1 PKWS June 2016 Issue Editor: Carol Mathis PRESIDENTIAL PONDERING I hope this newsletter finds you all well. We have made it to the middle of the year, so hurray to all! This week, we will be meeting at the home of Syed and Zubia Mehdi. If you have not had a chance to see their pond, it is beautiful and full of color. And, if we are lucky, their daughter will play something on the piano for us. The last time we were there, that was a delightful treat. A few things that I would like everyone to be thinking about for the meeting: Bill Botkin has some koi food for sale and would like to know if the club wants him to purchase more at contractor/wholesale prices. We have exhausted our supply of de-chlorinator. In the past, we have purchased it in bulk and then divided it into pound bags. We can do this again if anyone is interested. We will be having a club business meeting at the September meeting. I hope everyone can plan on being there. At the last meeting, there was a strong interest in having a full business meeting to discuss the future of the club and what direction the members want the club to go in. Please start sending me topics that you would like to have discussed at that meeting. Nothing is off the table, but I would like to have a set agenda prior to the meeting so we can hit all the topics that are necessary to be discussed. I hope to see everyone at the Mehdi home for some good food, good friends, and a good time. See you on Saturday. Brannon

6 PKWS June 2016 Issue Page 6 Chloramine Removal Products With many municipal water systems switching over to Chloramines, your present chlorine removal agent can become obsolete overnight! Many areas of the country have plans to switch, or have already switched to chloramines, due to federal guidelines relating to water sanitization. There is no notification requirement regarding any impending switchover, though some water companies have begun educating customers. LINKS TO MORE CHLORAMINE INFORMATION: 1..pdf flyer from a municipal water authority 2. Newsletter describing chloramines 3. From the Water Company s Web Site in html Chloramines are very stable antiseptics that act more slowly than chlorine but remain active for longer in water. Chloramines are generally prepared from chlorine and ammonia (one-quarter to one-half as much ammonia as chlorine) or ammoniac salts. Chloramines are much more stable (lasting weeks) than chlorine and can provide a reservoir or bank of chlorine making it a more reliable sanitizer while also reducing the presence of suspected carcinogenic or mutagenic disinfection oxidative byproducts known as Trihalomethanes (THMs). Conventional Chlorine removers will break the bond between Chlorine and Ammonia leaving free Ammonia. Ammonia is very harmful to gill tissue and damage is cumulitive throughout the life of the fish. While biological processes (filtration) can reduce the free ammonia levels in your aqaurium (if using a conventional chlorine removal product), your fish are still exposed to these high levels of ammonia for the duration of the nitrification process of ammonia-nitrite-nitrate. To insure the lowest exposure levels for your fish choose a water conditioner specifically designed to remove chloramines and not just one which breaks the bond of Chlorine/Ammonia. If the product does not say Removes Ammonia then it is probably only breaking the bond and not removing Chloramines-Ammonia. Also remember, Chloramine sanitized water cannot be aerated or aged to provide fish safe levels as is sometimes done with Chlorine treated water. NewPond is a full function water conditioner similar to Ultimate but in an easy to use and easy to ship dry version. Concentrated with additional slime coat polymers for a superior powdered product. Contains ClorAm-X. Removes Chloramines, Chlorine and Ammonia. Detoxifies nitrite and heavy metals adds an alkalinity booster and ph stabilizer Adds physiologically active electrolytes to reduce stress in fish, plants and invertebrates. Boosts the establishment and performance of biological filters. Replaces lost or damged skin slime on fish. Also being successfully used as a shipping agent due to the effective ammonia removing properties and extra skin slime polymers. Chlorine Removal Products: Conventional chlorine removers. These economically neutralize chlorine at 1 drop per gallon of tap water but does not remove Ammonia. If your water contains chloramines we recommend using Ultimate or ChlorAmX. If you only have conventional chlorine in your tap water then use our #CRSTC - Sodium thiosulfate crystals or liquid #CR-1G as an economical Chlorine remover. Use our Stress Coat for chlorine removal and to neutralize heavy metals and add aloe vera for slime coat replacement on fish. We also carry a crystal form of water conditioner - Start Right which will treat 4320 gallons, removes chlorine, stimulates natural slime growth, neutralizes heavy metals, adds beneficial electrolytes. 6
7 PKWS June 2016 Issue Page 7 Sodium Thiosulfate: The most economical choice for conventional chlorine removal. There is a wide range of dosage recommendations for ST chlorine removal. We base our dosage 3.5 ppm ST / 1 ppm chlorine. Tap water can contain between 0.2 and up to 4 ppm as maximum recommended by US EPA. Most municipal water supplies contain between ppm chlorine. To be sure use chlorine test kit to determine if you are using adequate ST to neutralize the amount of chlorine present in your water. Be aware that your water authority can change chlorine concentrations without alerting you, as long as they do not exceed EPA limits of 4 ppm. If your water contains chloramines then also take note that conventional chlorine removers such as ST will still break the bond of Chlorine and Ammonia but will leave free ammonia which is very harmful to livestock. Use a product such as CloAmX or Ultimate instead. For large bodies of water such as ponds or central systems ST can be used directly in the water at a ratio of 13 gms/1000 gallons. For smaller systems or stand alone aquariums it is best to prepare a stock solution. We recommend a 16% stock ST solution which provides about 1 drop per gallon chlorine removal. Items recommended for all koi keepers: 1. A good test kit - AP1 Pond Master Kit available at local pet stores. 2. An ammonia killer - AMQUEL PLUS is available at local pet stores. 3. Beneficial Bacteria to aid filters and maintain heathly bacteria 4. A quarantine tank - recommend a container of at least 150 gallons. 5. A good air pump and air stones to add oxygen to your pond or your quarantine tank. 6. If you desire to salt your pond a cheap alternative can be obtained at Lowes. Water softener salt in the blue bag. Do not use household salt because it contained iodine. 7. Spring regimen would be to use a produce like Proform C, or a product that contains malachite green and formalin. This product is effective against diseases caused by Ich, Costia, Trichodina, Chilodonella, Oodinium and fungal infections. Followed by Praziquantel, which treats for flukes. Follow the instructions given by the manufacturers. Dr. Sam Young indicated that this was a good all around application that covers most all of the nasty things that can affect your fish. 8. A good net 7
