1 Tips N Tales The voice of the WEST JERSEY SKI CLUB Volume 51 Number 2 November/December 2016 Hi, everyone. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE We re getting closer to winter, colder weather, the holidays and ski season. The anticipation is great this time of year with visions of snow all over the place, or at least all over the Poconos, New England and out west. Some snow around here is fun but it can get old really fast, just enough to build interest without a lot of shoveling would fit the bill. Waiting for those early indicators of winter does drive some of us nuts though. It s hard to get excited about plunking down money when there is uncertainty about what s ahead of us when the season gets into full swing. This tendency is human nature and the bane of trip leaders and ski club officers. At times I wonder how southern ski clubs manage, but they do. Around here, I believe our thoughts are modeled after what we see when we look out our window; no snow, no skiing, no sense signing up. Then, in January, when the snow starts to fall, the phone rings with people wanting to go on the trip. Sadly, the trip was canceled because of a lack of participants by certain deadlines in compliance with cancellation policies. We all want to go on successful and rewarding trips. What s your vision of a successful and rewarding trip? For some, it s got to be a western trip, or at least a New England trip; it s got to be a mid-week trip, a destination with no big crowds and lift lines. We all seem to want to ski with people we know, whether we are skiing single, with a spouse or S.O., it s great to have others to mix-it-up with and then there is always the après ski gatherings. In my mind, my thoughts for any successful trip wander back to some of the best memories of past trips. Sitting on a deck with friends after a day on the slopes with a cold beverage, talking about the runs that were great, the trails that could have been better and the fact that even the worst day was better than a good day at work are great memories. After a day on the slopes, getting back to a lodge with a fire waiting or settling onto the bus for the trip home are always good end to the day. And then there s the snow? We would all like perfect pristine snow; not too much of it, not too heavy, no ice underneath, temperature not too hot, not too cold forget it, it s too unpredictable! I prefer to focus on the things that we can control and the things that I will remember longer than anything other than perhaps one day of truly outstanding, perfect snow conditions. My message is simple. We have scheduled trips to accommodate a variety of interests but they aren t going to necessarily meet every expectation for conditions that Mother Nature can throw at us; they are not all out west or mid-week. Our trip schedule is set up to accommodate a variety of skiing interests and a variety times that a diverse club needs. While not all of our trips are a perfect skiing fit, keep in mind some of those best memories from past trips; there are still a lot more to be made. Come join us! Best wishes to everyone for a great season! Rick Guenther, President From the Trip Chairperson All ski trips are doing well. Please come out to our ski meeting and sign up for our trips. The more people sign up the less the price of the trip! All areas have received some snow fall already! The ski season is looking promising! Vail is doing well. We have 27 people signed up. I need one single male to round out our current group. I could probably take two more people, as long as they are willing to room together! But I need to know asap. Thanks. This trip will provide the opportunity for families to celebrate a season of family skiing; or simply to spend quality time with children and grandchildren on a day's trip to a mountain that is not overcrowded on weekends and has a very laid back environment for families to enjoy. It offers a nice mix of terrain for skiing families, an inexpensively priced option for people of any age to give skiing a first try or a three hour tubing option for the committed non-skier. Family members are welcome to ride along on the bus, relax in the lodge surrounded by the beautiful Catskill Mountains and watch family members have great time. At the end of the day, we can all enjoy a toast or two, dress the littlest ones in PJ's, get on the bus for the ride home, and contemplate the great day of skiing that we all will enjoyed while interacting in a way that doesn't come along often. It's not cheap skiing isn't and we don't do it to save money plus it s a Saturday - things always cost more on the weekend! Kids can get cranky! But, they will have memories that will last a lifetime. We re going back to Jay Peak Finally!!! It will be my second visit to Jay after a couple decades and I am excited to get back and ski the mountain and see the changes they ve made. The skiing has always been great with 50 miles of trails including many glades, multiple lifts (mostly quads) as well as a 60 passenger gondola (Vermont s only aerial tram). The old Hotel Jay has been replaced with three new modern hotels including the Stateside which we will call home for four nights. This is ski in/ ski out lodging at its best. Our destination also includes a variety of restaurants, pubs, specialty shops and a General Store all easily accessed with their complimentary shuttle that services the two base areas. Just $ pp (double occupancy) will get you four days of ski in/ski out fun at the Stateside Lodge with breakfast included, roundtrip transportation expenses including driver s tip from the Burlington Twp. Walmart, snacks, beverages and a box JAY PEAK, VT MARCH (SUN. THURS) $806* Includes: the bus ride, lift ticket, continental breakfast on the way up, light dinner on the way home (you won t be hungry afterward)! Trip Leader Nancy Guenther ngpeteach@netscape.net lunch/dinner both coming and going. We are leaving Sunday, March 19th and returning Thursday, March 23rd. Whether you are returning or going for the first time, it will be a great trip. I look forward to you being a part of it.

FROM -"A Snowglider's Dictionary" Contributed by Kris Seriously How to Prepare for Ski Season At the Tuesday, Nov. 1 Meeting Oh my aching (Circle one or all that apply): Back; Shoulders; Knees; Body: etc.. As we approach the ski season, we start to focus on getting the skis, clothes and equipment ready for the upcoming season. A couple of our members, Eleanor Dunker, Marvel Carrol and my wife have been turning to Yoga to prepare themselves for the upcoming season and push back against the effects of time and active lifestyles to improve their flexibility, balance and overall well being. Nancy and Eleanor have made arrangements with one of the local instructors to come in for this meeting for a discussion and presentation on the benefits of yoga for all who wish to learn and watch a little bit about what it has to offer. This will be for members of all ages. Our meeting will start at our normal time (7:30 p.m. at O'Connor's American Bar and Grill, on Tuesday, November 8) with the presentation to begin at about 7:45-8:00 PM with time before and after for trip sign-ups and needed payments for trips. Feel free to bring a friend to learn more about our club and the overall well being that can be had through yoga. Feel free to wear comfortable clothes if you wish to try some of the moves. 5 WJSC First Annual Golf Outing Aren t You Sorry You Missed It! West Jersey Ski Club s First Annual Golf Outing was held on Tuesday, September 13, at Indian Springs Golf Club in Marlton. In attendance were Gayle Butler (event host), Jim Wakeling (co-host), Bill Hughes, Nancy Guenther, Milt McFalls, Margo Mattis and Jerry Lydon. It was a beautiful afternoon for a round of golf and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It was a scramble format to expedite play. After the 18 th hole was completed, everyone headed for Gayle s house for a lasagna dinner that included appetizers, salad, bread and cheesecake for dessert. Nancy and Milt had invited their spouses (who are nongolfers) to join us for dinner so Rick and Edith arrived shortly thereafter. During dinner, Gayle distributed prizes: The team with the highest score (Bill, Margo, Jerry and Gayle) each received a deck of cards, suggesting they should consider taking up a different sport!! The low-scoring team of Nancy, Milt and Jim each received a sleeve of golf balls. The longest drive was won by Jim and closest to the pin was won by Bill each of whom received a bottle of white wine. Our hope is that next year we will have more people who are willing to come out and join us!! Ed. Note: Many thanks to Gayle for suggesting, planning, coordinating, cooking and encouraging this event! Bill, Jim, Gayle, Nancy, Milt, Margo, and Jerry Après Golf at Gayle's
