3 Itinerary Day 1 Kona Airport to Waikoloa W e will meet you at Kona International Airport. From there we head north up the coast along the route of the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon. The transfer to your hotel in Waikoloa takes a little over 30 minutes. Once at your hotel, we give you a full map briefing, bike fitting, and answer any questions you may have. If you forget something, don t worry as we re available 24/7 during your stay. Waikoloa, on the Kohala Coast, is what most people imagine when they think of Hawaii: beaches, palm trees and ocean sunsets. There is plenty to see and do here including paddle boarding, windsurfing, snorkeling and diving. There is good turtle viewing as well as golf and tennis. There are also historic sites such petroglyphs and royal fish ponds. If you d like to take a spin after your flight, there s a nice out-and-back route along back roads to Holoholokai Park. More energetic riders might ride into Kailua-Kona; 25 miles each way on the route of the Ironman. The Royal Fish Ponds at ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay are a palm-fringed wonder and great place to stroll at sunset. Optional Activities Paddle boarding, windsurfing, snorkeling, diving, turtle viewing, golf and tennis. A star-gazing trip up Mauna Kea can be arranged for the evening depending on your arrival time. 4 Itinerary Day 2 Waikoloa to Hawi T oday you leave Tourist Hawaii and head to Old Hawaii following the Ironman route all the way to Hawi (pronounced Ha-vee). As you ride, lava fields give way to high grasslands. Just before entering Hawi, the landscape becomes lush and tropical. En route you ll pass by Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site. Here, the great temple-turned-fort of King Kamehameha rises majestically above the turquoise waters of the Pacific. Lapakahi State Historical Park is another good stopping off point with reconstructed ruins of an ancient fishing village dating back to the 1300s. As you might expect, you pass by several other great beaches including Hapuna (named as one of the best beaches in US), Spencer, and Kapa a. Hawi is at the northern tip of the island. It has a small artist community and a number of art galleries. This is tropical, relaxed Hawaii. Just before you reach the town, you may see Maui off in the distance. You may also see hump back whales that come to the area to birth (December thru March). If you arrive early, it s well worth the ride on to Pololu Valley and its stunning black sand beach. The Kohala Coffee Mill in Hawi has the best ice cream on the island. 5 Itinerary Day 3 Hawi to Honoka a I t is a little over 20 miles from Hawi to Waimea but don t be fooled by the distance as you climb for some 15 of those miles and peak at 3,500 feet. If this sounds daunting, don t worry, there s no rush & we would be pleased to give you a van transfer partway or even all the way up the hill. Those that like a bit of a challenge will relish the climb up this quiet, tree-lined road that summits to exceptional views down the coast. In just a few miles, you transition from the lush, tropical world of Hawi to the open cattle ranches of Waimea highlands scenery reminiscent of Ireland. Waimea is a charming country town surrounded by the Parker Ranch; the largest privatelyowned cattle ranch in the US. Paniolo cowboy culture dominates but this small community also boasts some excellent restaurants as well as golf courses, theaters and craft stores. If you choose to stay in Honoka a, you ride a further 15 miles mostly downhill along the Old Mamalahoa Hwy. Honoka a mileages are shown in parenthesis [ ] below. See the Accommodation section below for more details. Stay in Waimea if you want to be in a cowboy town, eat at Merriman s Restaurant and don t mind cooler temperatures. Stay in Honoka a for or access to the Waipi o Valley, a more tropical vibe and warmer temperatures. 6 Itinerary Day 4 Honoka a to Kailua-Kona T oday you leave the uplands and head to the coast and the town of Kailua-Kona the main town of the island. [If you are staying in Honoka a you first climb up to Waimea along the picturesque Old Highway.] From Waimea the distance is 40 miles but with 3000 feet of descending and just 400 feet of climbing, this is easier than it might sound. For most of the ride the terrain is open and there are stunning views down to the Ocean. Vegetation is sparse as this is the dry part of the island and the lava flows are relatively recent. If you want to get there the hard way, you ll ride over the pass to Hawi before taking the route of the Ironman south to Kona. Kona is where the action is on the Big Island. Once a sleepy fishing village, this is now the island s main tourist town. As you d expect, there is no shortage of restaurants and tour agencies. But despite the bustle, Kona retains a seaside charm and there s a decent snorkeling beach. You can even try your hand at outrigger canoeing. In the evening, enjoy a pleasant after-dinner stroll along Ali i Drive. Kona also has a number of important historic sites including Kamehameha s personal temple and his Royal Court; the latter of which has a good museum. Hulihe e Palace & Museum is a two-story palace with Hawaiian artifacts and a good tour. 7 Itinerary Day 5 Kailua-Kona to Captain Cook T he day starts riding south along the oceanfront past many small beaches before you turn inland and climb up into coffee (and chocolate) country. Chocoholics might want to make a short detour to the Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory. There are also a number of places en route to taste the famous Kona coffee or take a plantation tour. Greenwell Farms is towards the end of your ride and has the best tour and the best coffee in area. You stay overnight in the town of Captain Cook. If you have time, we recommend riding past the town to Pu uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park (Place of Refuge). This is one of the most sacred and historical sites in Hawaii with many wooden carvings, ancient stone walls and a sacred temple. The ride here is along small lanes that skirt the coast bypassed by the main tourist traffic and ends with a stunning track across a lava field. Those looking for more miles will push on to the secluded Ho okena Beach. Captain Cook is a small town with a cluster of B&BS and low-key restaurants and cafes. Ride Options Short 15 miles Intermediate 30 miles Challenging 40 miles; 4400 feet of climbing Other Information Sights Pu uhonua o Honaunau (Place of Refuge) is a little south of Captain Cook and one of the best historic Hawaiian sites on the island. 8 Itinerary Day 6 In and Around Captain Cook T he area around Captain Cook lies between 800 feet and 2,000 feet with west facing slopes making it ideal for coffee growing. If you didn t tour a plantation yesterday, you might want to include that in today s activities. Similarly, if you didn t get to the Place of Refuge, you ll want to head down there today also. For a good intermediate ride, head to the lovely Ho okena Beach. The swimming is good here and you have a reasonable chance of seeing dolphins and turtles. If you re looking for even more miles, you ll continue south to South Point just to say you ve been to the southernmost point in the US. The other reason to stay in Captain Cook an extra day is for the kayaking and snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay. On this excursion you typically kayak across the bay before snorkeling in the warm, crystal clear waters near historic Captain Cook Monument. There are a host of tropical fish, vibrant corals and spinner dolphins. We would be happy to arrange any activities for you including snorkeling or kayaking. 9 Accommodation W e spend much of our time visiting and revisiting accommodation. We then choose the properties with the best facilities and warmest welcome across a range of prices. Our accommodation falls into four categories. The Prices section, below, explains how this category determines the cost of the trip. We typically book standard rooms with upgrades available on request. All accommodation subject to availability. Waikoloa Resorts (Kohala Coast) Our Waikoloa listings are on the northwest coast around Waikoloa Village. The hotels are spread down the coast and are typically large resorts with restaurants, activities and fine beaches. There are no B&Bs or moderately priced accommodation on this stretch of coast. Four Seasons Resort Mauna Lani Bay Hotel Waikoloa Beach Marriot Exceptional Luxury This is simply one of the best (if not the best) hotels on the Island. You stay in bungalows scattered about the property. Service is impeccable and there is a good beach. As you d expect, there are also great facilities: spas, tennis courts, pools etc. The food is outstanding and there s a private golf course. Just ask if you d like a room with a private outdoor lava shower. This is another idyllic resort with two sand beaches, outstanding restaurants, outdoors spa with lava-boulder walls and thatched-roofed booths. Service is impeccable and many facilities are free (in contract to other resorts) such as snorkel gear, beach cabanas, tennis, tours of petroglyphs, and daily treats. The golf courses are some of the best on the island. What this hotel lacks in charm it makes up for with an outstanding beach setting the hotel fronts onto the royal fishponds in front of ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay. Sunset is a real Kodak moment. The hotel has all the typical facilities, including kayaking, sailing, diving and spa. US & Canada: Other Page: 9

10 Accommodation Hawi There is only one reasonable place to stay in Hawi which is a basic, budget option. Kohala Village Inn At the other end of the spectrum, the Kohala Village Inn is a simple and modest plantation-style inn in the center of town. The staff is friendly and the rooms are clean and pleasant. Despite its simplicity, this property is popular with many of our guests and everything is nearby. NOTE: There is no breakfast included or available at this Inn. However, there are several good alternatives nearby. US & Canada: Other Page: 10

11 Accommodation Waimea and Honoka a In Waimea (officially Kamuela) Waimea is a small cowboy town with one basic inn but no high-end hotels or B&Bs. It does however have one of the best restaurants on the Island: Merriman s. Kamuela Inn The Kamuela Inn has been recently renovated and significantly upgraded. The inn is right in the center of town and an easy walk to shops and restaurants. Rooms are simple, cozy and nicely finished with new bathrooms. Overall, the inn is an unpretentious, clean and comfortable place to relax. In Honoka a Honoka a is a small town close to the east coast and en route to the Waipi o Valley 15 miles beyond Waimea. This is a quiet, charming tropical plantation village. Waipi o Wayside Inn (one room) Stay as the guest of Jacqueline Horne in this small B&B set above the Hamakua coast. Built in 1932 for a plantation superintendent, the Inn retains a real sense of history and the bedrooms feature hand-made Hawaiian quilts, antique furniture and original artwork. NOTE: The property is 2½ miles outside of Honoka a but the manager will drive you to dinner by prior arrangement. This is the tropical side of the island with humidity and tropical fauna so the coquí frogs can be quite loud at night. Stay in Waimea if you want to be in a cowboy town, eat at Merriman s Restaurant and don t mind cooler temperatures. Stay in Honoka a for access to the Waipi o Valley, a more tropical vibe and warmer temperatures. US & Canada: Other Page: 11

12 Accommodation Kailua-Kona Kona Beach Hotel Kona Seaside Hotel This Courtyard Marriot is centrally located on the waterfront; within walking distance of many of the town s restaurants and stores. The rooms have minimalist décor with some simple Hawaiian touches yet there s no getting away from the fact that the hotel is in two, somewhat drab, concrete blocks. That said, the hotel has a pleasant white-sand beach (where the Hawaii Ironman starts) and King Kamehameha s private temple is in the grounds. A pleasant hotel in a very central location just around the corner from the Kona Beach Hotel. The downside is that the building is quite dated and service, while adequate, can sometimes be a little perfunctory. Think well-located, comfortable motel rather than luxurious resort! 13 Accommodation Near Captain Cook Captain Cook is a very small town with a cluster of B&Bs above Kealakekua Bay. If you d prefer to stay at one of the Kona Resorts, let us know and we ll rework the itinerary to allow you to visit Captain Cook and Kealakekua Bay on a day ride. Horizon Guest House Ka awa Loa Plantation The Horizon Guest House is an elegant inn situated at 1,100 feet on the slopes of Mauna Loa. The inn is set on 40 acres of sloping pasture lands with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. The property includes an Infinity Edge swimming pool and Jacuzzi. Your host, Clem, is extremely welcoming and well informed. NOTE: It is 10 miles from the guesthouse to the center of Captain Cook. This charming guesthouse-retreat is also a start-up coffee farm. The 5-acre estate is nestled in tropical surroundings at 1,200 feet just below the town of Captain Cook. Ownermanagers Greg and Michael are gracious hosts and make a great breakfast. The building is a classic Hawaiian plantation home. NOTE: It is 1½ miles uphill to the center of Captain Cook. NOTE: It is not practical to walk from the accommodation in Captain Cook to a restaurant. As with many aspects of our trips, choose which best suits you. Standard Road Bike Our standard road bikes are a racing style bike with drop handlebars. A typical bike in this category is the Specialized Roubaix with a carbon frame, carbon forks and Shimano 105 componentry. These are great bikes for the hills of Hawaii and will be enjoyed by both intermediate and more experienced cyclists. Premium Road Bike Our premium road bikes are light and fast racing bikes. A typical bike in this category is the Specialized Tarmac: full carbon with Shimano Ultegra componentry. Experienced riders will appreciate the lightness, stiffness and mechanics of these high-end bikes. Bike Shipping If you are bringing your own bike and would like to ship it ahead of time, we would be pleased to arrange for a local bike shop to receive and assemble it for you and then pack it up and return it at the end of your tour. LifeCycle Adventures will collect it from the store and deliver it to you at the start of the trip and take it back to the shop at the end of the trip. While we can make the booking, you would pay the bike shop directly. A typical charge on the Island for receipt, assembly, packing and delivery to shipper is $155 per bike. 16 Prices & Services Optional Extras Extra Guidebooks We supply one set of guidebook, maps and directions per two riders. Please let us know if you would like extra copies of the maps and directions there is no charge for this. There is a $50 charge for extra copies of the guidebook as these are created individually. Transfers from Further Afield Typically, we collect and return guests from/to Kona Airport. However, we re pleased to collect you from other locations on the island. Any west coast locations (from Captain Cook to Hawi, including Waimea), are included in the price and there is a $100 supplement for pick-ups & drop-offs from/to other island locations. Extra Days in Hawaii We can arrange extra days in Hawaii either before and/or after your bike tour including hotel bookings, activities and tours. Popular excursions include whale watching, star gazing Mauna Kea and day trips to the Volcano National Park. Transfers to Beaches or Other Sites If there are beaches or other sites in the area that you would like to visit but do not want to ride to, we would be pleased to arrange a van transfer. A typical cost is $100 for up to four people for a one-way transfer or $150 for a two-way transfer with a turnaround time of up to 2 hours. We can also arrange to have a van and driver dedicated to you for up to a day. For example, if you had a number of wineries you wanted to visit that are hard to get to or on unpaved roads. This service is $50/hour for up to four people with a four-hour minimum. US & Canada: Other Page: 16

17 Other Information Guidebooks & Maps Our proprietary cycling maps now cover over 24,000 square miles, we have 3000 miles of mile-by-mile directions and our guidebooks are written specifically for the pace and intimacy with which cyclists travel. We live and ride in the area and have spent years consolidating our knowledge into these guidebooks, maps and directions. Our aim is to help you explore routes unseen by most people who visit the area. If you live in the Continental US you can choose to have your guidebook shipped to you or to collect it at the start of your tour. For shipping to Canada, there is a $35 charge. 18 Other Information Climate There s no bad time to visit Hawaii! The Big Island enjoys a mild climate year round with temperatures on the coast between 70 F and 80 F. Winter lasts from November through April and is slightly cooler and wetter. However, location is the real predictor of temperature and rainfall. Generally the west coast is hot and dry. It gets wetter the further east you go and cooler the higher you go especially in the evening. Like any tropical island, there can also be windy days. 20 Terms & Conditions Payment A payment of 10% of the total price is required to secure a reservation. Payment of the balance is due 60 days prior to the start of the trip. Booking Form Once your deposit is paid, we will send you a booking form requesting details such as bike rental requirements, dietary restrictions, and an emergency contact. The booking form includes a Cycle Tour Accident Waiver and Release of Liability. A copy of this form can be found at Guests who fail to provide a signed waiver prior to the start of a trip will not be allowed to take part in the trip and the cancellation policy will apply. Cancellation Policy We give a full refund less a $150 administration fee for any trip cancelled over 90 days before the start of the trip. After this date, refunds are made according to the following schedule: From 61 to 90 days: 90% of the full trip price is refunded unless you choose to rebook a trip with a start date within 18 months of the original start date in which case your current payments will be applied to the new trip less an administration fee of $150. From 15 to 60 days of the start of the trip your choice of EITHER a 50% refund or 75% of the trip price applied towards a future trip with LifeCycle Adventures. The latter option only applies when the cancelled trip has been paid for in full. Within 15 days of travel: sorry, no refund. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance to cover you in the event of having to cancel your trip. Unless other arrangements are mutually agreed upon, the failure of a participant to be present at the start of the trip at the time and location specified in this itinerary will be treated as a cancellation and the cancellation policy will apply. Leaving your trip early for any reason will be treated as a cancellation and no refund will be given. 21 Terms & Conditions Itinerary Changes We reserve the right to make route, accommodation, date, and bike model changes as caused by circumstances beyond our control or unforeseen circumstances. If such changes become necessary, we will make like-for-like substitutions to ensure quality is maintained. In the history of the company, we have never cancelled a trip. In the event that we cancel a trip for any reason other than Force Majeure, you will be given a full refund that will constitute full settlement. We will not reimburse you for any personal expenses such as airline tickets, hotels or other travel expenses. We shall not be liable for any refunds or compensation in the event we cancel your booking due to reasons of Force Majeure.
