Witnesses said he could not have been under the water more than six seconds. Coach Leo Ellison began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and cardiac massage immediately on the pool deck. "But when I made my turn, I realized he was in trouble and I pulled him out. He couldn't have been in the water for more than six seconds," Lydick said. He applied to attend Wake Forest after a visit to the campus last year with his father, who is a baseball coach at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. Shults was not at Wake Forest on an athletic scholarship. He had not had his swimming team physical examination, but he had had a physical exam at home before coming to Wake Forest and had been cleared for physical activity, university medical records said. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. A memorial service was held at noon today in Davis Chapel on the Wake Forest campus.

Dr. George Podgorny, a For syth County medical examiner, said yesterday that Stephen Shults suffered from a disease known as Marfan's Syndrome. The disease, which Podgorny said is not hereditary but most common in people who are tall and thin and who have poor vision and very long arms, affects the aorta, the main blood vessel carrying blood from the heart. Podgorny said that the aorta is very weak in structure and thinner in those suffering Marfan's Syndrome than in most people. Over a long period, he said, the aorta begins "pouching out." Sooner or later, he said, the vessel will burst and the person bleeds to death. That Shults was stricken while swimming was coincidental, Podgorny said.
