1 THE SEASON IN REVIEW With a 11-4 (4-4 Big Ten) dual meet record, a seventhplace finish at the Big Ten Championships and a 40th-place NCAA Championships finish, head coach Cathy Wright-Eger led the Boilermakers to one of their most successful seasons yet, all while leaning toward the anticipation of a sad, but anxious goodbye to the Lambert Fieldhouse pool and an exciting opening of the new Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The Boilermakers returned to campus with anxious expectation for the return of senior Gyongyver Lakos who traveled to Sydney to compete in the 2000 Summer Games for her native Hungary. Also, sophomores Lisa Dolansky and Lindsay Lange returned for the campaign with the experience of swimming at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis during the summer. Dolansky swam the 100 backstroke, while Lange competed in the 100 breaststroke. Coach Wright-Eger and the women of the Old Gold and Black looked to their six seniors for the leadership that it would take to improve upon their finish from the year before and that s what happened. The Boilermakers started their dual season with an incrediblely exciting 6-0 run with defeats of Vincennes, Miami (Ohio), Evansville, Notre Dame and Big Ten rivals Iowa and Ohio State. Purdue s biggest accomplishment of the fall season, however, was the defeat of the No. 17 Irish by a score of in Lambert Pool. It was something the Boilermakers will never forget, as the Irish won t soon, either. The week following the Notre Dame meet, Lakos was awarded the Big Ten Female Swimmer of the Week award, as she remained undefeated on the season in both the 100 and 200 freestyle. The Boilermakers headed to Happy Valley with the hopes of posting their fastest weekend yet, as they tapered and shaved for the Penn State meet, in order to gain and keep some momentum heading into the holiday break between the fall and winter seasons of a swimming and diving program. The performances at Penn State did not disappoint. The 200 medley relay team of Dolansky, Lange, Missy Bromley and Lakos recorded a varsity record time of 1:43.04, while Dolansky set a varsity record and a McCoy Natatorium record in the 100 backstroke with a time of Lakos also kept her undefeated streak alive in the100 and 200 freestyle races and the Purdue diving squad produced its best results of the year, as well. In the final event of the evening, the 400 freestyle relay team also set a varsity record and another McCoy Natatorium record with its first-place finish in a time of 3: Purdue headed to the U.S. Open in Auburn, Ala., with Lakos and senior Brianna Reina as the Boilermaker representatives and finished tied for 17th with 33 points. Senior Gyongyver Lakos competed at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney for her native Hungary. In the early signing period, the Boilermakers signed six recruits who the coaching staff believe should bolster the Old Gold and Black s lineup for the -02 season. Jill Collins of Dublin, Ohio, Tracy Duchac of Rapids, Wis., Brandy Keever of Lebanon, Ohio, Christine Leupold of Richwood, N.J., Lindsey Meier of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and Katie Seleskie of Hastings, Minn., signed their National Letters of Intent to swim for Purdue. For the month of November, Dolansky earned her second career Purdue Athlete of the Month honor and was named Purdue s top female athlete. The Boilermakers also received more good news in the form of the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) rankings, where Purdue edged its way into the Top 25 poll for only the second time in the history of the program. The Old Gold and Black continued their Big Ten season with a win over State in East Lansing before returning home to face rival Indiana for the emotional and traditionally very tight meet as the final women s meet ever to be held in Lambert Pool. Purdue fell to the Hoosiers, , as several pool records were set to close out the facility. The Boilermaker women then headed to Madison, Wis., to finish off the Big Ten dual meet season with the annual Quad Meet against Illinois, No. 20 Minnesota and No. 13. Purdue fell to Minnesota and, whileand Lakos suffered her first defeat of the season in the 200 freestyle, but the Boilermakers defeated the Illini for the first time in four years, , to improve their record to 11-4 overall. Purdue headed to the Big Ten Championships with large goals in mind. The Boilermakers finished well, with seven varsity records, numerous lifetime-bests and a points total increase of 69 points over the 2000 finish for seventh place. Four individuals and a relay representated Purdue at the NCAA Championships, swimming in a total of eight events. The Boilermakers brought home some great times and finishes with a relay being named All-American Honorable Mention and sophomore Lindsay Lange finishing 14th in the 100 breaststroke for her own individual All-American Honorable Mention honor. Two more Boilermaker team members kept their seasons alive with swims at the Senior Nationals meet. Sophomore Kim Paradeise and freshman Autumn Sample both participated, while Paradeise swam a lifetime-best time in the 200 freestyle. Finally, to end the season, sophomore Karina Bolanos and Reina competed in international competitions. Bolanos competed for her native Mexico at the Mexican National Meet, swimming in the 200 breaststroke and Reina swam at the Spanish Nationals and finished in the top eight in all three of her breaststroke events. 45

11 RECRUITING AND SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION So you want to be a Boilermaker... Purdue University prides itself on adherence to the NCAA rules and regulations that govern recruiting. Here are a few to remember: 1. NCAA Clearinghouse - To be able to compete in college, an athlete needs to be certified through the Clearinghouse. A form can be obtained through high school guidance offices. 2. Contacts - After July 1 of a prospect s senior year, coaches are allowed to speak with the athlete or her parents face-to-face. If playing in a tournament, coaches are prohibited from visiting with a studentathlete until after her team is finished competing in the tournament. 3. Official Visits - When a prospect visits a campus with all expenses paid by the institution, it is an official visit. A prospective studentathlete may take a total of five visits throughout her senior year, one per institution. A typical official visit would include attending a class and/or athletic event, watching practice, seeing the athletic facilities, taking a campus tour, and meeting with academic counselors along with the coaches and team. 4. Unofficial Visits - Prospective student-athletes may visit a campus unofficially as many times as they desire. They may do almost the same things as on an official visit, but the institution cannot pay for any expenses. 5. Phone Calls - After July 1, a student-athlete may receive one call per week from an institution. The only exceptions are during the week of an official visit or during a home visit. Then, an unlimited number of phone calls may be made. 6. Letters - After Sept. 1 of the student-athlete s junior year, they may receive information about the women s swimming and diving program. is also considered a letter, so one may send and receive at any time. 7. Scholarship - A scholarship can be offered at any time during the recruiting process. The NCAA has granted women s swimming and diving 14 full-ride scholarships. Typically, this funding is divided among athletes. 8. Signing Dates - Women s swimmming and diving has two time periods in which to sign a National Letter of Intent to attend an institution. Early signing period is one week in early November. Late signing is in early April and lasts until Aug. 1, prior to the athlete s freshman year in college. Scholarship Information... In order to be eligible for an athletic scholarship from the Purdue women s swimming and diving team, a student-athlete s times must be sufficient to score at the Big Ten Conference Championship meet. 1st-8th place times: 50% to full ride, depending on how many of one s events fall into that range 9th-16th place times: Up to a 50% scholarship, upon availability Walk-on requirements: Times must be close to scoring at the Big Ten Championship meet A coach s referral The potential to improve Big Ten Results Event 1st 8th 16th 50 Free Free Free 1: : : Free 4: : : ,000 Free Event not swum at Big Ten s 1,650 Free 16: : : Fly Fly 2: : : Back Back 1: : : Breast : : Breast 2: : : IM 2: : : IM 4: : : Free Relay 1: : Free Relay 3: : Free Relay 7: : Med. 12 SPIRIT Boilermakers The year was 1891, and a little-known school that prided itself on educating men and women for productive, utilitarian careers was just beginning to experience success in football. DePauw, Wabash and Butler were the football powers of Indiana in those days. Purdue was late to the game, fielding its first team in 1887 and losing its only game to Butler 48 to 6. By 1891, Purdue had hired two coaches from eastern power Princeton and was on the verge of an era of total domination of opponents. In the 1891 season opener, Purdue traveled to Wabash College in nearby Crawfordsville. Besides coming away with a 44-0 victory, the Purdue eleven, as football teams were known back then, headed back to West Lafayette with a new nickname. In the 1890s, hometown newspapers were considerably more protective of college teams than they are today. After the 44-0 drubbing, one Crawfordsville newspaper lashed out at the Herculean wearers of the black and old gold. Beneath the headline Slaughter of Innocents, the paper told of the injustice visited upon the light though plucky Wabash squad. Wabash Snowed Completely Under by the Burly Boiler Makers From Purdue proclaimed another headline on the same story in the Daily Argus- News. Boilermaker Special The official mascot of the Boilermakers is a replica of a Victorian-era locomotive. Conceived by a Purdue student in the 1930s to exemplify the engineering and agrarian heritage of Purdue, the first Special was provided by a group of alumni working in executive positions in the rail and automotive industries. Boilermaker Special I made its debut on the first day of classes in Then-President Edward Elliott assigned an existing spirit group, the Reamer Club, to maintain and operate the train, as Reamers have always called the Special. Alumni, students, faculty and staff have raised funds to replace the Special as it has worn out in 1953, 1960 and, most recently, in Boilermaker Special V was unveiled on Sept. 25 of the latter year at the Purdue-Notre Dame game. Lafayette semi-trailer manufacturer Wabash National took the lead in providing materials and labor to build the newest Special. The V is appropriate because Special IV, known as the X-tra Special, was actually the fourth faux locomotive produced. Although each version of the full-size Special has been a total remake, elements of V came from I, including the bell, light and whistle. Built to be roadworthy in each of its four incarnations, the Special appears at all games in Ross-Ade Stadium, travels to away football games and is a favorite at events ranging from parades to birthday parties. The Special made the trip to Pasadena to accompany the Boilermakers to the Rose Bowl, although it was shipped the 2,100 miles to southern California. Purdue Pete By the next week, the Lafayette papers were returning the taunts: As everyone knows, Purdue went down to Wabash last Saturday and defeated their eleven. The Crawfordsville papers have not yet gotten over it. The only recourse they have is to claim that we beat their scientific men by brute force. Our players are characterized as coal heavers, boiler makers and stevedores, wrote a reporter for the Lafayette Sunday Times of Nov. 1, The nickname stemmed from the nature of a Purdue education. As a land-grant institution, the college since its founding in 1869 had schooled the sons and daughters of the working class for work that was considered beneath the high-born who attended liberal arts colleges such as Wabash. That same fall of 1891, Purdue had acquired a working railroad engine to mount in a newly established locomotive laboratory. It was one more step in the development of Purdue as one of the world s leaders in engineering teaching and research. For athletic adversaries and their boosters, this specialty in engineering education and the other concentration at the founding of the institution, agriculture served as fodder for name-calling. Over the years, Purdue teams had been called grangers, pumpkin-shuckers, railsplitters, cornfield sailors, blacksmiths, foundry hands and, finally, boilermakers. That last one stuck. Old Gold and Black A boilermaker if ever there was one, Purdue Pete first took the field to cheer on the Boilermakers in Initially, students were chosen to portray Pete because of tumbling ability. In those days, Pete had a papier mache head and a bit of padding but was expected to tumble along with the cheerleaders. Today, Pete s head is crafted in the same aviation technology lab that produced the locomotive body of the X-tra Special. In addition to the head, the four students who portray Pete wear shoulder pads and carry a hammer. Pete got his start in 1940 as an advertising icon for University Bookstore, and he continues in that role. He first appeared outside bookstore ads in 1944, when editors of the Debris yearbook put an adapted Pete on each page. For instance, in the home economics section, Pete had a bucket and mop; for civil engineering, he peered through a transit. Purdue Pete lore is filled with tales of wrestling matches against opposing mascots and muggings by opposing fans. Once, on the way back from Iowa, Pete s head blew out of the back of the Boilermaker Special. It was never found. Pete has changed with the times, boasting more than five makeovers in his 45 years rooting on the Boilermakers. Rowdy While Pete stays on the field throughout Purdue games, his bouncy sidekick, Rowdy, instead saunters out periodically to rally fans, especially children. The 10-foot-tall alter ego of Pete is kept inflated by a batterypowered blower strapped on the student who portrays him. The beaming, crowd-pleasing little boy who loves his Boilermakers so much has been a fixture since Members of Purdue's first football team in 1887 felt that the squad should be distinguished by certain colors, and since Princeton was at the time the most successful gridiron unit, its colors were considered. Though actually orange and black, the Princeton colors were known by many as yellow and black. Purdue gridders opted for old gold over yellow, kept the black, and began flying the colors that endure today. 56
