2 CODES AND STANDARDS UNIVERSAL BUILDING CODE AND INTERNATIONAL BUILDING CODE PROVIDE GUIDELINES FOR BUILDING THEATRES, AND SOME OF THE EQUIPMENT, BUT DO NOT INDICATED A CODE FOR ONGOING MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION SOME LOCAL JURISDICTIONS INTERPRET CODES DIFFERENTLY REGARDING STAGE EQUIPMENT FLAME RETARDANT CURTAINS OSHA SAFETY REGULATIONS AND FALL PROTECTION MISC PLAZA / ANSI STANDARD

3 PLAZA (ESTA) AND ANSI STANDARDS ANSI E Entertainment Technology - Powered Hoist Systems, which states Systems shall be inspected annually, or on a more frequent schedule, as determined by a qualified person ANSI E Entertainment Technology - Manual Counterweight Rigging Systems, which states Systems shall be inspected annually, or on a more frequent schedule, as determined by a qualified person, per the manufacturer s recommendation and local code requirements. PLASA s Rigging Working Group is in the process of developing a new standard that will have the alphanumeric of E1.47 and the title Recommended Guidelines for Entertainment Rigging System Inspections

4 COMPETENT VS. QUALIFIED PERSON 29 CFR (f) states: "Competent person" means on who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroun- dings or working conditons, which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dang- erous to employees, and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them. 29 CFR (l) states: "Qualified" means one who, by possession of a recognized degree, certificate, or profess- ional standing, or who by extensive knowledge, training and experience, has successfully demonstrated his ability to solve or resolve problems relating to the subject matter, the work, or the project. These definitions provide that a competent person must have authority to take prompt measures to eliminate hazards at the work site and have the experience to be capable of identifying these hazards. This is the reason a competent person is required under inspection requirements in 29 CFR and 29 CFR The definitions provide that a qualified person must have a recognized degree, certificate, etc., or extensive experience and ability to solve the subject problems, at the worksite. This is the reason why 29 CFR (f) requires that supporting systems design shall be by a qualified person. There may be a requirement for more technical or engineering knowledge here.

17 CURTAINS COTTON Memorable and Princess Cotton velour is treated with a chemical to make it flame retardant. The curtains are considered flame retardant for the life of the fabric depending on environmental conditions. These curtains can be cleaned only with a dry cleaning process. (can be professional dry cleaned up to 10 times) High humidity conditions, and dusty conditions will shorten the life of the curtains and effect the flame retardant If the curtains are cleaned improperly or exposed to extreme environmental conditions or high humidity, they may need to be treated again to be considered flame retardant. Generally cotton velour has a deeper nap and a richer look SYNTHETIC (IFR) Synthetic velour is inherently flame retardant, and does not require additional treatments as long as the curtains are kept clean. These curtains can be cleaned with a water based cleaning solution if needed. Generally synthetic velour does not have as deep a nap, and can appear to have a shine depending on the direction of the nap.
