2 Hitting the Century Mark In Tech s dual meet sweep at West Virginia on Jan. 21, head coach Ned Skinner earned his 100th career victory as a head coach at Virginia Tech. The Hokies eighth-year coach has a career mark of at three different schools. Wrapping up the ACC Championships Led by Gus Calado and Scott Beard, who both won individual ACC Championships, the Virginia Tech Hokies placed sixth at the conference championship meet. Calado won the 200 butterfly, and also achieved All-ACC status in the 400 IM with a third-place finish. Beard, meanwhile, won the 100 fly and placed third in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Zac Czaplicki also earned allconference honors with a second-place finish in the 200 free. Tech set school records in the 400 and 800 free relays, which both placed in the top four. We re going streaking Junior Gus Calado has an impressive streak he would like to keep through this weekend. The 5-foot-10 junior has touched the wall first in at least one event over Tech s last five meets. Calado won the 1000 free three meets in a row, as well as the 200 butterfly against Pittsburgh and the 200 free against VMI. He won an ACC Championship in the 200 butterfly on Feb. 25 for his fifth straight meet with at least one event victory. Seniors Rule! In Tech s final regular season meet of the against VMI, all three men s seniors played a big role in the final score. Phil Smith (Richmond, Va.) swam the second leg of the 200 medley relay which placed first in their event. Tom Alberi (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) swam a career-best time of in the 100 butterfly to score a first-place finish in that event. Tommy Evans (Blacksburg, Va.) earned his first event victory of the season in the 100 free by posting a time of Super Sophomores Perhaps the biggest reason for Tech s rise in the ACC standings this season had to do with the bumper crop of sophomores, which seemed to come of age in the second half of the season. Sophomores Scott Beard and Zac Czaplicki both earned All-ACC honors this season and both qualified for the NCAA Championships, while sophomore diver Scott Hudson (Springfield, Va.) as well as second-year athletes Pete Cancila (Broomall, Pa.) and Jake Bova (Roanoke, Va.) scored points for the Hokies at the conference championships last month. The Next Generation The Hokies have signed 10 athletes to NLI s for next season. Adding to the women s team will be Abby Barney (Virginia Beach, Va.), Mary Teresa Boland (Purcellville, Va.), Christine Currier (St. Simons Island, Ga.), Kelly demarrais (Bernardsville, N.J.), Heather Fulton (St. Louis, Mo.), Julie Sablik (Roanoke, Va.), Sara Shapiro (Franklin, Tenn.) and Katie Suhr (Atlanta, Ga.). The Hokie men will welcome Michael Lewis (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Griffin Lutterbein (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) to next year s squad. A New Home On Aug. 16, 2005, The Town of Christiansburg and Virginia Tech Athletics announced that they had reached an agreement for the use of the town s new aquatic center. The facility, which is expected to be completed by the summer of 2007, will house Hokie swimming and diving home meets beginning in the season. Last Season Virginia Tech continued its assault on the national swimming and diving scene with impressive finishes in its first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hokie women placed fifth at the ACC Championships and 30th in the NCAA Championships last season, while the men were fifth in the ACC during the regular season and tied for 32nd in the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Jessica Botzum became Tech s premier first-team All-American, finishing seventh in the 200 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships. Senior Kevin Furlong earned Honorable Mention All-American honors as well. HEAD COACH NED SKINNER Ned Skinner, opens his eighth year at the helm of the Virginia Tech men s and women s s w i m m i n g a n d diving teams with a team that turned heads in their first year in the Atlantic Coast Conference. In 2005, his teams began their assault on the ACC, each garnering fifth place at the end of the regular season. At the conference championships, the women placed fifth while the men finished seventh. He coached Virginia Tech s only swimming first-team All-America, in freshman, Jessica Botzum, who placed seventh in the 200 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships. He and his fellow staff saw senior Kevin Furlong earn honoroable mention All-America honors with a 14th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships. Skinner came to the Hokies after serving four years as the director of competitive swimming at William & Mary. In his last season at W&M, he coached the Tribe women to a second place finish at the ECACs, while the men were fourth of 40 teams. Also, Skinner was named ECAC Coach of the Year. The W&M men s team posted a fourth-place showing at the 98 ECAC Championships and finished seventh in Before his stint at William & Mary, Skinner was the head coach and aquatics director at Central Connecticut State University for four seasons. A 1989 graduate of Louisiana State University, Skinner was captain of the 1988 squad that captured the SEC Championship. Skinner is married to the former Allison Cox. They have a one-year old daughter, Samantha. H 2 OKIE AWARDS National Swimmer of the Week Sara Smith...Oct. 19 ACC Women s Performer of the Week Sara Smith...Oct. 17 Sara Smith...
