38 Portofino in Melbourne s Port Phillip Bay with the occasional offshore trip to islands to the south. While Stuart is working with Squadron members to increase participation in sailing and strengthen links with the local St Kilda Community, there is also the development of the St Kilda Safe Harbour and floating marina. The Squadron is going through changes and over the next five years we will see a dramatic improvement in facilities and many more opportunities for people to be involved in sailing and boating at St Kilda. It s an exciting time ahead said Stuart.

Dennis Livingston Race Director 1145 hrs 15 Aug August 2009 Cunard House Flag, Ensign Sally Williams, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 The Cunard House Flag, Ensign is currently displayed at RMYS. In a letter to Ken Simpson, Past Commodore of RMYS, Angus Bartlett Bragg writes: " I am told that Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, has run events in response to the Bushfire Appeal and has, I understand, been effective in raising funds for this cause. I seek your advice on displaying the Cunard Flagship Queen Mary 2 House Flag on the Yacht Squadron premises for the appreciation of the members of your Squadron. First I should explain here that whilst transiting the Pacific as part of the Queen Mary World Voyage, a sum of a little over AUD 95,000 was raised by the Commodore, Officers, ship's company and passengers on board the Flagship for the Victorian Red Cross Bushfire Appeal. Auction, raffles and other fund raising events were the order of the day. On the last night before reaching Sydney, in a last fundraising crowning moment, the Commodore threw in the ship's House Flag, cased and framed, for

83 auction. The Flag stood alone that night. It alone was felt to signify a fitting closure to the ship's response to the appeal, and a fitting prelude to her arrival in Australia." Angus Bartlett Bragg is a member of the Consular Corps Melbourne, Athenaeum Club, Pacific Institute, Royal Melbourne Golf Club, RUSI and the Public Officer of the Victorian Branch of the Submarine Association of Australia. Leigh Brennan Smith of the Royal Melbourne Sail Training Academy says: Our Sunday morning junior training is going to be very exciting this year. With the new Academy up and running we ve invested in new boats, better facilities and instructors in order to make Royal Melbourne the best place on the bay to get into sailing. Our six new Opti Tackers allow us to teach sailing to juniors from six years and up and our bigger Heron and Pacer dinghies will allow our older students to be challenged for longer and learn better sailing skills. Like many Squadron members I m passionate about sailing, however I believe that the kids must have fun first in order to keep coming back. Sailing is a great sport and our concentration in the Academy on juniors and schools programs will hopefully result in bringing more young people into sailing which can provide fun, excitement and friendship through one s whole life. Contact Leigh Brennan Smith of the Royal Melbourne Sail Training Academy on (03) or training@rmys.com.au for more information.
