It wasn t noon yt, but th sun had alrady mad th Txas plains hottr than an ovn. Bob Lmmons pulld his wid-brimmd hat tightr to his had and rod slowly away from th ranch. Good luck, Bob! somon ylld. Bob didn t rspond. His mind was alrady on th wks ahad. H walkd his hors slowly, bing in no particular hurry. That was on thing h had larnd arly. On didn t captur a hrd of mustang horss in a hurry. Bob lookd around him, and as far as h could s th land was flat, strtching unbrokn lik th cloudlss sky ovr his had until th two smd to mt. Nothing appard to b moving xcpt him on his hors, but h knw that a hrd of mustangs could b galloping nar th horizon lin at that momnt and h would b unabl to s thm until thy cam much closr. 8

Th tracks wr no mor than thr days old and h xpctd to catch sight of th hrd in th nxt day or two. A hrd didn t travl in a straight lin, but rangd back and forth within what thy considrd thir trritory. H untid his blankt from bhind th saddl and laid it out on th ground. Thn h rmovd th saddl from th hors and tid th animal to a post. H took his suppr out of th saddlbags and at slowly as th chilly night air smd to ris from th plains that a fw short hours bfor had bn too hot for a man to walk on. H thrw th blankt around his shouldrs, wishing h could mak a fir. But if h had, th smll of wood smok in his cloths would hav bn dtctd by any hrd h got clos to. Aftr ating h laid his had back against his saddl and covrd himslf with his thick Mxican blankt. Th chillinss of th night mad th stars look to him lik shining slivrs of ic. H saddld his hors and rod off, following th tracks h had discovrd th prvious vning. H followd thm wst until h was crtain thy wr lading him to th Pcos Rivr. H smild.
