5 NOTATION & WARNING The EC standards apply to full equipment in conformity with the EC configurations certified by the notified bodies having issued the EC type examination. Not respecting this procedure invalidates the EC marking. To know all the configurations certified to the EC/97/23 directive, please refer to the SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE document ref 007/05/BE/DESP. This manual is to be used by end users, trained to the utilization and basic checking of the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE. It must not be used by users who have not been previously trained on such a device. As SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE continuously works on the improvement of all its products, there might be modifications to the supplied device in the future. Therefore, requests for free replacement of any element of the device based on this manual indication or drawing and description will be rejected. The framed recommendations have the following meanings: WARNING: If these instructions are not observed, the equipment being used could be seriously damaged, putting its wearer in danger. NOTE: If these instructions are not observed, the equipment concerned may be used incorrectly, possibly causing damage to it. WARNING Use the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE for escape only. The user must : - be familiar with this user manual. - be recognized as being apt to wear an escape breathing apparatus. - have been regularly and appropriately trained under real conditions of use - before use, the user must also refer to the official safety requirements in force specific to this particular usage. THE DEVICE MUST - be checked in accordance with standards specified by SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE. - be accompanied by a check sheet stating the date of the previous verification, and the date on which the cylinders were tested. Before use, be sure the environmental conditions warrant safe working conditions of the equipment. SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE declines all responsibility if these recommendations are not respected. This device is designed to protect the user s airways against gas, dust and toxic aerosols, and when the oxygen content in the atmosphere is depleted (less than 17%). 5

FENZY BIO-S-CAPE TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION The FENZY BIO-S-CAPE is an emergency escape breathing apparatus, which is designed to provide breathing protection during escape, and has been made in accordance with EN 1146 standard. It is mainly composed with: - a breathing hood with panoramic vision, - a pressure reducer valve with automatic activated air flow, - a high pressure breatheable air cylinder, - a carrying bag enabling to wear the device around the neck and to protect it from liquids and solid projections. 2.1 Operating principle The FENZY BIO-S-CAPE is a self-contained open-circuit emergency escape breathing apparatus, equipped with a high pressure compressed air cylinder. This device supplies the user with a constant flow of breatheable air. The high pressure compressed air contained in the cylinder is reduced to a medium pressure by the HP/MP reducer valve and a constant air flow then inflates the hood. This air flow is calibrated and it maintains a slight positive pressure inside the hood. 2.2 Carrying bag Use the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE for escape only. A large adjustable neck strap, with 2 points of attachment and a quick adjusting buckle, offers a great comfort. A waist strap is also available on option. The upper part is secured by 2 strong PVC Velcro bands and a safety seal. The red coloured handle offers a quick and full bag opening and automatic reducer flow activation. The HP reducer valve and the gauge are visible all the time thanks to the bag large window. To use in an explosive atmosphere, contact us. 7

8 2.3 HP/MP Pressure reducer valve The pressure reducer valve is activated automatically. It completely stabilizes the breatheable air flow in the hood, whatever the pressure level in the cylinder and the breathing rhythm. Fixed directly on the neck of the cylinder, it is equipped with a connector, with a check valve. The pressure reducer valve works at 200 or 300 bars. It can be used at temperatures ranging from 30 C to + 70 C. This pressure reducer valve is equipped with a built-in safety valve, which secures the air feed of the hood in case problems occur. 2.4 Warning whistle Incorporated in the hood connector hose, an effective whistle alarms the operator when the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE comes to the end of air reserve. The whistle remains audible until the cylinder is empty. This whistle does not consume any air at all, as it is re-circulated in the hood. 2.5 Working pressure gauge The high pressure gauge, which is included in the reducer, easily shows the residual pressure in the cylinder. For information, at 15 C, the high pressure gauge must indicate a pressure corresponding to the maximum filling level of the cylinder. 2.6 Breathing hood The hood fully isolates the user offering a maximum comfort and visibility at the same time. The hood is quickly pulled out of the bag. It can be easily adjusted and remains flexible thanks to the automatic inflatable air cushion. The neck seal is made of soft synthetic rubber (non-allergic) to reach a perfect tightness. The inner Half Mask avoids the visor to mist and minimizes the dead space of the hood. The donning of the Inner Half-Mask is performed automatically owing to the inflatable air cushion integrated in the neck. 8

9 2.7 Cylinders The Compressed air cylinders must be in accordance with the European 97/23/CE council regarding compressed air equipments. Compressed air cylinders used with breathing apparatus may be made of metal or composite materials and must contain breatheable air in conformity with EN standard. Check easily the stored cylinder pressure by having a look on the pressure gauge of the FENZY BIO-S- CAPE. If the gauge indicates a pressure lower than 280 bars for a standard 300 bars cylinder and a pressure lower than 180 bars for a standard 200 bars cylinder at a 15 C temperature, then these cylinders must be refilled with breatheable air. The volume of air carried is calculated based on the capacity and the filling pressure of the cylinder, for example : One 2-liter cylinder at 200 bars contains: 2 x 200 = 400 liters of air The duration of the apparatus depends on the quantity of air carried, and the constant air flow of the device. INSTRUCTION FOR USE Only the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE, which has been regularly maintained in accordance with this instruction manual, should be used. For safety reasons, during the regular inspections, it is recommended to check visually if there is enough air contained in the cylinder of the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE. 3.1 Fast checks before use Be sure the constant pressure gauge indicates the correct pressure for the maximum possible air volume, at a 15 C temperature. If the indicated pressure is lower, the apparatus should be withdrawn from use as its autonomy would have then a lower duration. The device must be checked and refilled. Check the integrity seal of the carrying bag has not been damaged or broken. In that case, do not use the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE. 3.2 Donning procedures Use the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE for escape only. 9

10 Take the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE 1-Put the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE strap around your neck. 2-Open the bag, maintaining it with one hand, and pulling on the handle with the other hand. The integrity seal is then automatically broken. 3-The pressure reducer valve is automatically activated, the air contained in the cylinder is now released, and a constant flow then inflates the hood. 10

11 4-Take the breathing hood out and check the breatheable air inflates continuously the hood and the cushion. 4.bis-.If the air does not inflate the hood and the neck cushion is not inflated, ensure the firing-pin is out of the cylinder top and pull the cylinder top. 5-Put the hood on your head as follows: 5.1.-To put the hood on your head, place the palms of your hands together and insert them through the rubber neck seal, which secures the tightness neck / hood. Then, open the hands to open the neck seal and hood. 11

12 5.2.-Ensure finger nails or rings do not snag or tear the tightness neck seal and that clothes or hair have not been trapped. Check if the inner half mask is correctly placed on your nose and mouth. Never use the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE if the air flow into the hood is not perfectly audible. Never use the device when the seal is damaged. Breathe normally and leave the hazard area to the next safest place or emergency exit. A pictogram of the operating instructions is clearly visible on the bag. 3.3 Operating instructions During the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE utilization, breathe normally and check periodically the permanent pressure gauge. Make sure not to catch on the air feed tube of the hood, which could tear the hood off. Do not shock the apparatus. The warning whistle gives out until the cylinder is empty. Never keep the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE on your head, if the air flow into the hood is not perfectly audible or if the cylinder is empty. 12

13 3.4 After operation Remove the breathing hood Remove the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE Return the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE to SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE technical department. To remove the hood, put both your thumbs inside the tightness neck seal and take it off. Never let go of or drop the breathing device onto the ground. 4. ROUTINE MAINTENANCE 4.1 Filling cylinders There are some National standards for compressed air cylinders, which must be respected all the time; Only fill the cylinders that : - comply with the European standards, and which are fitted with a pressure reducer valve that also complies with the European or national standards. The test date, the stamp of the approved body shall be indicated on the non-expired cylinder (for example : Mines our TUV ). - have not exceeded their retesting date. - have no faults that could cause a risk of accident. - have no apparent signs of humidity (water drops) on the threaded connector. The moisture content in the breatheable air is important for the correct operation of breathing device. Therefore check that : - Cylinders contain breatheable air in accordance with EN standard, that specifies data under normal conditions of use, at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature. - The cylinder pressure reducer valve should be closed immediately after its use to avoid presence of moisture in the cylinder. - If they are accidentally moistured, they must be dried. There are special cylinder ovens for this purpose. The filling connector is fitted with the valve reducer, which can be operated to vacuum the cylinder before air refilling. The cylinder valves are fragile components. Make a visual inspection after each operation. 4.2 Cleaning, drying and disinfecting After every use : - the breathing device must be cleaned - the breathing hood must be cleaned and disinfected 13

14 Cleaning First, sponge the dirty and / or polluted elements with lukewarm water, adding a mild cleaning agent (soapy water) and then rinse them under running water. Check that the cleaning agent chosen does not contain any corrosive components that could damage the rubber elements of the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE: Test it previously. Make sure neither liquid nor dirt soaks into the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE cavities. Drying After cleaning, dry very carefully all elements of the device with a low pressure compressed air jet to eliminate all traces of moisture. Be careful not to put the compressed air jet inside the cavity, which contains delicate parts as membranes, springs, valves, seals, etc. It could damage them. Drying temperature of the device must be between 5 C and 50 C. Disinfecting When you have finished cleaning and drying, you must disinfect the breathing hood with a disinfecting product. To do it, it is recommended to: Put the hood in an ultra-sonic washer to clean and to disinfect it: - Submerge the hood in the ultra-sonic bath with the bactericidal fungicidal and virucidal EPI U-S product (distributed by SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE), comply with the instructions indicated on the recipient. User who has no ultra-sonic bath must sponge the hood with soapy water, rinse it with clarified water. Then disinfect it with a bactericidal CLINIPLAN towel (distributed by SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE). 4.3 FENZY BIO-S-CAPE inspection Check operation of the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE after each cleaning operation and whenever you have replaced any spare parts. Check and maintenance operations must be carried out by an authorized technician from SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE. This technician must operate with a test bench, specific tools and guaranteed SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE genuine spare parts. 4.4 Storage Cleaned and dried the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE may be stored in a dust free cabinet or in special boxes. Make sure the device is properly placed and the strap is not folded. FENZY BIO-S-CAPE must be stored in rooms at a cool temperature. These rooms must be dry and free from gas and vapour releases. Avoid any strong direct light source and sunlight, and do not keep close to a source of heat radiation. The storage temperature should be between 15 C and 30 C: For storage under particular conditions (as outside storage place, etc.), contact our technical department. 14

SERVICING AND CHECKING OPERATIONS FREQUENCY Carry out the following checks on all FENZY BIO-S-CAPE: Before Use: - Check the pressure in the cylinder - Check the integrity of the seal Periodical Checks: - Check pressure gauge - Check the integrity of the seal - Check the external aspect - Check the firing-pin on the cylinder Every 6 years: The complete overhaul of the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE including the pressure reducer valve must be made by an authorized agent from SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE. Compressed Air Cylinders The cylinders must be in accordance with the European Directive 97/23/CE on the compressed Air cylinders. They have to be checked in accordance with local regulations. 6. SPARE PARTS The FENZY BIO-S-CAPE spare parts and their references are presented in exploded views available on request. 7. MANUFACTURER WARRANTEE LIMIT In accordance with the essential European 89/686/EEC council requirements and with our manufacturer prescriptions, check and maintenance operations must be carried out by qualified trained and authorized professionals from SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE. Operate only with a test bench, specific tools and SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE genuine spare parts, and respect imperatively checking and maintenance recommendations mentioned in this manual. In accordance with these regulations, this warrantee excludes all apparatus including parts other than those supplied or replaced by SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE and which are EC certified. 15

16 8. USER S TRAINING AND ASSISTANCE All the SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE breathing apparatus are designed to be inspected by the user. However, this requests a minimum of technical knowledge. Training can be organized at the customer s office or in our own training room. The complete training program for the FENZY BIO-S-CAPE maintenance is available on request. SPERIAN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION FRANCE distributes an electronic test bench to guarantee the quality of the work done.
