7 The Fastest Four In swimming, national records are hard to come by. In fact, swimmers in the state of Hawaii hadn t set one at this level in nearly 30 years. Despite those odds, in early 2012, four young boys from Kamehameha Swim Club set out to do just that. Walk onto the deck of any age group swim meet here in Hawaii and it is hard not to notice the dark blue and white colors of Kamehameha Swim Club. In fact, watch an event and a fair number of KSC caps, emblazoned with the familiar Hawaiian warrior helmet, will step up to the dive blocks, awaiting the start gun. Chances are, KSC swimmers will sweep the podium as well. Why? KSC is the reigning powerhouse age group team in the State. With 20 continuous State Championship titles under its belt, a team 200+ kids strong, and a pair of brothers with a unique coaching style, KSC continues to make its stamp on the swimming world, both here in Hawaii Nei and beyond. Like many swim teams, KSC has gone through cycles. Founded by legendary Hawaiian swimmer Bill Smith, a 2-time Gold Medalist in the 1948 Olympics, KSC both thrived and faltered over the next 50 years. By the time Kevin Flanagan took over as Head Coach in 2000, the team had dwindled to only 11 swimmers. A y e a r l a t e r, his brother John joined him. The brothers provided a much needed jolt of life for a team on the brink of extinction. John and Kevin were not new to the island swim scene. Both had grown up through Hawaii age group swimming and held various state records. Kevin was a sprinter. John, a distance specialist. After graduating from Punahou, the two continued to excel at the collegiate level. Kevin became an All-American at Florida State University and an ACC and School Record H o l d e r. John swam for Auburn University and in his senior year the team won the National title. John then continued his swim career in open water: he became the 10K National Open Water Champion and spent four years on the US National Te a m, securing gold medals at the Pan Pacific Championships and Wo r l d Championships. To g e t h e r, the brothers experiences built a dynamic coaching phil o s o p h y. Within a few seasons, KSC was well on its way to dominance. Over the next few years, the team churned out countless records, titles, and a bevy of wonder kids competing in state, national and international arenas. KSC had established itself as the gold standard for Hawaii age group swimming. And so it was in January 2012, that John and Kevin reviewed their roster of year old boys on the swim team. Generally speaking, a swim coach s mind is wired for numbers: races can be broken down to numbers, to times, to splits. Like all good swim coaches, the two brothers could rattle off the events and times each boy swam with uncanny precision. When the coaches crunched the four boys numbers, they swiftly realized that there was a relay record within reach. Moreover, the coaches knew what kind of talent they were dealing with. With the right amount of training and motivation, their boys had a legitimate shot at breaking the National 200 Meter Freestyle Relay record - 4 individual lengths of an Olympic sized pool in less than 1minute and 37 seconds. It would be a tough feat. Lake Oswego Swim Club, Story by R. Sojot Left to right: Kevin Frifeldt, Naone Ka ikena, Ryan Stack, and Kanoa Keleoaloha photo: C. 8 a Washington State based team, had earned the relay time back in 2009 when high-tech full body suits were allowed. The USA Swimming governing body had since banned usage of them making attempts at a new record all but futile. For both John and Kevin, however, the first challenge lie in convincing their boys that this was something they could do. For most of us, the idea of training six days a week (not to mention the added bonus of 6am morning workouts) is, if anything, a pastime we once submitted to during our high school sport days. And even then our payoff usually translated to more than 24 seconds of showtime. But for Kevin Frifeldt, Ka ikena Naone, Ryan Stack and Kanoa Kaleoaloha, those 24 seconds of showtime is precisely what their 6 six months of preparation and sacrifice in effect boiled down to--one single, glorious chance apiece to surge their team to a National title. To hear John explain it, each boy would have to swim faster than they had ever done before at the chosen meet, the Hawaiian Age Group Long Course Championships held at the Veteran s Memorial Aquatic Center. There could be no false moves. No mistakes. Each boy would have to have a perfect race. The pressure was on. On the day of the meet, John and Kevin felt the familiar twinges of anticipation leading up to the relay event. John likened it to the nervousness he felt before an important race, only this time, he wasn t the one the racing. The coaches gave a simple, straight forward talk to the boys. This was their chance, the coaches told them. Go for it. As various teams assembled behind the blocks, John and Kevin focused on Lane 4 where their boys stood. KSC swimmers lined up along the deck to support their teammates. The announcer s voice called out rough and static over sound system: Swimmers, take your mark. Fifteen year-old Kevin was chosen to lead off the relay. Kevin, a sophomore at Mililani High School, makes the daily trek to KSC s Kapalama Campus site to train with his three relay mates, who attend Kamehameha Schools. Kevin understood the importance of the coaches selection. Out of the four boys, Kevin had fastest flat-start off the diving block. A good start would set the tone of the race. Kevin calls himself a perfectionist- -he doesn t like to finish a workout set badly or end stroke technique work before really understanding the subtle changes his coaches are asking for. So in the moments before he stepped up onto the block, he reminded himself to not over-think the race. When the horn sounded, Kevin exploded off the block and into the water. The die was officially cast. His relay mates gathered tightly on the deck seconds later, Kevin reached the 8 makai ocean lifestyle October/november 2012 wall. That time would be marked as Kevin s fastest 50 meter free time ever. So far everything was going to plan. When Ka ikena stepped up to the block, he already had a feeling they would break the National record--after all, it had not gone unnoticed to him how fast they were swimming in their individual events that weekend. Further, to calm any remaining nerves, Ka ikena did what always does before a race: a short prayer and then a sharpened focus on what needs to be done. Ka ikena admitted that in the past, he relied on powering his way through the water rather than swimming--his large feet allow him to have a extremely strong kick. But for this race in particular, Ka ikena knew that sheer might would not be enough. He would have to be smart and harness his power. When he surged to the wall, his split registered Nearly a second faster than his previous best time. At this point, the crowd s energy began to heighten. All eyes were fixed on the race. For Ryan Stack, the actualization of an even larger goal was happening right in front of him. Ryan started swimming at age two and had joined KSC when he was six. By the age of twelve, he grew increasingly frustrated that while everyone else was getting faster, he had just plateaued. Discouraged and feeling like he had lost his potential, Ryan left swimming to pursue baseball. After some time passed, his love of the water and a 6 inch, 20 lb growth spurt led him back to the pool. His coaches were pleased to have him return. Soon, Ryan realized there was something for him in swimming. And he began to excel. Ryan paced through his established pre-race routine: Listen to some music. Quiet the mind. Remove jacket and pants. Spit in goggles and rinse. Tie suit. Adjust cap. Stretch out the muscles. Jump a bit to warm up. Visualize the race. Stay calm. Like Ka ikena, Ryan had watched his relay mates earlier individual swims at the meet and knew everyone was posting fast times. Standing on the block, Ryan felt good. He was ready. He dove into the water and before he knew it, he was done--his time clocking in at 24 seconds flat. His fastest time ever. By this point, it seemed like the entire world was hanging on a thread. The announcer s voice could barely be heard over the deafening cheers of the standing crowd. Heads swiveled back and forth from the large digital display clock to the swimmers in Lane 4. Coach John and Kevin gripped their stopwatches, furiously calculating the boys splits and trying to calm their nerves. The excitement was almost unbearable. Kanoa crouched primed and ready on the block, the final of the four boys, the anchor. Kanoa knew that Kevin s earlier start had been critical--it built the momentum for each of them to carry through for a strong finish. As the first two relay mates swum their leg, Kanoa had stretched methodically. He had been swimming for a long time now, since he was six, having taken up the sport after watching his three sisters on the swim team. At practice, Kanoa believed in having fun but training hard. On the block, his race strategy was no different: Have fun, race hard. Kanoa knew from his coaches that he would need to go faster than his best 50 meter freestyle time for his relay team to be in contention for the record. His coaches also believed he worked well under pressure. Kanoa zeroed in as Ryan came charging towards the wall. It was coming down to the wire. From the roars of the crowd, he could sense that they had a bona fide chance at breaking the record. Ryan was flying--with only a few strokes left to go. Ryan touched the wall. In that same moment, Kanoa launched off the block with one mission: to make history. With his teammates shouting in a mighty frenzy, Kanoa barreled through the final leg. He thrust his hand to the wall and threw his head up. Everyone on the deck shot their eyes to the display board clock....1:36:37. The Hawaii boys did it. Matching his three teammates, Kanoa had swum faster than ever before and together the four boys had shattered the National Boys 200 meter Freestyle Relay Race Record. The crowd erupted. The boys threw their hands up in triumph. Today, Kevin, Ka ikena, Ryan and Kanoa are back in the pool, training six days a week with renewed dedication. Each still describe the elation of their incredible race as a life changing experience and have set even higher goals. Their excitement is contagious among the younger swimmers on the team and serves as testimony for even more exciting times ahead. For a large portion of the 20th century, Hawaii was a dominate force internationally, producing many Olympic champions. The rest of the world has since caught up and the last Olympic swimmer from Hawaii was Chris Woo in Despite the lapse of swimming in recent years, Hawaii is ushering in new generation of extremely talented athletes ready to put Hawaii back on the map. With the likes of these four boys, the future looks bright. Imua Kamehameha Swim Club! Imua Hawaii!

18 Imiloa s Wayfinding & Navigation Festival 2012 This year's 5th Annual Imiloa Wayfinding & Navigation Festival was a great success! This year, we honored Kaho olawe as a piko, a nourishing life source for Hawai i and its people. Kanaloa, the ancient name for Kaho olawe, is a traditional center for wayfinding and navigation. From this piko emanated a renaissance of culture, identity, and aloha aina, one s love and deep connection for earth, sea, and sky. With every presentation filled to maximum capacity and a constant flow of guests participating in our various activities, the center was alive and bustling with excitement! Starting the day Kalepa Baybayan, Associate Director and Master Navigator, opened with a pule and a star compass orientation. Aunty Pua Kanaka ole Kanahele shared her stories, chants and kuleana of kaho'olawe. The Kukahiko Ohana, one of Maui s ancient families whose genealogical roots run deep within the region of Honua ula and the coastline that reaches towards Kaho olawe, shared how their love and connection to these places shaped their lives and the legacy that they will leave behind for the next generation. The day's presentations ended with a "talk story" from a few of the Early Warriors and Early Voyagers who were instrumental in the Native Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance. The panelists sharing their stories were Emmett Aluli, Walter Ritte, Davianna McGregor, Craig Neff, Kalei Nu uhiwa, Billy Richards, and Kalepa Baybayan. Throughout the day there were other activities to enjoy like traditional makahiki games with na kane o Hale Pa a Kaua. Canoe tours with crewmembers of Hokualaka i were available so visitors could learn various wayfinding and navigation techniques, and visitors were able to watch the documentary Mai Ka Piko Mai A Ho i, Return To Kanaloa. The day marked the official launch of the "Wayfinder s Collection" jewelry made exclusively for Imiloa by Paradisus, inspired by the stars that guide a navigator s journey. The jewelry was spectacular and received rave reviews by those who came in to take home a keepsake of the stars that illuminates their life's journey. Sold exclusively at the 'Imiloa Bank of Hawaii Museum store "Putting on an event like this is just like preparing a canoe and its crew for a voyage," states Celeste Hao Festival Director, It's not the actual voyage and those who sail it that requires most of the arduous work and commitment, it's the preparation and this preparation always requires a community, an ohana, in order to achieve successful landfall." It was evident that the Spirit of the Wayfinder is alive and well and will continue to be so for a long time. So when is the next Wayfinding Festival and what can we look forward to? What we can give you is a sneak peek, it's actually 2 things, one is the much anticipated Worldwide Voyage of Hokule a and two is the long awaited premiere of "Our Blue Canoe", a film documentary that chronicles the epic journey of Pacific Voyagers in a fleet of traditional voyaging canoes across the Pacific. With a message of stewardship for the ocean, both of these initiatives have the same mission, to build awareness about our ocean and how to care for it. At the heart of both missions is a message about connection - connection between people and nature, old ways and new ways, science and spirit. It is human story, told by the people of the Pacific who are contending with the effects of a changing planet in very real ways. These voyages not only represents a reclaiming of our heritage as the finest of sailors, but also, the finest of stewards. Drawing upon the lessons of our past to navigate us into the future, these initiatives are charting a bold new course and steering us into a sustainable future aboard our Blue Canoe, planet Earth. A special mahalo goes out to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs for their support and sponsorship of this year s 5th Annual Wayfinding & Navigation Festival. This award recognizes the work of thousands of volunteers who have participated in this project over the years. The goal of the Sanctuary Ocean Count project is to increase public awareness of the sanctuary and current ocean issues, including threats to humpback whales while also promoting responsible viewing of all marine wildlife. The project offers Hawai i residents and visitors an opportunity to monitor humpback whales in their breeding grounds by conducting a yearly shorebased census during the peak season. Although the census does not claim to provide scientifically accurate results, it serves as a tool to supplement scientific information gathered from other research activities. The count also provides snapshot data as well as information on how whales use inshore waters on a typical peak season day. Since the beginning of the Sanctuary Ocean Count project, thousands of residents and visitors have experienced the unique thrill and excitement of seeing whales and marine life in the sanctuary, said Christine Brammer, Sanctuary Ocean Count project manager. The public s participation in this project has also resulted in a greater level of commitment to protecting the marine environment. Humpback whale season in Hawai i generally runs from November through May, although whales may be encountered in limited numbers during other months. More than 10,000 humpback whales winter in Hawaiian waters each year. The 2013 Sanctuary Ocean Count will be held the last Saturday of January, February and March.
