8 South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club Vale Lesley Patrick O Reilly 19 June June 2015 (93 and 3 days) Lesley was my elder brother who was born and raised at Newtown, Sydney. The O Reilly family was one of many boys and girls. During World War 2 he joined the RAAF as a mechanical engineer maintaining the flying Catalina s. After the War, Les retrained as a carpenter and with his wife Naida moved to Collaroy Plateau and started their family. He joined the family club Sth.Narra.SLSC in 1946, with my brother Michael & I (Chica). He gained his Bronze Medallion in 1947 at Nth Narrabeen, in a rather large surf, as Northy is known for. Les was an active member of the club for many years thereafter. Les had a lot of good mates, as many of the young Service Men also returned home to their families and their club. He loved Sth Narra and very much enjoyed the Sunday morning surf races, beach and novelty events. Over the years he became an ardent golfer and was an active member with the Manly Warringah Leagues Club Golf Club. He loved playing in the Sth Narra annual golf day at Royal Avalon and was always a willing support in assisting our Fred Bertram with the tot of rum and bonox after the hitoff after the first tee in those early winter mornings. Les was always a behind the scenes worker who diligently assisted where ever he could, especially every Friday evening in running the chook raffles at the Royal Antler Hotel. (2 bob 2 birds was his call sign). He also participated in many club activities in a supportive role rather than front runner. Les always encouraged his children to be part of the Sth Narra family community and of his four sons one also had an active part in developing the club. Les and Naida s life was one of hard struggle after the War and then raising their children: not much different from today; but they loved their family club. They did what they could and enjoyed the experiences afforded them. Les was a member of Sth Narrabeen SLSC and also my brother. Chica O Reilly Life Governor 6

10 South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club Presidents Report 8 When I took on the Presidency this season, I was excited about this new adventure and developing the Fun, Social and Supportive culture at South Narrabeen whilst maintaining the highest standards in Lifesaving and Education. In following those who have led this great Club before me, I set out to improve our overall position as a Club and to enhance the experience and enjoyment of our members as they committed their valuable time to keep the members of the public safe on our section of the coastline, and or work behind the scenes in the administration of the many club activities. Leadership in a volunteer organisation is challenging. As the new CIub President, I had to quickly learn our Constitution, By-laws and SLSA policy and still seek advice on many occasions. I believe that our Constitution has served us well in the past as a small club however there are many areas where our Constitution and By-laws needs updating to accommodate our future as a leading and progressive club within our Branch. There are many people I would like to thank. First of all I would like to sincerely thank all our volunteer lifesavers for all their time and efforts over this season. While earlier in the season there was limited beach to patrol, Southy continued the great status of No Lives Lost whilst our volunteers were on patrol. A massive thank you to our Chief Training Officer, Matt Fordham. Matt s values of incorporating fun and support is a direct parallel with what our Club is all about. Through Matt s time, dedication and amazing education team, Southy has been able to welcome to Surf Life Saving all our new Bronze and SRCs. Our training continues through the winter with IRB training, thanks to Grant Shapcott and his IRB training team. Our Club Secretary, Martin Hayward, who has been a dedicated surf lifesaver and Secretary year after year, a huge thank you for your ongoing support through all the challenges this season. The sensational work that our Nippers Chairman, Richard Dowling, has done this year has resulted in a well-deserved award Club Person of the Year. Richard has been a great asset on the Committee. His dedication and focus with the youth really sets a solid future for our club. It is always great to see the orange caps on the beach, and I would like to thank all those, young and old, who have represented our club over the season at a Club, Branch, State and at Aussies level Surf Lifesaving Competitions. Ted Billet and Jack Cannons AM ran a very successful Bush to Beach program for its 11th year in a row. Ted, Jack and the Bush to Beach Committee work tirelessly on grants and sponsors to make this a fun and enjoyable event for the kids of Bree and the surrounding area. I wish them and the Bush to Beach committee the best of luck in our Branch Awards of Excellence nominations. Thanks to Rohan, Charles and Sarah for organizing the Presentation Night and congratulations to all our club award winners. It is with great pride I had the opportunity to give Karen Shapcott the President s Award. The time and work she has put into the club behind the scenes is second to none. Our Patrol Member of the Year, Simon Learmonth, seems to be always available to help with everything, thank you Simon. The Nick Brice Life Saver of the Year award went to a very worthy recipient, Grant Shapcott, who has always been a focused leader in surf life saving at our club thank you Grant and congratulations. Nick Brice thanks for being in our lives, we do all miss you mate, RIP. I must also mention the future of our club, the Cadets of the Year, Ethan Shapcott and Emma Downham and Juniors of the Year, Kate Dampney and Brad Cross congratulations. Ethan Shapcott also did a great job representing our club at our Branch Junior Lifesaver of the Year. I would also like to sincerely thank our Club Captain, Shannan Hitchen. All the time you have spent with our members and the Club has kept us heading in the right direction. Thank you for all your support and standing up to all the challenges thrown at you this season. Also a big thanks to each of our Patrol Captains (Jake, Jess, Peter, Torch, Grant, Angie, Talal, Martin,

11 2015/16 Annual Report Andy Barr, and Shannan) for guiding their patrols and keeping the beach safe. Patrol 4 you have been awesome this season and made my job as Patrol Captain so fun and easy easy. Congratulations to Patrol 6 for Patrol of the Year, Peter Madden, great work. Thanks everyone for stepping up with the extra patrols when required. A special mention must go to Warwick Blackman, who completed over 400 hours on Surf Com duties so very well done Warwick, true South Narrabeen dedication. To the Life Membership and Honours Committee has truly done a great job recognising some of our outstanding members. I would like to thank our Clubs Life Governor, Charles O Reily, our Life Members, Ted Billet, Brett Picknell and Chris Brown, and our Club Captain, Shannan Hitchen, for their time and decisions. Congratulations to our National Service Medal recipients recognising long and diligent service by members of recognised government and voluntary organisations that risk their lives or safety to protect or assist the community in enforcement of the law or in times of emergency or natural disaster. To Matt Fordham, Ted Billett, Simon Learmonth, Brett Picknell, Chris Brown and Peter Madden. To all the people who brought new events to the club, I really appreciate your efforts. Thanks to Sarah and Matt Oaten for a successful golf day. Angie, Chris, Lisa, Jane and many other club members for the successful social events, including the Nachos night and the Burger and Beer night. It was great to see so many club members and the local community down at the club and all having a great time. A huge thank you must certainly also go out to our Branch for all their help and guidance throughout this season. A big South Narrabeen thank you to our Branch President Doug Menzies, Shannon Job and the team, Steve, Jen, Belinda, Marcial, Nick, John, Trish and her team from TIPS thank you. Thank you to the Branch sponsors Streets, Lipton Ice Tea, URM, Dee Why RSL, Bill Buckle Auto Group,Westfield Warringah Mall, Cancer Institute NSW and RFi Group, and to National Sponsors Telstra and DHL. Thank you also to the Club s sponsors and Warringah Council for your support our club would not be able to function without your generous support. I would like to thank the Club Committee. A Committee as we all know, is a group of dedicated people who come to together in their role as Volunteers to make the day to day decisions of the organisation and in this instance the South Narrabeen Surf Club. The role given to committee members is one of responsibility and stewardship and requires many, many hours of time and thoughtful decision making. A committee person and the role each person undertakes is one to be admired, respected and honoured as the due diligence, care takers of the Club for the nominated term. The challenges presented throughout the season certainly have been an experience and an education for me as a new President. I look forward to a more positive and productive season for all our members and the Club in 2016/17. Angie Thorpe I wish to express my sincere thanks for all your support, smiles and hours spent building this annual report. A big thank you must go to my kids, Alana, Nate and Brad for hanging in there with the time that was required this season. Thanks for your patience, understanding and love. To all members, from the youngest nipper, all the way up to our wonderful life members, I thank you for making South Narrabeen SLSC fun, social and supportive. See you in the salt water Andy Cross President 9

24 South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club Finance Report 22 It gives me great pleasure to present the financial statements of South Narrabeen SLSC for the year ended 30th April Financial Summary The income statement shows a net deficit for the year of approximately $49,878. This is significantly impacted by the recognition of $54,000 of depreciation expense, the increase principally relating to the depreciation of last season s building works. A further $14,000 for loss on disposal of assets (Club Car, kiosk equipment and awning). On a normalised cash basis, that excludes depreciation expense but includes expenditure on new equipment, there was net surplus of approximately $14,000. This is down on last year by $19,000 which is mainly due to income received for the Kiosk. Whilst a nett profit of $14,000 may seem a satisfactory result we need to be conscious that it takes on average $115,000 per annum to run the operations of the club, leaving next to nothing to invest in the Club. With costs rising and income decreasing we cannot be complacent in maintaining all sources of income especially when we have signed lease with council that stipulates we have to maintain the internal and to some extent the external maintenance of the Club. Added to the equation there is a definite need to improve the Ocean View Room, foyer, carpet, kitchen and bar fridges, add on a new training facility and further improve the grounds. This of great concern to all of us. Income Highlights Hall hire was up 10% on previous year and continues to be the club s major source of income. Golf Day in its inaugural year raised $3,274. Special thanks goes to Sarah and Matt Oaten. Kiosk income never happened this year due to a long and lengthy debate with Council over the introduction of 25% café component rent should the club sublease to a third party. The result of which our prospective tenant could not abide by these terms. Expenditure Highlights The purchase of the BRP Commander ATV including SLS Patrol kit for $9,682. This was our share of the $4$ SLS NSW BRP Grant. Final payment of Council s penalty notice was made. Total of the fine was $3,000. Consultants Fees of $7,800 are made up - legal fees to Council and solicitor $1,850 - legal fees to lawyers for sub-lease $2,425 - draughtsmen fee for S96 submission $2,700 - PCA and engineers fee $860 Other points to note are A write down of Fixed Assets ($54,444) for 2007 / 2008 was made. Thanks To those individuals, businesses and organisations who made financial donations and donations in-kind I thank you. Your support is very much appreciated and has helped our Club enormously. Special contributions were Roche Products Pty Ltd and Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal.

25 2015/16 Annual Report A special thank you to Martin Thompson of Wong & Mayes Chartered Accountants for auditing our accounts and Bob Buckingham of Alan Hall Business Advisers for their continued accounting advice. In closing I would like to thank all those who have helped me and offered me advice this season, especially Thecla Haven and Tony Haven AM, Karen Shapcott, Sarah Morrison and my fellow Committee Member colleagues. See you on the beach. Charles Longley, Hon Finance Director 23

42 South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club Lifesaving Report Firstly I would like to thank everyone for the encouragement and support that was given to me during the2015/16 season. Congratulations to everyone from all areas of the club on what was another successful season at South Narrabeen. Welcome to all the new members for this season; we hope that being part of the South Narrabeen SLSC is everything you expected and more. This season was a successful one in many areas. From a patrolling aspect we had a mixture of eventful days and some slow ones, but we were fortunate that overall it was a safe season. In the instructional area, Matt Fordham and his team worked extremely hard this season training our new Bronze certificate and SRC certificate holders thank you for providing countless hours helping our newest members. We continued to see an increase in numbers in all the training squads. I would strongly encourage all of our active members to continue to gain lifesaving awards after obtaining lifesaving bronze. The more qualified we are the better equipped we are to deal with any situation we might be confronted with on the beach. A special mention to our IRB trainers this season I don t recall seeing as many crews going thru in one season amazing effort to all involved. Thank you to all those members who rose to the challenge and gained further awards throughout the season. This year we had the pleasure of hosting the Bush 2 Beach program once again and I would like to thank all those Patrolling members and members whom assisted with the running of the event another huge success in regards to this annual initiative. All members wearing the Red and Yellow quartered caps are to be commended on the level of commitment and professionalism they demonstrated on the beach throughout the season. South Narrabeen SLSC was well represented at most carnivals. Thanks also to families and friends for their support around the Club. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who volunteered their time in any capacity this season. For our Patrolling members the awareness, preventions hard work and dedication keep the South Narrabeen banner held in high regard throughout the Surf lifesaving fraternity. We are all volunteers and at the end of the day without your help we wouldn t be the club we are today. See you on the sand in 2016/17. Shannan Hitchen Director Of Lifesaving 40

48 South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club Surf Sports Report 46 Winter is a daunting time for any surf competitor, with the uncertainty of the season ahead, and we here at South Narrabeen are no exception. The cold months off from competition allows reflection from the previous season s achievements, and planning of work to come. It is a time when attitudes and personalities clash, where ties are cut and bonds are broken. It is also the time when crews begin to form, and the smell of competition stirs. In the gym, on the beach, in the streets, hard work and determination, mean for some the chance to compete under the orange cap for yet another season, be it on a board or in the boat, laying the foundations for the next 8 months. This season saw the return of the two U23 crews from last season: The Speed Dealers (U23 Men) and The Sliders (U23 Women) as well as a surprise late appearance from The Sharks (Reserves). After a great season last year, both under 23 crews had expectations to meet, and results to best, both of which were done in an exceptional manner. The Sharks, consisting of rowing alumni, only forming mid-season, knew there was hard work to be done, and were not to be outdone, also putting in a stellar season. Back to sweep this season, Mick Haven returned to the long oar for the two U23 crews, as well as Johnny Clark, who stepped up again to take on the reserves crew. It was great to see the boys work together, learning from and mentoring one another throughout the year as good sweeps do. This season as many prior, brought with it a fair share of hurdles and challenges, but nothing either couldn t handle. I think I speak for all the rowers when I give thanks for your commitment again this season gentlemen, your hard work certainly does not go unnoticed. Training in the rain, before work, in the dark, in the gym, or commuting from other side of Sydney or beyond just to make it in time, thank you. As always, this season was jam packed full of rowing events, some old favourites, as well as some new experiences for some, including but not limited to: SNB Branch Carnivals at Newport, Warriewood and North Curly, ASRL events at both Manly and Shellharbour, Coffs Harbour Open Craft Carnival, Pacific Palms Battle Of the Boats, championships for branch (Palm Beach) and State (Umina), International Young Guns at Collaroy, Ocean Thunder at Dee Why (4 Rounds) and of course, Aussies at Alexandra Headlands. The surf as always this year was completely unpredictable and tested our sweeps and crews time and time again. Unfortunately it did get the better of us at times, but what season wouldn t be complete without a few injuries and hiccups along the way. These drove us harder to perform and we got to see yet again some of he finest sweeping around with some stunning surf work from crew and sweep alike, as well as in the lake at Pacific Palms. The club s competition night held on May 21st, was a chance for me to show my appreciation in full for our competitors this season, and for celebration formally for the year that has been, while I was humbled by the boat rowers to be awarded rower s rower, it was some of our more senior rowers that picked up the prestigious awards this year: Competitor of the year: Michael Haven Rower of the year: Isaac Freudenstein Rower s Rower: Jake Warner The Slides [U23 Women] Alana Cross, Brittany Smith, Marissa Curnow & Sarah Bojko The Sliders truly are an inspirational crew both on and off the beach. This season saw the girls sidelined somewhat due to injury, but that did not stop their passion for the sport or their dedication to their team. Every weekend saw them under the tent and helping with boats, and running, rowing and training harder each and every week and I personally can attest to this. Learning to sweep this year was made a pleasure by the girls, who I swept once a week for

49 2015/16 Annual Report morning sessions in the lake, and it was clear to me that all their hard work was paying off, despite these minor setbacks. This is not to say though, that they didn t make the most of their time competing on the weekends. In the carnivals they attended, the girls surprised themselves with some fabulous results and their hard work really did show, excellent season girls, very proud. Unfortunately the girls did not get the chance to row at the branch championships, but made the top 8 at the State titles, excellent achievement! The Speed Dealers [U23 Men] Jake Warner, Kelvin Thorpe, Lachlan Cummings & Michael Bojko My crew. A bunch of young lads whom I spend more time with than my own family for 8 months. This season as per usual had its share of ups and downs, but we managed to pull through and really achieve this season, despite some results not going quite how we had hoped. Training was tough this year, a long season halfway into April saw fatigue set in on more than one occasion, but again a banding together saw us really shine in the end. We were also incredibly humbled to have entered the Ocean Thunder this season. As a colts crew this is far and away and exceptional performance and I think we rose to the challenge accordingly, and hopefully return to the series next year, to better our performance. We could not have done this though, without help from our sponsors Aptus Accounting, MS Interiors, Vibe Electrical and Dream Doors, all integral to the campaign with their generous sponsorship. We managed to gold at this year s inaugural short course ASRL event at Manly, and were thrilled to make top 12 at the Australian titles in April, as well as consistent top 6 finishes, and an overall 17th out of 28 crews at the Ocean Thunder. Very impressed boys bring on next season. Sharks [Reserves] Dave Frew, Isaac Freudenstein, Michael Boyle & Michael Haven The pinnacle of rowing here at South Narrabeen. This season saw a triumphant return to the orange and brown from one of our alumni Dave Frew from Queenscliff. The boys really made their presence on the beach known this year. Having only formed officially at Christmas, the boys did not delay getting stuck in to training and competing, with several medals to their name attesting to this. The sharks had a few forays this year into the masters division, which is great for both the club and the sport, and in doing so earned themselves some gold medals. A few of the boys rowed on and off last season, but was great to see them return for the most part of this year solid and consistent. The boys picked up gold at both state and branch championships in the masters 120 Years Division, with multiple cameos from rowing veteran Stuart Haven. Hopefully we will see the boys next season and see what more they have in store for us. Board Team [Short and Long] Andrew Cross & Nigel Wickens While some of us here at Southy Hit the water with an oar, there are a select few who take pride in representing this club on their surfboards. Unfortunately, the surfing season takes a bit longer than the usual surf sports season, with the branch only having been held thus far, but with the results to date, the upcoming state titles will hopefully be another medal chance for the boys. Andy truly is an inspirational competitor, not only being president of this surf cub, but also managing to pick up a gold medal in the long boards at this years branch, with Nigel collecting silver in the short boards. A very well done to both the boys, terrific result and good luck at State and Aussies! 47

50 South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club Flags Stuart Haven A competition wrap up from this season wouldn t be complete without mentioning this young man. At 32 years of age, not only has Stu been instrumental in the boat section this year, but has also had his first taste of the beach events at a national level. Stuart stepped up to the occasion and competed for South Narrabeen in flags at this years Australian Titles. While he made it through a few rounds, an unfortunate trip ended his campaign early, but in doing so has inspired others to take up similar events next year, well done Stu, our first beach competitor in a very many years. Officials Tony & Thecla Haven Most would not know that in surf competition of any shape or form, cubs actually require officials as part of an entry, so that a clubs competitors can enter said event. Most of what we compete in here at South Narrabeen would not be possible without our wonderful officials Tony (Torch) and Thecla. Thecla is the head of administration at boat Carnivals, and similarly Torch is the head referee. Not only do these two looks after us on the beach, but also sort out entries for rowing and surfing, and as such a massive thank you for all your hard work on and off the sand this year! Having only stepped into the role of competition director at the beginning of this 2015/16 season, I was overwhelmed by the sheer quality of the sportsmanship, hard work and determination shown by all codes here at South Narrabeen. I don t think I could be any prouder of what we have all achieved this season and hopefully I will see al the smiling faces again next year. We are always looking for competitors here at Southy, from nippers to rowers and surfers, if you or your children want to compete please don t hesitate to approach me, I would love to hear form you, the future of the club! 52 South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club Junior Activities Report South Narrabeen Nippers again had a good year with a lot of fun had by all on the sand and in the water. Our numbers were steady and inline with previous years. Year on Year we continue to see our Junior and Cadets grow. Our strong and growing SRCs group represent the next generation of South Narrabeen lifesavers. It is also very pleasing to see a number of new nipper families. As outlined in the previous AGM report, the nipper s committee established a number of key objectives for the current and future seasons (2-3 year vision). These were to: Continue to Grow the nipper Community, Build on the success of the SRC / Cadet programs established in previous years, Continue the focus on Water based activities and skills, Surf and Beach Education, Encourage more parent involvement, and Have a heap of fun with our Kids! In keeping with our objective to have heaps of fun, we continued on with our annual social events, including the Christmas Parties. And the final nippers of the year the annual muck up day and parent events. Nippers ran very smoothly this year, due to the hard work of the nippers parents. We had age managers in most of the age groups, and when required parents willing to step up with minimum fuss. The key for us was that a large number of people did their bit, which made it enjoyable for all. A Sunday morning on the beach just wouldn t be complete without a BBQ d bacon and egg roll. Not only providing a valuable service to hungry Nippers, the proceeds of the Nippers Kiosk go back into help the club provide the require nippers equipment and upkeep. All this would not have been possible, without the motivation and dedication of Karen Shapcott. I would also like to extend my thanks to our Nipper Parent s of the year Melanie and Brad Morton for the running of the BBQ each and every week. As outlined above, the success of Nippers is dependent on the help of many. With a number of the Nippers families now having their children move more in the early stages of surf lifesaving (i.e SRC and Bronze) we need to rebuild the team of Nipper volunteers and helpers for the 2016/17 season. I look forward to the coming season, to build upon our 2015/16 successes. See you on the beach. Richard Dowling Director of Junior Activities In particular I would like call out our Nipper Parent of the year, Wayne Nolan. His energy and drive to get around all water activities provided many of our nippers with opportunity to further enhance and refine their skills, whether it be on the board or swimming in the surf. 50

54 South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club Sponsorship and Grants Thanks to all our dedicated members for their continued service for the 2015/2016. This season saw me have about 10 months off from the club before I put my hand up for the vacant sponsorship position. A Sponsorship Director is a very vital role for any Surf Life Saving Club to succeed and without the continued support of The Sands Hotel I have already started working on gaining a potential major sponsor for the club.watch this Space A big thanks to Sarah & Matt Oaten for organising a successful Golf Day earlier in the season. A lot of work behind the scenes went into making the day a great day with the support of members, associates and some new sponsors. A huge thanks must go to Black Build Projects (Matt Oaten, Luke Cannon), MS Interiors (Simon Smith) and Greencap for the Sponsorship contributions this year. This year saw Aptus Accounting & Advisory, Stuart Haven (Vibe Electrical), Scott Morrison (Dream Doors Sydney North) and Simon Smith sponsor our U23s Men rowing team for the annual Ocean Thunder. This was the first year our team compete against Open Mens teams from all over the country. Well done Boys. Moving forward to 2016/17, there are some exciting events that the current committee are organising. Stay tuned. To all our members, enjoy your winter break and see you all next seaons. 56 South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club Golf Day 2016 saw South Narrabeen SLSC run their first charity golf day! Having never organised a golf day nor played 18 holes of the game I knew I had a challenge in front of me. With ominous weather looming on the morning of Friday February 5, 2016, 34 players teed off at Long Reef Golf Club. Thanks must go to sponsors and supporters of the day for their generous contributions. I hope that everyone had a fun day out on the course. Further thanks must go to both my husband, Matt (Black Build Projects) and Sandy who organises the corporate golf through Long Reef Golf Club. Thank you also to Torch and Charles for their help on the day selling drinks and flogging raffle tickets. Going forward I see this day as our major fund raiser for South Narrabeen SLSC and more importantly it is a terrific Club day. 61 2015/16 Annual Report 59

62 South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club Building and Development This year has been one of tidying up, repairs and maintenance, submission s S96 with Council, installations, sale of assets and working with Dave Hauser our Work Health and Safety Officer. Tidying Up With the completion of the Store room Council was contacted in order to get sign off and sign off for SLS NSW grant process. Final payment of the Grant requires this before we get paid. Repairs and Maintenance After several years of ringing Council about roof leaks, this year turned out to be a success, I can now say that we no longer have a deluge of water dripping onto the parquetry floor in the Ocean View Room. S96 Submission to further improve and make the kiosk/café be more efficient we submitted an S96 with Council to install and new kitchen, exhaust fan, a fixed weather proof awning, walk through access and supply of gas. Completion of works we anticipate will be ready for the next season. Sale of Assets has been a long and lengthy process with little return. I honestly believe that it would be easier to sell your mother. Work Health and Safety As mentioned I have been working with Dave Hauser on internal and external issues. So, if you see some new signs about you ll know we ve been there. One of the main problems that we have is with the rear (eastern side of the Club) external stair case. As per our lease this is a Council responsibility and hence we have written to Council explaining the need for the steps to have non-slip treads. We are waiting on their reply. Next year we envisage on submitting a new DA for a training room, bringing the old kitchen into the 21st century and submitting grant applications for the lift which seems to have escaped Council s attention. Add, a new lawn which has been swallowed up by the Ocean, new carpet for the Ocean View Room and there you have it. Regards Mark Dimento Independent Director 60

63 2015/16 Annual Report First Floor Report I would like to thank Charles Longley for his dedication in performing the roles of Function Centre Manager and Bar Manager. Charles has performed both roles on a volunteer basis this has increased the income of the Club as he had declined to accept a wage. The club called for expressions of interest for the roles of Function Manage and bar Manager. The prospective candidates were interviewed for the positions and a recommendation was made to the Club Committee and Nicole Prestinenzi accepted the role of Function Manager. At the time of writing we are waiting on a reply from the person that the role of Bar Manager was offered to. The trading of the Ocean View Room has been good without generating major much needed income. The Function Centre is badly in need of an upgrade especially the kitchen, the entrance foyer and an awning over the balcony. At the finish of last summer the Kiosk shut. Your committee made the decision to have a kitchen fitted to the Kiosk. This decision was made to improve the Kiosk, reduce the costs and take the pressure off the Ocean View Room Kitchen. The club met with Warringah Council who granted permission to sub-lease the Kiosk to an operator. The club called for expressions of interest and three prospective operators were interviewed and Sean Cleary was recommended to the committee who adopted the recommendations. Sean also has a coffee cart operating Saturday and Sunday mornings, even during winter. Come down and introduce yourself, great coffees. Sean is presently fitting out the kitchen in the Kiosk. He will be up and running for summer. We are looking forward to a much needed increase income next season. I would like to thank my fellow committee members Charles Longley and Mark Boof Dimento for their time and effort over the past season, also the Club Committee for their support over the past season. Tony Haven AM Chairperson 61

64 South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club In the Community Each year South Narrabeen recognises a member who has done outstanding work in the community. This year the award was given to Jake Warner, congratulations. Pub to Club This year the annual Pub to Pub was transferred to the Pub to Club while renovations occured at the Newport Arms. South Narrabeen SLSC provided road safety, first aid, facilities directions and general good old motivation for runners on their way up Pittwater Road. A great fundraiser for the club. A big thank to all those that volunteered and helped out during the morning, Michael Cross, Chris Gale, Louse Bengston, Andy Cross, Jake Warner, Ellie Morton, Nigel Wickens, Isabel Hewes, Jerome Lyndon, Ben Hewes, Charlie Davies, Brad Cross, Kate Dampney, Emily Bojko, Ash Watson, Matt Fordham, Jessica Brealey, Chris Blatchford, Angie Thorpe. Beach to Bush The Beach to Bush is a national program that sees groups of two to three people head west to educate school children about surf safety and what to do when visiting the beach. This year Andy Cross and Angie Thorpe were selected to participate in this program. In November they headed northwest to Tamworth and visited 10 schools in the surrounding area, talking to over 1700 school children from kindy through to Year 12. It was a very rewarding trip with lots of zinc, colour and smiles. Thong Throwing Australia Day was another opportunity to raise money for the club. The nipper parents got involved to provide Thong Throwing at the local Australia Day activities. A great day had by all with the furthest thong to be thrown was 46m. Members had lots of fun dodging the thongs thrown and returning the thongs to base. A huge thank you to Richard, Barbara, Lachlan and Jemima Dowling, Grant, Karen, Connor and Ethan Shapcott, Shannan Hitchen, Andy Cross and Angie Thorpe and all the others that helped out on the day. Weddings and Proposals At South Narrabeen we are always here to help. Be it getting grandmothers down to a beach wedding, or ensuring guests are protected from the sun. Southy proved it was a great place for a wedding with heaps of friendly service. A surprise wedding proposal was written in the sand when two of our members decided to get married. Southy members wrote in the sand Marry me Lou. Congratulations Nigel and Louise. (PS she said yes) 62

67 2015/16 Annual Report Bush to Beach This year the club again successfully held its 11th consecutive program that involved 40 Aboriginal children from the outback town of Brewarrina to the club to learn new skills, experience city life, and meet new friends and to observe volunteer lifesavers in action. This group of children were a new bunch who comprised both boys and girls and were selected to attend the program as a reward for improved school attendance for the year. The Bush to Beach committee comprising of Peter Madden (Life Member) Ken & Di Passmore, Kim Brown, Cal Smyth, Jack Cannons AM, Brett Picknell (Life Member) & Chris White did an outstanding job in planning and organizing the program. The program would not have been a success without the tremendous support of club members, many community members, members from Collaroy and Queenscliff SLSC clubs, sponsors, Michael Regan (Warringah Council, Brad Hazzard MP, Bronwyn Bishop, staff from Brewarrina Shire and the Elders who accompanied the group on the program. The clubs Committee got behind the program with gusto and special mention to Andy Cross, Matt Fordham and Shannon Hitchen for working tirelessly over the weekend to ensure that safety was paramount, the children learnt CPR/first aid and were well supervised in all of their activities. The Bush to Beach is not a club event but a community event and every bit of assistance offered by individuals and organisations is genuinely appreciated. One mother of a Brewarrina child wrote to me and said This program has helped boost Keira s confidence and socialisation skills as she doesn t get to mix with other children often since we live so far out of town. It is becoming harder each year to fund the program due to rising costs of the 50 seater bus, food, organized activities at the Narrabeen Sports Academy, Insurance of the children and I am unsure how long the program can run. Funding for the program comes from the combined effort of the sub-committee and no surf club funds are used. All workers involved are Volunteers and from my research is one of the largest voluntary lifesaving programs in NSW where children 40 children and 8 Elders are transported from the remote areas of the outback to the beach. This year we were ably assisted in the background by Chris and Jenny Blake (both retired school teachers) from Mudgee who came on board to assist and have just recently returned from an outback trip to Brewarrina to catch up with various Headmistresses at local schools. We were also fortunate to receive assistance from 8 students from the Rural Health Doctors (ROUNDS) and they assisted Matt Fordham in teaching the children CPR/first aid and when the students finish their training they will allocated medical positions in various rural towns. Ted Billett Social Nights New Years Eve A fun way to see in the New Year with good friends. It was great to see so many club members enjoying a casual BBQ before walking down to Long Reef headland to watch the fireworks. Nachos Night This was the first of a program of monthly social nights designed to engage members and the local community in a fun and social environment. The turn out for our first event was terrific and resulted in a sell out. Even though this was not a fundraiser, a profit of $300 was made. Burger and Beer Night Following on from the success of the Nachos night, our amazing chef, Chris Blatchford, suggested a Burger and Beer Night. This included live music and promotion in the Manly Daily. It was great to see so many new faces from the local community coming down and getting involved. The burgers were amazing and the beer cold. This night and the burgers at nippers the next morning, raised over $1,000 for the club. A huge thank you to the many club members who got behind these social nights and helped out. Special mention must go to Chris Blatchford, Lisa Hayward, Angie Thorpe, Jane and Kyla Whitfield, Keera McAdam and many more. It was great to see so many involved. 65
