1 Nippers News Scholarships Silver for Sawtell! Forster Report on offer page 3 page 4 page 5 page 6 october 2017 sawtell slsc Message from the President The season has got off to a good start and we have just completed our second weekend of Patrols, with no major incidents and all patrols being well represented. All the patrolling members I ve met with or spoken to on the beach so far have a spring in their step and look ready for action. Our local community and visitors to our beach are lucky to have so many volunteers from our club willing to spend their time patrolling and keeping our beach safe. While we are a volunteer organisation, we also do have a contractual obligation to meet a minimum requirement for each of our patrols. For this reason it s important that you organise a substitute or let your patrol captain (or our Club Captain Steve Rayson) know if you can t make it to your rostered patrols particularly if you have an award (eg IRB, ARTC) that is lacking in your patrol. PROFICIENCy dates Sunday 1 October 8am Saturday 4 November 8am Sunday 3 December 8am Speaking of IRB we have three newly minted IRB drivers who passed their assessment earlier this month. We often have a challenge meeting the requirement of ensuring an IRB driver and crew are available for each patrol so it s great to have some more qualified drivers and crew to share the load. Congratulations to those who invested the time and effort to gain this award. I d like to thank our local treasure Dennis Meagher for putting us through our paces at a First Aid refresher session run last week. Dennis provided a comprehensive, condensed and very efficient overview of everything First Aid providing demonstrations, relevant examples and scenarios along with his usual injection of dry humour. The annual Manly Nippers camp was held again in the first week of the holidays luckily weather and conditions were good enough to allow activities to go ahead as planned for the three days. This camp is not only a great opportunity for our Sawtell Nippers to build their skills and fitness but also a unique chance to connect with a bunch of city kids, share training tips, friendly competition and plenty of fun and games on the beach with potential to build lifelong friendships. It s also an opportunity for those running the show (i.e. the parents, carers, age managers, coaches) to observe and contribute to some best practice beach, team and event management. It was impressive to see what a well-oiled machine the Manly camp has become they have learned a great deal over the 18
2 years it has been going and it really runs like clockwork. Thank you also to Andrew Martin for running an accelerated SRC to Bronze course for a cohort of Sawtell, Manly and Queenscliff SRC kids over the three days of the Manly camp. It s great to see Marto in action he always makes an effort to connect with his training cohort whoever they may be, this week making use of our new Smart TV for some early morning wakeup tunes. The group was joined by a new club member Iwan Williams who is returning after a 10 year absence from Surf lifesaving, having formerly been a member of a Sydney club. We welcome Iwan and his family to Sawtell and to the Club. Nippers starts next weekend and we look forward to seeing our next generation of lifesavers on the beach in the coloured caps. I know the Juniors committee are delighted to welcome Tiffany Easman to the committee in the role of Secretary. Thank you so much for taking on this role Tiffany we look forward to working with you in the coming season. Another new role to mention is the senior Competition manager role which has been taken on by Sean and Leigh Golding. Thank you guys for stepping up for this. On the competition front - congratulations to our members who just competed in their first Carnival for the season in Forster last weekend and best of luck to those competing at Coolangatta Gold next weekend. Finally just a reminder that the Jaco Golf Day is coming up on Sunday 12 November. This event is run in conjunction with the Sawtell Rugby League club and commemorates Phil Jacobson - a much loved and greatly missed club member. We need a team of people who can help out on the day even if just for an hour or two. Please let myself or Di Clarke know if you are able to contribute your time during the day from erecting tents early in the morning, manning those tents or assisting with the end of day function. Sheena McTackett Message from Club Captain As the President has noted the patrol season has got off to a good start with relatively few hic-ups in the first 2 weeks of patrols. We had one textbook rescue conducted by Pete Dawson in Patrol 2 on a rescue board when a person was blown off shore. We also closed the beach for a while with a possible shark sighting and have had one first aid incident. So far our patrolling members have spent 330 hours patrolling our beach this season. The complexity of tasks which we may be called upon to do while on patrol means that a wide variety of skills are required. The key ones of Patrol Captain, IRB Driver and Crew and Advanced Resuscitation held by a minimum team of 3 Bronze Medallion members are mandated by our service agreement with Surf Life Saving NSW. While some patrols have a significant number of members with these skills others are not so fortunate and have no back-up members with these skills if a rostered member is unable to make their patrol. In this circumstance it is absolutely essential that they organise a substitute with the requisite skills. I m pleased that we have a good number of trained members willing to step up to assist patrols by volunteering or substituting when the need arises. This is especially during school holidays and when there is a competition held elsewhere. As some of you know I have just returned from a holiday which happened to coincide with the IRB Drivers Assessment, Gear Inspection and the first weekend of patrols. I would like to thank all those who undertook the various tasks so competently during my absence. In particular credit goes to Shannon Wilson who was the lead IRB trainer during this year s Driver s course. I m told that all candidates demonstrated their driver s skills very competently on the big surf day of the assessment. In addition I would like to thank Shelley Lantry, the vice club captain, for doing all the text messages and other tasks in the lead up to the first patrol weekend. Our club is certainly in a strong position when we have such a depth of talent and a willingness to step up to undertake various roles when required. Surf Life Saving is starting the process of moving away from paper based patrol logs and incident reports. This transition has begun with the supply of a Samsung Galaxy Tablet Computer to each club in NSW for initial use by patrol captains to sign on and sign off using the Patrol Operations Application on the Tablet. We are currently working out the logistics of storing, charging and use of the Tablet and will hold a training session when this is sorted. Patrol Captains can also use the same application on their own Smart Phone. The full roll out to the paperless system will take a long time and will require systems and processes not yet developed by SLSNSW.
3 Could I remind people to always put the radios in waterproof pouches while on patrol? This is absolutely essential for IRB use. While the radios are meant to be water resistant we have had one instance of water ingress already this season and some of the transmit buttons have jammed due to sand hampering the movement of the button. The pouches will protect the radios and ensure that they are always ready to use and reliable. Message from Sawtell Nippers Steve Rayson Welcome to the Nippers season! On behalf of the JASC we would like to welcome all returning Nippers and their parents and carers, and extend a special welcome to new Nippers and their parents and carers.the season starts on Sunday 8 October, and we ask Nippers to be ready for muster at 8.45am for a 9.00am start outside the Clubhouse. 8 upcoming DATES Committee Meeting 7pm 9 October CADets sleepover 14/15 October Surf Club Open Day/ BBQ 15 October branch meeting 7pm 18 October U14 Camp 11/12 November Jaco Memorial Golf Day 12 November bcu coffs tri 3-4 March 2018 During the school holidays, many Sawtell Nippers participated in the Manly SLSC Training Camp. They not only improved their skills in and on the water, but developed their interpersonal skills of working as part of a team, listening, and communicating. A big thank you to Manly SLSC for organising this great event. Communicating with parents and carers is an essential part of Nippers. We will communicate with you via newsletters, , and Team App. Team App is a free application for your smart phone which allows us to communicate important information quickly. Just download the application and then search for Sawtell Surf Club. Another essential part of Nippers are age groups helping set up the beach for everyone to use on Sunday morning. This is everyone s responsibility and a roster has been drawn up and will be communicated each week. Nippers on Set-up for the week are to meet at 815am on the beach, near the club s 4WD. Finally, a reminder to parents and carers that Nippers is run by volunteers. The more people who volunteer to help, the better it is for our Nippers! There are many ways you can help, from assisting or becoming an Age Manager, helping with tents and BBQ s, or becoming an official for carnivals (training is provided). Let us know how you can help! Accordingly if any member has an issue with individual names or photos appearing in any media or social media platform they must notify the Club immediately. Further the Club advises any member posting unofficial photos on Facebook, Instagram and the like that they must ensure all members in such image have consented to its publication. 6 Report on Forster Carnival On the weekend we had 9 Junior Nippers and 8 Senior competitors from our club travel to Forster for the Weekend of Surf Carnival. This is a very competitive carnival with many state winners competing. On Saturday two of our nippers placed in the top 6 in the Iron event, Aidan Carey and Aidan Blaxland. This was an endurance Iron event, all legs of this event were much longer than normal. After the Iron event our nippers lined up for their Board Relays. Our U10 s (Aidan Carey and Maddison O Leary) were very lucky to have a nipper from Cronulla help them out to make a team and they placed an impressive 5th. Patrick Carey competed in the U12 Board Relay and backed it up with an U13 Board Relay showing great team spirit. Every nipper who attended competed in a Board Relay. We had two teams in the U15 Board Relay, the teams were very closely matched throughout this event with sisters Orla and Aiofe Carey in a very close run off to the finish line with team Aidan, Orla and Libby Waugh taking the honours (these teams placed 7th and 8th overall). Aidan C, Maddison, Patrick and Aidan B finished in the top 6 of the swim event whilst Aidan C, Maddison and Aidan B also came in the top 6 for their Board event. All competitors attending competed in the Taplin (one swims, one boards). Three of our teams placed in the top 6, Maddison and Aidan C, Patrick and Jenson O Leary and Aidan B and Orla. Maddison and Orla also placed well in the flags. A highlight of the weekend was when our nippers lined up to represent our club in the march past colour challenge. This was just for fun and some had never marched before. It is great to see so much team spirit and friendships that are made with other Nippers from other clubs. Congratulations to all our nippers for representing our club and to the parents for their support. atmosphere, and are looking at returning next year. The weather was fantastic for both days. Some stand out results from the weekend were Lachlan Golding coming 5th in the U17 board, then backing it up with a 6th in the open board. Abbie McConnachie had a fantastic ski with a 4th place finish. Leigh Golding also had a great board race with a 7th place. I m not allowed to put an age group for that one sorry... The U15 girls all had solid results, and should be congratulated for getting the March Past organised in which they came 4th. Anyone thinking of putting this one on their calendar for next year I can recommend that they do, as it s the most relaxed carnival I have been to, and very well organised. As attending coach and senior team manager I would like to thank all those who attended, parents and children alike for helping when required and doing your club proud with great sportsmanship and competitive spirit. Please don t forget Hugo Smyth Carnival entries and payment must be made by 7 October 2017 and Cudgen Classic, please go online to register and let me know so officials, water safety and shelter can be organised. Sawtell had 8 seniors representing the club at the Forster weekend of surf. All thoroughly enjoyed the carnival for its relaxed, fun
