Giv ach studnt six markrs. 4. Invit a studnt voluntr to act as th callr (or do so yourslf). Provid th callr with th Callr s Chart and a brown bag or box filld with th cut-apart word cards. 5. Ask th callr to pull out a card (such as jp), rad it aloud, and plac it on th Callr s Chart. 6. Whn a word appars on a studnt s board, h/sh covrs it with a markr. 7. Play continus with th callr rading aloud ach word and studnts covring th words with markrs. Whn a studnt has covrd all six words on his/hr laddr, that studnt shouts, Phonics Bingo! 8. Th callr should thn chck th answrs to mak sur that studnt is, in fact, a winnr. If so, lad studnts in round of applaus. (NOTE: If you ar playing with multipls copis of th sam bingo laddrs, thr will b multipl winnrs.) 6

7 Phonics Activitis to Extnd Larning Rinforc phonmic awarnss with a varity of quick listning activitis, such as th following: Listn Up! Tll childrn that you ar going to say som words that contain th sound you ar studying (slug, slim, slump). You will also say a word that dosn t blong (flat). Whn thy har th word that dosn t blong, thy ar to say Buzzzz! For a variation, gathr childrn in an opn ara and invit thm to run around you as you shout out words that hav th sam phonics lmnt. Whn thy har th word that dosn t blong, thy should frz. Mak lttr cards for a,, i, o, and u. Distribut a st to ach child. Tll childrn you ar going to say a word that contains a short vowl, such as pig. Hav childrn hold up th corrct vowl (i). Continu in this mannr with othr short-vowl words. On anothr day, rpat th activity with words that contain long vowls. Choos a digraph such as sh. Tll childrn you ar going to say som words, and thy ar to tll you if thy har th faturd sound at th bginning or nd of th word. If thy har th sound at th bginning (as in ship), thy should put thir fingrs to thir lips and say shhh. If thy har th sound at th nd (as in dish), thy should put thir hands togthr and wiggl thm lik a fish. Rpat th activity with othr digraphs and movmnts. For multisyllabic words, tll childrn you ar going to say som words and thy ar going to clap to show how many syllabls, or word parts, thy har. For xampl, if you say th word grasshoppr, thy will clap thr tims: grass (clap) hop (clap) r (clap). Rpat th activity with othr multisyllabic words. Silly Sntncs Writ a silly sntnc on th board that contains svral words faturing a targt sound, such as tr. Includ an undrlind word that is on or two lttrs from bing corrct, for xampl: Th tricky trolls travld on a choo-choo grain. Ask a voluntr to chang th lttr(s) to form a word that maks sns in th sntnc (train). Hav childrn ras th old word and writ th nw on in its plac. Continu with othr silly sntncs. 7

You can also giv childrn clus, such as I spy somthing that is round. It rprsnts th world.
