2 SEASON OUTLOOK REACHING FOR NEW HEIGHTS TALENTED CAL SQUAD LOOKS TOWARD FUTURE WITH UNLIMITED POTENTIAL In the past several months, California s women s swimmers have accomplished some remarkable feats. Members of the Golden Bears not only made an impact in the world of collegiate swimming with an eighthplace finish at the 2005 NCAA Championships, but current and former Cal swimmers also collected five first-place finishes, six second-place finishes and posted four first-place showings in national and international competition over the summer. Overall, Cal swimmers notched 21 Top-10 finishes at the Summer National Championships in Irvine, Calif., the FINA World Championships in Montreal and the World University Games in Turkey. What our program has proved is that you can have a world-class education and a great college career while continuing swimming nationally and internationally, said head coach Teri McKeever, who enters her 14th year at Cal and was an assistant for the United States squad during the 2005 World Championships. We re doing it with the best in the world. Cal provides as good an opportunity as anywhere in the country. The most notable achievement this summer may have been freshman Jessica Hardy setting the world record in the 100 breast (1:06.20) at the World Championships. Hardy, who graduated from Long Beach Wilson High, notched that time in the semifinals of the event and earned the silver medal in the final. Hardy is the first women s swimmer to enter Cal as a world-record holder since Mary T. Meagher came to Berkeley in Cal s talent doesn t stop at world record holders. At the National Championships in Irvine, Cal posted three first-place finishes, the 800 free relay (sophomore Emily Silver, junior Erin Reilly, senior Ashley Chandler and recent graduate Lauren Medina), the 400 free relay (Medina, Reilly, Silver and junior Lauren Andrews) and senior Helen Silver in the 100 back. The 400 medley relay team of Helen Silver, Emily Silver, junior Annie Babicz and Reilly placed second. For an indication of the Bears depth, people need to look no further than the final of the 200 free, in which Medina, Chandler and Reilly participated. Internationally, the Bears didn t miss a beat as well. The FINA World Championships featured Hardy (three silver medals), Emily Silver (bronze) and former Cal great Natalie Coughlin (one gold medal, two silvers and two bronzes). At the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, Chandler and Medina swam on the first-place 800 free relay team, while junior Sherry Tsai, representing Hong Kong, and freshman Lauren Rogers competed in the 100 back. Rogers also earned a gold medal in the 400 medley relay. This is a team with exciting new people joining a group that features a solid core with great leadership, McKeever said. People have done a great job of working hard and have diversified their events so that we have a lot of women who can help us in a lot of different areas. That s what I think is the sign of a good team: when a number of athletes are strong in several strokes. As a coach, it allows you to adjust depending on the situation, the opponent, or the time of year. The Bears finished the season with a 9-2 dual meet record, a thirdplace showing at the Pac-10 Championships and an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. At the Pac-10 meet in Federal Way, Wash., Cal claimed one relay and two individual titles. The Bears defended their 800 free relay title with the help of Chandler, Reilly, Emily Silver and Medina, while Babicz (100 breast, 1:01.12) and Emily Silver (200 free, 1:46.71) each took home a conference title. The Bears also posted eight Top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships. As good as all of those results are, McKeever sees the potential for the Bears to reach even higher heights. The biggest thing about this team is their tremendous potential, said McKeever, who has amassed a dual meet record in her 13 seasons with Cal. It s our job to maximize that potential. That s what will be exciting, bringing the talent and the potential to fruition. And when we re done, there s a result that everyone s proud of. 3 FREESTYLE The Bears are solid in all of the freestyle events and feature several swimmers with national and international experience. Emily Silver, who was named the team MVP last season, will anchor the Bears in the 50 and 100. Also helping in the sprints for Cal will be Annie Babicz, Jessica Hardy, Lauren Andrews, sophomore Kelly Stravers and senior captain Helen Silver. In the 200, senior captain Ashley Chandler and junior Erin Reilly have proven their mettle on the national level, as both were finalists at the 2005 Summer National Championships. Emily Silver will also add depth in the 200. The distance events will be anchored by a strong group of returners, including Chandler, Reilly, senior Kate Tiedeman and sophomores Jessica Cotton and Rachel Ridgeway. Emily Silver is the defending Pac-10 champion in the 200 free (1:46.71). At the summer nationals, the sophomore out of Bainbridge Island, Wash. found success individually and as part of relay teams: 800 free relay (1st), 400 free relay (1st), 400 medley relay (2nd) and 100 free (5th). At the NCAA meet, Silver placed fourth in the 100 free (48.73), fifth in the 800 free relay (7:07.87), sixth in the 400 free relay (3:18.48), and ninth in the 200 free relay (1:31.17). She also earned a bronze medal for the 400 free relay at the FINA World Championships. Chandler swam on the gold medal 800 free relay team at the World University Games last summer and also helped her 800 free relay team take first at the 2005 Summer National Championships. Individually, Chandler was a finalist in the 200 free at that meet. She holds four times on Cal s All-Time Top-10 list 1000 Free (2nd), 1650 Free (2nd), 200 Free (8th) and 500 Free (4th). Chandler finished second at Pac-10s in the 500. Reilly brings solid national experience to Cal s freestyle corps. She is in Cal s All-Time Top 10 in the 200 Free (6th), 500 Free (6th), 1000 Free (6th) and 1650 Free (7th). At the 2005 Summer National Championships, she competed on the first-place 800 free relay and 400 free relay teams. Individually, Reilly took seventh in the 200 free and was a consolation finalist in the 100. At the NCAA meet, Reilly picked up All-American honors for the fifth-place 800 free relay (7:07.87, school record) and was 12th in the 200. Babicz competed in the 50 free at the summer nationals meet and finished 13th in the final. Helen Silver, who has focused on the backstroke events, stepped up for the Bears in the 200 free relay at the NCAA Championships, helping Cal take ninth (1:31.17). Her split was a Tiedeman competed in the 500 (16th, 4:53.40) and 1650 (11th, 16:48.63) at the 2005 conference championships. Tiedeman was an NCAA qualifier in Ridgeway qualified for the 500 at the 2005 NCAA meet after placing 19th at Pac-10s (4:53.99). Andrews provides depth in the relays and was an NCAA participant in the Bears 200 and 400 free relays last year. Stravers notched personal bests at the 2005 Pac-10 meet, with a in the 50 free and a in the 100. BREASTSTROKE Among Cal s breaststrokers are a world record holder and a conference champion, making the Bears as powerful as any group in the nation in these events. Jessica Hardy holds the world s top time in the 100m breast (1:06.20) which she set at the 2005 FINA World Championships, while Annie Babicz is the defending Pac-10 champion in the 100-yard event (1:01.12). Sophomore Genevieve Patterson scored for the Bears at Pac- 10s in the 100 as well. Freshman Samantha Heath and junior Catherine O Neal add depth in these events. Hardy broke the American record in the 50 meter breast and is the American record holder in the 4x100 medley relay. Hardy was twice named Swimming World s Magazine High School Swimmer of the Year (2004, 2005). Babicz earned honorable mention All-American honors in the 100 breast at the 2005 NCAA meet. Her top time in the 200 is 2: O Neal finished 24th at the 2005 Pac-10s in the 100 breast (1:06.19). Junior Annie Babicz BACKSTROKE Senior Helen Silver leads the Bears in the backstroke events and is coming off an individual title at the summer nationals in the 100 back. Silver, who is one of Cal s captains this season, scored points in the 200 back at NCAAs. Junior Sherry Tsai brings international experience in both the 100 and 200, while freshman Lauren Rogers was the fastest backstroker coming out of high school and competed internationally over the summer. Junior Lauren Andrews is a two-time qualifier in the 200 back at the NCAAs and also swam in the 100 back at that meet in Freshman Lara Pease, who was a three-time high school All-American in the 100 back, junior Nadia Staubitz and freshman Natalie LaRochelle will add depth in the 100 and 200 back. Silver placed third at the summer nationals in the 200. She owns two Top- 10 times on Cal s All-Time list: 100 back (5th, 54.25) and 200 (2nd, 1:55.88). Tsai competed at the 2005 World University Games, representing Hong Kong, and placed first in the B finals of both the 100 and 50 back. At Pac- 10s, Tsai finished eighth in both the 100 back (55.56) and 200 back (2:00.68). Andrews top times include a 2:00.20 in the 200 (2005 Pac-10s ) and in the 100 (2005 NCAAs). The Bears will be without Emily Verdin this season as she recovers from hip surgery. In 2005, Verdin finished 15th in the 200 back at the NCAA meet and set personal best in the 100 back there as well (55.13). BUTTERFLY Sophomore Leann Toomey has developed into a reliable force in the sprint butterfly events. Annie Babicz, Erin Reilly, Rachel Ridgeway add strength in these events as they bring NCAA and Pac-10 success. Toomey collected All-American honors after helping the 400 Medley Relay team place eighth at the NCAA meet (3:40.70). At the 2005 Pac-10 Championships, Toomey finished seventh in the 100 fly and 12th in the 200 fly, and in the relays, Toomey helped Cal s 400 Medley team take third in 3: Reilly is a viable option for either the 100 or 200 fly having earned honorable mention All-American honors in the 200m fly at the 2004 NCAA GOLDEN BEAR WOMEN S SWIMMING & DIVING MEDIA GUIDE 3

Babicz finished ninth in the 100 fly at the 2005 Pac-10 Championships. Junior Nadia Staubitz will provide depth for the Bears in the 100 fly. INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY In 2005, Helen Silver posted the fifth-fastest time on Cal's all-time list in the 200 IM (1:59.93) at the Pac-10 meet, which was good for fourth place at the conference championships. Sherry Tsai has also proven to be a strong IM swimmer, holding the Bears second-fastest times in both the 200 (2:01.41) and 400 (4:22.21) from last season. Freshman Natalie LaRochelle brings national experience to the Bears. She is solid in all strokes and will be counted on as an IM specialist this year. Freshman Jessica Hardy will also be called on in the 200 IM. After solid performances in , Kate Tiedeman and Jessica Cotton will be called on for the 400. With Cal s strength across the board, the Bears will see many people stepping up in the IM events. RELAYS Cal has a track record for fast relays, and from the looks of it, this year should be no different. The Bears are stacked with talent, which will provide healthy competition on all of the medley relay teams. In the free relays, Cal lost All-American Lauren Medina to graduation, but the Bears return a solid group that will be helped by a quick crop of freshmen, including Jessica Hardy and Lauren Rogers. In 2005, the 800 free relay team of Emily Silver, Erin Reilly, Ashley Chandler and Medina finished fifth at NCAAs (7:07.87) and also won the Pac-10 title. The 200 free relay of Emily Silver, Sherry Tsai, Lauren Andrews and Helen Silver finished ninth at the 2005 NCAA meet in 1: The 400 free relay team of Medina, Andrews, Tsai and Emily Silver placed sixth at NCAAs in 3:18.48 (2005). The Golden Bears return senior Tara Capsuto, who was Cal s top point scorer at the 2005 Pac-10 Championships, and sophomore Katy Banks. New to the squad are three freshmen, including high school All-Americans Chiara Reese-Hilborn and Drew Mulvey, along with Katelyn Prorok. Capsuto, the team s captain, will rejoin the Bears when she returns from her fall semester during which she is studying abroad in Spain. While in Spain, Capsuto is training in Madrid at the FINA pool with the Spanish national team. Second-year coach Ron Kontura expects the three freshmen to make an immediate impact this season. All three freshmen are tremendous athletes who will have the opportunity to contribute immediately, Kontura said. The building process is beginning to take shape and it should be an exciting year GOLDEN BEAR WOMEN S SWIMMING & DIVING MEDIA GUIDE

5 CALIFORNIA HEAD COACH TERI McKEEVER 14th Year at California Teri McKeever enters her 14th year as head coach of the University of California women s swimming program after making history in the summer of 2004 as the first woman ever to be named a coach of a U.S. Olympic swimming team. As an assistant coach of the U.S. swim team in Athens, McKeever helped guide Cal alum Natalie Coughlin to five medals, including two gold, alum Haley Cope to a silver medal, and the entire U.S. swimming team to 28 medals, including 12 gold. In the summer of 2005, McKeever served as an assistant coach to the U.S. team during World Championship competition. Under McKeever s direction, Cal women s swimming program has become one of the most elite in the nation. In , she led the Golden Bears to an eighth-place national finish and a 9-2 dual meet season. McKeever s teams have finished in the Top 10 nationally for the last nine years. She has amassed an impressive dual meet record (.725) in her time at Cal, and 11 out of the 13 years she has coached in Berkeley, the Bears have notched winning records. Under McKeever s tutelage, eleven different national champions have emerged, while 44 different swimmers have earned All-America honors, and 49 different swimmers have inked their names on Cal s all-time Top 10 list. Among the most prominent swimmers to blossom under McKeever s guidance are Pac-10 Swimmers of the Year, Coughlin ( ), Haley Cope (2000) and Marylyn Chiang (1999). McKeever also coached Staciana Stitts, who became the first Cal woman swimmer to earn an Olympic gold medal since Mary T. Meagher in 1984, when Stitts was a member of the U.S. gold medal winning 400m medley relay at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. While swimming for McKeever at Cal, Chiang won a national title in the 100 back, becoming the first Cal swimmer to win an NCAA title since In 2000, Cope led off Cal s 200m medley relay and 200m free relay that won national titles. Prior to the Olympics, McKeever gained international experience serving as an assistant women s coach on the U.S. National Team at the 2001, 2002 and 2003 FINA World Championships. Her ability to motivate her teams into reaching high goals was shown at both those meets as the U.S. soundly defeated Australia , and the U.S. women took home 12 gold medals at the world championships. Coughlin led the U.S. 400-meter free and medley relays to gold and silver medals at the championship meet. McKeever s great coaching capability has been well noted by her peers as ASCA (American Swimming Coaches Association) awarded her the 2002 Coach of the Year honor. She also won her second Pac-10 Coach of the Year award (2002 and 1999), and earned the George Haines Coach of the Meet Award at the U.S. National Championships in the summer of She served as an assistant U.S. coach at the 2002 Pan Pacific Games in Yokohama, Japan and at the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. In May 2002, McKeever was awarded the National Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Trophy for her outstanding contributions to swimming as a competitive sport and healthful recreational activity. Along with Cal s accomplishments in the pool, the Bears consistently have one of the highest team GPA s in the nation. She has coached 11 different Academic All- Americans and numerous Pac-10 All- Academic selections. For someone that comes to swim here, their Cal experience is to be part of a team and an extended family that is going to support and encourage them, McKeever said. We are looking for athletes who are striving for a balance between excellence in the classroom and excellence in the pool. McKeever, 43, came to Cal after spending five years at Fresno State where she also developed an outstanding program.
