1 The Snow-Cats - Season Opener St Anton Sunday 16 th 23 rd December 2018 (New) Chalet Rosanna The Snowcats will once again be in St Anton this December for our season opener. We stay at the Chalet Rosanna (20 guest capacity) with Inghams. Please be aware that this is a DIFFERENT Chalet Rosanna to the traditional Mark Warner one we ve used so many times over the years. ST ANTON OVERVIEW A world-class resort set in the Arlberg region of the Tirol, St Anton offers some of the best skiing in the world. The ski bus service links St Anton to Lech, Zürs and Sonnenkopf providing over 270km of runs on just one lift pass. Spread out along the valley floor, the resort is actually a large working town which retains a traditional charisma and a pretty car-free village centre in the beautiful local style with inviting shops lining a pedestrian main street. BRAND NEW 40M LIFT INFRASTRUCTURE Thanks to the construction of 4 brand new lifts by Ski Arlberg, skiers are now able to travel between the St Anton and Lech sides of the Arlberg region. With the resorts of St Anton, St Christoph, Stuben, Zurs, Lech, Schrocken and Warth linked, the ski area now totals an impressive 304 km, making it Austria s largest winter playground. From Zurs, skiers can now board the new Trittkopfbahn 1 cable car and travel all the way to the new Trittkopfbahn 2 station, or alight at the new mid-station and jump on the Flexenbahn. This brand new 10 person gondola provides a long awaited connection between Zurs and Stuben as well as access to the new Run of Fame, a 65km circuit with 18,000m of vertical! Travelling 1.8km in just six minutes, the Flex lift can transport 2,400 people p/hour to Alpe Rauz, where lift connections to St Anton and St Christoph begin. From here, the fourth new gondola, Albonabahn 2, continues to the top of Stuben. This brand new 40m investment in lift infrastructure elevates the Ski Arlberg area to the big league alongside the likes of the Espace Killy in France. THE SKIING! 1

2 St Anton skiing offers gentle wide nursery slopes in the Nasserein and Gampen areas. Once graduated from the choice of nursery slopes, beginners can make for the blues from the Ostang chair or take the Gampen lift up to the Plattiwald trail. The Nasserein and Rendl side also offer some lovely pistes. Intermediates looking for a challenge can choose from St Anton s miles of groomed but demanding runs, the longest being the 10.2km descent from Valluga Ulmer Hutte St Anton. Intermediates will also enjoy the classic reds and blacks accessed via the Galzigbahn whilst the World Cup downhill run from Kapall is always a technique tester. Skiers looking for an adventure can try the famous White Ring that swings from the snowy ski-arena of Zurs, across the Madloch (a wonderful descent to Zug) then via the Kriegerhorn to Oberlech for a well-deserved lunch. In the trees now, ski the Schlegelkopf to Lech, cross the river, savour the ambience of this fairy-tale village for a moment, then it s up the Rufikopf cablecar, and on via Pazietal to Tritalm, then back to Zurs again. Unlike other resorts, St Anton s skiable peaks quickly ascend to dizzying degrees of verticality with the toughest skiing at the top of Schindler and Valluga. For advanced skiers Schindler, Mattun and Valluga offer the most accessible off-piste itineraries with open bowls, steep chutes and narrow gullies. Nestling at the foot of the north-facing Albona, Stuben is shielded from the sun in December and January so holds its powder for weeks and offers some fantastic powder descents into the Maroi bowl, and down to the village of Langen. The big one of course, is the north face of the Valluga which is seriously steep at the top before giving way to open powder fields down to Zurs. LIFT PASSES The Arlberg is a huge ski area encompassing St Anton, Lech and Zurs along with other resorts such as St Christoph, Stuben and the newly connected Warth / Schrocken ski area from the Lech side of the Arlberg. The full area lift pass covers all these areas and offers great value for money. APRES SKI & NON SKIING ACTIVITIES St Anton après ski is an international phenomenon! The legendary Mooserwirt, where an alleged 5000 beers are served per day, sits 300m from the bottom of the last run home. If that doesn t sound like quite your thing carry on down to Underground on the Piste, hidden away just above the Galzigbahn, whose cosy candlelit atmosphere makes for a classy alternative, or warm up with a gluhwein in Anton Cafe at the top of the high street. Non-skiing options in St Anton ski resort are numerous. The Arlberg Wellness centre has indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, massage and gym classes. There s also ice-skating, curling, bowling and normal and ice climbing walls. A choice of toboggan runs is available but the best is the illuminated 4.3km Rodelbahn Gampen run. The St Anton Museum of Skiing is housed in the beautiful old Arlberg Kandahar House, built by Bernhard Trier in 1912, and offers some interesting insights into the history of the sport. For a truly magical winter experience take a horse-drawn sleigh ride from Lech to Zug. Up on the hill, you ll find a lot of history in St Anton ski resort s mountain restaurants, plus lower prices than you might expect. Try the delicious Tyrolean fare of the 100 year old! 2

3 ! Ulmerhutte at the top of Arlenmahder. Cafe Restaurant Dorfstuba in Stuben just happens to be the birthplace of Hannes Schneider or the popular Rodelhutte on the route to Nasserein has a lovely rustic alpine atmosphere and Tyrolean cuisine. At the top of Galzig, enjoy posh nosh on Verwallstube s sunny terrace or the restaurant at the top of Valluga has some stunning panoramic views and is also accessible to walkers. THE VILLAGE The village is steeped in history. Hannes Schneider came from Stuben in 1906 to found not only the ski school, but the famous Arlberg method, which he eventually exported to the U.S.A. He was followed by Rudi Matt, Karl Schranz, Harald Rofner, and now Richard Walter. It is to this famed ski school that we enrol should you wish to opt for instruction. Home also of the Arlberg- Kandahar race, founded by Arnold Lunn and Lord Roberts (of Kandahar). It s the home of many World and Olympic champions. 4 areas are well furnished and very welcoming creating a warm and attractive atmosphere. The cosy bar. All the well sized bedrooms have en-suite bath and w.c. and cable TV. The Hotel Serves (Incl in price); Wholesome breakfast buffet, with fruit juices, cereals, breads, pastries, fruits, yoghurt, a full cooked breakfast and freshly brewed teas and coffees. Afternoon Tea to welcome us from the slopes, including soup, cakes, bread and jams, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. Three-course evening meal, with choices for each course, complemented with unlimited wine. Chalet staff night off is Thursday. After dinner fresh tea / coffee. Inghams Chalet Rosanna (20 Guest Capacity)!!! SKI GROUPS Skiing in groups of about 5-8 people is an important aspect of Snowcat club skiing. We offer multiple groups of like-ability skiers to suit most standards, so providing your ability level is intermediate (see below note) through to expert, we can offer a well-matched group for you. Forming these groups and refining their standards has been the work of many years. Exact standard group skiing is a rare commodity, and an impossibility among small private ski parties. It is the Snow-Cats greatest asset, and we are always delighted to offer it each year to our members. Therefore, coming with the Snowcats means you will wish to participate in group skiing and may even be asked to lead a group. Friends wishing to ski together may sometimes form their own group but should nominate a leader and be prepared to absorb others. Ski Ability Note Newcomers joining the Snowcats need to be beyond beginner stage and should be as a minimum competent down blue runs. Skiers who are not yet at this experience level are most welcome in the Snowcats ranks however will be asked to join ski school until their ability level matches that of the lower group. Alternative flights may be available upon request available (supplement will apply). Insurance The Snowcats does not provide any form of travel insurance so we ask that party members arrange their own Travel / Ski Insurance. Ski Carriage ( 40) - needs to be pre-arranged and paid for through the Snowcats prior to departure.
