17 IRIS Mare (the Sea) - Alessandro Puccinelli The Iris Gallery of Fine Art info@irisgallery.net To some extent, the sea has been my guide through life and I think of the ocean as both an example to learn by and a source of knowledge. The presence of the ocean in my everyday life is a balancing factor that helps me reconnect with that internal equilibrium which, as a human being, I often all too easily lose. The sea brings me clarity of thought. Its waves, as described by Jack London, are the knights of the infinite sea army, bearing simplicity, elegance, power and freedom. Inseparable virtues which lead us to a greater and healthier human condition. This thought echoes key points from the Romantic period and from some of its major exponents such as Turner and Caspar David Friedrich. They have been and still remain sources of inspiration in my quest for the infinite, which I already know is unreachable, but even the effort of reaching out to it gives me real and intense pleasure. My relationship with the sea derives from my passion for surf, which has been the single most important influence on my life-choices to date. I was born in Pisa, Italy and currently I divide my time between Pisa and Lisbon, Portugal. Between the two, I have found the right balance between European lifestyle and Nature in its purest form. I manage to blend warm and lively evenings out with friends in the old city centre of Pisa, with days spent with my camera in the salt and sun on deserted beaches of Portugal. The images attempt to capture the sea at different levels. It can seem to be larger than anything else, both empty and full at the same time, similar but never the same, in perpetual movement, always a source of inspiration, a multitude of contradictions to our eyes but which, nonetheless, manage to fit together in total harmony. The elements within the images are few; waves, light, the horizon and either calm or stormy winds.
