2 Back strain/injury. Know your weight lifting capacity and get help if needed. Lift using leg muscles. Keep back straight. Allergic reaction to plants. Wear gloves, long-sleeve shirt, and long pants. Volunteers will be asked if they have any know allergies to the local plants. Team leaders will instruct volunteers the proper way to lift and lower heavy objects. Volunteers will be advised to wear long sleeves and pants. Gloves will be provided to all volunteers who participate. All team leads will be required to attend a safety briefing the day before and the day the event. Gloves will be handed out at registration. Team leads will remind volunteers to wear their gloves during weed removal. Other hazards Poisonous plants Insects/animals Broken glass, cans, garbage Local safety personnel will provide the team an overview of other hazards the participants may be exposed to and offer remedies that routinely help ensure that participants are not exposed to these hazards. Be careful where you place your hands and feet. Also, be aware of plants used for replanting that are sharp or thorny. Coordinate with the local safety person to ascertain the hazards the team may be exposed to. Entry into areas will not be made until routine and known non-routine hazards are identified and the risks mitigated. Illegal drug activities Hostile people Lightning and Thunderstorms Law enforcement will be used as appropriate and be provided by the BLM LEOs and local police. Heavy rain, hail, and lightening occur only occur in the mature stages of a thunderstorm. Keep informed; know what the storm is doing. Involvement of the local safety person may include safety briefing to the team as well as coordination of law enforcement. When there is no shelter, avoid tall objects such as lone trees. If only isolated trees are nearby or if you are in open country, the best protection is to make yourself as small a target as possible. Drop to your knees, bend forward with your hands resting on your 2
3 knees, and keep a distance of twice the height of the nearest tree between you and the tree. Advise team members that if they feel an electrical charge, if their hair stands on end, or their skin tingles, a lightning strike may be imminent. Bug bites or stings. Wear gloves, long-sleeve shirt, and long pants. Wear bug repellent. Survey area and avoid areas with high concentration of bees and/or ants. Volunteers will be advised to wear long sleeves and pants. Gloves will be provided to all volunteers who participate. Gloves will be handed out at registration. Team leads will remind volunteers to wear their gloves during weed removal. Team leads will survey the project site and avoid areas that have high concentrations of bees or ants. Working around spiny/pointed plants. Working on uneven ground, steep slope. Weather Hot/Cold Cactus and other desert plants have sharp leafs and or spines. Working around them improperly may result in injury. Ensure the volunteers are briefed on safe handling techniques, including the use of tools. Wear proper boots. Watch where you step. Side step up or down the slope. Plant your feet and ensure a stable footing and body position prior to doing any labor. In hot weather wear a long sleeved shirt, hat, sunglasses, and sun block. Have and drink an ample amount of water to prevent dehydration. Do not over exert in high temperatures and take ample rest Conduct a tool safety briefing on site prior to work. Use proper tools, and PPE s; Heavy Gloves, eye protection, hat and proper footwear. Ensure not flip flops are wore. Work boots with high tops should be worn. Demonstrate proper step techniques and stable work positions. All team members will monitor not only their own condition but that of their team mates. Conducted on site by project supervisor. Project supervisor must ensure people use PPE s and use proper movement and work techniques up and down slope. On site supervisor to make the observations using the buddy check system. Monitor fluid intake of each person working the site. 3
4 Lifting/Carrying Heavy or awkward loads Biohazard and Blood Borne Pathogen exposure. Environmental hazards: Dust and wind Dust induced blindness, chapped skin. breaks. In cold weather wear layered clothing. Keep warm, but do not overheat and sweat. Wear water resistant and breathable clothing. In severe cold temperature keep out of the wind. Hot weather: Sun/wind burn, Dehydration, Heat exhaustion, and Heat stroke. Cold weather: Sun/wind burn, Chilblains, Frostnip, Frostbite, and Hypothermia. During the course of the events heavy or awkward materials must be moved to the work site. When lifting or carrying heavy/awkward loads use proper lifting techniques, (use your legs, not your back). Get help to carry the object if needed. Report locations when found, for properly trained personnel to remove. Use proper hand washing with soap and water after handling of all wastes. Sanitize equipment used in cleaning, label all contaminated equipment until it can be sanitized. Dust and wind are constant hazards: dress appropriately and consider carrying eye drops to mitigate the effects of dust in the eyes. Team leader will ensure that water is made available for all team members, that rest breaks are scheduled, and that the team is aware of their heat stress. Ensure proper PPE s are being worn (dressed for the weather). Use Sunscreen. Layered clothing. Ensure enough water is being taken in by everybody. Demonstrate proper lifting techniques and proper tool safety during the safety briefing. Training and personal protection and knowledge. Adhering to OSHA Standard 2 CFR All team members must protect themselves in the event of high winds and dust, by wearing the proper personal protection equipment and proper clothing. Supervisor assures employee has been trained and understands appropriate and safe field procedures in severe weather conditions. Conducted on site by the project supervisor. Supervisor assures that the employee has the training and personal protection equipment. Supervisor ensures employees are trained, supervisor/crew leaders ensure compliance. 4
5 Environmental hazards: Poisonous snakes Snakebite Environmental hazards: Fire Untrained personnel in an active fire zone. Using hand tool such as shovels, trash grabbers and rakes. If a poisonous snake is encountered: retreat. In the event of snakebite, follow first-aid procedures and transport the victim to the hospital immediately. If a recently ignited fire is observed, contact Dispatch with the location in Township & Range, and Section and retreat from the area. Use proper tools and ensure they are in good condition for the project. Use tools properly, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Ensure the volunteers are briefed on proper tool etiquette and safe handling techniques. Be careful of sharp edges on all tools. When a tool is not use make sure they are placed in a safe manner with sharp end down. Wear gloves to prevent blisters. Major Medical. Breaks, concussions, strokes, heart attacks, etc 5 All team members will need to watch where they put their hands and feet. Supervisors will brief team members the best they can on snake habitats. All team members must understand they are not trained to fight fires and that they must adhere to the safety regulations and retreat to the nearest safety area. Team leads will demonstrate the proper and safe use of hand tools to the volunteers. Team leads and volunteers will read manufacturer s instructions on tool use. Use the proper tool for the job. Hand Tools 29 CFR Ensure the people who are coming to work are able do the job. Maintain a stocked first aid kit, and have first aid trained personnel on site. Ensure proper communications and be aware of your surroundings. Supervisor ensures employees are trained, supervisor/crew leaders ensure compliance. Supervisor/crew leaders ensure employees are in compliance. Supervisor assures the employees and team leads are trained and understands safe and appropriate hand tool use. All team leads will be required to attend a safety briefing the day before and the day the event. Ensure all safety briefings have been conducted and they are being followed. The site supervisor will carry a charged portable radio on their person at all times, and be in contact with the Visitor Center. They will also know how to contact LAME Dispatch via radio and activate the 911 sequence when required.
