Dvon Goodnight, a snior at Purdu in th dpartmnt of English ducation, and Michal Hilton, a snior at Indiana Univrsity studying tlcommunication, hav ach survivd Grand Prix and th Littl 500 and ar aliv to talk about thir xprincs. Q: If any two univrsitis wr hosting vnts lik what Purdu and IU do for Grand Prix and Littl 5, what would mak on bttr than th othr? Goodnight: For m, it would b about what s actually going on and how wll th community was rsponding to all th vnts on campus. Hilton: I would say how th community gts involvd. If vryon gts togthr to hav a grat tim and has no nmis, only fun, thn it s a blast gtting th community togthr. Q: What do you know about Grand Prix and Littl 5? Goodnight: I know Lil 5 was around sinc th 50s and Grand Prix cam along a fw yars latr. Lil 5 has a bicycl rac and Grand Prix is a gokart rac. I know thr ar dif- on, lik anyon can ntr and rac at Lil 5 as long as you r a studnt at IU and hav a crtain GPA, and at Grand Prix for th go-kart rac you hav to b part of a largr crw lik a grk hous or co-op. Hilton: Wll this is th 64th annual Lil 5 rac. It s a bik rac and popl will start partying at th start of th wk. A lot of profssors hr will mak it an asy wk. Thy undrstand it s a bunch of popl inviting frinds and partying all wk to clbrat this bik rac that not that many popl go to. I v nvr bn thr, but I m going to try to mak it this yar. Honstly, I had no ida Grand Prix was a go-kart rac until you just told m. I thought it was a bik rac too. Q: What is th prcption of Grand Prix and Littl 5 outsid of th Univrsitis? Goodnight: That s kind of vryon I talk to thinks Lil 5 is awsom. Popl in Indiana talk about Lil 5 who don t vn go to IU. I don t rally know anyon who talks about Grand Prix outsid of Purdu. Hilton: Evryon just thinks Lil 5 is this crazy vnt with vryon drinking non-stop and skipping classs and drinking through th day. That s kind of what it is. I saw somwhr that class attndanc was down to 50 prcnt during this wk. I havn t bn to Grand Prix so I can t say much, just bcaus it s during th sam wk and I can t miss what s going on hr. Q: How sobr is campus during th wk? Goodnight: I d say what I s on campus is a thr or a four out of 10, with on bing compltly wastd. But that s just th majority. I know popl who still hav projcts and can t rally drink. Hilton: Oh, man. Thr wr popl out on thir porchs just shotgunning brs in th middl of th day. I d say it s prtty wastd. You ll walk down on block and s popl just chugging in th strt. I wnt out Monday to th bars and it was packd. Q: What storis hav you hard from popl who wnt to both Grand Prix and Lil 5? Goodnight: Wll, thy r both vry similar. For Grand Prix, I can walk down th strt right now and s popl out drinking and partying. At IU, it s th sam thing, but it s on a biggr lvl. Purdu has lik 60 or 70 prcnt of th campus partying, but thr s still that 30 prcnt you nvr s. But if I wnt to IU, I couldn t walk down th strt without sing somon compltly drunk and it would happn a lot, lik a community thing. But again, Lil 5 kind of has that notority. Hilton: I know popl who gt crazy at Purdu too bcaus I hav frinds who wnt to Purdu this wk and hav frinds from Purdu who ar hr too. But I v nvr rally hard anyon compar thm. I had a frind go to Grand Prix ystrday and sh calld it hr brak from Lil 5. I don t know as many popl this yar going btwn, but I know a lot of popl do try to gt involvd with both.

Chip Challis Pi Kappa Phi Racing I am xcitd to rprsnt Pi Kappa Phi Racing in Purdu Grand Prix. I strongly ncourag studnts to gt involvd in Purdu Grand Prix and othr hands on larning opportunitis at Purdu. I lov comptition and am xcitd to gt th opportunity to tst our tam s skill, talnt, and luck this yar in Grand #22 Prix. 3. Camdn Spth Tchnology McCutchon GP old. I rally njoy th comptitiv aspct of racing and bing abl to rac popl who want to win just as much as I do. Mik Prugini I m xcitd about driving a clan rac and bringing hom anothr trophy for th boys. Snior, collg IUPUI Motorsports 2 #2 Cary Racing 2 I v bn racing sinc I got my racing in Nw Castl, Indiana. Jaim Ortga SHPE Racing I bgan racing whn I was 11. I bgan bcaus I wantd to do Motorcross but my parnts advisd I try out go-kart instad (so) I chos go-karts ovr Motorcross. My favorit thing about racing is th thrill and xhiliartion of driving on th limit. Last yar, I lad th rac for svral laps aftr taking th lad with an ovrtaking #18 manuvr. 9. Stphn Lawri nginring Dlta Upsilon I was on th tam last yar and thy wr looking for a nw drivr, my favorit thing (about Grand Prix has bn) practicing with my tam and improving my tims. # Brian Parm ASME (Th bst part about what I do is) just working with th tam, njoying th procss and focusing on gtting th bst rsult possibl. Bing at th track on rac day with vryon thr and gtting to rac maks it all worth it. # Alx Nwman IIE My favorit thing would hav to b th adrnalin rush and pushing th go-kart to vr racing go-karts. # Brandon Biga Chmical My favorit part of Grand Prix is actually attacking all of th diffrnt problms that w hav ach yar and thn sing how adjustmnts affct us on th track. Much of th kart st-up is a scinc down to prcis numbrs, but th driving rmains an art form. A dpndabl tam is crucial for succss, and th comptition maks it all th mor intrsting for both participants #6 and spctators. 14. Allison Schoch IUPUI Girls Tam I v bn racing for 14 yars: 14 in gokarts, four in Lgnds Cars. It s hard to go against all mn;; thy can ithr b accpting of you as a fmal drivr and rac you lik anyon ls, or thy can b bad sports and not b okay with th chanc of a woman bating thm. # Ptr Martucci Pi Kappa Alpha I rmmbr bing part of th Grand Prix sinc my frshman yar, whn I startd off just hlping out my tam. Ryan Kn Studnt Vtran Organization I m looking forward to th comptition and th camaradri that our tam has. It s nrv-wracking at tims, but I v got a solid tam bhind m and I think that s ky to doing wll in this rac. # Nick Hal Sigma Chi 2 I v bn racing sinc I was svn yars old, my dad got m into it. I startd (with) go-karts, thn mini-sprints and now 410 sprint cars. I v always njoyd how comptitiv and challnging racing is. In thos days, it wasn t vn apparnt if th inaugural Grand Prix rac would turn into a tradition, but with a topnotch nginring program, popl wantd a fun way to show off what thy knw. It was run on th north in- parking lot and vry kart was built from scratch, had a lawnmowr ngin and could barly xcd 30 mils an hour. Jams Monyhun bcam Grand Prix. Racrs drov 144 laps, th quivalnt of 60 mils, at an avrag spd of 22.6 mph. It wasn t glamorous by any mans, but it was a tstamnt to th work and skill rquird to crat somthing from nothing {span class= st } {/ span} an nginr s spcialty. A track was compltd in 1969 in tim for th 11th annual Grand Prix rac and was carfully modld aftr th World Kart Championship Track in Japan. Th Purdu Auto Club was cratd and maintaind sponsorship ovr th Grand Prix, acting as th govrning body as wll. Howvr, th Auto Club was disbandd and th longvity of th rac was thratnd. Th studnts pushd for a rplacmnt group to kp th tradition aliv, and with th cration of th Grand Prix Foundation, th lgnd was nabld to liv on. Today, ach tam s kart is still built from scratch with an avrag cost of $5,000 using mony partially raisd by a tam sponsor. Th ngin has also bn upgradd lading to a highr spd rac, with all karts using a Yamaha KT-100 ngin. Thy ach rac on a nw track, compltd in 2009 and locatd at th cornr of Mc- Cormick Road and Chrry Lan. This nw track, though similar in dsign, is widr and altogthr safr for both th kart tams and th track workrs. Th track cost th Univrsity $1 million altogthr and is still considrd on of th prmir karting facilitis in th country, largly bcaus of its advancd computr scoring systm. Th 52 comptitors racd wk, wding down th pack to th traditional 33 racrs. Yt th gratst spctacl in collg racing has sn dclining intrst in th past fw yars, whil Littl 500, stablishd in 1951, numbrs rportd as bing fairly stabl ovr tim, if not growing. Th movmnt of th track in 2009 may b a factor to dcrasd attndanc studnts say and Mary Furlough, prsidnt of th Grand Prix Foundation, agrd. Moving th track obviously poss som challngs for th board, but I do not think thr is a dcras in intrst. Instad, I think th board now has a gratr obligation to promot th rac sinc th track is no longr as clos to campus. Wad Cadwalladr, a snior in th Tchnology and mmbr of th Purdu Ramr Club, said thr ar many Purdu traditions that hav phasd thir way out of popularity. Thr was on, it usd to b calld Miss IU and it was vry yar bfor th Purdu/ IU football gam and thy pp-rally if you will, Cadwalladr xplaind. Thy usd to hav ths mannquins drssd lik an IU chrladr and thy would always put it bcaus popl thought it was sxist. Grand Prix is, in som rspcts, following in th shadows of traditions lik Miss IU, bcoming synonymous for a wk-long raucous culminating in an all-bts-ar-off drunk fst on Saturday. Our blovd tradition is not about clbrating fats of ingnuity by th driving crws, it is instad clbrating fats of th lack throf of our crws. Cadwalladr, in th four yars h has attndd Purdu, said h hasn t vr sn th rac. Though h admits, it may man somthing diffrnt for thos who do. somthing you can rlat with alumni on. Evr sinc 1958, you could talk to anyon that somthing thy gt. I know a lot of popl party but if you ar actually participating, it s Furlough, who works xtnsivly with rac alumni, said th rac is a point of prid to many. Th rac is vry important to our alumni bcaus thy spnt tim as a studnt dvloping th foundation into what it is today, sh said. Just as I am proud of all th work my board and I hav put into th rac, our alumni look back on fond mmoris of Grand Prix, and thy ar proud of thir fforts. Ovr th yars, th Grand cial programs for th Univrsity, such as th many scholarships givn to studnts (this yar was totald at $11,000) and th Grand Altrnativ, a fr concrts and activitis lading up to Grand Prix. Furlough said th foundation s motto Studnts hlping studnts, is th driving factor for th whol rac. Our sol purpos is to organiz and produc a saf, fun rac for th participants, and through that rais mony for scholarships, Furlough said. Additionally, th rac offrs a crativ outlt for studnts to display thir tchnical skills. Bcaus our focus is on dvloping studnts, th Univrsity continus to support us in our fforts.

To quot Ricky Bobby, last, said Jimmy Simpson, who s won th rac th last two yars and will compt again on Saturday for Dlta Tau Dlta. Simpson, a snior in th - Saturday tim trials with a tim of On th track, Simpson rids by himslf in th go-kart but that dosn t man h s doing it alon. H crdits much of his succss to his crw and support from his fratrnity brothrs and family. Simpson has drivn for Dlta Tau Dlta fratrnity for th past two yars and has bn run th rac in many yars. According to Simpson, th fratrnity hadn t participatd in th rac sinc th arly 80s and hadn t won in many yars prior to that. It s a point of prid for (my fratrnity), h said. A lot of th guys in th hous will donat thir own prsonal mony to our go-kart fund;; (th rac) mans a lot to thm. His succss has drawn many xprincd drivrs into th Dlta Tau Dlta fratrnity, including frshman Camdn Spth, th drivr for th McCutchon Grand Prix tam. Spth mimickd Saturday, placing third for McCutchon. Simpson said much of his succss coms from having a grat tam working bhind th scns and off th track. A lot of popl will say Oh, Jimmy Simpson won, but it s not just m, h said. My tam busts thir butts for nothing;; thy don t gt paid, and thy don t gt th crdit thy dsrv. Julian Williams, David Schultz, Kurt Andrson, Billy Khamis and Tylr Grn all work thir butts off for Dlts Racing. Simpson s mothr, Dborah, agrd with th sntimnt. Thy r a grat bunch of kids, I m imprssd with vry singl on of thm. Thy r hard working;; I can t say nough good things about thm, said Dborah. Simpson said that Grand Prix is, mor than anything, a tam rac. You v got to hav a good tam and I think that s our biggst advantag;; w hav an xcllnt tam. Simpson has bn racing sinc th ag of 5 and has won many racs. Howvr, th accolads did not com through luck, but through hard work. I v noticd, bing out at th rac track myslf, h s th on to lav, said Dborah. Racing dos not com asy;; Jimmy works hard to do this. H puts in a lot of work and invsts a lot of tim in th sport. Racing is his passion. Simpson agrd saying h wants to continu racing and hops to on day b a comptitor in th Indy 500. If I m not in class or slping, I m working on our gokart, said Simpson.
