Two of our group were driving up from Fremont, Caroline and Greg, while Stu was flying out the next day to join us. After an uneventful flight, and as we waited for our luggage to arrive, we noticed that the columns supporting the ceiling were surrounded by old forms of lost luggage. Old golf club bags, suitcases and musical instrument cases went up 30 feet. Very interesting touch! We boarded the bus and took off down the mountains through the very winding roads to South Lake Tahoe. After a brief stop for food and booze at a local grocery store we drove on in to town. Vail resorts kindly had Michele stop by at our wine and cheese party to answer any questions and discuss activities available around the Lake Tahoe area. Michele offered to conduct a mountain tour the next morning all around the Heavenly Resort. Most of the group took her up on her offer and at around 9:30ish, we took the gondola up the mountain to Tamarac area. From there we whooshed around all over the various groomed runs such as Comet and Dipper. Though the snow was in good shape, there had not been much show fall prior to two weeks ago when they experienced two feet. Friday was around 48 degrees up and around the mountain, so though we could not ski the bowls or black runs, the view of the lake was fantastic. Everyone stopped and took pictures and the mountain photographers kindly took some pics of our group with Lake Tahoe in the background. That night a few of the European contingent went out to dinner with some old members of Ibex, Cliff and Loretta Lowe. As Loretta was busy giving ski lessons all day and Cliff was working we would be unable to ski with our local Ibex friends. So they offered to take our group in two of their cars over to a very nice Italian restaurant that Friday night. Saturday was the bus trip to the North Star Resort. Here Jean Bagel offered ski lessons to Sarah, Jane and Caroline, while Ed Fee shadowed as a ski instructor trainee. Sarah took the opportunity to conduct a little shopping and found a nice North Star hat she was proudly wearing most of the afternoon. Après Ski was at the Chocolate Bar. Famous for their martini s and various chocolate desserts. After four or five drinks it was time to take the bus back to South Lake Tahoe.
Page 2 Tahoe Recap (cont d) On Sunday it was back to Heavenly early in the morning. While Bill West and I were screaming around the blue groomers, some of the others were exploring other parts of the mountain. Still pretty warm out, which made for great views of the Lake. That night we held our group dinner at a local Brewery and after a few too many martinis, your author teetered off back to the hotel led by his wife. The rest of the group headed out for the casinos; Cabo Wabo and the Hard Rock. Monday was our Bus to Kirkwood for the day. Some idiot spread a rumor that Kirkwood didn t have good snow. I like that person, because we had Kirkwood almost to ourselves all morning! Hardly anyone was on the mountain! The first thing was saw was an actual black run that extended from the base all the way up to the top. I was jonesing for a steep, fast run and this was it! Half the group wanted to take it easier and choose a blue run, while the rest of us immediately took the lift up to the peak before it got skied off. As usual it was warm and sunny out. So at the top our little black run, the group stopped to take pictures of each other and the mountain view before we jumped down the steep trail. There is where we had a little incident. While, myself, Russell, Peter, George, Greg and others were milling about taking pictures and tightening up our boots; a ski instructor and her student also came up the lift and stopped to take in the view. As we were getting ready to jump down the run, the instructor yelled out, Anyone lose anything? Since no one thought so, we just kept on doing our thing. Then she exclaimed, Anyone lose a wallet? Well that stopped everyone dead in their tracks. Now there were fifteen to twenty people all patting down their ski jackets and ski pants looking for their wallets! Peter then said, Um, I think I lost mine She asked What is your name? Peter he said sheepishly. I guess I shouldn t put my camera in the same pocket as my wallet! he added. Disaster was averted by the keen eyes of a North Star ski instructor! Later for lunch six of us eat outside while basking in the sunlight. Jane, Russell, Caroline and Greg met up with friends and reminisced. At the end of the day we had various Martini s and beers. I ordered what I thought sounded like a delicious Martini, but was unfortunate quite nasty tasting. Fortunately, the waiter asked what I thought of the new recipe and when I told him I didn t care for it, he quickly brought over a better concoction. Then as the bartender was in the mood to experiment, he brought over still another recipe! Now quite liquored up between multiple beers and martinis, our group had to go out and catch our bus back to our hotel. From our vantage point, we could see the bus parked a half mile down the road. Being the ever diligent trip leader, and quite bombed by this point, I offered to walk down to the bus and have him drive back over to our group. Between Paula s Margarita s, Jeff s Beers and various nuts and snack items our trip back to South Lake Tahoe was a very nice ride. George was able to show off his artistic side by taking sun set pictures out our bus windows that looked like modern art. Though, at that point, most of us were just saying ooh and ahh at every picture. Critical review may show that those pictures might not be the masterpieces we thought they were on the bus Tuesday was our last day skiing. We got up early and shot out to get in as many runs as possible before the mass crowds showed up and slowed down the lift lines. It was another perfect day, sunny and in the upper 40 s. That night was New Year s Eve and preparations were being set up for the night s festivities. Some of us had dinner at Jane & Russell s Room where Greg was cooking up his masterpiece. Who knew he was such a chef?! Others went down to take advantage of the wine and cheese party. We all met up just behind the hotel and the Heavenly village where they had set up a stage. Here they had a great upbeat band, ice sculptures and a really lame community college dance act. Or maybe they were local out of work strippers? We never did find out how they got into the show
Page 3 Tahoe Recap (cont d) 9:00pm was midnight Eastern Time, and that when the resort did their New Year s celebration. They placed a bunch of bright rotating lights into one of the gondolas and counted down while they slowly brought it down the mountain. Then they fired off twenty minutes of fireworks and finished off with the band singing some rock favorites like Journey s Don t Stop Believing and Bon Jove s Livin on a Prayer The group then went over to the Hard Rock for some more food and drink. There they had some live entertainment. At midnight, most of us went outside to see if there would be anymore fireworks. The village had closed off the main street by all the casinos and resort village. Thousands of people were all outside counting down to midnight. Counting down to nothing, as nothing actually happened, so we all just kissed and hugged and started walking back to our hotel. That s when we noticed all the riot police and heavy duty crowd control gear spread out and located by all the side streets. The Heavenly Resort Village is in between the casinos and our hotel. When we attempted to walk through it to get home, we were stopped by guards everywhere. We had to walk way around the town in order to get back to our hotel. Guess they were worried about gangs of snow boarders?? Someone was sure scared, don t know why. The next day, our bus tried to pick us up in front of our hotel, but some idiot had parked in a no parking area and was blocking the bus. So after discussing if we should break the window and move it, we relented and brought all our luggage up the street to where the bus could park. During our sunny 50 degree days, we heard about the snowy, cold weather Chicago was experiencing. Didn t think much about it, except when we showed up at around 9:00pm New Year s Day. Our first hint that there would be trouble was when I called my cab company to discover when they could pick us up. I was told, Sorry, we should have never given you a confirmation number, we don t have anyone available After much screaming and yelling I hung up. I just figured I could just call another cab company. I was wrong. Two other taxi companies said forgetaboutit. Finally, I called a great friend who picked us up at the airport. Good thing! We saw massive lines outside the cab stand, and those cab drivers didn t like the look of our ski luggage! Many of our group had a very, very long wait in finding a cab that would one, go to the suburbs, and two, transport all the extra ski luggage! Adolf and Christine had to squeeze their luggage and skies into a Prius! Adolf was worried a piece of their belongings was going to fall out into the street before they could make it back home. In summary, New Years in Lake Tahoe was a great time, with great scenic views with great people! Thanks, Ed Fee

Page 5 Interlaken, Switzerland Ski Trip with Lisbon, Portugal Extension Sunday 2/16 planned ski day. Ski area Wengen (may change based upon information provided by Outdoor Representatives during the Welcome Reception) which boasts a charming traditional traffic-free Alpine village, a must-do for skiers and non-skiers alike, complete with stunning views and extensive intermediate terrain. This is a good place to get your your ski legs back or perhaps take a lesson as Wengen has beginner slopes in heart of village. Given the charm of the village, the friendliness of the locals and the drama of the scenery, it's easy to see why people love Wengen. The new station of the Männlichen cable car has been built in the heart of the village; the Männlichen area was an Ibex favorite on the previous trip to Interlaken. Sunday will be our 2 nd included Dinner 7 pm - Ristorante Mercato (Italian) or your preference. Monday 2/17 planned ski day. Ski area - Mürren (may change based upon information provided by Outdoor Representatives during the Welcome Reception). Mürren is a charming village and tends to be a favorite where you can enjoy tremendous views from Mürren across the deep valley to the rock faces and glaciers of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau: simply breathtaking. And then there's the Schilthorn run, which draws folks back like a magnet. Just follow the Flying Tomato a.k.a. Ed Fee down the Schilthorn (that s what I plan to do!) and pose for awesome pix at the top of the run. Monday dinner is the optional sledging Night Sledding with Cheese Fondue with 26 participants; pick up at the hotel at 6:15 pm. Dinner on your own for those not participating in the sledging. Tuesday, 2/18 planned ski day. Kleine Scheidegg Ski Area (may change based upon information provided by Outdoor representatives during the Welcome Reception). This superb ski area is situated between Wengen & Grindelwald and is reached by the frequent sports trains from the two villages in 25 minutes. Once up at Kleine Scheidegg you will find a number of restaurants and snow bars dotted all over the slopes. A number of ski runs fan out in different directions from Kleine Scheidegg, well suited to the beginner or intermediate skier, or you can take the four seater express chair lift up to the Lauberhorn at 2,472m from where there is an exciting choice of runs back down to Kleine Scheidegg or you can take the alternative run down to Wixi where a chair lift will bring you back up to the Lauberhorn. wurst at one of the snow bars (just follow your trip leader to check out the snow bars!).
Page 6 Interlaken, Switzerland Ski Trip with Lisbon, Portugal Extension A 5km run from Kleine Scheidegg brings you down to the restaurant at Brandegg (where the apple fritters are not to be missed!). This is a pleasant, easy run ideal for beginners. From here the ski run continues on down to Grund for the train back to Scheidegg or the gondolas up to the Männlichen (or you can return to Grindelwald if it's the end of the day). From Kleine Scheidegg you can ski back to Wengen, usually with a 'pit stop' en-route at Mary's Cafe or Allmend. Tuesday will be our 3 rd included dinner your preference of hotel retaurants. Wednesday, 2/19 planned side trip to Berne. We will have a leisurely breakfast at our hotel (read not at the BCOD) and depart 9 am and spend the day in Bern siteseeing, have dinner as a group then depart 7:30 pm for our hotel. Berne is how everyone pictures charming Switzerland in their mind. Berne is the capital of Switzerland, a diverse and beautiful city! Berne is a medieval city founded in 1191, on and around the River Aare. Berne has quite a few attractions and historic sites, as well as an active cultural life. It is here that Albert Einstein worked, the Toblerone chocolate bar is made, and Emmental cheese, known as Swiss Cheese, reached out to the world. With its stately sandstone buildings, historical towers and 11 magnificent fountains, Berne is one the most impressive examples of medieval town architecture in Europe. Over the centuries, the townscape has been preserved virtually intact, and in 1983 the UNESCO inscribed Berne as a World Heritage Site. The noble dome of the House of Parliament presides above the city, just a few steps from the main station, and also from the Aare River, the Prison Tower and all the other places of interest in Berne. On most days, the doors of the House of Parliament are open to the public with visitors permitted to watch the live proceedings of the parliament. The city of Berne was built with local sandstone in Gothic style with gables, bay windows, and more arcades than any of the city in Europe. Berne claims Switzerland's highest Gothic cathedral, the Münster-Cathedral, and the Heiliggeist-Kirche, a prime example of 18th century Protestant church architecture. Throughout the city are towers, arcades, and lots of old fountains. The Münster-Terrasse, a square in front of the Cathedral, has been a famous meeting place over the centuries. The fantastic Clock Tower has puppets that pop out before the hour and perform a little skit. The Center Paul Klee exhibits the largest collection in the world of one of the greatest 20th century artists. The Swiss Alpine Museum displays a history of the Swiss Alps. Einstein House The physicist Albert Einstein retained close ties with Berne throughout his life ( ). In 1977 the Albert Einstein Society was able to rent Einstein's former flat on the second floor of Kramgasse 49, restore the original furnishings, and to open the site to the public as a tribute to the scientific achievements of this great scientist. Museum of Fine Arts Berne The Collection of the Berne Museum of Fine Arts is one of the most distinguished in Switzerland. It contains outstanding works spanning eight centuries and includes a total of 3'000 paintings and sculptures as well as approximately 55'000 drawings, prints, photographs, videos and films. Thursday 2/20 planned ski day - Jungfraujoch Top of Europe (may change based upon information provided by Outdoor representatives during the Welcome Reception). Jungfraujoch is beautiful with the majestic Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau summits, together with close-up views of the longest glacial flow. The Jungfrau railway travels from the heart of the mountains to Europe s highest lying mountain station at 3454 meter altitude. This is only a possibility if weather is good.
Page 7 Interlaken, Switzerland Ski Trip with Lisbon, Portugal Extension From Kliene Scheidegg, the cog-wheel railway travels year-round through the tunnel and over the steep climb up to the Jungfraujoch. Two stops in the tunnel permit spectacular views of the Eiger north wall and surrounding glacier world. * Standing amidst the snow-capped mountain world, views extend from the Aletsch Glacier to the Jungfrau - and a 45-minute snow hike through the thin air direction Mönchsjoch is pefectly feasible form here. * Additional wothwhile sights include the ice scupltures on the inside of the glacier, adventurous "Sphinx" round tour, as well as the ultra-scenic "Top of Europe" glacier restaurant. hoose to upgrade your ski pass to include the Jungraujoch or buy a 1-day pass for this option.. Dinner on your own. Friday 2/21 on your own. Take advantage of your favorite ski area or elect to investigate a possible side trip to Thun which is one of the most original towns in Switzerland. It occupies an admirable site within view of the Bernese Alps. With its picturesque castle and quaint medieval center Thun (pronounced toon) is well worth a visit; there is a walking path along the lake. Thun is also known as a pottery making center for centuries - some of the finest pieces come from the period between 1880 and Thuner Majolika is a very distincive slip-decorated earthenware, often using bright colors against a rich deep brown background. Popular motifs include alpine scenes, edelweiss and the so called "Chrutmuster" sometimes described as the owl and sometimes as the peacock's eyel pattern (see vase Beautiful views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and, closer at hand, the giant pyramidal Niesen (2362m) and flat-topped Stockhorn (2190m) are a gentle prelude to the Alpine vistas further south. For those that plan to ski suggesting the Männlichen Ski Area. This popular ski area is set at 2,230m and is reached by a cable car in just a few minutes from the centre of Wengen. Wide open slopes above the tree line with a choice of either easy runs or some steeper slopes with moguls. From the bottom of these runs two fast chair lifts bring you back up to the Männlichen or you can continue on the 8km run all the way down to Grindelwald Grund. From the Männlichen a series of exhilarating runs and chair lifts bring you across to the Kleine Scheidegg ski area. Friday will be our 4 th included dinner Farewell 7 pm at the Chalet Restaurant. Saturday 2/22 depart for Chicago or Lisbon! Lisbon planning in process! Pam Chiechi Trip Leader
