Dragon Raiders have the overall responsibility for ensuring the risk assessment is suitable and sufficient for the tasks required and to be undertaken. Due to the nature of the activity some risks and hazards are unavoidable in certain circumstances which are classified as valent non fit injura-risk willingly taken by the participants. All participants are required to fill out the pre start documentation/attend the safety induction and are to sign Assessment X2 Snowdon Challenge_V1.0_March 2016.docx
2 Assessment Dragon Raiders BGSA X2 Snowdonia Challenge Residual s 1. Adverse weather conditions Increase in potential slips/trips and falls from boggy ground, high winds Overflowing Streams Dynamic Assessment to be carried out prior to departure. Sufficient instructor s ratios. Foul weather clothing carried. Instructors to carry out kit inspection prior to departure SOW Page 1 Check weather forecast. Weather safety briefing given Potential for hypothermia and heat exhaustion 5 person group shelter carried by each instructor. Blizzard bag carried. Blizzard Jacket carried. Alternate escape routes planed with details on route cards. All instructors first aid trained Hypothermia Heat exhaustion Instructors familiar with signs/symptoms and treatment of hypothermia/heat exhaustion Instructors to ensure correct clothing layers throughout course Immediate action as required Sun hats and sun block carried if hot weather expected. Water bottles to be carried by each course member Access to adequate water. First need purifier to be carried by Lead Instructor to replenish safe water 2. Terrain: Slips and trips leading to serious injury or death Possibility of injury due to slips stumbles or falls in ascent/descent. of injury due to stone fall, either natural or caused by course members or others Training in walking skills and briefing on crossing terrain as required. Correct route selection appropriate to individual level of ability and experience Correct footwear worn. Each instructor to carry rope for confidence/safety on steep ground. Instructors to be trained in mountain first aid. First aid packs to be carried, fit for purpose and in date. Recce to be carried out to determine mobile phone signal In advent of injury requiring medivac by helicopter Instructors First Aid training to be appropriate and up to date CPD to be encouraged Instructors familiar with contents of Helicopter landing drills On going Instructors to remain current in helicopter safety drills Assessment X2 Snowdon Challenge_V1.0_March 2016.docx
3 Assessment Dragon Raiders BGSA X2 Snowdonia Challenge Residual s 3. Streams, rivers and water hazards Slips on rocks. Immersion in water. Being swept away. Potential drowning. Wet personal clothing and kit Avoid crossing rivers until RV with Active Cymru at Afon Ddu. Active Cymru Assessment (If river crossing unavoidable ML procedures to be used with rope safety.) When necessary to cross stream, walk bank to find safe point of crossing. Ensure all personal clothing and kit is secured within dry bag within rucksack. Instructors to assist course members across stream. Ropes to be used if necessary Accidental immersion in water Instructors to be trained in White Water Rescue Training to be kept up to date 4. Overnight wild camp/bivi Effects of adverse weather. Wondering off and getting lost Sufficient adverse weather clothing and kit to be carried by each individual course member. Clothing and kit inspection prior to departure SOW Page 1 Safety brief given on arrival at quarry site. Lesson Plans Shelters Bashers to be correctly set up and individually checked as safe by instructors. Roll mats to be used to insulate from ground. Sleeping bags to be placed inside bivi bags rolled up and stored under bashers to keep sleeping system dry. Group shelter to be set up if required. Instructors to monitor course members and take appropriate action. Instructors to monitor fires and ensure all course members have regular hot drinks and eat rations provided. Head torches to be used and individual course members to carry whistle at all times. Course members to be briefed on emergency signalling Sudden un forecast extreme weather In the case of extreme weather Mountain shelters to be used and set up in the lee of the quarry building. Instructors to monitor individual course members and take appropriate action. Instructors to use emergency stoves to provide hot drinks. Emergency rations to be eaten. 4 Assessment Dragon Raiders BGSA X2 Snowdonia Challenge Residual s 5. Health and personal hygiene Cross infection from poor personal hygiene. Food poisoning. Zoonotic diseases. (Lyme disease, Leptospirosis) Drinking contaminated water Instructors to brief course members on safe personal hygiene. Correct latrine procedures to be adhered to. Excrement to be buried away from camp 6 inches deep and paper to be burnt. Anti-bacterial gel to be used. Instructors to prepare fish away from main camp using correct HACCP measures. Lead Instructor to maintain Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety training. Instructors to give safety brief to course members regarding Lyme disease and Leptospirosis (Wile s disease) Instructors to brief course members on safe water strategies Lesson Plans Water Contracting Lyme disease or leptospirosis after course dispersal Individual course members to be made aware of signs and symptoms of Lyme disease Course members advised to contact GP if symptoms occur. 6. Injury from poor knife skills. Possible cuts or stick injury from misusing knives All knives to be well maintained, clean and sharp. Knives to be packed at the bottom of rucksacks by PG as required by UK Law. All instructors to be trained up in safe knife skills by RM Lead Instructor NCFE Level Illegal use of knives by course members after course dispersal RM to deliver UK knife law session around fire during overnight camp. Appendix B Check course members understand UK knife law before dispersal. All course members to be given safety brief and safe cutting techniques session prior to knife use Lesson Plans Safe cutting All instructors to hold current First Aid qualification All instructors First Aid kits to be fit for purpose and in date. Unmanaged fire and damage to environment livestock, property, and person.. of direct burns from fire. of contact burns from handling metal mess tins and metal mugs. of scolds from boiling water or steam Instructors to give clear fire safety brief Lesson Plans Fire Instructors to supervise their team s fires. Instructor to show all participants the safe use and correct techniques when starting and managing fires outdoors. Participants to be observed by instructors at all times whilst carrying fire skills and duties. Fires are only to be set on appropriately positioned flat stones during the activity as to prevent fire spreading Fire spreading underground after course has left the overnight camp. Instructors to ensure and supervise the thorough extinguishing of all fires and to leave no trace. Monitored by instructors. One 20 Litre dry bag for water collection on site to be used to control and extinguish fire s. Instructors to hold current First Aid qualification and training and to remain in date.
