7 HOW TO BE WEATHER SAVVY ON THE OREGON COAST Many people just don t get it about the Oregon Coast. They think it s a good idea to plan their trip for summer when it s most likely to be sunny and warm. The most spectacular and transformative moments you can enjoy on the Oregon Coast have nothing to do with sunny weather and spring is an opportunity to experience them. It offers the perfect time to discover the true character of the Oregon Coast. The lush dampness of the Pacifi c Northwest s coastal rainforest that borders the coastline explodes with fresh green growth and the stunning landscapes are ever-changing with dramatic moments of light and weather. For those who want to truly experience the best of the Oregon Coast in the spring, here are a few tips to make you weather savvy. First, if the weather forecast is for showers or partly cloudy, it s a forecast for spectacular. Sunbreaks between showers or sunsets illuminating clouds can bathe the scenic landscape in the most enchanting scenes of light and color. Let the weather infl uence your activities. If it s raining, hang out in a coffee shop, sample clam chowder or enjoy the scene from your oceanfront room. If you get sunbreaks, head to the beach or a viewpoint. If it s rainy, gear up for a walk in the rainforest. Always keep your eye on the weather towards sunset when even a cloudy day can turn into a memorable sunset. Those who live here know that if you don t like the weather, just wait a few minutes and it will likely change. Finally, don t expect it to be sunny and warm on any visit. It s probably not a problem if you forgot your sunscreen or bathing suit, but don t forget to bring a sweater and your rain jacket. In short, be prepared for any kind of weather conditions. Let the mist touch your face. Watch for wildlife and enjoy crashing waves that will be gone by the time the summer crowds arrive. This is the Oregon Coast at its authentic best. 10 THE NORTH OREGON COAST Some of the Oregon Coast's great scenic viewpoints, lush rainforest hiking trails, historical attractions and quaint coastal communities can be discovered on Oregon's North Coast. Visitors can explore Astoria, the oldest US settlement west of the Rockies; Seaside, Oregon's first beach resort town and very possibly the Northwest's favorite family destination; Cannon Beach, a scenic wonderland and renowned art town; and at least a dozen other small towns on the edges of scenic beaches, rivers and bays. Beautiful natural areas like Ecola State Park, Cape Meares, Oswald West State Park and Cape Lookout offer stunning sights and scenic hikes. You can visit a more than 100-year-old shipwreck at Fort Stevens State Park, walk Seaside's historic oceanfront promenade and explore tidepools at Oregon's iconic Haystack Rock. The region also offers one of the best side trips off scenic Highway 101, the Three Capes Scenic Route.

13 NORTH OREGON COAST TOP STOPS (north to south) ASTORIA Astoria, the oldest US settlement west of the Rocky Mountains, was the first commercial hub of the West Coast due to its strategic position near the mouth of the Columbia River. Today, a riverfront walk offers views of the river, now busy with cargo ships, rather than the sailing ships of the earliest international traders. A restored trolley also traverses the river front, passing working waterfront buildings and old cannery piers intermixed with hotels, pubs and restaurants. The Columbia River Maritime Museum is a top attraction on the riverfront. Victorian homes climb the hillside of Astoria and the top of town is crowned with the Astoria Column, a lighthouse-like structure built in the 1920s offering panoramic views of the entire region. FORT STEVENS STATE PARK US 101 Milepost 6.5 Fort Stevens State Park stretches from the south jetty of the Columbia River south along a sandy beach where you can still see the remains of a shipwreck from over 100 years ago. Encompassing 4200 acres, the Park includes a large campground, a network of nine miles of paved bicycle trails and six miles of hiking trails that allow you to explore forests, lakes, wetlands, dunes and beach. Visitors can explore the military fortifications that served to defend the Columbia River through World War II. A military museum shares the history of the Fort that dates back to the Civil War. 14 COASTLINES LEWIS & CLARK S FORT CLATSOP US 101 Milepost 7.1 One of the top sites of the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop features visitor center exhibits, multi-media programs and a full size re-creation of the fort built by the Lewis and Clark expedition to endure the winter of During the summer and for some other special events, authentically costumed re-enactors offer interpretive programs. SEASIDE Oregon s first beach resort town is known as one of the Northwest s top family destinations. Family friendly shops, restaurants and attractions ranging from a large arcade to bumper cars line famous Broadway street which ends at the beach and the historic automobile turnaround. The Turnaround and Seaside s 1.5 mile oceanfront promenade are top attractions in Seaside and are among the Oregon Coast s most recognized landmarks dating from the 1920s. ECOLA STATE PARK US 101 Milepost 28 A day-use park offering panoramic views of the coast including Cannon Beach, Haystack Rock and other offshore rocks; headlands to the south and the offshore Tillamook Rock Lighthouse. The main viewpoint area offers paved walking trails and hiking trailheads. The Indian Beach parking area offers beach access and additional hiking trails including the Tillamook Head Trail crossing six miles over the headland to Seaside. This is one of the coast s best Gray Whale watching viewpoints during the twiceannual migration. Watch for the frequent sightings of Bald Eagles and Roosevelt Elk too. 17 CANNON BEACH & HAYSTACK ROCK This destination combines small town beach resort character with great nearby natural areas and is known as one of the Northwest s top art towns, home to numerous galleries in this picturesque community. Oregon s famous Haystack Rock sits at the edge of the beach and Ecola State Park is accessed from the north end of town. Haystack Rock is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and is home to the state s most easily viewed colony of Tufted Puffins during spring and summer. The tidepool area at its base is one of Oregon s seven designated Marine Garden protected areas. Culinary delights, inspiring art and Oregon s most famous rock too. OSWALD WEST STATE PARK US 101 Milepost 39 Sky-high scenic views from roadside turnouts offer stunning panoramic views from the edge of Neahkahnie Mountain. A short trail leads to Short Sand Beach and hiking trails extend to the end of Cape Falcon and climb Neahkahnie Mountain. The park encompasses 2484 acres including a 13- mile stretch of the Oregon Coast Trail that weaves its way through the entire park, starting at the community of Arch Cape. MANZANITA Just three miles south of Oswald West State Park, several miles of sandy beach stretch out to the south from the base of Neahkahnie Mountain past the quaint town of Manzanita. Laneda Avenue serves as the main street in town and meanders down to the beach between unique shops and restaurants befitting this artisan-centric beach town. NEHALEM Located along the banks of the Nehalem River, this town is adorned with hanging baskets of brilliant blooms at fun shops and restaurants along the main street. 18 COASTLINES NEHALEM BAY STATE PARK US 101 Milepost 43.8 Campground and day use areas on a four-mile long sand spit with ocean on one side and Nehalem Bay on the other. The park features a forested 1.8-mile long bike path. WHEELER Wheeler is located on the southern shore of Nehalem Bay. Cast a line or drop a crab net into the water from the public dock. Nehalem Bay and the Nehalem River offer kayaking, fishing and crabbing, with boats and crab pots available for rent along the shore. For a more relaxed visit, visitors can enjoy a picnic along the waterfront or at Upper City Park, overlooking the town and river. BRIGHTON Located across the bay from Nehalem Bay State Park, Brighton is a great spot for crabbing, clamming and fishing. In addition to boat rentals, the local marina offers the option to have your catch cooked on the spot for a truly fresh seafood experience. ROCKAWAY BEACH & WAYSIDE With seven miles of beaches and Twin Rocks just off shore, Rockaway Beach offers easy access to its small town beach experience. The historic town with railroad beginnings grew up along the line reaching from Portland to Tillamook in the early 1900s and pays appropriate tribute with a red caboose-housed visitor information center along the highway near easy access to the beach. Visitors can still catch a train here and explore the shores of Tillamook Bay. 20 COASTLINES GARIBALDI An active port and marina, Garibaldi is a small fishing village at the northern end of Tillamook Bay. Visitors can ride the rails along Tillamook Bay from here to Rockaway Beach, charter a boat and go fishing, paddle a kayak out for some birdwatching or enjoy the local museum specializing in the history of this port and mill town. TILLAMOOK Best known as the home to Tillamook Cheese, the Tillamook County Creamery visitor center draws nearly a million visitors each year. At the Latimer Quilt & Textile Center you will find quilts and textiles dating back to Just south of Tillamook, a hiking trail leads through ancient Sitka Spruce and Western Red Cedar along Munson Creek to Munson Creek Falls, the tallest waterfall in the coast range, dropping 319 feet. Tillamook is the northern gateway to the Three Capes Scenic Route. 23 RECOMMENDED SIDE TRIP: THREE CAPES SCENIC ROUTE Southbound: US 101 Milepost 65.7 Northbound: US 101 Milepost 90.3 The Three Capes Scenic Route follows a stretch of coastline between Tillamook and Pacifi c City while the Coast Highway runs inland. The route s top stops include Cape Meares, Cape Lookout and Cape Kiwanda, but also passes through the dune landscape of Sand Lake and along scenic Netarts Bay. From north to south: Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area CAPE MEARES STATE SCENIC VIEWPOINT & LIGHTHOUSE Cape Meares rises 200 feet above the waves offering panoramic views and a short walk to an historic lighthouse. The natural area includes three miles of hiking trails and a mile long walking trail through old growth Sitka Spruce including the uniquely shaped Octopus Tree. One of the coast s best spots for bird watching and whale watching during the twice-annual migration. OCEANSIDE BEACH STATE RECREATION SITE This beach-side parking area offers access to the beach on the south side of Maxwell Mountain with Three Arch Rocks visible offshore. From the beach, a crude pedestrian tunnel through the mountain offers access to the beach on the other side during low tides. In the winter months, this spot is prime for agate hunting. Summer is prime time for beachcombing the tidepools, fi shing and wildlife viewing. NETARTS BAY With opportunities for outdoor adventure and wildlife watching, Netarts Bay is a quiet alternative to busier waterfronts. Protected from the ocean by the Netarts Spit, this seven-mile stretch of water, nestled between Cape Meares and Cape Lookout, is a haven for kayaking, birdwatching, clamming and crabbing. CAPE LOOKOUT STATE PARK A beautiful park with three miles of beach, a large campground and day use area great for picnicking with more than eight miles of hiking trails through lush, old growth rainforest to the end of the cape. CLAY MYERS STATE NATURAL AREA AT WHALEN ISLAND Made up of mixed woodlands, grasslands and fresh and saltwater wetlands, this estuary environment is home to a diverse collection of wildlife and sea creatures. The area and its inhabitant wildlife can be seen from a walk around the Whalen Island Loop Trail that circles the island. SAND LAKE RECREATION AREA With over 1000 acres of open sand dunes, surrounded by forests and the Pacifi c, the Sand Lake Recreation Area is a unique stop along the Oregon Coast. Outdoor enthusiasts can take advantage of the Sand Lake Estuary by fi shing, swimming and hiking; or bring a properly permitted Off-Highway Vehicle to cruise the dunes. Campgrounds are available, but fi ll up fast during peak seasons. CAPE KIWANDA STATE NATURAL AREA This sandstone cape stands in contrast to its neighboring basalt headlands. The south side of the cape is a giant sand dune and climbing to the top offers views of the unique sculpted sandstone landscape, sheer cliffs and crashing waves when the surf is up. The base of the cape features tidepools, one of Oregon s seven designated Marine Garden protected areas. Offshore is Haystack Rock, not to be confused with Cannon Beach s Haystack Rock. BOB STRAUB STATE PARK The park offers beach access, fi shing, picnicking and a horse trail. A trail from the parking lot west takes hikers two miles to the tip of Nestucca Spit. coastexplorermagazine.com 23

25 THE CENTRAL OREGON COAST The Central Oregon Coast invites visitors to discover some of Oregon s top natural attractions like Devil s Punchbowl, Spouting Horn, Yaquina Head and Devil s Churn. Both large and small communities offer unique experiences. Newport s attractions range from beaches to bayfront with two lighthouses, the graceful and historic Yaquina Bay Bridge and the renowned Oregon Coast Aquarium. Lincoln City features miles of sandy shore plus shopping and dining delights. Smaller towns like Depoe Bay, Yachats and Florence are gateways to remarkable landscapes including the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and Cape Foulweather. Hikers will find several miles of trails at Cape Perpetua and sightseers will relish views of the Heceta Head Lighthouse, a sparkling gem in a remarkable setting.

27 CENTRAL OREGON COAST TOP STOPS (north to south) LINCOLN CITY The town of Lincoln City extends along a stretch of coastline covering more than seven miles of US 101 and incorporates several unique districts, once individual communities. The city offers abundant shopping including a large factory outlet mall and attractions including Chinook Winds Casino Resort and the Jennifer Sears Glass Art Studio where visitors can blow their own piece of art glass. DEPOE BAY The small town of Depoe Bay is known as the Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast. The nearby waters are frequented by Gray Whales that linger much of the year in the area rather than migrating north with most of the whale population. Oregon State Parks operates the Whale Watching Center at the south end of the seawall. When tides are right, spouting horns below the seawall put on a show as surging waves are forced through small openings in the lava beds shooting water like geysers up to 60 feet in the air. Depoe Bay is also home to the world s smallest navigable harbor and offers charter fi shing and whale watching tours. Nearby Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint and the Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint on Cape Foulweather are also great places for wave and whale watching. DEVIL S PUNCHBOWL STATE NATURAL AREA Southbound: US 101 Milepost Northbound: US 101 Milepost 133 A short side trip off US 101 at Otter Rock leads to Devils Punchbowl, a unique geological formation. From the viewpoint, you peer down into the sandstone caldron, likely once a sea cave whose CAPE PERPETUA SCENIC AREA coastexplorermagazine.com 27

28 COASTLINES roof collapsed. When surf is up, waves roll into the cave opening, swirl and froth like a devilish brew. The small wayside offers nice panoramic views and a trail leads to tide pools on the north side of the punchbowl, one of just seven protected intertidal areas in Oregon designated as Marine Gardens. YAQUINA HEAD OUTSTANDING NATURAL AREA & LIGHTHOUSE US 101 Milepost The scenic headland reaches a mile into the Pacifi c offering panoramic views, Oregon s tallest lighthouse and access to a beautiful intertidal area. Small offshore islands offer habitat for seabirds and Harbor Seals while Gray Whales are often spotted in the waters, even during the non-migratory seasons. A stairway leads to Cobble Beach and one of Oregon s seven protected Marine Garden intertidal areas, a great place to see purple sea urchins and many other interesting creatures. A second intertidal area, Quarry Cove, offers handicap access. An interpretive center features exhibits on the lighthouse history and the natural and cultural history of the area. NEWPORT The Central Oregon Coast s largest city is home to popular attractions including the Oregon Coast Aquarium and an historic bayfront area that is part working waterfront and part tourist attraction with shops and restaurants. Attractions include Ripley's Believe It or Not, Wax Works wax museum, marine life exhibits and dive shows at Undersea Gardens, charter fi shing and marine life boat tours. The barking of sea lions on the bay front docks frequently resonates throughout the area and the blubbery beasts always draw a crowd. The historic and now trendy Nye Beach district adjacent to Newport s beachfront is another commercial center. The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is located in the Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site on the northwest side of the Yaquina Bay Bridge at the bay entrance, also offering good views of the 1936 bridge, one of the gems of renowned bridge designer Conde B. 31 SEAL ROCK STATE RECREATION SITE US 101 Milepost Seal Rock makes an easy stop for day use exploring. The wayside offers paths and viewpoints overlooking near shore rock formations that are habitat for seals, sea lions and sea birds. The stretch of sandy beach offers access to tidepool areas. WALDPORT Home to crab, clams, salmon and steelhead, Waldport s Alsea Bay is a great spot to catch dinner. Public docks offer excellent crabbing with rental gear and bait available nearby where you can also have your catch cooked. Wildlife enthusiasts can take advantage of bird watching around the bay and outdoor adventurers can grab their kayaks and go for a paddle in the bay. For more information on the bay bridge, check out the Historic Alsea Bay Bridge Interpretive Center, where Oregon State Parks naturalists give summer tours of the bridge, along with scheduled clamming and crabbing demonstrations. YACHATS This small beach resort community makes a great base for exploring the Central Oregon Coast including the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area located just to the south. The Yachats 804 trail is an oceanfront walking trail that connects to a seven mile stretch of beach to the north. Part of the trail parallels a rocky basalt shelf with tidepools and exciting ocean action when the surf is up. CAPE PERPETUA SCENIC AREA Southbound: US 101 Milepost Northbound: US 101 Milepost Enjoy spectacular highway wayside viewpoints for a brief stop or spend the day hiking though diverse scenic landscapes including old growth rainforest, beaches and dramatic rocky shores. The Devils Churn Viewpoint overlooks a deep narrow channel in the basalt headland where waves are channeled with great force, booming and crashing as they collide with the rocks, then raining down as misty showers YAQUINA HEAD LIGHTHOUSE coastexplorermagazine.com 31

33 of ocean spray. At Cook s Chasm, visitors can be mesmerized by the action of the rocky shoreline. When tides are right, waves surge up the chasm, forcing water through a hole in the rock that erupts like a geyser of spray and foam a natural wonder known as Spouting Horn. On the rocky shoreline plateau just to the northwest of the Cook s Chasm viewpoint is Thor s Well, a hole in the lava shelf where water surges out of the opening, then drains back like a hole in the ocean, creating a 360-degree waterfall. In all, the Scenic Area encompasses 2700 acres connected by 26 miles of hiking trails. The Interpretive Center serves as the hub and main parking area. You can hike or drive to the Cape Perpetua Overlook offering a panoramic view of 65 miles of coastline. Tidepool areas can be accessed along the Captain Cook Trail. There are also 10 miles of trails open to mountain bikes. HECETA HEAD STATE PARK & LIGHTHOUSE US 101 Milepost The recently restored Heceta Head Lighthouse sits in an idyllic setting on a beautiful headland. The park features a pretty cove beach, a large picnic area and a half mile trail to the recently restored lighthouse. On the walk to the lighthouse you pass the keeper s quarters, now operated as a bed and breakfast. The viewpoint at the lighthouse is one of the best locations on the Coast for watching whales, sea lions and sea birds. The park also includes Cape Creek and the Cape Creek Bridge, one of the distinctive designs of the famous Oregon Coast bridges designed by Conde B. McCullough. Picture perfect views of Heceta Head and Lighthouse can also be enjoyed just south of the park entrance at Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint, incorporating three small turnouts along the highway (US 101 MP ). SEA LION CAVES US 101 Milepost One of the Oregon Coast s oldest private attractions, Sea Lion Caves has attracted visitors for the past 80 years. It s been a coastal attraction since the 1930s, but today, an elevator whisks visitors down 208 feet to the largest sea cave in the U.S. About 200 Steller Sea Lions crowd the cave during fall and winter. During the spring and summer they are often seen basking on the rocky ledges below the Sea Lion Caves viewpoint. The grounds at Sea Lion Caves offers expansive scenic views hundreds of feet above the surf. FLORENCE A picturesque community on the Siuslaw River, Florence is the northern gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and the city features a small, fun to explore Old Town and port area fi lled with shops, galleries and restaurants. HONEYMAN MEMORIAL STATE PARK US 101 Milepost The park offers a large campground with extensive day-use areas including dune access, freshwater lakes and pretty picnic areas. Hiking trails pass through woodlands, past wetlands and lakes and through dunes. In late spring, native Rhododendrons display pink blooms in the forest understory. OREGON DUNES OVERLOOK US 101 Milepost The overlook makes an easy stop to experience the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area with viewpoints of Oregon s dune country, dune access and hiking. Pathways and viewpoints near the parking area feature scenic picnic areas overlooking dunes with beach and ocean in the distance. A hiking trail leads one mile through dunes to the beach. The overlook area offers wheelchair access to viewpoints. REEDSPORT Reedsport is the home of the headquarters for the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area offering interpretive displays on the Oregon Dunes, maps and information. Old Town Reedsport is just east of the highway and nearby is the Umpqua Discovery Center, an engaging experience for all ages with exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the region. 39 UMPQUA LIGHTHOUSE STATE PARK: Southbound: US 101 Milepost Northbound: US 101 Milepost 217 A small loop road off Highway 101 leads to the Umpqua River Lighthouse and a viewpoint overlooking the mouth of the Umpqua River, dunes and ocean. This is a great whale watching location during migrations and it s not uncommon for whales to frequent the waters during summer and fall. North of the lighthouse sits the former Coast Guard barracks and offi ces, now housing historical exhibits. The loop road also passes a campground and day use picnic area at Lake Marie with a one-mile nature trail circling the lake. NORTH BEND / COOS BAY The cities of North Bend and Coos Bay sit side-byside south of the bay that wraps around the two. Coos Bay is the Oregon Coast's largest city and is an active port in a region busy with ship traffi c, commercial and recreational fi shing, crabbing and clamming. The communities are the gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area for northbound travelers and to the spectacular coastline and State Parks on Cape Arago, one of the top side trips off US 101. The Conde B. McCullough Memorial Bridge that crosses Coos Bay as you enter North Bend from the north is the largest of the designer s fi ve classic bridges built in 1936, stretching 5305 feet and offering expansive views of the bay and ship traffi c on the busy waterway to pedestrians. Dune buggy tours and ATV rentals are available just north of town. North Bend is home to Mill Casino and Coos Bay boasts the notable Coos Art Museum, the Coos History Museum and the Oregon Coast Historical Railway Museum on the waterfront. See recommended side trip to Cape Arago BANDON The beach at Bandon offers other worldly views of rock formations and small islands along the scenic shoreline adjacent to this beach town. MCCULLOUGH MEMORIAL BRIDGE IN NORTH BEND (NEAR LEFT) RECOMMENDED SIDE TRIP: CAPE ARAGO & THE CHARLESTON TO BANDON TOUR ROUTE Southbound: US 101 Milepost Northbound: US 101 Milepost Aside trip off the Coast Highway between North Bend/Coos Bay and Bandon leads travelers to three beautiful State Parks on Cape Arago. Other attractions along the route include the picturesque small fi shing town of Charleston offering charter fi shing and crabbing. The main attractions are the three State Parks on Cape Arago: Sunset Bay, Shore Acres and Cape Arago State Parks. Hiking trails connect the three State Parks offering views of cliffs, coves and the Cape Arago Lighthouse. Sunset Bay features a scenic cove beach framed by dramatic sea cliffs with beach access, picnic areas and a campground. The sheer sandstone cliffs at Shore Acres make for dramatic views of crashing surf from viewpoints, paved walkways and hiking trails. The park is the former estate of pioneer timber baron Louis Simpson and the estate's formal gardens are maintained and are open to visitors. Cape Arago State Park is located at the end of the cape with scenic viewpoints, picnic areas, pathways and access to beach and stunning intertidal areas. 41 Drive offers viewpoints and beach access, most notably the Face Rock Viewpoint and Coquille Point. The rocky shore makes this a great place for exploring tide pools and bird watching. A charming Old Town area is adjacent to Bandon s riverfront boardwalk and public dock, popular with recreational crabbers. A short trip north of Bandon offers access to the Coquille River Lighthouse in Bullards Beach State Park. CAPE BLANCO STATE PARK & LIGHTHOUSE US 101 Milepost Just a fi ve-mile side trip off the Coast Highway, the beautiful Cape Blanco Lighthouse is set in a commanding position on Oregon s westernmost point of land. The Park features a campground and over eight miles of hiking trails along the headland, through forests and to surrounding beaches. PORT ORFORD The attractions of this small fi shing community include Port Orford Heads State Park with short hiking trails extending along the headland from the Port Orford Lifeboat Station, a Coast Guard facility built in 1934 now serving as a museum. Battle Rock Park offers beach access and interpretive signs about historic Battle Rock at the edge of the shoreline. About 13 miles south of Port Orford is Prehistoric Gardens, a long-time roadside attraction featuring life size dinosaur sculptures along a rainforest trail. HUMBUG MOUNTAIN STATE PARK Day use area: US 101 Milepost Trailhead: US 101 Milepost Humbug Mountain rises 1756 feet from the edge of the shoreline and the park features a campground, forested day use picnic area, beach access and hiking trails including a three-mile trail to the summit. CAPE BLANCO LIGHTHOUSE (TOP), SUNSET BAY STATE PARK (FAR LEFT), FACE ROCK IN BANDON (NEAR LEFT) GOLD BEACH It was the gold rush that originally attracted fortune hunters to Gold Beach, but today the riches include the wild and scenic Rogue River, miles of sandy beach and nearby access to some of the coast s most beautiful natural areas. Among the top attractions is Jerry s Rogue Jets offering scenic jet boat tours up the Rogue River revealing wildlife and some whitewater thrills. Fishing charters and guided river fi shing trips are popular activities and nearby hiking and sightseeing options include a trail to Oregon s largest Myrtle Tree, the Francis Schrader Old Growth Trail and some of the most scenic sections of the coast along the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor just 20 miles south. SAMUEL H. BOARDMAN STATE SCENIC CORRIDOR Southbound: US 101 Milepost 343; Northbound US 101 Milepost This 12-mile stretch of coast offers easy stops at stunning scenic viewpoints, access to beaches and tide pool areas and hiking trails including one of the most beautiful stretches of the Oregon Coast Trail. You can spend a day or a lifetime enjoying the views and trails. Some of the top stops include (north to south) the Arch Rock Viewpoint, Natural Bridges Cove Viewpoint, Whaleshead Beach State Park, House Rock Viewpoint, Cape Ferrelo Viewpoint, Lone Ranch State Park and Rainbow Rock Viewpoint. HARRIS BEACH STATE PARK US 101 Milepost Wide sandy beaches, rocky outcroppings and the Oregon Coast s largest island just offshore make this a great place for bird and marine life watching or exploring tide pools. The intertidal area is protected as one of Oregon s seven Marine Gardens. The park features a large campground and day use areas for beach access and picnicking. BROOKINGS-HARBOR The City of Brookings and its unincorporated neighbor, Harbor, offer visitors access to beach, river and port. Harris Beach State Park lies in the north end of Brookings and Harbor lies southwest along the lower Chetco River offering a full service marina. Just eight miles east of Brookings up the Chetco River, Alfred A. Loeb State Park offers access to a Myrtlewood forest and a one-mile hike to the largest stand of Redwoods in Oregon. coastexplorermagazine.com 41

42 COASTLINES Cape Falcon Trail In Oswald West State Park ASK OREGON: Coast Explorer publisher Gary Hayes answers questions from travelers as Travel Oregon's "Ask Oregon" expert for the Oregon Coast. Question: Can you suggest an itinerary for a 7-9 day Oregon coast trip with emphasis on places to stay that are in great hiking areas? Answer: With 7-9 days, it would be possible to do some of the best hikes all along Oregon's 363-mile coastline. On the North Oregon Coast, I would recommend Cannon Beach as a hiking base. 42 COAST EXPLORER Spring 2018 It's located between Ecola State Park and Oswald West State Park where two days there would allow you to some of the best trails in each. Ecola Point to Crescent Beach and the western portion of the Clatsop Loop Trail from Indian Beach would be my top choices in Ecola State Park. The Cape Falcon trail and a combination of trails including Short Sand Beach, then Necarney Creek, Elk Flats and Devil's Cauldron trails would be my top choices in Oswald West State Park. There are also many miles of beaches that can be hiked south of Cannon Beach, especially if you plan your outing for low tides. I would recommend Yachats as a Central Oregon Coast destination. You might want to hike the Cape Lookout Trail on your travel day south. Two nights in Yachats would allow you to do some of the great trails in the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. You can combine trails to hike the stretch of coastline between Cook's Chasm and Devil's Churn and choose from several rainforest trails ranging from the easy Giant Spruce Trail to several other trails offering extended hikes. Using Yachats as a base, you can also visit the Heceta Head Lighthouse, a short hike from the State Park or turn your visit into a longer hike between Washburne State Park (or the trailhead on the highway just to the south) to the lighthouse. I would choose Bandon as a third destination for a two-night stay and on your travel day south, you could consider the John Dellenback Dunes Trail near Lakeside, the best place to hike the Oregon Dunes away from ATV noise. Bandon puts you nicely between Cape Arago and Port Orford for several other hiking options. Not to be missed is the trail on Cape Arago that passes through three State Parks (Cape Arago, Shore Acres and Sunset Bay). Your options south of Bandon include Blacklock Point (a little tricky to fi nd), Cape Blanco trails and Port Orford Heads, an easy hike with great views. Bandon's beach also offers several miles of hiking with the most scenic stretch between the South Jetty of the Coquille River and the Face Rock viewpoint. I've already accounted for six days of your itinerary, but I would consider Gold Beach for another stay of two nights. The best

43 It s the most beautiful coast in the world. Face it. hiking is to the south including Cape Sebastian and several great options within the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor that lead to secluded coves and beaches. The short hike to Thunder Rock Cove leads to great viewpoints and can be extended to Secret Beach, looping back to the highway side trailhead. Trails also lead to secluded China Beach and cross over Cape Ferrelo. The 12-mile Boardman Corridor can be hiked in its entirety or in sections. If you want to add a ninth night, a stay in Brookings would make it easy to hike the short trail through Oregon's largest stand of Redwoods near Loeb State Park. You can do this hike as an add-on from the Loeb State Park day-use area following the Riverview Trail through an aromatic stand of Myrtle trees before emerging at the road at the Oregon Redwoods Trail. You're making me want to hit the trail. 58 DINING MERIDIAN RESTAURANT OPENS IN PACIFIC CITY Meridian restaurant and bar opened at the new Headlands Coastal Lodge and Spa in Pacifi c City. The lodge and restaurant opened in December. Executive chef Andrew Garrison's specialties include wine and food pairings, developing seasonal menus, foraging, whole-beast butchery, charcuterie and gluten-free cooking. Garrison will develop an extremely seasonal, ocean-to-table menu for Meridian, focusing on Northwest coastal cuisine. The restaurant will source from North Coast fi shing operations, local vendors and Mary s Herb Garden at the lodge. Meridian will also host special beer and wine-focused dinners, drawing wines from the Willamette Valley and brews from Pelican Brewing just next door. The main dining area will seat 40 people with an additional 16 at the open bar. Some of the bar seating will be purposed as a chef s table, with food prepared tableside. The restaurant has sky-high windows with ocean views and an indoor patio lounge with accordion style windows that open completely. Private dining options are available for groups. Meridian, Cape Kiwanda Dr., Pacifi c City (503) Cajun Comfort Food in Lincoln City Chef Etienne Saucier started began his Cajun roots working in Louisiana restaurants before he making his way to Oregon. After dabbling in the food cart scene, he and his wife Anna opened Klementine's Kitchen in Lincoln City's Taft District in October. The eatery serves Cajuninspired comfort with an Oregon Coast twist. Menu offerings focus on local products like Dungeness Crab, Pacifi c Shrimp, oysters and mushrooms. Offering a limited menu and located in a small house, Chef Saucier blends big fl avors, spices and textures into savory dishes like his seafood gumbo. Prepared with a dark roux, the bowl is fi lled with oysters, bay shrimp and thumbsized sections of crab. The chef's hot sauce adds a piquant fl avor and the right amount of zip. Inspired by Pacifi c Northwest landscapes, painter Don Bishop creates canvases of magical scenery in a tonalist style. Infl uenced by the Hudson River School, these paintings capture the light and color qualities of this early impressionist movement in America. 78 LOOKING BACK Easter Lilies near Brookings, Photo by Ben Maxwell, courtesy Salem Public Library 7752 his 1941 photograph shows a fi eld of lilies growing near Brookings. Lily production in the US got started when an American soldier loaded up his suitcase with native Japanese bulbs and headed home to the Southern Oregon Coast. He gave them to friends and family, and by 1920 commercial production began. These new farmers found the narrow strip of coastal soil from Brookings, Oregon to Smith River, California was ideal for ogrowing the showy plants. It was during World War II when import of Japanese bulbs came to a halt that this corner of the Oregon Coast became the largest grower and exporter of lily bulbs. Everyone in Brookings wanted to plant lilies and get a piece of what was called White Gold. Some residents even ripped up their lawns to plant a small crop. Once growers found they could force bulbs to bloom at Easter time, this strip of land became known as Easter Lily Capital of the World. Today the area produces about 90 percent of the world s Easter lily bulb crop. 78 COAST EXPLORER Spring 2018
