Olympian dives head first into junior coaching role FORMER Olympian Craig Stevens was on hand at Orange Aquatic Centre for Swimming NSW s inaugural Mountains and Plains Development Days. Orange Aquatic Centre hosted two development days on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June after Swimming NSW restructured junior development to include all swimmers in one of four groups - elite (national swimmers), B squad (country and state swimmers), C squad (swimmers aged nine to 12) and D squad (aged eight and below). Stevens watched over Mountains and Plains D squad swimmers on Saturday, and said visiting country areas is one of the most satisfying parts of his job. I was working in an office and wasn t enjoying it, he laughed. Coaching is very motivating, and it s great to be able to work with juniors and see them progress, especially out here where they don t get as many opportunities. Stevens, an Olympic and Commonwealth Games medalist, said the program is aimed at exposing rural areas to the highest level of coaching. The idea is to get as many Sydney based coaches out into country areas, he said. It s about bringing kids from the same area together, doing some testing and then in six or 12 months down the track doing the same thing again, to keep them involved in swimming and motivated and maybe give them some chances they might not otherwise get. Results are graphed, and put in a database and sent to Swimming NSW. It s a way to keep swimming growing at a grassroots level. JETS Swim Club carnival project coordinator Douglas Beggs heaped praise on the program. It s a chance for us, the also-rans of swimming, to mix it with the best Sydney athletes, Beggs said. The kids get the chance to be coached by Sydney coaches, and learn from them about how to go about it. Our coaches also get exposed to the best coaches in the state. Mountains and Plains C squad was put through its paces on Sunday, while the B squad camp will be held on July 19 and 20 at Orange Aquatic Centre. The elite squad development day is in August, at Knox Grammar School in Sydney. Article sourced from Central Western Daily Page 9

When Maniah wasn t doing laps up and down the pool with his Club mates, he and his brother Dylan would be entertaining them with their singing or dancing routine.!! Swimming Metro South West send out their deepest condolences to Cubitt, Merrill and all of his family at this sad time.

Golden night and two world records in Glasgow Australia s 4x100m freestyle relay team of Bronte Campbell, Melanie Schlanger, Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell, alongside Rowan Crothers, have broken two world records on the opening night of Commonwealth Games swimming action in Glasgow. Six years after Cate Campbell made her Australian debut and dreamed of standing atop the medal dais alongside her younger sister Bronte, the dream played out in world record fashion with the reigning Olympic champions taking nearly a second off the previous world best set by the Netherlands in To quote Muhammed Ali we are the greatest, said freestyle world champion Cate Campbell. I said if we ever broke the world record that would be the line to use. Qualifying into the final thanks to Alicia Coutts, Brittany Elmslie, Madeline Groves and Schlanger, the Aussie team hit the wall in 3:30.98 for the third gold medal of the night, following Emma McKeon s effort in the 200m freestyle and Crothers 100m free title. Competing in her third swim of the night, and fifth of the day, McKeon was a standout at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, and will be looking for a third medal herself, when she jumps in the 100m butterfly. The Wollongong born 20-year-old won the 200m free in 1:55.57 ahead of England s Siobhan O Connor (1:55.82) with Australian team leader Bronte Barratt taking bronze in 1: The golden double for McKeon followed a silver to her older brother David after leading the men s 400m freestyle for 375m, only to be chased down by Canadian Ryan Cochrane. David McKeon covered the eight laps in 3:44.09 just half a second behind Cochrane, while James Guy from England was third in 3:44.38 ahead of Commonwealth Games debutant Mack Horton in 3:44.91 with Jordan Harrison finishing sixth in 3: Australia s third gold medal of the night went to Para Sport swimmer Rowan Crothers who bettered his previous best world mark to win the men s 100m freestyle by more than a body length. A rookie onto the Australian team at 15 last year, Crothers shaved a further half a second off his own world record set in April, hitting the wall in 54.58, ahead of Paralympic gold medallists Matthew Cowdrey (56.33) and Brenden Hall third in Swimming in her first ever senior international competition, and the first event on the program, Australia s Keryn McMaster proved her potential and bagged the bronze medal in the women s 400m individual medley final. McMaster swam a controlled race and three second personal best, managing to keep hot on the heels of gold and silver medallists Hannah Miley (4:31.76) and Aimee Wilmont (4:33.01) to clock a new personal best time of 4: The time was fast enough to secure nomination for selection onto the Hancock Prospecting Pan Pacific Swimming Championships on the Gold Coast this August. McMaster s teammate Jessica Pengelly finished seventh in 4: Australia finished the night with three gold, two silver and three bronze for a total of eight medals at the pool on the first night of competion. *Article sourced from Swimming Australia Page 11

Australia has had a great night two in the pool in Glasgow, with the men s 4x100m freestyle relay winning the final race on the program to cap a fourgold performance. Earlier, Leiston Pickett won the 50m breaststroke event, Thomas Fraser-Holmes and Cameron McEvoy went 1-2 in the men s 200m freestyle and Maddison Elliott set a world record in the women s parasport S8 100m freestyle. The relay team of Tommaso D Orsogna, Matt Abood, James Magnussen and Cameron McEvoy stopped the clock in a Games record time of three minutes seconds, ahead of South Africa and England. South Africa started quickly with Chad le Clos, leading Australia by 0.75 seconds after the opening 100m. The South Africans continued to hold the lead into the third leg, but Magnussen put in a strong final 50 to close the margin to just 0.07 seconds as McEvoy entered the water. It was a tough battle in the final hundred, as McEvoy and Caydon Muller went at it. McEvoy eked out a 0.31 seconds gap at the final turn, but the result was in doubt until the final 20m when McEvoy pulled ahead to win by 1.73 seconds. Afterwards lead-off man D Orsogna told Channel Ten he was unhappy with his start. I probably didn t get us off to the best start that we were hoping for, but still, that is what happens in the relays. If someone falls down, the rest of the boys are there to pick up the slack. That is what these boys did. A huge thank you to them. McEvoy said the world record-setting women s relay team had provided inspiration for the men. We did really well in the execution. The girls relay team yesterday, they put it into perspective, how well we can go when the team comes together. I think we came into this (united), we came out with a good result. Earlier, McEvoy went into the 200m freestyle final as favourite, and he went out looking in rare form, establishing a 0.4 second lead after one lap and extending to half a second at the 100m mark. Thomas Fraser-Holmes made his move in the third 50, cutting back the lead to just 0.2 seconds at the final turn before he and McEvoy went for it in the final lap. Fraser-Holmes had the edge in the final 15m and he went in to touch the wall first, with McEvoy second and David McKeon was narrowly beaten for the bronze medal finishing fourth behind Wales Calum Jarvis. I m really happy with my performance tonight, Fraser- Holmes told Grandstand after the race before talking about the challenge from his team-mate McEvoy. We re going to have a great rivalry the next couple of years leading into Rio. It doesn t make it easier, but it makes it more fun when you re competing against one of your good friends. Fraser-Holmes backed up with silver in the 400m individual medley. South Africa s Sebastien Rousseau led the field out strongly through the first two legs, as Fraser-Holmes was left behind. The Australian came through in the second half of the race, but it was Scotland s Daniel Wallace who took the gold, beating Fraser-Holmes into silver with Rousseau in the bronze medal position. *Article sourced from Swimming Australia Page 12

Elliott breaks WR in S8 100m free Maddison Elliott made it three golds for the second night of competition when she won the women s 100m S8 freestyle event, setting a world record time of 1: The 15-year-old beat England s Stephanie Slater, with Australia s Lakeisha Patterson taking the bronze. Elliott told Grandstand she had been aiming to break the world mark for some time. I was hoping to do that, she said. When I knew I didn t break it this morning, I really wanted to get it tonight. (I ve wanted to break it) since the world championships last year in Montreal. In the women s 100m butterfly final, Emma McKeon took the bronze and Alicia Coutts finished out of the medals in fourth, while Ellen Gandy was eighth. The event was won by Canadian Katerine Savard, who got the better of England s Siobhan O Connor to win the gold medal. Savard finished in ahead of O Connor in and McKeon in Australia took two medals in the men s 100m backstroke final, as Mitch Larkin won the silver and Josh Beaver dead-heated for bronze. England s Chris Walker-Hebborn won the event in 53.12, from Larkin in Beaver and England s Liam Tancock could not be split for third in a time of *Article sourced from Swimming Australia Page 13

David McKeon edged out for gold medal in 400m free In the men s 400m freestyle final, Emma McKeon s brother David led for most of the race before being chased down in the final 50m by Canada s Ryan Cochrane to finish with the silver medal on night two of the competition. Mack Horton finished fourth and Jordan Harrison sixth for Australia. McKeon had gone out under world record pace in the first half of the race, and looked solid until the Canadian reeled him in. It s awesome, McKeon told ABC after the race. When I started in this sport... this (Commonwealth Games) was the team I wanted to make. I got the early lead, which is what I was going for. I was probably not as relaxed as I should have been in the marshalling area (before the race). Australia had started the second night with a bronze to Keryn McMaster in the first event of the night, the women s 400m individual medley. McMaster touched the wall in four minutes, seconds, behind hometown gold medallist Hannah Miley from Scotland, who beat England s Aimee Wilmott. In the other semi-final, Alicia Coutts (second) and Ellen Gandy (third) advanced to the final behind England s Siobhan O Connor. In the men s 100m backstroke, Australia s Josh Beaver won his semi-final in seconds, with team-mate Ben Treffers third in seconds. Australia s Mitch Larkin won his semi in a time of seconds to qualify fastest for the final. *Article sourced from Swimming Australia Earlier, Australia claimed a second gold medal in the S9 100m freestyle event, when 16-year-old Rowan Crothers beat team-mate Matt Cowdrey to win the race in a world record time of seconds. Brenden Hall made it a for Australia taking the bronze. Page 14

Double triple as swimmers re-write history The Australian women have finished the second night of competition the way it had begun with world record breaking teammates from the 4x100m freestyle relay Cate Campbell, Bronte Campbell and Emma McKeon asserting their dominance in the 100m free to finish with gold, silver and bronze medals, just as the Australian men had done the night before. In an impressive display of speed and skill, Cate turned at the 50m metre mark well under world record pace and held on to the lead to take the win ahead of her sister Bronte in a time of the fastest time in the world this year. Not to be outdone in the speed stakes, Bronte came home strong in the final lap to also record a sub- 53-second time and secure silver in with McKeon collecting the bronze - her fifth medal of the Games in a time of Not since 1958 when Dawn Fraser, Lorraine Crapp, and Alva Colquhoun went one, two, three in Cardiff had an Aussie trio dominated the women s 100m freestyle at the Games. World Junior Champion in this event from 2013 Alanna Bowles swam the race of her life in the final of the women s 800m freestyle, finishing just outside the medals in fourth place and setting a new personal best time of 8: At just 16-years-of-age, that time puts the Commonwealth Games debutant into seventh place on the Australian all-time top ten and is a promising sign on the road to Rio. Fellow Australian Jessica Ashwood finished sixth in 8:29.32 with Laura Crockart eighth in 8:41.64 Olympic gold medallist in this event Chad Le Clos was too strong for the rest of the field in the final of the men s 100m butterfly, grabbing gold and setting a new Games record in Jayden Hadler (52.42) was the best placed Australian finishing just off the pace in fourth place with dual medallist from the meet so far Tommaso D Orsogna (52.45) fifth and Chris Wright (52.88) eighth. *Article sourced from Swimming Australia Page 15

Another gold rush for Australia s swimmers Australia has a new hero in the pool with Daniel Tranter claiming gold in the men s 200m individual medley at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games on the final night of competition. Fastest qualifier Tranter, 22, clocked a Games record one minute seconds, ahead of Scotland s Daniel Wallace (1:58.72) and South Africa s Chad le Clos (1:58.85). Australia s Thomas Fraser-Holmes was fourth (1:58.86). His gold came on yet another successful night for Australian swimmers, with the women s 4x100m medley relay team also snatching gold. Emily Seebohm, Lorna Tonks, Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell also clocked a Games record three minutes and seconds to overhaul England (3:57.03). Canada was third in 4: Cameron McEvoy and James Magnussen took the silver and bronze medals in the men s 50m freestyle. England s Ben Proud won gold in seconds ahead of McEvoy (22.00) and 100m champion Magnussen (22.10). It was Magnussen s third medal of the meet and McEvoy s fourth. Bronte Barratt claimed bronze in the women s 400m freestyle final. London Olympic gold medallist Barratt, 25, clocked four minutes, seconds to finish behind New Zealand s Lauren Boyle (4:04.47) and Wales Jazz Carlin (4:05.16). Dual Olympian Barratt was also a member of the gold medal-winning 4x200m freestyle relay team at Glasgow. Australian Games rookie and junior world champion Remy Fairweather, 17, was sixth (4:07.65). Mack Horton later added to the medal rush in the pool for Australia, claiming silver in the men s 1500m freestyle. Canada s London Olympic silver medallist Ryan Cochrane clocked 14 minutes, seconds ahead of Horton (14:48.76 PB) and Wales Daniel Jervis (14:55.33). Australia s Jordan Harrison (14:55.71) was fourth. 17 Swimmers to leave Glasgow with a golden glow The Australian Swim Team have departed Glasgow having wrapped up their 2014 Commonwealth Games campaign winning a total of 57 medals (19 gold, 21 silver and 17 bronze), including five of the six relay gold medals and setting four world records. The team of 59 swimmers won a further eight medals on the final night of competition, including gold to Daniel Tranter in the men s 200m IM and gold for Emily Seebohm, Lorna Tonks, Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell in the women s 4x100m medley relay. A World Championship finalist in the 200m IM last year, Tranter swam the race of his life to overcome Scotland s Daniel Wallace (1:58.72) and Olympic gold medallist Chad Le Clos (1:58.85) to grab the first gold medal of the night and set a new Games record in the process. Following a sensational breaststroke leg, Tranter moved into first place and could not be caught as he stormed into the wall to record a time of 1:57.83 and take the win. Also impressing with a fast third leg was threetime medallist from the meet so far, Thomas Fraser- Holmes (1:58.86) who missed the podium by just 0.01 of a second. Having won the women s 4x100m medley relay at every Games since 1990, the women s team of Seebohm, Tonks, McKeon and Cate Campbell, proudly carried on the tradition for Australia picking up the gold medal in a Games record time of 3: With England leading at the half way mark, a superb butterfly leg from McKeon and then a split for Cate Campbell in the freestyle saw Australia add one last gold medal to their haul and make it a clean sweep of the women s relay events. England finished with the silver medal in 3:57.03 with Canada rounding out the top three in 4: In the corresponding men s event, the Australian team of Mitch Larkin, Christian Sprenger, Jayden Hadler and James Magnussen finished just shy of the top spot with James Magnussen anchoring the team to the silver in 3: England (3:31.51) touched the wall just 0.70 ahead of Australia to steal the gold medal while South Africa were third in 3: As the white water cleared in the men s 50m freestyle splash and dash it was England s Ben Proud who touched the wall first and spoiled another clean sweep of the podium from Australia. Proud took the gold ahead of Cameron McEvoy (22.00) in the silver medal position, James Magnussen (22.10) with the bronze and Matthew Abood (22.14) in fourth. With a proud history in the men s 1500m freestyle, Australia had two teenagers in the water looking to carry on that legacy. World Junior Champion and World Junior record holder in the event, Mack Horton won his first senior individual international medal with a silver behind defending champion Ryan Cochrane (14:44.03). Hitting the wall in a new personal best time of 14:48.76, Horton moved into third place on the Australian all-time top ten, with only Grant Hackett and Kieren Perkins ahead of him. Keeping up with the pace for the majority of the race, Jordan Harrison (14:55.71) just missed the podium with Welsh swimmer Daniel Jervis sprinting home over the last 50m to take third place in a time of 14: In the final para-sport event of the competition, Katherine Downie moved her way up the rankings with a two second personal best in the women s S10 200m individual medley. Page 17

Swimmers to leave Glasgow with a golden glow With a silver medal to her name from this event at the IPC World Championships in Montreal, Downie stopped the clock almost five seconds faster than her heat swim to secure silver in the final of the women s para-sport S10 200m individual medley. New Zealand s Sophie Pascoe was too strong for the rest of the field, taking gold in 2:27.74 while Aurelie Rivard was relegated to third behind Downie in 2: Commonwealth Games debutant Madeleine Scott was fourth in 2: The women s 400m freestyle saw dual medallist from the meet so far Bronte Barratt bag another bronze medal for her effort in the final. In a demanding race that saw a number of swimmers fighting for a minor medal, it was Barratt who managed to get her hand on the wall for bronze behind New Zealand s Lauren Boyle (4:04.47) and Jazz Carlin (4:05.16) from Wales. Swimming in her first major international final, 17-year-old Remy Fairweather hit the wall in sixth place in a time of 4: A gold and silver medallist from the meet so far, Emily Seebohm was just short of adding a bronze medal to complete her collection in the final of the women s 50m backstroke when she was out-touched at the wall to finish fourth in Belinda Hocking (28.58) and Madi Wilson (28.86) capped off their Commonwealth Games campaign in 7th and 8th position respectively. The Australian Swim Team will departed Glasgow on Wednesday 30 July to return to Australia and start preparations for the 2014 Hancock Prospecting Pan Pacific Swimming Championships on the Gold Coast starting August 21. 21 Council chatter: Club is on lookout for new swimmers NAIDOC Week celebrations made a splash at Emerton Leisure Centre last week. The council facility used the event to promote its swim club and encourage swimmers to join its growing ranks. Its six indigenous swimmers in particular have had great success. The club meets fortnightly on Friday nights during school terms, competes in Swimming NSW s metropolitan south-west competition and holds an annual team trip. Members also take part in Swimming Australia s junior excellence program for swimmers aged 9 to 13. Swimmers who accomplish times set by Swimming Australia qualify at gold, silver, bronze or green standard, depending on their best season times. Blacktown councillor Charlie Lowles has been working with the club and the council to help reduce squad costs. Emerton Swim Club will hold free trials until September 12. The first is on Friday (July 18), 6pm-8pm. Swimmers cover a minimum 25 metres. The club needs more parents to volunteer as timekeepers. Details: Scott Stubbs, *Article sourced from St Mary s Mt Druitt Star Mountains & Plains B Squad Mountains and Plains B Squad had a rewarding weekend on the 19th & 20th July in Orange. Swimmers and Committee stayed overnight at the Orange Scout Camp down the Cargo Road on the banks of Lake Canobolas. Snow had fallen on the Friday in Orange and was still evident on Mount Canobolas which is up the road from the Scout Camp so it was a chilly night. A huge roaring fire was built in the fire pit and all enjoyed hanging out there and toasting marshmallows. Presentations and coaching was outstandingly given by our two guest Sliver Licence coaches, Haydn Belshaw and Gary Hollywood. Swim sessions were at the Orange Indoor Aquatic Centre and swimmers generated a lot of interest from other pool users. 26 NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS Swimming NSW and First Splashes Toronto teamed up to provide a community BBQ to families from the Nikinpa Aboriginal Children s Service in celebration of NAIDOC week. NAIDOC celebrations where held all over the Australia to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, history and achievements. It is a celebration that brings communities together and pays respect to past and present people. The event was attended by over 60 people who access the facility on a regular base. It was a great opportunity to interact with community members and spread some water safety education facts. This is the second year in a row that First Splashes at Toronto Swim Centre have been offering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander swimming programs to the community. First Splashes are just as passionate about reducing the current drowning rates for Indigenous Australian s as Swimming NSW is. Since starting Koori Swimming Programs in facilities across the state, over 500 swimmers have had the opportunity to participate in structured swimming and water safety programs. For a large portion of these, it is their first time participating in a learn to swim program. For more information on how your facility can provide opportunities for Indigenous families in your community, please contact Kerrie-Anne Anstis at the Swimming NSW office Page 25

Encouraging a positive attitude to sport By Raising Children Network Healthy minds, healthy bodies, friendships and life skills are just some of the benefits children can gain by playing sport. By teaching your child how to be a good sport from a young age, you re helping him get the most out of being part of the game. Effort equals success One minute your child is racing for the finish line, shooting for goal or hitting a six. The next minute she can t believe she was pipped at the post, missed the net or got caught on the boundary. The great thing about junior sport is that your child gets the chance to experience these emotional highs and lows in a controlled and structured environment. Sport can give your child the chance to learn about being part of a team, winning well, bouncing back from a loss and coping with unpleasant experiences such as injury or aggressive behaviour. Sport also teaches your child about how important it is to try hard, even if this doesn t always add up to a win on the field. For example, he might do a great job of running and kicking the ball, but his soccer team might still lose the match. It s all about how you and your child see the experience. Encouraging a positive sporting attitude Your child loves to please you, make you proud and gain your approval. You can send your child a powerful message about what makes you proud will it be your child s effort or the number of goals he scores At home In sport as in everything else, you are your child s most important role model. When you re watching sport together, try to be aware of your comments. You can encourage a positive sporting attitude by encouraging and cheering on your team for their efforts, even if they re losing badly. Abusing a losing team can send a negative message to your child. It might also be an idea to point out and praise athletes who don t come first. In the end, your child s effort is the only thing that s completely within her control. Her effort, not the result of the match, is what makes it a success or failure. If she gets to the end of a game and knows that she tried her very best, she s been successful. You can talk to your child about how hard the athlete tried, despite the result. You might like to give some examples of sportspeople you admire who aren t always winners, but who are known as good sports. Find out what your child wants to get out of playing sport, and try not to place unnecessary pressure on your child to do well. When your child comes home after playing sport, ask her if she enjoyed her sporting activity before asking if she won. Focus on enjoyment, participation and effort, rather than winning and losing. On the sideline When you go to sporting events, your behaviour has a big impact on your child. Whether that impact is positive or negative depends on how you behave, speak, sound and participate on the sidelines. For example, think about how your child might feel if you shout something like, Oh, how could you miss that? or Can t you run faster? Compare those feelings to how he might feel if you say, Great shot better luck next time! or Keep going, mate you re almost there. Your tone often has a bigger impact on your child than the words you actually say. If your child thinks you re angry with her for missing the shot, it could really take the fun out of things especially if she gets that feeling week after week. It might even have a negative impact on her self-esteem if she s getting the message that she s no good at sport. If you sound upbeat and as if you re having fun, it can help her feel the same way. Page 26

Encouraging a positive attitude to sport As your child gets older The emphasis in sport often starts to shift to a more adult, winning-focused style as children get older. This can leave some children behind. If your child isn t enjoying her sport anymore, think about ways to keep her involved, including changing to a new team or sport. This will mean she can keep taking advantage of sport s many opportunities. When your child doesn t want to play sport If your child doesn t want to play sport anymore, you ll be able to help better if you know why he s feeling that way. Your child s reasons for dropping out might be easy to get around, or could give you ideas for other options. You might want to talk about whether he wants to withdraw from a particular sport or team, or whether he wants to withdraw from sport completely. Some common reasons children give for dropping out of sport include:»» not being as good as they want to be»» having other things they want to do with their time»» wanting to play another sport»» not having enough fun»» not liking the pressure»» being bored»» not liking the coach or other team members»» finding the training too hard»» losing often. If your child does want to withdraw from sport, there are lots of fun exercise alternatives for you to consider together:»» walking or bushwalking with parents or friends»» classes with friends or family for example, spin, boxing, mixed martial arts, circuit, Zumba and so on»» gym memberships these can offer an individual approach to exercise»» yoga or Tai Chi these offer a more passive and mindful approach to physical activity»» Pilates this provides strength and stability training»» bike-riding»» roller-blading»» dancing. Modified sport Modified sports programs are a good alternative if your child is losing interest in sport because of poor skills or frequent losses. A modified sport is a simplified version of the adult game. For example, Tee Ball is a modified version of softball and baseball. There s no pitcher and the ball is hit from a tee so all players can hit it more easily and then run to first base. Other popular modified sports include Auskick (Australian Rules Football), Miniball basketball, Futsal (five-a-side soccer) and Netta netball. Modified sports are changed in several ways to be more inclusive particularly for younger players and encourage participation. For example, they might have smaller court or field sizes, smaller team sizes, modified equipment, modified rules, or grading by height and weight (not age). Some organised sports shift the focus away from competition by getting rid of competition ladders or finals, and emphasising participation, rather than results. They might use participation certificates rather than end-of-season trophies, and ask coaches and umpires to take a positive approach. 29 Thank you to Campbelltown and Revesby Workers swim clubs who kindly volunteered their time to support the Multi Class meet on 21 June Each volunteer has taken away,a wonderful experience and have now passed their timekeepers accreditation. Aleksandria Ilic, Madyson Kenny and Molly Dowse are writing about their experience in their Clubs newsletters and encouraging other young Club swimmers to also join them and give back. This was organised by the lovely Susan Eadie who drove them there, looked after them and then even took them to Mcdonalds after a very rewarding day. Rebecca Hughes and Jacob Duggan should also be proud for taking up my challenge to Give Back and will also be encouraging others to give some support to MC. We hope that down the road we get many clubs spending the word and encouraging their swimmers of High School age to also support our MC as a way of Giving Back. This is what Aleks had to say about the day: On 21 st June Maddy, Molly and I went with Susan to the MC Qualifying meet in Homebush to help out with the timekeeping.two swimmers from Revesby Workers also joined us for a day of work, fun and plenty of free food. We were treated like true professionals and taken to the Shane Gould room where we were given drinks and a run through the day s events. The meet was just like any other meet except with a few different events. It was great to see all the laughter and excitement in the marshalling area and all the positive energy. We made some great friends on the day and felt really happy that we had done something to help others. We ll definitely be back for the MC state championships and would love to see some more Campbelltown swimmers join us. Thank you Susan. Cheers Aleks Thank you to Revesby Swim Club and Campbelltown Swim Club Volunteers Page 28

** Resources for Technical Officials ** The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is committed to the support of officiating. Recruitment, education and retention are seen as the key factors in assisting with the development of officials at all levels. The ASC has identified the need to work in conjunction with National and State Sporting Organisations, State Sport Federations and State Departments of Sport and Recreation to develop and deliver strategies aimed at increasing the number and quality of officials at all levels of Australian sport and to investigate ways in which officials can be supported. Some of the initiatives the ASC has been working on include: The National Officiating Scholarships (NOS) Introduction to Officiating courses online The ASC has developed a number of resources that are available online for officials to use in their self-development. These resources can be found at: The articles that can be found on-line include but are not limited to the following topics: Officiating Children Game Day Communication Safety and ethics. Although these are not swimming specific, there are some great tips. Swimming NSW is providing this information to you for your interest and to assist in your development as a technical official. The Swimming NSW Technical Committee would ask that all interested officials take some time to have a look at these useful resources.
