9 SWIM Swim The event HQ, registration and swim event takes place at the stunning open water lake at Vobster Quay Upper Vobster, Mells, Somerset BA3 5SA. The swim venue is one of the best in the UK, and is used by local triathletes and triathlon clubs for regular open water swim training, open water swim time trials and Aquathlon events. The lake is a spring fed, fresh water flooded quarry, providing high visibility and calm clean water to swim in. Due to its depth, 30-40m in places, and dependant on the weather leading up to the event, water temperatures may be cooler than shallower lakes at this time of year and thus swim wetsuits will be compulsory for all participants. Timetable Saturday 30 th May hrs Venue open and registration 0745hrs 0750hrs 0800hrs 1000hrs Swim briefing by swim start Swim warm up Swim start Last swimmer cut off time The swim will take place in Vobster Quay lake and is over a 750m lap course. This gives swimmers the option to shorten their swim should they feel they need to do so. Swimmers are advised that water temperatures will be below 18 degrees. Swim wetsuits are mandatory and swimmers may wear neoprene hats or a second swimcap (under their issued swimcap) and socks (no swim aids or gloves may be used). Please note that for safety reasons we reserve the right a) to shorten the swim event should conditions dictate and b) to withdraw anyone from the swim that appears to be suffering from the cold or is viewed as not in a state to suitably complete the swim course. Hot drinks and hot showers are available adjacent to the swim course and you are advised to have one and to change into suitable bike kit and warm over garments prior to preparing for your bike start time. 9

10 Swimmers will be allocated numbered swim caps which must be worn and visible at all times during the swim. Failure to wear the allocated hat will result in disqualification. The swim course will be clearly signed with large high visibility TYR buoys and is swum in a clockwise direction with all but one of the turns keeping the buoys to your right. A large swim course map will be on display in registration. Swim Course Large marker buoys mark the swim course. Swim the set course clockwise, keeping the first 3 buoys on your right as you turn and 4 th buoy on your left before turning to the finish or start of your laps around the start buoy. START / FINISH Swim Challenge 750m Swim Course Timing Competitor s swim caps and hands will be marked with race numbers. Your swim time will be taken at the swim finish pontoon before you exit the water. For safety reasons please do not exit the water at any other point than the swim exit and please do not re-enter the water for any reason after you have completed your swim. Open Water Swim Safety It is your responsibility to make sure that you are of a suitably fitness and swim ability to enter the event distance you have chosen and that you are in good health on the day of the swim. You are advised not to swim if you have been ill or seriously injured in the days leading up to the event or if your GP has advised you against taking part in physical exercise for medical reasons. You must wear a suitable swim wetsuit and issued swim cap. During the swim we will have land based spotters, and on water water safety canoeists. If you get into any difficulty or feel that you can t continue to swim, roll onto your back, raise your arm and call for assistance, a safety boat will be launched to provide assistance. For this reason forward facing strokes are only permitted. 10

11 Registration & Briefing All swimmers must register on the Saturday morning before 0730hrs. All swimmers must attend the mandatory swim safety briefing at 0745hrs by the swim start, failure to do so will result in you being withdrawn from the swim. If you register, but fail to start you must report to the event officials prior to the start of the swim. Swim Acclimatisation All swimmers will be required to start in the water. A warm up period is allocated prior to the start to allow swimmers to safely enter the water and acclimatise. This is imperative for health and safety reasons. You are advised to get into the water, relax your breathing, initially swim slowly with your head up and then gradually allow your head to get used to being submerged. Keep moving until you are called to the start line in order that you get used to the cold water and warm up in your wetsuit. Top tip: once in your wetsuit, stand in the shower and fill your wetsuit with warm water so when you start in the cold water your wetsuit already has a warming effect. Swim Start The swim start will be a deep water wave mass start. If you are a stronger swimmer please move to the front of your start wave. If you are less confident, then move towards the back of your start wave and enjoy being towed along by the faster swimmers. Swim Etiquette In the interest of water safety and everyone having a fast and enjoyable swim, we ask you to respect other athletes swim. Please do not deliberately impede or be overly physical with other swimmers around you, it will not help your swim, puts you and others at risk and may result in your disqualification! Cut Off Times For health and safety reasons there will be a total cut off in place for the swim of 2hrs. Please note we reserve the right to change this prior to the event. Any amendments will be published in registration. We also reserve the right to withdraw anyone from the swim that appears to be suffering from the cold or is viewed as not in a state to suitably complete the swim course. Notes: 1.5 / 2.2km swimmers must be 14years or above on race day and be deemed as competent open water swimmers. Swim wetsuits are mandatory for all swimmers. Under 18 s must have a legal guardian sign a disclaimer at registration to swim and have signed proof from a swim / tri club coach that they are competent open water swimmers. 3.8km swimmers must be 18 years or over on race day. Wetsuits are compulsory. Should you require a wetsuit to hire please contact us as we have suits for hire and purchase at Vobster. If you are a less experienced open water swimming we suggest you try and come down on the Friday afternoon view the course and speak to our experienced coaches. You are also welcome to sign in and have a practice swim on the course. 11

The bike events are to be ridden as cycle sportive time trials and as such you must follow the Highway Code at all times. Key junctions and turn points are weel signed however it is athlete s responsibility to slow, signal and stop and ensure that it is safe to proceed at junctions. Athletes may ride in small groups but must remain in close order and beware of other road users. Athletes should always check that it is safe to overtake other riders. Also remember to ride within your own ability. The longer bike routes follow a 90km lapped route. It is important to follow the signage and marshals instructions at all times. The route will be comprehensively signed for athletes and other road users and every junction will be clearly marked through route signage and road markers. There are also a couple of sections with sharp descents and these are marked clearly with large orange signs. Please be courteous to and aware of other road users at all time.
