1 M.A.G.P.I.E. Mining, Android, Geological, Prospecting, Ion-Engine If you are/were in the U.S. Military or govt. employee, the nomenclature makes complete sense! The Story It s approximately the year Technology and the Global Space Program has progressed and Earth is now mining asteroids for minerals, precious gems, etc.. The MAGPIE, with it's inexpensive mass produced toy like Ion Engine costs little more than a digital watch did in the early 1980's. Reliable, cheap and disposable, the MAGPIE is a single use probe, and composition analyzer. Because of it s size and ease of use/deployability, an Earth based mining ship can carry thousands of MAGPIES! They are shot like corks from bottles, by a launcher similar to the American Hedge Hog depth charge launcher from the ancient WW-II era. Tens, hundreds, even thousands even can be sent out to a prospective ROID where they are maneuvered into individual prospecting positions using laser guidance. Upon reaching it's designated coordinates, the MAGPIE unfolds it's tripod legs, and using laser it's own laser triangulation landing guidance, lands. Using a combination of it's ion engines and using laser ranging, it lowers itself as low as possible, keeping it's body as parallel to the surface as possible. Once in position, it fires a propellant charge, which sends a projectile ram probe into the rock, while simultaneously utilizing the recoil 'back blast', to keep from flying off into space. The probe has several orifices the material blasted away from it's forceful penetration enters. Within fractions of a second the material is analyzed. After the analyses is complete, several seconds later, the MAGPIE relays the composition of the mineral sample back to the main ship, where Geologists determine whether the area should, and is able to be mined proper. The simple and ingenious MAGPIE alleviates the unnecessary risky job of prospecting, once done by Space Miners themselves, saving billons in mining, labor and safety costs! OK- How to build the 1/1full scale model Use for all Model Rocket versions I ll be using a poor printing of the blue Limited N.S.L. version, as my demonstrator: note*- This toy was not designed as a HIGH-PRECISION model, so just have fun, and don t try and make it one! It s best to start with the fins, since they need to be set aside to dry the longest: Cut out the rectangles, score the center lines, place glue on one side, fold over matching the edges of the rectangle as perfectly as possible, and press/roll flat, then set aside..see the following pictures 1 2

2 3 Cut out the other pieces, and then carefully cut out the yellow Launch rod holes. Glue the base with the colored portion CURVING INWARD! (concave) Glue the individual sections into their shapes. (note*-this model is set up to evenly space out all the seams for a more even appearance) This would be a good time to check the fit of the motor tube, through the hole n the base, and make sure it fits easily-snugly (not too lose) through.

3 6 7 Find the small tick mark on the lower shell piece, and the other tick mark on the base. Lining up these 2 marks insures the launch lug hole are in alignment! OK, I won t lie, gluing the base plate on isn t an easy task! So here s the best way I found to do it: First of all- Don t Overuse the glue! Work with just small dabs placed on the inside rim of the shell. Start by tacking the area at the tick marks together, place dabs in small spots around the inside of the shell, then turn the model upright on a flat surface, and using even pressure over the top, carefully work the base under the shell lip. Old pressure for about 30 seconds, and then let it dry for a short time. Using a toothpick and small dabs of glue, you can tack the base where needed. This is not a high stress part, The base s main function helps keep the motor tube straight and in alignment while installing it, so again; don t use a lot of glue! 8 9 You should double check the alignment o the launch rod holes now too!

4 10 Place a few dabs of glue on the motor tube where shown, and with a twisting motion, insert it through the base and up against the top of the shell. Align the tubs as shown, with the motor tube seam opposite the base seam. Set the assembly on a flat surface and adjust the shell so that it looks an even distance from the surface all the way around. (make sure the critter is straight with the motor tube- YES!. use a ruler if you want to be serious- ) After they have been drying for a few hours (at least you SHOULD wait that long )- Carefully cut ot the fins, and

5 glue them on, OR just next to the black (fin) lines on the motor tube. (gluing them just next to the lines, lets the lines be used to help align them properly) (I told you it isn t a high tech precision model ) Give it while to dry, and your M.A.G.P.I.E. is ready for deployment! The model is designed for using a 13mm Estes A10PT motor, but any 13X45mm will work, though your M.A.G.P.I.E. s lifespan might not be as long GO FLY THE THING! BE SAFE! HAVE FUN!
