An exciting month for the successful Tewantin Noosa Lions Club operation of the Car Parking, Christmas Carols, and Australia Day. Enough has been said about the Car Parking that is now complete with funds returned to the Council. We await the divvy up of funds and the return of good funds to our account. A great project well done to all involved. The Australia Day Event was very successful with full rosters, help from the Noosa Heads and Cooroy Pomona Lions Club, great work by the organising committee for the Citizenship and a successful Local Legends award ceremony. Our Treasurer will no doubt tell us of the financial position but the main aim - Community Engagement was the winner. The raffles run by Lions and Wesley Care were well patronised also. Some conversations with the Noosa Council reps resulted in plenty of food for thought. The new council wants to work with Service Clubs in partnership more frequently and we are well placed to take advantage of this to provide benefit for the Council and our Club. More on that in the future. This week we have the DG Visit, which will be a partner night so please encourage your partner to join us for the night. Jay is organising the details and normal RSVP to John has been organised by Gus through correspondence to Noosa Heads. This is an important meeting for the DG and we should support her on the night. There will be a number of new member inductions, some awards, good fun and a short address from the DG. The Noosa Heads 40th Anniversary is on soon and with our club rearranging our club night to this night we should have a decent roll up. Let us help them celebrate the Anniversary and details of this event will appear in the last Minutes of our Club Meeting hopefully out soon. Web Sponsors, and General Sponsors/Support is a topic that I would like every member to think about A question for you all. Do we go out and get sponsorship or are we happy with the support we get? Soon a survey of what we can do on this will be issued as a starter and I hope it generates some thought from the Members. Lugging tents, toting that bail, and finding water (not by divining) makes you weary at the end of the day so finding alternative ways of preserving our bodies is a good thing. Ian Glew has come up with a Fundraising idea around Running and Sponsorship from local community - Ian will do the running with others hopefully and we get support/ donations from the Community with a fundraising entity named so that we can best benefit. This will take some time to organise and there is no rush, so Ian will be able to fill you in on details of his ideas at a future meeting. The next Quarter will involve us in the Festival of Surfing which will be a great event again I am sure - a week of surfing and serving. A Bunnings BBQ event is allotted to us soon and we know that is fun and worthwhile for our fundraising. The 2014 Convention for Lions in our District will be held in Bundaberg in October. The board will seek some more information and keep you informed and some thoughts re having a bus taking some TNLC members for the weekend and including a lot of fun on the way are being formulated. The organiser and Club have a good reputation in running good functions so we can look forward to a Convention that many of us will want to attend. My last comment is a bit of praise for our PR lady Rosemary, who has developed a submission to go to the Lions organisation seeking selection for the Syd Packham Award in Rosemary s submission is first class and we hope it goes well. Hopefully Rosemary can advise us of the journey from here on. Regards Peter Coming Events:
Please make a note of these upcoming events and support our club by participating. District Governor Delwyn Hallett will visit our club at the dinner meeting on Tuesday 4 th February. This is a great chance to meet the DG and to hear of her vision for the future of the District. Partners are most welcome. Youth of the Year will be held on Tuesday 18 th February. The event, at our usual venue, will commence 30 minutes earlier than usual 6pm for 6.30pm. Please come and support the young people as they make prepared and impromptu speeches. Always an excellent night. Again, partners are most welcome. The next Bunnings sausage sizzle will be on Saturday 15 th February. The Noosa Longboard event will be held from 8 th to 16 th March at the southern end of Noosa Main Beach. A sign up sheet to help in the burger van will be circulated soon. Noosa Heads Lions Club will celebrate its 40 th anniversary on Tuesday 11 th March. This club was sponsored by TNLC and, to support this event, we will cancel our dinner meeting on 4 th March and instead attend the Noosa Heads event that will be held at our usual venue at the RSL 6.30 for 7pm. This project wound up on Sunday 12 th January, and can be declared a success. Thanks to all those members who made themselves available over an 18 day period, some doing multiple shifts. And special thanks to David Watts, Trevor Coad and Paul Beeston who volunteered for the roster to help the coordinator Peter Hallman in the daily opening and closing, handling administration and banking the proceeds. A total of 5479 cars passed through the gates and only one day was lost to rain. The total income is returned to council, and a contracted percentage is returned to our Lions Club and shared with the Camphor Laurel Group led by Stan Ryan. They are the people who are qualified to direct the parking process and who spend long days in the hot sun. If there were any doubt about the value of the Council initiative in opening the Lions Park to cars in the busy holiday period, the gridlock in that area the following weekend would surely dispel them. As confirmed by Alan Jolly (who dived head first into the archives to unearth some facts), TNLC has operated this project since And there is photographic evidence of a rather more youthful Peter Hallman receiving a cheque from Bob Abbot at the Australia Day celebrations in 2005 for our share of the income. Recent Projects Car Parking Australia Day
What a surprise! The weather, though windy, was fine and no transfer to the Bicentennial Hall was necessary this year. The crowds rolled in, the Rotary breakfast was consumed, the ceremonials were undertaken, the music pumped, the stall holders spruiked their wares and the Lions swung into action. Thanks to all who made a contribution to a most successful day. Good to see Keith McDonald out and about. Some of the new Australian Citizens..who were welcomed by a big crowd. Local Legends Ceremony with Carl Beck, Glen Elmes, Joe Juresivic and Bob Abbot. Bunnings Sausage Sizzle 15 th January 2014 This was the first time we had been asked to run a Bunnings event mid week on a Wednesday. It is definitely slower than the Saturday and was about on par with the sausage sizzle we did on the Monday in December. Having said that, the crew of Peter Jack, Cathy Jack, David Watts, May Duncan, Pam McNeill, Peter Orlicek, Trevor Coad, Merilyn Coad, Sheila Glew and Peter Schofield had an enjoyable time producing the quality food we are renowned for. The proceeds were donated to the Finn Smith appeal and the number of donations we received was very gratifying. A gross figure of $890 was reached and the Board resolved to cover the food costs and bring the amount to be donated to the Finn Smith Appeal to $1500. Thank you to all those who assisted on the day. The next Bunnings sausage sizzle is set down for Saturday 15/2/14. Don t miss it! From the Dinner Meetings 21 st January 2014
Trevor and Merrilyn Coad recently visited Peru, and Trevor gave a most informative talk with pictures of their experience. His presentation covered many aspects of the country including its 7 month fogs, its geography and life style which ranges from a subsistence existence to wealthy European style economy. His talk was illustrated by some great photography. As president Peter said in his thank you to Trevor it was like being in Peru without leaving Tewantin. Pictured is one aspect of Peru the reed islands that are gradually built by local residents and serve as a base for their homes. They last about 20 years with constant upkeep. Colin Crisp receiving the Year Round Growth Award on behalf of the Club Trevor describes one of the many superb pics of Peru. Our chip van has a regular place at the annual rodeo organized by Noosa Pirates, their major fundraising event for the year. In appreciation of the efforts of the club, Debra presented a cheque for $440 to the club. Congratulation on the work you put in, Gary, to make sure this event runs smoothly. Chris Pullin was presented with the Membership Growth Pin for the year of his presidency, Gary Dun and President Peter with Debra Lock from Noosa Pirates.
Jols Jottings February 2014 Time For Some Serious Considerations Time flies, Butterflies and bloody great blow-flies. Matt and Kelly Elliot with Jacqui Nichols at a recent dinner meeting. MR Miracles is a foundation established by Matt Elliot and Richard Foggarty. They find/see a worthy cause and donate specifically to that. In Brett's case Matt read an article in the Sunshine Coast Daily about Brett and our fundraiser. Matt and Richard came to Wesley Care and gave him a cheque for $5000, about 2 weeks after our fundraiser, towards his communication device. This donation plus others is part of the pool that together with the fundraiser raised about $14,000. On the 4 th April 1967 Tewantin Noosa Lions Club was chartered, with Ed Summerville voted in as our first President, he was voted in the next year for another term as President. It s time to give serious thought about our fast approaching 50 th Anniversary and how we as a club are going to organise a worthy celebration for this most important occasion to mark fifty years of service to our community and to the many International Lions Clubs humanitarian foundations that our club has generously supported for fifty years. We reach the magic half century on the 4 th April 2017 which by chance is on our usual Tuesday Dinner meeting night. I would like to suggest the consideration of running a Convention in combination with an extravaganza Anniversary Dinner and dance with a live band in April. Let our hair down for once and to hell with the expense!!!! If promoted by the right members, I feel sure we could persuade our local Council to make a contribution, and maybe get our sister clubs to do the catering for such an important occasion as it would be. There nothing unusual about other clubs helping out.
Important decisions are necessary, if we are to consider the lodging of a bid at the 2015 District Convention to hold the 2017 Convention in mid October; probably on the 7 th 8 th & 9 th October or the weekend of the 14 th 15 th & 16 th October. We should make a strong promotional presence at the next District Convention to start the ball rolling. It would give me great pleasure to nominate Peter Schofield for the job of leading the pack as Convention Chairman, and I would like to think Rosemary Luyendyk and Peter and Dagmar Orlicek consider the job of PR and advertising. Dave Watts would make the ideal Convention manager as he has lots of friends in high places. In my experience, clubs chartered by the mother club are expected to be called on to take on many of the entertainment and catering jobs; in fact in most cases they volunteer their help. With this in mind I see Di and Stephen Cooke the obvious choice who would easily arrange an exciting menu for all the Convention caterers. I see Jacque and John Nichols pushing in to get the nod for organizing the entertainment, and who would be better to lead that committee. We need a person of sincerity, sophistication creative imagination, who has a way with words, to organize and chair the vale ceremony on Sunday morning of the Convention. Such a chap does qualify these criteria, its Lion Peter Hallman. What do you think! retire our recent old favourites and use the younger talents of Di O Halloran. Gary Dun would be essential on the Convention committee to organize the catering van fleet. To the younger or newer members this would give you the unique experience to contribute to one of Lions Clubs greatest of rewarding social fun experiences. Your lives will never quite be the same with all the expression of good will and fellowship that abounds from all Convention attendees. With our club s diverse membership skills and special talents, organizing a Convention would be a breeze, providing members talents are known to the committee heads. Tewantin Noosa Lions Club holds a very important position in our District and is looked upon for leadership, holding the position of the largest membership and leader in our larger community, held in high regard by District leaders. With even more effort in promoting ourselves to our Council and other community leaders as an absolute necessity for our communities volunteer services. It s quite obvious the more Council and community support, Tewantin Noosa Lions has only scratched the service of helping those less fortunate than ourselves. Take this aboard and get off your buts, make a decision about running the 2017 Convention here. AJ The importance of a good devoted Convention Secretary. As this is out a few years from now, I think we would have to
