2 ACTIVITY: Use of Indoor Rower for Physical Education (Page 2 of 5) HAZARDS At Risk TYPICAL CONTROL MEASURES or X Physical Injury (specific to rowing) Persons rowing Race floor marshals Commentators Is the fan resistance set to correct resistance? (Setting 1 in most cases) The age group is appropriate for the planned exercise (e.g. age, strength and ability of pupils) Pre event assessment High,, There is sufficient space relative to the number of pupils present Pupils not rowing are advised not to get too close to the handle during relay-race changeovers All cables attached to the rowing machine are secured so that they do not present as a snag or tripping hazard The rowing machines are prevented from slipping Long hair is tied back and is away from the monorail and chain when in motion High Pupils are wearing appropriate clothing/footwear for the planned activity Loose tops are tucked in so they do not get caught in the monorail All jewellery is removed before the planned exercise A suitable warm up precedes each activity to minimise risk of injury Pupils receive advice on safe indoor-rowing technique
3 ACTIVITY: Use of Indoor Rower for Physical Education (Page 3 of 5) HAZARDS At Risk TYPICAL CONTROL MEASURES or X High,, Lack of supervision Poor storage Manual handling activities by persons not trained to perform said task Lack of first aid provision participants Organisers Visitors All persons asked to move equipment Pupils advised to be careful moving around the machines and not to trip on the monorail Adequate supervision (suitable teacher to pupil ratio), taking into consideration pupils ability, behaviour, age, etc.) Storage space is sufficient in space, clean and tidy Means of preventing unauthorised access to storage area/s Awareness of the correct assembly, disassembly, and storage of the two parts of the machine ren been instructed how to handle equipment safely according to their age and strength Supervison whilst handling equipment, where necessary x x Storage areas in restricted and supervised area Persons asked to perform task will be instructed by trained Concept 2 staff Pupils asked to handle equipment will only do so after instruction, and under supervision of trained Concept2 staff Adequate first aid facilities readily available (Trained first aiders, first aid kits etc.) Unauthorised use of equipment Poor maintenance of apparatus/ equipment Visitors Young children Managed use of race machines Managed use of warm up machines of all equipment on setup Regular visual inspections of apparatus/equipment carried out during use
