1 ACTIVITY Driving Motor Vehicles (on road) and Transport Vehicle collision, road accident, fatigue, dehydration Appropriate drivers licence Obey Tasmanian Road Rules Take frequent breaks from driving to avoid fatigue. Take water refreshment frequently. No-alcohol. No eating while driving. No smoking in vehicle Avoid unnecessary long distance driving. 2 ACTIVITY Manual Handling Muscle strains, joint sprains, cuts and bruises All staff to have at least been briefed on project-specific manual handling techniques. (If manual handling is a continuing activity requirement, personnel will undertake Manual Handling training.) Warm up prior to undertaking manual handling activity. Regular rest breaks scheduled. Appropriate number of personnel, and lifting equipment, used for lifting and moving activities. Specialised lifting equipment appropriate to the task. No existing back strain injury or history of recurrent back strain. If manual handling is a recurring and long term activity, Manual Handling Training is required. 4 ACTIVITY Using Chemicals Poisoning, skin irritation, breathing difficulty, long term health Chemicals to be used in accordance with safety instructions on container and according to Australian Standards for the Risk Class of chemical. LIST HERE SPECIFIC HANDLING AND USE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CHEMICALS YOU WILL BE USING All equipment, such as sprayers, to be checked regularly and before use All equipment to be cleaned and maintained after use All equipment to be securely stored and labelled while not in use Personal safety equipment as per recommendations on label. LIST SPECIFIC FOR THE CHEMICALS YOU WILL BE USING Training and experience in chemical use and handling The requirements of the Material Safety Data Sheet associated with the chemical being used Safe work procedures developed for use with the chemical substance. 7 ACTIVITY Wading in Rivers Immersion, cold reducing motor skills/co-ordination, hypothermia, drowning, changes in depth and flow causing falls, sun and wind exposure, bogging in mud. Minimum of two people (one on shore as observer at all times). Provide sunscreen and/or wide brimmed hat. Wear layered warm clothing, and wet weather gear as required. Assess local water conditions, including rapids, before proceeding. PFDs to be worn at all times. At least two personnel trained in advanced first aid. First Aid Back Pack carried. Use neoprene waders Personnel trained in river crossing techniques and wader safety. Do not use waders in water deeper than thigh height St Johns First Aid Kit (checked for supplies before departure) EPIRB, CDMA/SatPhone/VHF Radio River crossing and wader safety training. Workplace 2 First Aid Certificate (for at least two team members) Caution, checking underfoot conditions. Avoid conditions beyond competence. Escape techniques relating to bogging in mud. 8 ACTIVITY Boating Person overboard, drowning, capsize, sinking, collision with other boats, collision with stationary or submerged objects, mechanical failure, sun, wind and cold exposure, sea sickness, fire, rough sea conditions. Appropriately endorsed boat operators licence PFDs worn by all passengers and operator for boats below 7 metres in length PFDs carried for all passengers for boats over 7 metres in length Flares, fire extinguisher, baling bucket/bilge pump and oars (smaller boats) to be carried Do not exceed passenger and carrying capacity limits for vesssel. If in charge of the vessel (ie not a commercial ferry or charter service): Minimum of two people on board, or within sight of others participating in activity. Carry tool kit, spare spark plug, spare propellor Check weather forecast before proceeding. Check condition of motor and steering lines. Check that drainage plugs are in place before launching. If using an inflatable, carry hull repair kit Ensure loads and passengers are distributed evenly. In all cases Provide and use sunscreen. Wear layered warm clothing, and wet weather gear as required. Assess local water conditions, including rapids, before proceeding. Remain clear of area of propellor at all times. 10 ACTIVITY Handling Wildlife Invertebrates (including venomous species) Bites, pinches, venomous stings, infection, allergic reaction mild and chronic. Protective gloves to be worn at all times. People with known allergies to stings must carry appropriate medication and be able to self administer the medication. Other participants must be briefed on the location of the medication and the symptoms of the allergic reaction. First Aid Kit to be on-site (including anti-allergy medications). Protect all cuts and open wounds from contact with wildlife. First Aid Kit Personal allergy medications Protective gloves and other protective clothing appropriate to species being handled. Medical Disclosure Form. Specific handling techniques and risks for species being handled. Information on any participant who has a known allergy, their medication needs and location. 11 ACTIVITY Handling Wildlife Reptiles (including snakes) Bites non-venomous, bites venomous, infection All snake handlers must have completed an approved snake handling course. Snake handlers must have received training on snake bite first aid from an approved training provider. Snake handlers must always be accompanied by another person who is trained in snake bite first aid. Undertake basic hygiene measures after handling wildlife. Emergency services contact (phone, radio, satellite phone) must be available. Protective gloves and glasses to be worn at all times, and other safety clothing as appropriate to the species being handled. All open wounds or cuts to be protected from contact with animal. Protective gloves and glasses, and other protective clothing as appropriate First Aid Kit must be on site and include Envenomation Pack. 12 ACTIVITY Handling Wildlife Whales Major and minor injuries including bites, scratches, crushing and hits by tail flukes, infection All handlers must have experience, or received training, and/or briefing appropriate to task. Handlers should be in the company of another person at all times. Undertake basic hygiene procedures after handling First Aid kit on-site. Wet suit for in-water activity. Teams working in water to be supervised by a team leader who remains out of water Wet Suit for in-water activity No pre-existing or history of recurring back injury or strains. Preference for trained handlers (ie completion of Whale Rescue Training course). All staff and volunteers must have received safety and procedure briefing before undertaking rescue activity. Medical Disclosure Form Whale First Aid techniques. Warning about danger of whale tails and sudden movements. 13 ACTIVITY Collecting Road-kill Tasmanian Devils Traffic collision, chemical injury, biological infection (virus, bacteria and tissue) Park off the road in safe area. Avoid bends. Put vehicle hazard lights on. Pace hazard signs at both sides of recovery site. Wear reflective vest, stay in view of traffic and constantly monitor traffic conditions. If accompanied have partner monitor traffic conditions. Always bend from the knees when lifting objects. Always wear gloves, goggles, filtration mask and waterproof apron. Do not touch devil with anything but the plastic bag it is to be placed in. Ensure any pre-existing wounds you have are covered. Wash hands thoroughly after contact. Use chemicals only as directed on the container label. Use original chemical containers only. After delivery of animal to Vet, wash anything non-disposable that has touched the devil in a 1:30 dilution of Virkon or bleach. Wash hands thoroughly with a soap such as Microshield (the vet may be able to supply you with these) Large Plastic bags, gloves, filtration mask, safety goggles, waterproof apron. 14 ACTIVITY Whale Rescue Exposure to cold conditions slowing responses, and hypothermia. Heat exposure, dehydration, sunburn, crushing injuries from wildlife, bites, lifting injuries, exhaustion, cuts from sharp equipment, accidental delivery of sedatives. IMT to be established as appropriate to scale of stranding and complexity of rescue effort. Wet suits must be worn by all staff and volunteers operating in the water. Hats and sun screen to be worn. Drinking water to be available. Spare warm dry clothing. Warm blankets available. All volunteers to be identified with a hi-vis arm bands. All active volunteers and staff to be supervised by a team leader. First Aid Kit available on site. A Safety Officer to be appointed when judged necessary by the Incident Manager All volunteers and staff to be briefed on safety and rescue techniques before participating in the rescue operations. Stranding site to be cordoned off to prevent unnecessary people movement. No person to enter the stranding site without being inducted/briefed or receiving permission from the Incident Manager. Children under 16 years not permitted in the water with large animals. Staff and volunteers to operate no more than 30 minutes at a time in water, or as specified by the Safety Officer or Incident Manager. No staff or volunteers to exceed a span of operating hours of 16 hours unless authorised by the Incident Manager. Autopsy only to be performed by trained personnel.
