SMNW Development Squads SMNW B & C Development Squads On Sunday 31st July we attended a 3hr training session at Windsor pool which first involved a 1hr talk about the importance of stretching and activation. We then hopped in the pool and practiced our starts, turns and finishes. From the 12-14th of August, the SMNW Development B and C Squads stayed for two nights at the Olympic Lodge at Newington Armoury, and competed at Ryde Aquatic Centre on both Saturday and Sunday against other districts from NSW. On Saturday, we swam our individual events, with over half of the Dolphins representatives making finals for the 100m events. Hats off to Emily Rozic for swimming 4x100m races within 30 minutes - she slept like a log that night! Sunday consisted of fun events such as team relays and skins events, where we both represented SMNW in the 50m freestyle skins event. We made it to the top 8 where we were knocked out in a very tight race. Other Dolphins members also smashed out their competitors in the skins events. At the conclusion of the meet, SMNW were crowned champions! Our last training session was held on Sunday 21st August, which included a talk on nutrition, goal setting and personal accountability. More technique work regarding dives and turns took place in the pool, with emphasis on our set-ups for the dives. The coaches then decided to test our endurance with another skins set. Overall, it was a very informative and positive experience that allowed us to perfect our technique and meet new people. Megan Close & Emily Rozic
B & C SQUAD MEET (13-14 AUGUST)
SNSW Development Squads Age Development The whole weekend started with me hopping into my car to go to that place every swimmer knows like the back of their hand, Sydney Olympic Park. From there I gathered all my belongings, kissed my mum goodbye and hopped on a bus with many other swimmers I don't know and ventured off to a mysterious place known as Canberra. After a long bus ride full of talking to some old friends and bonding over Pokémon Go to make some new ones we finally made it to our hotel. The rooms weren't the nicest (and neither was the food) but we weren't there for the accommodation so moved on. After a night of introducing ourselves, doing activities and chilling out in our rooms it was time for sleep awaiting the next day. After a brisk wake up and some food in our guts we headed off for the first day of training and learning. We were split up into our stroke groups and I was places with the sprint freestylers. The training wasn't too hard as most of it was skill based, perfecting things such as turns and body position in the water. After training we had lectures from a Biomechanist and an Swimming Australia rep. After that it was back in the pool and then to the rooms. The night for me was full of jokes and laughter as my room mates and I had fun pulling pranks on each other and the night ended with us all sharing one small shower together as us swimmers do.
An early wake up the next day saw us head of the the AIS for some hard training and learning about our Australian swimming identity. The first thing I did when we arrived was look for some rare Pokemon, to my disappointment I found nothing besides a Pidgey. The test sets were brutal but the food made up for all of it, like after two days of bad motel food the AIS food was like heaven. More training and a speech from a former Australian Olympic Medalist Petria Thomas ended off our time at AIS. It was time to head home with the bus ride back full of singing and a glorious pit stop at 7-Eleven, we finally made it back home where my mum was waiting to give me a hug. All in all it was an amazing time and I took many things away from it, wether it be the friendships or the swimming knowledge, I feel I returned a better swimmer than when I left. Callum Duke

TECHNICAL UPDATE Maintaining Technical Qualifications Accreditation as a Technical Official is valid for four years from the date of issue. However the qualification only remains current whilst the TO is registered with SwimmingNSW. All Dolphin TOs will need to register for the new swimming year which begins on 01 October. SNSW will be taking on-line registrations for next year from 06 September. We are asking that all our current TOs to make sure that they re-register online before 01 October. TO Award Congratulations to Debbie Sharp who was recently awarded the Berry Rickards Encouragement Award for by SwimmingNSW. This award is given to a technical official who has only been in swimming a short time but who has displayed outstanding commitment and ability as a technical official in their short time in the sport. Well done Deb! Refereeing Congratulations to Shane Hurley who recently passed the examination for Inspector of Turns. His next step is to successfully complete a practical assessment for this role. He will then be required complete an examination and an assessment for Judge of Strokes before undertaking the requisite steps for Referee. The Dolphins are fortunate in that, in addition to Shane, we also have Debbie Sharp and Jill Stone currently working towards their Level Three Referee qualification. This will require them to pass an examination and two practical assessments. Winter Sprint Carnival The WSC on 02 September starts at 6:00pm. Could all rostered TOs please be at the pool by no later than 5:45pm. End of the Winter Season Our winter club nights end with the WSC on Saturday, 03 September at the RSL Pool. Friday night swimming for the summer season will commence on 14 October. This means that for some six weeks most of our TOs will get to lead a normal life!! Throughout the winter season a number of Dolphin parents have undertaken training and assessment as officials. As a result of parents either adding to their existing qualifications or gaining their first accreditation, the club is in a strong position for the next swimming year. Even so we can still use even more qualified officials.
Thank you to the committee and to those many people who worked hard and gave a lot of their time to help make the winter season a success. We need a lot of officials to run club swimming nights and carnivals. Somehow we always came up with enough volunteers to get the job done. Computer Operators Like most swimming clubs the Dolphins use an integrated computerised system to control many aspects of our swimming. In the last few months we have lost some of our most experienced operators. We are looking for volunteers willing to help of a Friday night. With more operators we can share the load. Our experienced operators can provide training and mentoring for newcomers. If you are interested, talk to either Michelle Rofe or the people on the recording table of a Friday night. Michelle can also be contacted through our website - treasurer@castlehilldolphins.com.au. Technical Official Training TO positions include Timekeeper, Chief Timekeeper, Marshall, Checkstarter, Starter, and Recorder. Metro North West will be conducting presentations for most TO positions later in the year. Watch the Newsletter for details. To become a TO you must firstly be registered with SNSW and: obtain a Working with Children (WWC) number; complete on-line the General Principles of Sports Officiating*; complete the theory training module for the chosen TO position either on-line or by attending a verbal presentation; undertake practical training; and complete a competency assessment (Starters need to do two assessments). * Existing TOs who have not previously completed the General Principles module must do so before they can attempt further qualifications; If you have any questions or are interested in qualifying for any of the TO positions see Ron Brettle of a Friday night. You can also reach Ron at TO_training@castlehilldolphins.com.au.
