21 1981 BIG TEN CHAMPIONS Jennifer Hooker won three individual titles (200, 500 and 1650 freestyles) and was part of three championship relays (200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays) at the 1981 Big Ten Championships. The 1981 women s swimming and diving team came out victorious at the Big Ten Championships with a score of 933. The Hoosiers came from behind, including a 53- point rally on the final day, after trailing Michigan through the first two days of the Championships. The Wolverines would finished second behind IU with 901 points. Indiana earned the team victory winning 12 of the 19 individual events and four of the five relays. Theresa Andrews took four individual titles in the 50-yard backstroke, 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke, and 50- yard butterfly. Her times of 27:01 and 2:03.71 in the 50-yard backstroke and 200 backstroke, respectively, awarded her the pool record, Big Ten Record, and an AIAW Qualifying time. Her time in the 100-yard backstroke granted her an AIAW time, and her time of in the 50-yard butterfly was strong enough for the pool record and an AIAW qualifying time. Not far behind with three individual titles was Jennifer Hooker who took victories in the 200 yard. freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, and the 1650-yard freestyle. Her times of 1:51.60, 4:52.31, and 16:43.76 respectively all gave her pool records, Big Ten records, and AIAW qualifying times in each respective event. In other competition, Ann Cremin took the Big Ten victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.32, and Amy McGrath was victorious in the one-meter and three-meter diving competition. Four Hoosier relays took first place finishes. The 200-yard freestyle relay team (Sattelberg, Andrews, Hooker, McGinnis) came in with a time of 1:35.83 awarding them the pool record, Big Ten Record, and an AIAW qualifying time. The trend continued with the 800-yard freestyle team (Cremin, Drake, Greibel, Hooker), and the 200-yard medley relay team (Peterson, Robbiano, Andrews, McGinnis) whose times of 7:33.86 and 3:56.47 respectively were strong enough for the pool record, Big Ten record, and an AIAW qualifying time. The 400-yard freestyle relay team (Hooker, Andrews, McGinnis, Cremin) was also Big Ten champions with a time of 3: Other members of the Hoosier team came out with strong finishes. In the 100-yard breaststroke Lisa Robbiano took first place (1:06.94) for the cream and crimson, while Cathy Aschinger came in second (1:07.19). Both times were good enough for AIAW qualifying times. Earning three of the top five spots in the 100-yard backstroke, the Hoosiers took first, second, and fourth place in this event. Ann Cremin came out on top with a final time of 52:32, while Jennifer Hooker s time of 52:41 earned her second place. Mary Beth McGinnis took the number four spot coming in at 52:80. In the 200-yard breaststroke Theresa Andrews was awarded first place with a time of 2:03.71, and coming in second in the event and for the Hoosiers was Lindley Peterson who touched at the 2:08.11 mark. The duo of Jennifer Hooker and Dianne Griebel took the number one and two spots in the 1650-yard freestyle competition. Hooker finished with a time of 16:43.76 while Greibel Theresa Andrews won all three backstroke events (50, 100 and 200), as well as the 50 butterfly at the 1981 Big Ten Championships BIG TEN STANDINGS 1 INDIANA MICHIGAN OHIO STATE WISCONSIN PURDUE MINNESOTA NORTHWESTERN MICHIGAN STATE IOWA ILLINOIS 222 Amy McGrath swept the diving events as she captured both the one-meter and three-meter springboards at the 1981 Championships. finished at 16: In other action, the Hoosier women took three of the top eight spots in the 200-yard butterfly. Stephanie Porter led the Hoosiers with a second place finish and a final time of 2: Also getting on the board were Sue Drake and Kathy Conroy who finished fifth and eighth respectively with times of 2:09.45 and 2: In the 100-yard individual medley Cathy Aschinger was the lone Hoosier in the top eight coming out with a third place finish and an AIAW qualifying time of 59:50. The 1981 Big Ten championship was not recognized by the Big Ten because women s swimming was not recognized until the following year. Although the conference did not recognize it, the championship definitely helped pave the way for women s swimming and diving at Indiana. INDIANAHOOSIERS 79

22 2003 BIG TEN CHAMPIONS After nearly bringing home of the Big Ten Championship in 2002, the Hoosiers used its superior depth to capture the 2003 title. The Hoosiers only won four of the 21 events, but in 11-of-16 individual events, Indiana placed two women in the top 10 and in 7-of-16 individual events, the Hoosiers placed three women in the top 10. The Hoosiers outdistanced second place Wisconsin, "I'd say I'm most proud of this group's fortitude," said former Indiana head swimming coach Dorsey Tierney after the win. "This did not come easy, and I'm sure that no championship does. Especially with the group that was here last year, and coming back this year, I have a group of eight seniors and that is so unusual to have girls go three or four years like that. The character they possess, especially as a group, is phenomenal." Senior Sara Hildebrand captured titles on all three diving levels and walked away with the Big Ten Diver of the Year and Big Ten Diver of the Championships. She and Cassandra Cardinell went 1-2 in the one-meter event and then 1-5 in the three-meter competition. Senior Lori Matthys joined the duo on the platform as all three placed in the top 5. Hildebrand won the event, while Cardinell and Matthys finished third and fifth, respectively. Hildebrand set Indiana Big Ten records on every level at the Championships as well. With the strong diving performance at the championships, head diving coach Jeff Huber was recognized as the Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year. "I don't know where to start," said Huber. "I was really proud of Lori Matthys. I kind of jumped on her a little bit in prelims because she just wasn't diving up to her level. She responded and hung in there and then, tonight, she really dove well. She finished fifth in a very good contest and was much more competitive. Sara, missing her first dive on platform, yet hanging in there showed a lot of maturity on her part. It wasn't clicking for Cassandra this meet, but she battle and had a solid performance." The Hoosiers lone individual champion in swimming was junior Brooke Taflinger. She won the 400 Individual Medley in a Big Ten and School Record time of 4: Taflinger led a Hoosier contingent of four that all placed in the top 12 of the event. Senior Kristy Martin was third followed by freshman Lauren Lubus, who placed ninth. Senior Maggie Helmers finished her career with a 12th placed finish. In the 200 IM, Taflinger again set a school record with a time of 2: She would win the Consolation finals and finish ninth overall. Junior Meghan Medendorp was Indiana s top sprint freestyler as she earned top five finishes in the 50 free and 100 free. She was the Big Ten runner up in the 50 free and placed fifth in the 100 free. Kostner also advanced to the finals of the 50 free and finished seventh overall. Senior Megan Geers was the lone Hoosier to compete in the 100 breaststroke and she finished 12th. Taflinger advanced to the finals of the 200 breaststroke and ended up placing sixth with a school record time of 2: Indiana also got strong showings from the relays. The Hoosiers top relay finish was the 800 free relay that was runner up to Wisconsin. The group of Gretlund, Colgin, Gorlesky and Fiden swam a school record time of 7: The 200 free relay finished tied with Michigan for third. The team of Kostner, senior Anne Williams, Smith and Medendorp came in with a time of 1: IU s 200 and 400 medley relays finished fifth and sixth, respectively. 35 HOBIE BILLINGSLEY Hobie Billingsley carried the swimming tradition over to diving throughout his 30-year stint by coaching 15 NCAA Champions and 23 Big Ten champions. He built Indiana diving from the ground floor as the first-ever coach of the program. With Billingsley s guidance, IU divers aided the Hoosiers to six NCAA Championships (1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1973). He was also given the honor of being the first recipient of the NCAA Coach of the Year award. The Hoosiers won 20-straight Big Ten Championships from and 23 titles overall. It is easy to sum up Hobie Billingsley, former Indiana Athletic Director Ralph Floyd said. Simply, he s the best diving coach ever. His many, many contributions to his sport have been recognized not only here at Indiana, but on the national and international scenes as well. He s a remarkable coach and a remarkable person. In addition to his collegiate accomplishments, Billingsley also led 115 divers to U.S. Diving national championships and was named U.S. Diving Coach of the Year nine different times including a stretch of seven consecutive ( ). Billingsley also coached the 1968 and 1972 U.S. Olympic team to three Olympic and four Pan American gold medals. He also coached on an international stage with the 1976 and 1980 Austrian teams as well as the 1980 Danish teams. Billingsley was elected to the National Swimming Hall of Fame in There comes a time when there needs to be a changing of the guard, Billingsley said of his retirement in What I ll leave behind is 30 years of great memories. I have been fortunate enough to have been associated with a lot of great people down through the years. I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish at Indiana. Billingsley started his diving career winning the Pennsylvania High School State Diving Championship. He then attended Big Ten rival Ohio State, where he was an impact performer as a freshman, placing first in the Big Ten low board and NCAA onemeter and three-meter events. He went on to achieve "All American" status four years at Ohio State. He went on to coach three gold and three bronze medal divers in the Olympic Games. In 1992 and 1996, Billingsley would serve in the Olympic Games in another fashion, as a diving judge. At the opening ceremony in 1996, Billingsley was given the honor out of all the judges at the games of reading the Judge s Oath shortly after the opening flame was lit. Billingsley began his professional career, joining Bruce Harlan, 1948 Olympic Springboard Champion, a fellow Ohio State teammate, traveling all over the United States, performing diving shows at country clubs. Billingsley would then get into coaching, stopping at various schools all over the United States. He was a physical education teacher, as well as a swimming and diving coach at San Leandro High School in California and Allen Park High School in Michigan. He went on to coach at the collegiate level at Kenyon College and Ohio University. While at Ohio, he was hired as the diving coach, only the second diving coach to be hired at the collegiate level. He then began his illustrious career at Indiana University. During his career, he formed the World Diving Coaches Association as well as the Professional Diving Coaches Association. He finished his career by being named the recipient of the "Sammy Lee" award, which is given to the person who has given the most to diving throughout the world The tradition of Indiana diving started under the guidance of Billingsley and continues under the tutelage of his predecessor, Dr. Jeff Huber. Over his 30-year coaching career at Indiana, Billingsley coached 14 NCAA individual champions, 16 Big Ten individual champions, 10 Olympians, two Olympic bronze medalists and one Olympic gold medalist. 36 HOBIE BILLINGSLEY Over a stretch from , the Indiana diving program dominated not only the Big Ten scene, but the national scene as well. Richard Gilbert, Ken Sitzberger and Jim Henry lead the dominating charge for the Hoosiers. All three would eventually go on to be Olympians for the United States. Gilbert started the trend in 1964 by winning his first NCAA Championship on the one-meter springboard. He also captured both the one-meter and three-meter titles in Big Ten action. In 1965, Gilbert would again capture the one-meter and three-meter crowns at the Big Ten Championships. Sitzberger captured a total of seven NCAA Championships from He won both the one-meter and three-meter competitions in 1965 and Sitzberger won the one-meter in At the Big Ten level, Sitzberger swept the one-meter and threemeter competitions in 1966 and In all, Billingsley s divers earned 101 All-America awards (85 men and 16 women) during his tenure at Indiana. In the late 60s and early 70s, the Hoosiers dominated at the NCAA Championships. In 1964 and 1965, Indiana had four All-Americans on the three-meter and three on the one-meter. In 1966, the Hoosiers had seven All-Americans with three on the one-meter and four on the three-meter. The first two team national championships for Indiana came in 1968 and The diving team was definitely a driving force behind the championships. In 1968, the program produced nine All-Americans, five on the one-meter and four on the three-meter. In 1969, the program swept the top spots on the one-meter and three-meter The Hoosiers went in the one-meter competition with James Henry, Edwin Young and John Hahnfeldt earning each spot respectively. In the three-meter competition, Henry and Young went 1-2 as IU won the second of its six-straight NCAA National Championships. In all, Henry captured five NCAA individual national championships from In 1969 and 1970, he won both the one-meter and three-meter. In 1968, Henry won the one-meter. In Big Ten competition, Henry won four titles, including the one-meter from In 1969, he won the three-meter in Big Ten competition as well. Tom Kenyon in 1976, Niki Stajkovic in 1980 and Rick Bollinger in 1982 all captured Big Ten Championships under Billingsley. Kenyon and Stajkovic won the three-meter while Bollinger was the one-meter champion. Bollinger also won a pair of NCAA titles under Billingsley. He won the three-meter in 1981 and the onemeter in Brian Bungum joined Bollinger as an NCAA Champion in 1981 as he won the three-meter competition. Indiana diving was well represented from at the Olympic Games. In all, 10 Billingsley divers competed in five different Olympic Games with the United States, Mexico, Canada and Austria. The result was three Olympic medals. Sitzberger won the gold medal in the springboard event at the 1964 Games in Tokyo. Young and Henry each captured bronze medals in 1968 in Mexico City. Young won bronze on the springboard and Henry won bronze on the platform. Billingsley also brought Mark Lenzi to Indiana. Lenzi would go on to win two NCAA titles in 1989 and At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Lenzi captured the gold medal in the threemeter springboard event. On the women s side, Billingsley had five divers earn Olympic selections. Leslie Bush came away with the gold medal on the platform at the 1964 Games in Tokyo. Cynthia Potter won a bronze medal on the three-meter under Billingsley s leadership at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. Amy McGrath and Lona Foss each captured a national title at the AIAW Championships. McGrath won the one-meter in 1980 and Foss did the same in The two earned a total of 11 All- America honors between them during their Hoosier careers. Billingsley was active in the organizational side of diving as well. In 1967, he organized the World Diving Coaches Association. Three years later, he established the American Diving Coaches Association. He was also an accomplished author. In 1967, Billingsley authored Diving Illustrated, a text for coaches and divers printed by Ronald Sports Library For 14 years during his career, Billingsley toured the U.S., Bermuda, Canada and the Far East during the summer with his own diving show. He was a renown clown diver and is still one of the top experts in the field. He retired from clown diving and shows in Billingsley s stamp is still well embedded in the Hoosier program. The Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center, which was completed in 1996, honors the builders of Indiana s great tradition and is home to the men s and women s varsity programs. The diving part of the aquatics center is called the Billingsley diving center. He is in every Hall of Fame there is for a diving coach, Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. His record speaks for itself. He is by far one of the greatest coaches in the history of our sport. We definitely want to keep his name in legacy. Naming the pool after him was a fitting tribute to a guy that gave everything to the University. He coached here for 30 years, so when anyone thinks Indiana diving they think Hobie Billingsley. 94 INDIANA HOOSIERS

37 ENDOWMENT Last year, saw the continued success of the Hoosier Swimming and Diving program. A secondplace finish at the Big Ten Championships and a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships demonstrated the desire and determination of both athletes and coaches to continue to be one of the top programs in the nation. This same determination is also shown in the classroom. Of course, such achievement is a great indicator of how your contributions support the continued success of this program, and will lead to another Big Ten Title and a National Championship. Head Coach Ray Looze This support has been provided through our booster club FINS, the Friends of Indiana Swimming. As an organization, FINS helps us provide our student-athletes with the best resources and opportunities available. A $50 contribution, for example, can pay for one swimmer s lane space during our winter training trip. A donation of $200 can provide for the team s training table meals when the dormitories close. A gift of $500 enables us to take a massage therapist to Big Tens, NCAA s, US Nationals and Olympic Trials. As a thank you for your support of FINS, you will continue to receive issues of our Hoosier Times newsletter and team progress updates. Members contributing $100 or more will also receive a copy of this year s Swimming and Diving media guide. Contributions exceeding $200 will also receive advance Big Ten and NCAA ticket information. A Platinum membership of $500 or more includes all of the previously mentioned benefits, as well as recognition at our home swim meets and our banquet. We would like to thank you for your past and present support of The Indiana Swimming and Diving Program, and look forward to your continued support. Dear Hoosier Diving Friends, Sincerely, Ray Looze Head Swimming Coach Indiana University The Indiana University diving program began and flourished under the direction of former head coach Hobie Billingsley. The program has continued to be a force on the national and international levels. In 2004, the program won its 11th straight combined (men s and women s) team U.S. National Championship and sent three former and current Hoosier alumni to the Olympic Games in Athens. In 2005, two IU divers competed in the World Championships in Montreal and three IU divers participated in the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey. The diving program needs the help of those connected to IU to help keep Indiana Diving at the elite level. The coaching staff will continue to work hard and keep the program at the top of the National and International level. The time it takes to keep the diving program at the highest level depends in large part to the contributions made by donors and former alumni. Contributions allow for the program to keep facilities and equipment ahead of the curve and keep IU on the cutting edge. If you would like additional information on asking contributions or if you would like to make a donation to the diving, contact me at one of the contacts below. We look forward to seeing and hearing from many of you throughout the next year.
