Look for hazards which you could reasonably expect to result in significant harm and HOW might they cause harm? Who are the people who may be harmed by the Hazard Think of groups of people and individuals who may be affected e.g. Students The Public Participants Volunteers Spectators Cleaners Maintenance staff What are you already doing to CONTROL the Risk? What precautions have you already taken against the Hazards you have listed? e.g. have you given adequate information, guidance, training and instruction? Are there adequate procedures in place? Do the Controls reduce risk as far as reasonably practicable? What FURTHER ACTIONS are required to Control the Risk? What more can be reasonably done for those Risks which are not already adequately controlled? Apply the following principles, in order: 1.Remove the risk completely 2.Choose a less risky option 3.Prevent access to hazard 4.Limit exposure to the hazard 5.Issue protective clothing or equipment 6.Provide welfare facilities e.g. first aid by WHOM? 2 What are the HAZARDS? Who are the people at RISK? What are you already doing to CONTROL the Risk? Muscle injuries Thorough 15 minute warm up and cool down including stretching What FURTHER ACTIONS are required to Control the Risk? by WHOM? by WHEN? Completion DATE? Dehydration Regular breaks for drinking are given and boxers can break for water whenever necessary Trip hazards, coaches Floor is roughly inspected prior to session, any issues with facility are reported, in the mean time, boxers Injuries occurring as a result of incorrect attire Injuries occurring as a result of being punched are told to avoid affected area. Firm ban on all jewellery and glasses, if noticed by a coach, boxer will be requested to remove it or leave the session. will train many sessions before doing contact to ensure proper technique, sparring exercises are conducted at very low intensity, a boxer hitting hard enough as to cause injury will be warned, and removed if he does not act on warning. Mouthguard must be worn, headguard must be worn, gloves must not be worn out for contact. Coaches know to recognise when someone is hitting too hard. have their equipment checked by a coach regularly, mouthguard is checked for fit,
3 Loss of consciousness as a result of contact Friction injuries from ropes Unforeseeable injuries resulting from lack of ring maintenance Injuries resulting from club equipment being in disrepair using ring using ring headguard is checked for fit, gloves are checked for wear in foam, groin guard is checked for fit and protection, footwear checked for wear and fit. As above, sparring exercises are carried out at very low intensity as to provide an opportunity to learn without excessive pain, however this is still a risk due to unforeseen factors such as a boxer moving onto a punch. As such, there will always be two appointed first aiders with relevant training, and sparring exercises should be carried out on soft matting so a fall would not cause further damage. know what to do if they partner loses consciousness. are already not permitted to spar shirtless, which minimises this risk. Ring is inspected before use every time as it is assembled, ropes and tensioners are checked, mats taped together to reduce risk of trips. Bags are inspected regularly for wear and for stability of fixings, flooring inspected regularly, skipping ropes are replaced when damaged. Medicine balls are checked for leaks. When the money is available, rope covers will be purchased. When the money is available, a purpose built floor will be purchased.
4 Medical emergency occurring as a result of pre-existing condition Boxer When a boxer first attends a session, they are asked if they have any condition or injury at all, even if they think it is irrelevant, a note is taken if necessary, and in the case of a joint or muscle injury, that boxer will be given individual exercises to perform that will take into account their injury. A fully stocked first aid kit is present in both training locations. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE CONTROL MEASURES LISTED AND THE INFORMATION WITHIN THIS RISK ASSESSMENT MUST BE GIVEN TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO NEED TO KNOW IT. (This is generally those leading/undertaking/involved in the activity/event). (This is best done by writing up the Control Measures in an easy to read summary, such as a Rules or Guidelines format OR this actual Risk Assessment may be given out in full if that is considered the most informative way).
