Eligibility: The Meet is open to all students 8 th grade through 12 th grade. A swimmer must be in good standing with the school he/she represents. A swimmer must be no older than 19 years of age on the August 1 st immediately prior to the championship meet. No post-graduates are permitted to participate in VISAA events. A swimmer must have achieved the VSIS qualifying time established for the events entered. To ensure promotion of High School Swimming: o Student-athletes must participate in at least half of their team s inseason meets o Waivers may be requested from a committee that consists of: The VSIS Swimming President The Meet Director The Head Referee o Waivers will be allowed in very limited cases, including: Swimmers involved in school sponsored exchange programs Prolonged sickness or other approved medical reason. 5 Entry Rules: Individual Events o Any eligible swimmer who has swum the qualifying time for an individual event during the season may be entered in that event. o Each team is allowed unlimited entries in individual events, but only a team s top 4 qualifiers are eligible for the Championship or Consolation Finals. o An individual swimmer may swim no more than two (2) individual events and no more than four (4) total events including relays. Relays o Each team that has had a relay swim the qualifying time during the season may enter a single A relay in that relay event. o Any swimmer who participates in a relay during the season that meets the State qualifying time is eligible to swim in that relay event at the State Meet. o Any swimmer who has qualified for an individual event, including diving, is eligible to swim in any relay at States. o Each team may also enter one exhibition B Relay in all three relay events, but every swimmer on that relay must have qualified either individually or for an A relay for the State Championship Meet. Exhibition means that the B Relays may not score. o Relays may be entered without swimmers names, but the Meet Host would appreciate a projected relay line up with all entries. o 200 Medley Relay Cards specifying the actual relay line-up shall be submitted to the designated official thirty (30) minutes prior to the start of the session. o 200 and 400 Free Relay Cards specifying the actual relay line-up shall be submitted to the designated official prior to the conclusion of the Women's 500 Freestyle. o Swimmers whose names are submitted on the relay cards must swim that event, in the order listed on the card, unless the Meet Referee allows for a substitution because of injury or illness. o Participation in any relay, including B Relays, will count against a swimmer s event total. 6 Entry Submission and Fees: All entries are due by 6:00 p.m. on the Monday immediately preceding the meet (February 14th, 2011). All entries, including divers, must be submitted with a Hy-Tek Team Manager entry file. No manual or hardcopy entries will be accepted. A free version of the software, called TM Lite, can be downloaded from or (this site also has instructions). Entries must include first and last name, gender, grade level (8 th to 12 th grade) and seed times. Seed times should be actual or converted shortcourse yard times that meet the qualifying standards. Except for relays, all entries are final once they are submitted. Send entries to Meet Director Chris Cook via at vsis@nvms.com. Once submitted, the person who ed the entries will receive a confirmation with an attached list of that team s official entries by 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 15th. It is the responsibility of the person submitting the entries to verify that the entries were received and that they were received accurately. Any errors must be reported to vsis@nvms.com by noon on Wednesday, February 16 th. A Team Information Sheet (enclosed) should be submitted along with your entries. o Please complete the form within this document; then copy and paste it into the along with your entries. The Meet Team Entry Fees: o Men: $168 per men s team o Women: $168 per women s team If the entry fee was not paid to VISAA in advance, the fee should be mailed, with a hardcopy of your entries, to: Coach Jim Koehr, Meet Co-Director P.O. 7 Diving The Diving portion of the competition will be hosted by the elected Diving Coordinator, Mark Busser of Steward School. Mark can be reached at: Mark Busser VSIS Diving Coordinator The Steward School (804) cell All Diving Coaches should make contact with Coach Busser as soon as possible so that she knows who they are and can communicate important Meet details to them directly. Diving entries should be restricted to those athletes that can successfully complete eleven (11) dives and whose combined Degree of Difficulty for their five (5) voluntary dives has a sum total of 9.0 or less. Divers that fail two dives will be disqualified from the competition. Dive selection must comply with Rule 9, Section 4, Article 1 of the National Federation High School Swimming, Diving and Water Polo rules. Diving Entries: o Divers should be entered with Team Manager along with the swimmers. o A separate 11-Dive Diving Sheet (attached Excel Spreadsheet) should be submitted directly to the Diving Coordinator via by 6:00 p.m. on the Monday immediately preceding the meet (February 14th, 2010). o Please keep a copy of each completed dive sheet. o Only divers that submit diving sheets to the Diving Coordinator by the deadline will be entered in the meet. o Changes are permitted until 60 minutes prior to the start of the diving competition. All schools that enter one or more divers must supply one volunteer to assist with the administration of the diving competition. All Diving coaches will meet at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 18, 2009 in the Multi-Purpose room upstairs at the to coordinate final details of the diving competition. Seeding: All events will be seeded in advance, and lanes will be assigned based on the times submitted by the coaches. For the preliminaries, heats will be seeded from slowest to fastest with the final three heats being circle seeded. A preliminary pysch sheet and meet program will be distributed via e- mail prior to the day of the Meet. Page 7 of 16

8 Scoring: Music for Top Qualifier The Meet will be scored as follows: For individual events, the first 16 places in the Championship and Consolation Finals will be awarded points in the following manner: For relay events, the first 16 places in the Championship and Consolation Finals will be awarded points in the following manner: No swimmer or relay in the Consolation Finals may score ahead of a swimmer or relay in the Championship Finals. The top qualifiers will select a pre-race song of their choice for Finals If a swimmer s first selection is deemed inappropriate by the Meet Director, music will be provided on that swimmer s behalf (e.g. Bee Gees or ABBA). Coaches, please do not put the meet director in a position to invoke this rule. Music selections must be delivered to the Meet Director within 15 minutes of the end of the preliminary session. Each school is allocated one vote: Swimmer of the Meet: Men & Women Sportsmanship: Men & Women Spirit: Men & Women Coach of the Year: Men & Women Diving Coach of the Year Medal Ceremonies The medal ceremonies for the top-8 boys and girls in each event will be done during a single break at the conclusion of the following boys and girls events. For example, the medals for the boys and girls 200 medley relays will be presented after the Consolation and Championship Finals of both girls and boys 200 Free have been completed. We tried this for the first time last year and it cut the number of breaks for award ceremonies in half which meant that the Finals competition will ended earlier in the evening. Page 8 of 16

9 Timing: Timing will be done using the Colorado Timing System. To backup the CTS, two timers will have a CTS backup button. Each lane will have 3 stopwatches as a tertiary backup. Timer Assignments Each school will be responsible for providing 3 timers to report to the following lanes. 10 Starting Procedures for Preliminaries and Finals Meet Qualifying Times The Referee and Starter will use a whistle start procedure for this Meet. Whistles start procedures as are used in USA Swimming will be used at this Meet. The procedure will be as follows: o 4 or 5 consecutive whistles means get ready. o The Announcer will announce the event. o 1 long whistle means to step up on the block. o For backstroke only, there will be another long whistle in lieu of a command to place your feet. o The starter will simply say Take Your Mark, and a horn will signal the start. We will use dive over starts for Prelims, but not for Finals. For each Final Event, we will: o Swim the Consolation Finals (Preliminary qualifier 9 thru 16). o Parade the top 8 qualifiers to the blocks with music selected by the top qualifier. o Swim the Championship Finals. o After both the girls and boys have completed a particular event, we will present medals to the top 8 girl and boy finishers from the two previous events. 11 USA Observed Swims General Admission Fees USA Swimming certified officials will be on deck, and all times swum by USA swimmers identified as such in the meet entries at this Meet will be recognized by Swimming. To identify a swimmer as a USA Swimmer, their USA Swimming ID number must be included in your entry file. This requires each coach to put the swimmers USA Swimming ID in the swimmers profile in Team Manager prior to exporting entries. General Admission Fees, includes a Heat Sheet o Preliminaries (AM): $3.00 per session. o Finals (PM): $5.00 per session. o Diving: $3.00 per session. o Two Day, All Session Pass: $ o Family Maximum: 3 times the specified rate. Children under 10 are free. The gate will be staffed from: o 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. o 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. o 4:45 to 7:30 p.m. Heat Sheets Free with a paid admission Finals Heat Sheets: Free with a paid admission or free with a coupon from the Preliminary Heat Sheet. Seating Only competitors and officials will be allowed on the pool deck. All spectators must remain either in the bleachers or in the gymnasium. One section of the bleachers immediately across from the competition area of the pool will be designated as Watch and Go seating. o The area is designed to ensure that parents and other highly interested spectators have an opportunity to see specific races from premium seating. o Spectators may not remain in this area for longer than 15 minutes. o Meet Marshals will be assigned to ensure that spectators are rotating through the area in a manner that allows everyone to take full advantage of the seating area. o For Finals, an additional Watch and Go seating area will be designated just for immediate family and grandparents. 12 Competition Swim Suits Prior to last year s meet, the National Federation of High Schools announced that speed suits are banned from high school competition. o All suits must be made of a textile fabric. o Boys can only wear jammers or briefs nothing above the waste or below the knee will be allowed. o Girls cannot wear suits that cover the shoulders or go below the knee. Also, zippers are no longer allowed on girls suits. Deck Changing Deck changing, the practice of swimmers changing out of their swim suit on the deck with just a towel wrapped around themselves, is expressly forbidden at this State Championship Meet. At the discretion of the Meet Referee, a swimmer who deck changes may be sanctioned up to and including ejection from the Meet. Concessions Food and drinks will be available during the Meet at a concession stand in the upstairs multipurpose room of the. A Hospitality area for Coaches and Officials will be established in the wet classroom off of the pool deck. Meet T-Shirts Long-sleeved meet T-Shirts will be available at the concession stand on a first come, first served basis until they run out. Shirts will be $20 each. Photos This year we will have a professional photographer during the State Meet. He will photograph both the formal awards ceremonies and take candid shots of the entire Meet. Information on how to order photos will be included in the meet program Webcast and Video DVDs Like last year, SwimmingWorldTV will post videos every heat of prelims and finals on SwimmingWorld.tv. Finals will be streamed live with color commentary from one of SwimmingWorldTV s professional announcers Video DVDs of all SwimmingWorldTV recordings can be ordered for future shipping for $10 Page 12 of 16

13 Spirit: Teams are encouraged to establish team areas around the pool deck. Teams are strongly encouraged to bring banners to display. They can be hung from the bottom edge of the spectator balcony. They may also be hung from the walls of the Aquatic Center as long as they are hung with blue painter s tape. Teams are strongly encouraged to do team cheers prior to the start of the meet and during the breaks. All swimmers should remain in the pool area to cheer (loudly) for their fellow swimmers. No face or body paint of any type on those athletes participating in the Meet. Marker or temporary tattoos are allowed as long as they are respectful, sportsmanlike, not overdone and do not wash off in the water. Senior Parade Prior to the Saturday night Finals, we will run a Senior Parade to recognize all of the seniors. The Parade is a time of celebration, and seniors are encouraged to dress for the occasion. To ensure the appropriateness of the dress and behavior for the event, the following guidelines will be enforced: Swimmers are strongly encouraged to wear their school warm ups. Swimmers may use fun hats, beads, capes, wings (over the school warm up). No face or body paint of any type on those swimmers swimming in Consolation or Championship Final Heats. Marker or temporary tattoos are allowed as long as they are respectful, sportsmanlike, not overdone and do not wash off in the water. Absolutely no outfits with a sexual innuendo, such as, but not limited to: Playboy bunnies, beauty queens, boys or girls dressed in drag, undergarments worn over the top of warm ups, body parts drawn onto the body, high heels, etc. Swimmers that do not comply with the guidelines will be asked to remove the offensive material. If they choose not to remove, they will not walk in the Senior Parade. Please do not put the Parade Coordinator in the uncomfortable position of excluding a senior from the Parade. Media The Team Information Sheet requests addresses for your local media. Information and results will be sent on Friday and Saturday night to those identified. Page 13 of 16

14 Pool Rules: Nothing may be left in the locker room. There will be other patrons of the while we are there. Swimmers should store their bags and other items in their team area in the gym. The staff and the Meet Host is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Participants and spectators are not allowed in any rooms not directly associated with the Meet. Only coaches, swimmers and officials are allowed on the pool deck. The Meet Referee has the authority to remove any participant or spectator who is behaving in an inappropriate or unsafe manner. Please be courteous and respectful of the Christiansburg Aquatic staff. We want to be welcome at this beautiful facility in the future. Directions: From I-81 North or South Take I-81 to Exit 118C for US-11/US-460. Turn right at the end of exit ramp on Roanoke St and go 2.9 miles to Main St. Turn left on Main St, travel only 0.1 miles and make an immediate right on North Franklin Street. The pool is 0.6 miles on the left. Parking: Spectator parking is available in the lot on the North end of the complex. Overflow parking is available in the South end of the Kroger parking lot behind the Aquatic Center (to the East) Team buses should park in the South end of the Kroger lot Page 14 of 16
