The St John Ambulance logo consists of the name of the organisation plus the roundel. It is designed to reflect the whole of St John Ambulance, recognising our heritage by incorporating the eight point cross, and presenting ourselves as a modern organisation that is relevant in today s society. Research previously showed that people didn t understand us. Since its launch in 2007, the new logo has been adopted across a range of vehicles, buildings and publications, helping to give our charity a much needed makeover. Consistent use of the logo will mean that we present ourselves clearly to the public, helping to build a stong, unified brand that make us and our charitable offer instantly recognisable, and encourages the public perception that we are a relevant and professional organisation that they, and we, can be proud of. Using additional - when and Please do not attempt to create your own version of the logo, and never use individual elements of the logo in design work. 4 Basic elements The basic elements, outlined here, explain the fundamental rules and principles for using our logo. To ensure the brand is reinforced, it s vital that everyone adheres to the specifications and instructions provided. Principal versions of the logo Variants of the logo: The difference Secondary versions of the logo Protecting the logo Size of the logo How not to use the logo Positioning the logo Using additional - when and Principal versions of the logo There are two versions of the St John Ambulance logo, each of which can be used in positive (black logo on a white background) and negative (white logo on a black background) form. It s important that the rules for use of the logo are understood, so that we can achieve consistency in its application. The preferred version of the logo is the 3D positive version. This version should be used where possible on all applications: stationery, literature, websites, signage and electronic communications being prominent examples. However, there will be certain instances when printing techniques will not allow for reproduction of the 3D sheen. For these circumstances, a flat or 2D version of the mark has been produced to be used in newspaper advertising, some marketing collateral, such as pencils or umbrellas, and other materials. The logo has been designed to be used on both a white or black background. Any exceptions to this must be approved by the Creative Services team. If you re unsure which version of the logo to use, contact Creative Services. 3D positive 3D negative 2D positive 2D negative Produced by by creative-services@nhq.sja.org.uk St St John John Ambulance Registered charity number /1 Page Page 4

Variants of the logo: The difference A variant of the St John Ambulance logo, incorporating The difference device, has been developed to be used on specific campaign and marketing materials which support our new brand strategy. This variant of the logo is not to be used on general St John Ambulance publications, and there must not be any attempt to recreate it for this purpose. As a general rule, the variant will only be included on national materials any exceptions to this will be made at the discretion of the NHQ Communications department. Principal versions of the logo Variants of the logo: The difference Secondary versions of the logo Protecting the logo Size of the logo How not to use the logo Positioning the logo For the Communications department to consider adding the St John Ambulance logo plus device to a publication or materials, the following criteria must be met: The materials fully support The difference messaging The materials are in line with the new brand strategy Including the logo with the device both enhances and reinforces the brand strategy The meaning of The difference is fully explained within the publication. Should a county, or counties, want to produce specific materials that reflect either the Life Lost campaign or the broader The difference brand strategy, please contact Creative Services, who will consider the case for producing the materials and, if approved, create these materials for availability through the template centre. If you are a design agency producing specific campaign and marketing materials in support of The difference brand strategy, please contact Creative Services directly for guidelines. Any use of the St John Ambulance logo with The difference device must be approved by Creative Services. 6 Principal versions of the logo Variants of the logo: The difference Secondary versions of the logo Protecting the logo Size of the logo How not to use the logo Positioning the logo Using additional - when and Secondary versions of the logo There may be some circumstances when, due to size restraints, the primary version of the logo is unsuitable. Should this happen, contact Creative Services to discuss your requirements. They may provide you with a different version of the logo: the centred logo, or the thin logo. Please note that these are not for general use and can be used only when it would not be possible to use one of the primary versions, such as on thin publication spines or pencils. These must be used only with Creative Services permission, whereupon they can supply you with approved artwork. Please do not attempt to create your own version of these secondary versions of the logo. NB These versions of the logo are intended for use on publications and marketing materials only. Buildings and vehicles must feature the primary version of the logo. Guidelines for building signage and vehicle livery can be found on the brand resource site. 7 Principal versions of the logo Variants of the logo: The difference Secondary versions of the logo Protecting the logo Size of the logo How not to use the logo Positioning the logo Using additional - when and Protecting the logo - the exclusion zone The exclusion zone is an invisible protection area surrounding the logo, indicated by the rule around the logo. Never position any other type, matter or graphic device within the pre-defined exclusion zone. The exclusion zone can be calculated by taking the X height of the letter m in the word ambulance in the logo. This calculation can be applied to all versions of the logo. Size of the logo For specified printed formats, the pre-defined logo sizes must be adhered to. Consistency of logo size helps to maintain a strong visual language. The table shows the specific logo sizes for use on stationery and literature. For bespoke sizes, you can calculate the size of the logo: Z should equal 28% of the width of the document. Calculating the exclusion zone Format Z measurement Stationery Letterhead 50mm Compliment slip 50mm Business card 35mm Press release 50mm Fax 50mm Literature A3 85mm A4 60mm A5 45mm 1/3 A4 (DL) 45mm Produced by by creative-services@nhq.sja.org.uk St St John John Ambulance Registered charity number /1 Page Page 7

How not to use the logo Misuse of the logo weakens its impact. You should not alter the logo in any way and it must always be reproduced from digital artwork. Download the logo. Some examples of how not to change the logo are shown here: Do not isolate the words St John Ambulance Do not isolate the roundel * Do not add sub-brand Do not resize elements * General allowed exception - a secondary signage option is the roundel only sign. Please refer to the Signage guidelines for more information and note that Creative Services must approve any signage that uses the roundel in this way. Principal versions of the logo Variants of the logo: The difference Secondary versions of the logo Protecting the logo Size of the logo How not to use the logo Positioning the logo Do not add county descriptor Do not add graphic elements Do not change the typeface Do not change the type layout Using additional - when and Do not compress Do not change the colour of the logo Do not stretch Do not place the logo on a coloured background without gaining permission from Creative Services Produced by by creative-services@nhq.sja.org.uk St St John John Ambulance Registered charity number /1 Page Page 8

Positioning the logo Y Our aim is to increase the visibility and recognition of the St John Ambulance logo. Y Principal versions of the logo Variants of the logo: The difference Secondary versions of the logo Protecting the logo Size of the logo How not to use the logo Positioning the logo Using additional - when and For publications, presentations, display materials and signage the following rules apply: 1. The logo should appear in the top right hand corner of all St John Ambulance publications, as in the diagram, and should right align with the object or text box below 2. No logo or ident (internal or external) may appear in the top left hand corner* 3. No more than three (including the St John Ambulance logo, product or programme brands and partner or endorsing ) may appear on the front of a publication. For information on using third party, please refer to page 16. Any exceptions to these rules must receive prior approval from Creative Services. * The sole exception are the Prince of Wales s Feathers which have their own rules and can be used, according to the guidelines, on materials relating to volunteering in London. Please remember that for digital publications, as for print publications, the exclusion zone (see page 6) must be protected. Clicking on the logo must take the user to the home page of the site they are visiting. No other logo may appear alongside the St John Ambulance logo on websites. 11 Using additional The purpose of the CI programme is to increase the public s awareness of St John Ambulance and its values, mission and activities by creating a strong visual identity and brand. Using additional - when and Internal terminology, when used externally, confuses the public. Outsiders are not especially interested in whether they are dealing with the Operations directorate or a Marketing department. They think that they are dealing with St John Ambulance as a whole and do not wish to see the internal wiring. Where used internally, internal descriptors emphasise divisions within our organisation at a time when we must increasingly work together to fulfil our mission. It is for this reason that we withdrew the layer of sub-brands, eg. St John Youth or St John Supplies, below the masterbrand (the main logo). such as these, for example, gain their credibility from being part of St John Ambulance and do not add to public understanding of our offer. Therefore, we will not introduce sub-brands based on organisational structure. Product or programme brands Using affiliated Using third party Produced by by creative-services@nhq.sja.org.uk St St John John Ambulance Registered charity number /1 Page Page 11

Using product or programme brands An icon that is attractive to a five-year-old is not necessarily attractive to a 15-year-old. When developing individual products, it is therefore appropriate to consider the needs of the specific audience we are targeting. Visual icons can be produced for use with products or programmes. Current examples include the Cadets volunteering offer or Young first aider resource, campaigns such as the BIG Tea Cosy, or internal programmes such as Customer First. Any product or programme brand must be approved by Creative Services. Using additional - when and Product or programme brands Using affiliated Using third party Produced by by creative-services@nhq.sja.org.uk St St John John Ambulance Registered charity number /1 Page Page 12

Using product or programme brands on publications We need to make sure that our audience is not confused by the inclusion of more than one logo. Using additional - when and Product or programme brands Using affiliated Using third party On posters, letters, the front cover of documents or exhibition panels, and other publications with similar layout, the product or programme brand must appear in the bottom left or bottom right (if it appears at all), and must always be endorsed by the St John Ambulance logo positioned top right. Exceptions must receive prior approval from Creative Services. No logo should appear larger than the SJA logo on a document.* * General allowed exception: if the identity of the product or programme is the main graphic, then it may appear larger than the SJA logo and there is no need for it to appear at the bottom of the document as well, as in the example to the right. Secondary appear bottom left or right Produced by by creative-services@nhq.sja.org.uk St St John John Ambulance Registered charity number /1 Page Page 13

Using product or programme brands on promotional items Leisure clothing On leisure clothing such as t-shirts, the product or programme brand may appear on the front (generally on the left breast) or sleeves. The St John Ambulance logo must appear on the back, and must be the only logo on the back. Promotional items Promotional items, such as pens, mouse mats and mugs, etc. must be considered on a case by case basis and must be approved by Creative Services. General rules as outlined in this document still apply. Front Standard SJA t-shirt design Back Using additional - when and Product or programme brands Using affiliated Using third party Front Back Secondary can be added on the sleeves or breast - the SJA logo remains on the back of the shirt Front Additional secondary logo design Back Produced by by creative-services@nhq.sja.org.uk St St John John Ambulance Registered charity number /1 Page Page 14

Using affiliated Letters and publications must be led by either St John Ambulance or by the Priory, not both, as this is confusing. The Priory Heraldic Shield Using additional - when and Product or programme brands Using affiliated Using third party As the parent charity of St John Ambulance, the Priory is still a separate charity, and it is important that the two are not confused. For that reason, the Priory badge no longer appears on St John Ambulance publications or stationery. The Order of St John logo The Order of St John is the parent charity of the Priory. Occasionally, using The Order logo as an endorser or partnership logo may be appropriate on St John Ambulance publications. If this is the case, it must appear bottom left or right, with the St John Ambulance logo positioned top right. The Order s communications coordinator must give approval for the logo to be used in this way; Creative Services can liaise with them and must also approve the use of this logo. Visit The Order website. The Johanniter International (JOIN) logo Johanniter International (JOIN) is the partnership of the national charities founded by The Order of St John. On occasion, it may be appropriate for the JOIN logo to be used as an endorser logo on St John Ambulance publications, following the guidance in this document. Creative Services can give approval on behalf of Johanniter International and must do so for the logo to be used in this way. Visit the Johanniter website. 16 Using third party Working in partnership Creative Services must give prior approval to third party logo use. 17 positioning the logo and how not to use it Using additional - when and Product or programme brands Using affiliated Using third party Partnership Endorsment Approved endorser Endorsement Creative Services must give prior approval to third party logo use: Publications will be considered on a case by case basis; please refer to Creative Services for advice. The logo of partners which have endorsed or contributed to (financially or otherwise) a piece of work may appear on the inside or back cover of a publication, or, exceptionally, on the front. Examples include International Standards (ISO), The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), the Two Ticks Positive About Disabled People symbol and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) icon, etc. If there are many other then the impact is lost, so consider whether the name of the organisation is sufficient. Where possible, the relationship between St John Ambulance and third should be explained, using phrases such as Supported by, Endorsed by or Reviewed by. A list of endorser with approved descriptive text is included from page 18. NB Please ensure that you advise Creative Services in advance of your inclusion of an endorser logo. In some cases artwork needs to be signed off by the endorsing organisation which can take one to two weeks.
