3 Once again we were so lucky and had great weather for playing on the hill. Some just walked the hill and some, (Jim Adams) demonstrated hill-bounding technique. There were 11 skiers of varying abilities and we followed fun in the sun with lunch at the Lodge right there at the Four Lakes Ski Hill. When there is snow, you can train on your skis there too! Thanks Art! This trail is groomed to perfection and can make a new skier fall in love with the sport and remind the experienced skier why they fell in love with the sport. If you are heading to the UP for the first time this is what you will find. Enjoy the ride!!

4 Trip leader: Ron Ridenour, H: , C: , Location: The trip is about 280 miles and will take about 5 hours with a stop. From Naperville take I-88 west to I-39 and stay on I- 39 all the way to Wausau. Exit Interstate 39 at County Hwy "N" (Exit 188) and travel 3.5 miles west (initially you travel south about ½ mile then turn and travel west 3 miles) to Red Bud Road. Turn south (left) on Red Bud Road and continue 1.25 miles to trailhead area on west (right) side of road. This trip can be a stand alone weekend outing, or part of your travel to the UP for the week of skiing. We will meet at the trailhead building about 1PM to have lunch and form groups for an afternoon of skiing. Bring your lunch, as there are only snacks at the building. If the trip is in jeopardy or if you need to change your plans call me and leave a message if I m not at home. Please make your own hotel reservations. These reservations are for Saturday night only unless you want to stay longer. The hotel where Dria and I ll be staying is the Hampton Inn in Wausau. We have also stayed at the Exel Inn in the past and it is a little less expensive (See the list below). From Nine-mile forest return to Interstate 39 and travel north to exit 192. We are also planning on eating as a group Saturday night at the 2510 Restaurant in town. The restaurant is located at 2510 Stewart Ave. From the hotel go 1 block north to Stewart, turn left (west) on Stewart and travel less than ½ mile to the restaurant. Hope to see you all there! Below is a brief description of the ski area and facilities. Difficulty: Beginner to Expert Length: 20 miles (33 km); loops from.5 mile to 9.6 miles Grooming: Frequently groomed 8' wide skating lane and machine set tracks on all trails. This heavily wooded trail, the best in the Wausau Area, offers a unique blend of forest types and scenic views. The well-groomed trail system has been widened to accommodate skaters and diagonal skiers. Trails have been designed to provide a challenge to skiers of all abilities. There is a trailhead building with indoor facilities and plenty of room for parking. The heated trailhead building provides a changing area, restrooms, a spacious lounging area, hot and cold drinks and ski equipment rentals. Rental services are available only during building hours. (see schedule) Trail fees (for trail grooming and maintenance) are required at Nine-Mile Forest. Season trail passes are available at the trailhead building, Wausau and Marathon County Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department, and at Wausau Area retail ski shops. Daily trail passes are available only at the trailhead building. Building hours at Nine-Mile during the ski season are: Mon.: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Tue.-Fri.: 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sat.: 8 a.m.- 9 p.m.; Sun.: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (Night skiing by lighted trails); Open all holidays. For fee schedule at Nine-Mile Forest call the Wausau and Marathon County Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department at or Nine-Mile Chalet at Think SNOW!!!!!!! This is the most fun skiing for the least amount of money! The UP is known for their snow, and our favorite place to ski, ABR, is known for their impeccable trail grooming. While ABR is just minutes away, there are other options for skiing, including the Wolverine Trails, Porcupine Mountain, and even driving to Minocqua s Winter Park. A lot of variety and a lot of K if you are looking to get some distance in. If you tire of skiing, snowshoeing is also an option. Lake Shore Ski Club - Joint Trip Join Lake Shore Ski Club at the Manoir-Victoria where you will be able to explore this fascinating old city, which will be celebrating its 400th Anniversary. With its myriad of historic sites, wonderful restaurants and cobblestone streets, it will be easy to imagine that you ve somehow ended up in France. Within walking distance of the hotel you will find entertainment, attractions and shopping. And since we will be there during Winter Carnival, there will be day activities, an international ice sculpture competition, night parades, slide runs, sleigh rides and more! The planned trails start with the famed Mont Sainte Anne which is the largest cross country ski area in Canada with 224 km of groomed trail. Other trail systems may include the beautiful La Refuge, Camp Mercier, and Le Massif. Downhill skiing/snowboarding and snowshoeing are also available at some of the destinations. Includes: Air fare, hotel, transportation within Quebec, and Wine/Cheese Party. An additional $30 will be required for membership in the Lake Shore Ski Club. Membership Note: The attached membership is for the season. The membership year starts at the September meeting, but those who joined in the very late Spring are good through next year. Check with Art Kardatzke if you have any questions regarding your membership status. You must be a member in good standing (paid) to participate in day trips or go on any out of town, overnight trip.

7 Nordic Fox Weekend Ski Trips 2014 Here is a tentative schedule for some of our ski trips for this winter season. We are always interested in new areas to ski. If you have a favorite area, please volunteer to be a trip leader. These are people who are willing to help make the transportation arrangements for the group. If you re interested in helping out, see one of us at the meeting, call, or . Ron Ridenour (h) (c) (ronsnimbus3@aol.com). Thanks for your support and your ideas. Any weekend that there is snow will find any number of Nordic Foxes out at Arrowhead Golf Club or the Herrick Lake trails. The park district and other skiers groom these trails if there is adequate snow. Other local ski areas include Camp Sagawau in Lemont, Katherine Legge Park in Hinsdale, Waterfall Glen in Darien, Woodruff Golf Course in Joliet and Rock Cut State Park in Rockford. Come join the fun! NOTE: If no snow we will adjust the schedule to a place where there is snow or go on a hike. See website for updates. January 2014 Saturday 01/04 Lapham Peak, Delafield, WI 8AM till 6PM Cost: $4/day, $20/year WI trail & $10/day, $35/year parking fee per car Trip Leader: Jim Adams, jimmadams@sbcglobal.net Description: Just a 2½ -hour drive north brings you to this beautiful park. Lapham Peak is 25 miles west of Milwaukee and 1 mile south of Interstate 94 near Delafield, on County Highway C. We ll meet at the Evergreen Grove parking lot shelter at 10:30. Please bring a lunch. It is a great day trip with 24K of both skating and classic. When the snow is available, it will be groomed and spectacular! The skiing is for all levels. If there is no snow we will meet for a hike in the Morton Arboretum or a similar local location. This location just off of I-90 is located on the Northeast side of Rockford. The trails are mainly groomed for classic skiing. We will take a hike if there is no snow. Then we ll go for some lunch nearby. This is a beautiful location within 1-2 hours of our area. Saturday & Sunday 01/18 & 19 Nine-Mile Forest, Wausau, WI 8AM Saturday till 6PM Sunday Cost: Hotel and Dinner plus trail fees are $12/day or $20 for a two day pass, snow shoe pass is $5/day Trip Leader: Ron & Dria Ridenour, ronsnimbus3@aol.com Description: This is a great weekend trip to an excellent skiing area! I will coordinate transportation and lodging for anyone who wants to car pool or share a room. The trails are groomed weekly for both classic and freestyle skiing. We ll plan to meet at the ski area at 1PM on Saturday, ski the afternoon and get together Saturday night for a group dinner at the 2510 Restaurant. Those of you who are going on to the UP can leave Sunday morning and those who are going home can ski Sunday then drive an easy 4½ hours home. Sunday thru Friday 01/19-01/24 Upper Peninsula, Ironwood, MI 12PM Sunday till 6PM Friday Cost: Approximately $235/double, $299/single for X-C skiers, includes 5 nights hotel, 5 dinners and trail fees. 8 Saturday 01/25 Nordic Trail, LaGrange, WI 8AM till 5PM Cost: same costs as Lapham Peak trip Trip Leader: Ron Ridenour, Description: This is one of my favorite trips. The South Kettle Moraine State Park is a beautiful ski area just north of Lake Geneva, WI. An easy 2-hour drive puts you on a trail that is groomed for both classic and freestyle skiers. The trail is set weekly. There is both easy and challenging terrain for both beginning and intermediate skiers. We ll plan to ski from 10-12, have lunch in LaGrange (just 2 miles away) and return for skiing from 1-3PM. February 2014 Saturday Herrick Lake, Wheaton, IL 9AM till 1PM Cost: Free Trip Leader: Art Kardatzke, , arkjjk@aol.com Description: We will meet at the west entrance off Herrick Rd (1/2 mile south of Butterfield Rd) at 10AM. We will ski or hike (if no snow) for 1-2 hours then go to Chili s for lunch at Danada Square (2 miles east on Butterfield Rd). Those who want more skiing can return to either Herrick Lake or Arrowhead. Rentals are available at the nearby Arrowhead Golf Club just off Butterfield Rd. Saturday thru Friday 02/08-02/14 Maplelag, Detroit Lakes, MN Cost:TBD Trip Leader: Rosanna Duchon rose65@sbcglobal.net This resort maintains over 64K of ski trails. On Friday is a 10 K race for all persons. On Saturday is a 51K ski race for intermediate and advanced skiers and a 23K Kortelopet for all levels of skier and there is also a shorter 12K race for beginners. Attend for the skiing, or just for the fun and cheer 8000 of your favorite skiers to the finish. We all have fun. In past years more than 15 Nordic Foxes have participated. OK, I fell before and after that, but I m pretty certain that was the fall that did the damage as it caught me unprepared. So, I have a hairline fracture of a little bone in my left wrist and a hairline fracture in my left kneecap. I probably have at least 4 weeks for the cast and longer for the leg brace, but I m hoping after the next round of x-rays they will give me some mobility. Here s hoping the New Year s finds me healed. Also, a great way to introduce friends to the sport as you can rent equipment at Arrowhead. You thought those boots would be great. But ouch, they kill your feet. Those gloves would no doubt be the warmest you had ever bought; but not for you. You lost weight, yea! But now you have clothes that don t fit; like new, but useless to you. Extra skis?
