2 NC Planica lies in the glacier valley, at an altitude of 950 m, in the NW part of Slovenia, practically on the border with Italy and Austria. The Planica valley lies in the N-S direction. It is blocked from the south with the Julian Alps. Engineer Stanko Bloudek built the first giant jumping hill in 1934, where in 1936 the first man jumped over 100 m on skis. The flying hill constructed by Gorišek brothers, where the first man on the skies flew over 200 m already in 1994 and on which today ski jumpers can safely jump over 250 m. 2

3 Exploitation of Near Surface Geothermal Energy, enabled by the Sava river Not far from Planica, in Zelenci, at an altitude of 850 m, the longest Slovene river Sava originates. But this is actually the second source of the Sava river. The first source is Nadiža at the end of Planica valley, in Tamar valley at an altitude of 1232 m. After approximately 200 m it disappears in sand and as the underground water flows under the Nordic center. 3

4 A decision made by Slovenian government in 2006: to build a modern Nordic center, which will also be a real tourist attraction. The Nordic Centre vas financed by the EU structural funds and opened in December Over 40 million euros were invested in last few years. Today NC Planica has 7 jumping hills (15 to 138 m) for jumping all year round, a 250 m flying hill for the competition, cross-country ski trails and a series of facilities for tourists. Over 250,000 visitors annually in Planica. 4

5 NC Planica - Exploitation of Near Surface Geothermal Energy NC Planica can offer to the visitors: Guided tours in the center, museum, bar and a small souvenir shop. with a new great attraction, the steepest Zipline in the world, everyone can experience how it is to fly along the world s largest jumping hill. 5

6 In winter: over 10 kilometres of cross country skiing tracks, some also covered with man-made snow. And can you imagine? There is the track for cross country skiing, covered with real snow, from April till the end of November in the underground garage. 6

7 For heating and cooling the central building and the underground garage the NSGE is used. The central building in NC Planica is heated in winter, and in summer the underground garage is cooled with reversible HPs. Water is drawn from 2 wells at a depth of 60 m. The groundwater temperature is only 7 C, but it is enough to take advantage of it to heat the building. Water that flows through water HPs loses approx. 3-4 K and is cooled down to 3 or 4 C. In winter they use this cooled water for more efficient production of artificial (man-made) snow with snow making machines. The temperature in the main building and in in the underground garage in winter is 20 to 22 C. During the competitions in ski jumping and cross country skiing the garage area is used as a dining room for VIP guests, PRESS centre for journalists and wardrobe for the athletes. 7

8 After the World cup finale in March the snow is put from the jumping hill to the garage. In the summer in the garage the glycol in pipes in concrete is cooled down to -12 C and the air temperature in the garage is -1 to -2 C. So the snow is preserved all summer and autumn long and used for the underground cross country track. 8

9 For heating the central building 2 HP units with heating power 78.4 kw each are used. and for cooling the underground garage they have 3 HP units with cooling power 31.5 kw each (for cooling the cross country track) and heating power 51.3 kw each for heating (use during competitions for PRESS, VIP and athletes) in winter. The second building - mainly used for the athletes and employees - is heated by 2 HP units with heating power 58.9 kw each. 9

10 NSGE is used for heating and cooling the most important buildings in NC Planica. The temp. of underground water is 7 to 9 C. They are allowed to pump 30 l of water per second. Because of rather cold underground water, the efficiency (COP) of the whole system is 3. They have the largest Nordic centre in the world and they get energy for heating and cooling from HPs mainly by using NSGE. In 2016/2017 with SPF=4.5 the utilized NSGE for heating the central building was: GWh. with SPF=4.3 for heating and SPF=5.4 for cooling the utilized NSGE for the second multipurpose building for heating was GWh and GWh for cooling the snow track. Two other buildings are heated by heat pumps air water. But that is already another story. The garage section is designed for 3 different scenarios: 1. Racing, garage heating; 2. Garages for vehicles without heating; 3. Running track, garage cooling 10
