1 Revised Master Plan Update On January 14th, 2009 Kicking Horse Mountain Resort hosted a second public information session at the British Columbia Visitor s Centre in Golden. The goal of the meeting was to present to the public and community stakeholders the revisions made to the Master Plan since late fall 2008, and generally feedback was positive and the revised proposed plan was well received. This meeting was the second and final public information session as the Revised Master Plan project moves forward. The changes that were made were very well received and we feel that we have worked closely with all key community stakeholders on this exciting project. The next step is that we have our consultations with First Nations and then we work through the MDA (Master Development Agreement). Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has followed all of the required steps in the Master Plan amendment process as outlined by the Commercial Alpine Ski Policy of British Columbia. Thanks to everyone for the positive support and we will keep you all posted as we move toward the next chapter in the exciting evolution and growth of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Steve Paccagnan President & General Manager Kicking Horse Mountain Resort New Real Estate Homeowner Referral Program Earn a FREE Season s Pass for the Family! I m pleased to announce that Kicking Horse now has a Homeowner referral program. This program allows us to recognize Homeowners as some of our most valuable ambassadors to the resort. Homeowners that refer friends who close on a new property at Kicking Horse before 2010, will be issued a complimentary family season s pass for one winter. It is important to note that this offer is valid on new project sales only (Cedar Creek Estates, The Aspens and The Cabins). This is a great opportunity for you to spread your enthusiasm and earn some free skiing while you are at it. For more details on the program or if you have any questions contact Michael Dalzell at the Real Estate Discovery Centre. Help your friends discover a fresh adventure today they ll thank you for it! Here s how it works: As a Homeowner, if you have a friend or colleague who is interested in purchasing a home, condo or home site at Kicking Horse please refer him/her to the Discovery Centre. This can either be in the form of a formal introduction, or asking that they visit the D.C. For the referral to be official, as the referring Homeowner you will need to fill out a Homeowner referral form. This form is available at the Discovery Centre and must be completed for the referral incentive to be awarded. We will continue to work with the referral. If the referred lead(s) purchases within 1 year of receiving the referral, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort will award you, as the referring Homeowner, with a complimentary family season pass for 1 ski season. 2 barb & Lava and Kyle & Wiser. Work Like a Dog: Avalanche Safety Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has one of the most sophisticated Avalanche Control programs in North America and has a solid avalanche safety track record that is a benchmark in the industry. However, there is one branch of our Mountain Safety department that is a little lesser known. You may have seen Lava & Wiser at Kicking Horse before. They are part of the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (CARDA), which was founded in 1978, and is an organization dedicated to saving the lives of avalanche victims. Comprised of volunteers who have passed an intensive training program, this organization strives to maintain a network of efficient avalanche search and rescue dog teams in Canada. Kicking Horse is proud to have supported this program since the resort opened in 2000 and there are presently two teams that work out of Kicking Horse: Kyle Hale with his German Sheppard Wiser, and Barb Quinn with her Black Lab Lava. As part of the mountain safety department, these dogs are trained to travel in a mountain environment, as well as find human scent so that they can be of assistance in a mountain emergency involving avalanches. The teams maintain a constant state of readiness and are on call 24 hours, 7 days a week. The CARDA program not only adds value to our own internal program, but it also helps support the regional avalanche response network. Although they are based out of and trained at the resort, they provide services wherever requested, whether it s in a National Park or in the surrounding backcountry. In the past Kicking Horse s teams have responded to up to 20 calls in the surrounding area per season, making them one of the most active civilian teams in Canada. Kyle Hale, a Kicking Horse avalanche forecaster, training mountain guide and the president of CARDA, says that this program holds personal meaning for him. Considering the nature of my job and the size of the community, I m proud to be a part of such an important association and I m thankful for all the support Kicking Horse has provided since day one. In addition to the nature of the program, Kyle points out that working with the dogs is incredibly rewarding in and of itself. Keep an eye out for our four legged staff because they are often out on the mountain training. Please keep in mind that they are working dogs though, so be sure to ask their handler for permission to pet them first. In January 2010, you can expect to see over 30 handler-dog teams out on the mountain as Kicking Horse hosts the CARDA General Certification course. If you are interested in finding out more about this program, you can visit the official CARDA site online at or contact our mountain safety team at mtnsafety@kickinghorseresort.com. 4 Season Update Chris Three months of skiing under our belt here at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and less than two months of ski days remaining. Certainly this winter hasn t been without its hurdles cold weather, average snow, declining economy, just to name a few. But who s dwelling on the negatives? With all of the events here at Kicking Horse, 08/09 will surely be a season to remember and we plan on ending the season just as we came in with a chuckle and a smile! The KHMR team has been focused on making a series of milestones by setting the stage for a run of events that, in time, will take on their own identity, ultimately shaping what is to come in the years before us. It s truly pioneering and breathtaking to see the energy and enthusiasm going into making this winter the best that it can be. We hope to see you on the mountain, sun or snow choose your Fresh Adventure! Mark Dobson Director of Sales and Marketing Staff Spotlight: Chris Wheadon As many of you have noticed, there are a number of Australian and Kiwi staff that work here at Kicking Horse throughout the winter. Whether they re helping you load the gondola, teaching you how to ski the steeps or serving you dinner at the Eagle s Eye, they are a crucial part of our team. I had a chance to sit down with one of our lifties, Chris Wheadon from Matamata, New Zealand, to find out what brought him to Kicking Horse. When asked why he chose Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, he answered simply Because I knew there would be good skiing. His favorite part about being abroad is that it offers something different: there s the challenge of getting to know new people, stepping outside your comfort zone and doing things that you wouldn t normally do. So what does he normally do? Back home, Chris spent his winters working at his local ski hill, Mt. Ruapehu, which is also the local active volcano. Some of you may recognize this mountain as Mt. Mordor from the famous film series Lord of the Rings, though he assures me there is no evil presence there and he has yet to come across a crew of hobbits trying to get rid of a ring. his passion for the outdoors and the fact he can get some good exercise while working. One highlight of his job, which stands out for him, is when his team uncovered a Maori fortification that dated back to the 1850s, when Europeans were beginning to settle there, a significant find with historical importance. This winter isn t the first time Chris has lived away from New Zealand though. Between finishing his degree in archaeology and moving to Canada, he lived in Japan for three years teaching English and getting a taste of their ski culture. Though it s been awhile since he lived there, Chris has been busy teaching himself Japanese and is currently taking a distance university language course. So what s next for Chris? He plans on returning to New Zealand for their winter to work at Mt. Ruapehu, then potentially returning to Canada for another winter, hopefully at Kicking Horse. During the summer, Chris works as an archeologist, which he has a Master s degree in. His love for archaeology stems from enjoying history in general, MOUNTAIN LIVING 4
5 Upcoming Events I hope that everyone has been having a good time out on the mountain! Most importantly I hope you have had the opportunity to get out and experience some of the great events that Kicking Horse has brought to life this winter! Here s just some of this season s highlights: The opening weekend Comedy Festival was well received with a hilarious kick off, followed by a very entertaining dinner theater event. The Gondola Plaza was rocking on New Year s Eve with the torchlight parade, fireworks, and our first ever, night time, big air jam. The January Scotch Festival tantalized some taste buds and we are looking forward to really growing this concept in the near future. Then there was our first Wrangle the Chute event it might have seemed a little off the wall, but I know we are going to have some real fun building this event into something even wilder in the years to come. As we keep skiing and riding through the winter season, you re going to want to mark the following upcoming key events in your calendar: If you still haven t made the time to take your Avalanche Awareness Course, this is the year to do it. Courses run every second week until the end of the season. Don t miss out on another fabulous Brew Master s Dinner on Friday March 20th. This time around Okanagan Springs is taking centre stage along with dinner at the Eagle s Eye Restaurant. Make your reservations with Kicking Horse Central today. Rossignol will be hosting a Girls Day Out Weekend March 21st 22nd. This is a great setting in which to meet some other ladies and get some coaching on how to dominate the slopes at KHMR Dummy Builder Champions The First Annual Dogtooth Dash is happening on March 28th. This is our first ever ski touring race, with the start and finish happening just outside of the award winning Eagle s Eye Restaurant. Make sure you are at the top of the Gondola at 10am on Saturday, March 28th to check out the mass start, and swing up top after the race to check out another great Big Rock Brewery Untapped band perform at Eagle s Eye Restaurant. To finish it all off you don t want to miss the Sun Splash Funk Fest weekend, April 10th 12th. Lots of fun activities happening on the mountain with an amazing line up of funk bands performing at Eagle s Eye Restaurant and the return of the Dummy Downhill. The mountain staff would like to challenge the homeowners to a dummy build off we want to see what kind of creations might be able to beat the mountain staff! As the seasons change we have lots of great things in the works for the summer, kicking it off with the May Long Weekend Street Festival, followed by Show and Shines, Mountain Bike Races, Adventure Races, and a summer dinner concert series happening during July and August. More details are on their way and we ll be sure to keep you posted! Cheers, Ladies rock the slopes! Jordan Petrovics Corporate Alliances, Media Relations & Events Manager Feuz Facts Eduard Feuz (pronounced Fo itz) was a Swiss guide who arrived in Golden, BC in His arrival marked the beginning of the continued tradition of mountain guiding in the Kicking Horse region. The classic Northwest Ridge route on Mt. Sir Donald was first climbed by Eduard Feuz in 1903, and today this climb is ranked amongst North America s top 50. Kicking Horse Mountain Resort s Feuz Bowl is named after this pioneering Swiss guide and to this day reflects the explorer s same spirit of adventure. Feuz Bowl offers some of the most challenging and exciting terrain on the resort as well as providing some of North America s most accessible big mountain in bounds skiing and riding. Today, Feuz remains a legendary name in Kicking Horse country: whether you re referring to one of Canada s historic Swiss guides, or to the epic run you had the other day at the resort.
