BAY & BASIN AMATEUR SWIM CLUB CLUB HANDBOOK Season

Presidents Welcome Welcome everyone to the 2017/2018 Season. To all the renewing members, welcome back. To all the new members, welcome to our club. I hope you all have a great season. Our Club was formed in 2001 and is still very much a family and community based Club and each year it seems the club goes from strength to strength. We, as a committee work very hard each week to ensure that our swimmers have a great time swimming and our parents enjoy the experience too. The success of the BBASC and its achievements so far, can be put down to the hard work of the committee and the participation of members and their families. The involvement of swimmers, parents, grandparents and members has been excellent. It is this commitment that is the difference between success and failure. The Committee requests that you become involved in all Club activities to ensure its continued success. The BBASC is an affiliated member of the South Eastern Swimming Association (SESA), and Swimming NSW. Our objectives are:! To promote, teach and encourage the arts of swimming, lifesaving and swimming sports.! To stimulate public opinion in favour of providing proper accommodation and facilities for acquiring the arts of swimming and swimming sports.! To participate in Club and Inter-Club activities and competitions. We had Janae Peterson, Kirra Dale, Jasmine Greenwood, Charlotte Greenwood and Talika Irvine represent our club at State Age. We also had a 12 and under girls relay team consisting of Jasmine Greenwood, Charlotte Greenwood, Laylah Connelly and Talika Irvine who were amazing. And a huge congratulations goes to Talika Irvine who is now the 2017 NSW State Age Champion for the 11 years age group. Lucy Graham was selected as a Starter at NSW State Age Championships. Jack Norton and Noah Simpson represented our club at Open Water State Championships where swimmers swam 2.5km. Janae Peterson, Gabi Peterson, Kirra Dale, Jasmine Greenwood, Hannah Thompson, Noah Simpson, Jack Norton, Charlotte Greenwood and Talika Irvine represented our club at Country Championships. 6 swimmers represented our club at Speedo Sprints, well done to Noah Simpson, Charlotte Greenwood, Talika Irvine, Ariana Missingham, Taj Malmborg, and Makynli Dale. We had 3 swimmers from the SESA area Jack Norton, Talika Irvine and Makynli Dale represented our Club at the James Brophy Memorial Cup Meet in Canberra in March. And Lucy Graham was selected from the SESA area to Start at this meet. Jasmine Greenwood swam at State Open & National Championships - Hancock Prospecting in Brisbane then a week later swam at Age Nationals the Georgina Hope Foundation. With the amazing results that Jasmine achieved she was selected to represent Australia at the 2017 Canadian Open in Toronto in late September We had SESA Age Champions in Makynli Dale, Talika Irvine and Kirra Dale and winning relay team for 11 & under Free & IM consisting on Laylah Connelly, Makynli Dale, Talika Irvine & Charlotte Greenwood. For a small club this is a great achievement. Last season saw some of our swimmers progress through their school carnivals to district, Regional and State level. Gabi Peterson and Jasmine Greenwood were chosen to represent their school in Darwin for Nationals. Each September we hold our Trevor McDonald Memorial Development Carnival. Every year we hope to have as many of our swimmers attend and compete at this carnival and we hope to make Trevor and his family proud.

For those new to the Club, Trevor was an integral member of our Club, who mentored the children as well as those of us working towards technical recognition. He was a very popular and a respected member of the swimming community. If you have any questions please don t hesitate to contact one of our committee members who are always happy to help. See you on pool deck Kylie Peterson

The Club s official colours are red and black. The Club uniform is a BBASC Polo Shirt, Club Costume, with a matching Swim Cap. We strongly encourage all members to obtain a BBASC shirt and cap to wear at club nights, carnivals and when representing BBASC. Shirts are also available to order in adult sizes. For any enquiries regarding Club apparel, please see a committee member on club nights. How Can I Help? There are many things that need to be done for the Club to operate smoothly. The club is run by people just like you parents who are volunteers. We need help on club nights. We need timekeepers for each lane, as well as other jobs: starter, marshall, chief timekeeper, check starter, BBQ, or helping setting up and putting away the equipment used by the club at the pool each Friday night. The best way to learn a job at swim club is to buddy up with another parent who can show you the ropes. A BBQ roster will go out as soon as numbers are finalised for the season. If you find that during the week you are unable to attend Swim Club please organise to swap with another family on the roster so the club night will run smoothly. THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY NOT THE COMMITTEES. These jobs are neither difficult nor onerous, and generally require far less commitment and enthusiasm than is put in by the swimmers! So when you see the need for timekeepers, take a watch, lane and clipboard to ensure the club nights get under way on time. We may also issue a timekeeping roster to make it fair for all attending. Of course, there are other ways you can help us:! attend Committee Meetings;! get Technical Official qualifications! assist in the planning and running of our Annual Carnivals;! assist in providing food items, raffle prizes etc. for meets; and! supporting our fundraising initiatives.

Parent Roles & Responsibilities Our Club and also the sport of swimming relies heavily on volunteers for the efficient running of club nights and swim meets. From club level with club nights, through to state level, parents are rostered to perform various duties. Without the assistance of volunteers, club nights and other meets cannot run smoothly and timely. Please read the following points parents need to be aware of: 1. If you have entered your child in a swim meet, expect to be rostered for timekeeping or any other related duties to keep the meet running smoothly (this includes club nights). 2. Timekeeping slots do not always coincide with the times that your child is swimming and may occur once your child has completed his/her events. Just think, you have front row seats. 3. In some meets, the numbers of volunteer slots are allocated according to the number of swims per club and not the number of swimmers or families. 4. A Club night bbq roster will be ed to members at the start of the summer season and also put into the club newsletter. Timekeeping and bbq rosters (if needed) will be printed out and displayed for all to see in our club gazebo for other swim meets. 5. It is the rostered parent s responsibility to arrange a substitute if they cannot do a specific time slot. 6. If you are bringing another swimmer along to the meet and their parents are rostered, you will have to do their slot as well as your own. 7. There will be times when you may be required to do additional slots than what was scheduled on the volunteer roster. 8. All members are encouraged to assist with club fundraising during the season. 9. Without timekeepers our swimmers cannot swim. If you do not honour your responsibility, you run the risk of having your child/ren s entries listed as exhibition swimmers, therefore not eligible for points, ribbons, medals, trophies or placings or may even be declined. What to bring to club nights! A parent/ carer! Swimmers & Goggles! Swimming cap! 2 x Towels! Drink Bottle! Snacks! Warm clothes! Money for BBQ! A smile Club Night Procedures Club nights are held in a fun and informal environment and are an ideal introduction to competition for swimmers, and an opportunity for swimmers and families to meet and socialise with other members. Events are held in race format, all ages and gender swim together. Club Nights are held every Friday night between October and March and every fortnight between May and September (numbers permitting), excluding school holidays. Each Tuesday our Race Secretary (Michelle Graham) will all members to let them know what events will be swimming the coming Friday. Swimmers are required to Michelle back on bbascentries@gmail.com the events they wish to enter by 8pm Thursdays. The entry fee of $4 per swimmer or $1 per Junior Dolphin (aged 7 & under swimming 15m Freestyle only) is taken between pm on Friday at club night by a committee member at the registration desk. If the lane fee has not been collected during this time the swimmer will be removed from that nights pointscore. Swim Club events must start at 5.30pm sharp. The race starter will blow the whistle for all swimmers to get out of the pool and go to the marshalling area (end of the grandstand). Swimmers are to remain in the marshalling area for the duration of swim club as we only pay for entry into the 6 lanes we hire.

Swimming is normally finished by about pm, with the pool closing at 7pm. Please note that no child is to be left unattended at the pool on Friday evenings. Swim Club is fun but requires parental assistance. Parents or your adult representative are required to help with either time keeping, cooking the BBQ or in any other capacity where assistance is required. Swimmers attend for numerous reasons including to:! check out their times for different strokes and distances;! tune up their race techniques;! swim against friends in a friendly low key atmosphere;! familiarise themselves with race procedures;! have some fun and keep fit with friends. All swimmers must stay in the marshalling area. We only call names twice. If swimmers are not there then they could miss their race. Times are automatically recorded with our Dolphin Timing System. All times are displayed on our website under Club Nights Results and posted as promptly as possible. A Referee may pull your swimmer aside and speak to them about something that they have seen in the pool that may lead to disqualification. We do not disqualify at a normal Club Nights but any swimmer showing any infringement in the BBASC Club Championships could/will be disqualified. Feel free to speak to the Referee if you or your child does not understand the infringement conversed. Most important of all - we want you to ENJOY yourself! Swimming and competing are meant to be fun! Remember, it is not important where you come in your race - your aim should be to improve your time and record a Personal Best!!! Qualifying Times for Club Nights If swimmers can swim either of the distances and strokes in the times outlined below they will be assessed to determine that they can do the stroke correctly. If the stroke is executed correctly and to the satisfaction of the Referee they will then be required to advance to the next distance for that stroke/s m swimmers advance to 25m in: Freestyle 27 seconds or better; Backstroke 30 seconds or better; Breaststroke 26 seconds or better; Butterfly 26 seconds or better m swimmers advance to 50m in: Freestyle 35 seconds or better; Backstroke 37 seconds or better; Breaststroke 37 seconds or better; Butterfly 37 seconds or better m swimmers advance to 100m in: Freestyle 50 seconds or better; Backstroke 55 seconds or better; Breaststroke 59 seconds or better; Butterfly 55 seconds or better. Starting Procedures on Club Nights When the competitors have been placed behind their blocks the Starter will announce Event and Heat Number. On the long whistle from the Referee the swimmers shall step onto the starting platform and remain there, or, for backstroke swimming, immediately enter the water for backstroke. A second long whistle shall bring the swimmers immediately to their starting positions. On the Starter s command, Take your Marks, competitors will immediately take up their starting positions with at least one foot at the front of the starting platform, and in the case of a backstroke event their starting position in the water, and REMAIN STATIONARY. When all competitors are stationary, the Starter will give the starting signal. ONE START RULING (in accordance with the NSW Swimming Digest). After the false start any swimmer starting before the starting signal has been given shall be disqualified and not

permitted to swim. If the starting signal sounds before the disqualification is declared, the race shall continue and the swimmer/s shall be disqualified upon the completion of the race. If the disqualification is declared before the starting signal, the starting signal shall not be given, but the remaining swimmer/s shall be called back, be reminded by the starter of the penalties and start again. A false start will not disqualify a swimmer from Club Night but will disqualify a swimmer from BBASC Championships. Also, this ruling exposes swimmers to the correct procedures followed at Club, State and higher levels of competition. Competitors must finish in the lane in which they start and are to remain in their lanes at the finish of the event. On the signal from the Referee, competitors are to leave the water by the side of the pool. In a 100/200/400m Individual Medley event the sequence of strokes is Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle. In a 75m Individual Medley the sequence of strokes is Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle. Club Championships Club Championships are held at the end of the summer season over two club nights. This is different to point score as each swimmer is racing against their peers rather than points for improvement. Club Championships determine the fastest swimmers in each age/gender group. It is the intention of the club to encourage all swimmers to compete in all events offered in the relevant age group in Club Championships. To be eligible for an award, a swimmer MUST swim in at least 50% (8 nights) of point score club nights during the summer season. Members who have not met the attendance criteria may still compete as an exhibition swimmer and will not be entitled to an award. Please note: Club night attendance will be included when a swimmer is representing Bay & Basin Amateur Swim Club at Country/State/Nationals on a Friday or Saturday. We are outsourcing the position of Referee, Judge of Stroke and Inspector of Turns to alleviate any issues that arise with decisions from disqualification, as disqualifications may happen at Club Championships. Results are NOT to be provided to swimmers until Presentation Night at the conclusion of the Summer Season where swimmers are awarded for their efforts. Entering Club Championships Swimmers enter by completing an entry form two weeks prior to the end of the season. Entry forms will be available online via the BBASC website, TeamApp and at club nights. The fee is $10 per swimmer for the two nights and must be paid at the time of entry no refunds. Age is determined as at the first day of the Championships. Entries and payments will NOT be accepted on the day of Club Championships. Club Championship Events Club Championship events are held according to age group and gender and may be conducted as mixed events. The following events are the events offered for our Club Championships:! DOLPHINS 4 6 Age Group: 15m or 25m of each stroke - freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke & butterfly (longer event of 25m is worth twice the number of points than the 15m event).! PRE JUNIOR 7-8 Age Group: 25m or 50m of each stroke - freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke & butterfly (longer event of 50m is worth twice the number of points than the 25m event), a 50m freestyle distance and a 75m Individual Medley.! JUNIOR 9-10 Age Group: 50m of each stroke - freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke & butterfly, 100m freestyle distance and a 100m Individual Medley.! INTERMEDIATE Age Group: 50m of each stroke - freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke & butterfly, 100m freestyle distance and a 200m Individual Medley.! Attending Carnivals and Swim Meets BBASC is a member of the South Eastern Swimming Association (SESA). The area takes in over 25 clubs from Helensburgh in the north to Eden on the Far South Coast, and extending to Cooma and Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains. Financial members are able to compete at carnivals and swim meets. Carnivals are listed on the South Eastern Swimming Association (SESA) website and on BBASC website. Below are the different levels of competition which provide swimmers of all ability levels opportunities to participate. Development Carnivals Are restricted to those swimmers who have not reached the qualification standards for Country, State and National levels. They are designed to encourage new swimmers to compete against swimmers of similar abilities, so they gain confidence in a racing environment with the emphasis on participation and having FUN. Swimmers are rarely disqualified at development carnivals but officials may speak to them if they have done something wrong. Swimmers should not be upset by this; it is so they will learn and improve. Swimmers should tell their coach anything an official tells them to guide their future training. Qualifying Carnivals Often have standards or set times that you need to meet in order to swim. Officials at qualifying carnivals will disqualify swimmers for incorrect starts, strokes, turn and finishes. D1/D2 This program is for both Development and Qualifying swimmers. There will be qualifying times that you need to achieve to swim in a D1 heat, if you haven't achieved the time then you are eligible to swim in a D2 heat. This type of program allows for more inclusion for all swimmers. D1 is run exactly like a qualifying carnival and disqualification may occur. D2 is run exactly like a development carnival and rule tolerances applies. It is advised to enter early as some carnivals close early once entry limits have been reached. How to enter a Carnival To enter a carnival you need a credit card and your swimmers log on details. Go to and follow the links on the Carnival page to enter. If you have any issues please contact a committee member who will be more than happy to help. What you should take to the carnival Make sure you bring along with you:! Towels! Racing goggles, plus a spare! Swimming cap, plus a spare cap if you have one! Your swimmers

! Food & Drinks! Chairs, rug & shade! Clothing to keep you warm/cool depending on the weather! Sunscreen, hat and good sun protective clothing! Highlighter, permanent marker, pens.! Most carnivals have a BBQ so please support the host club. On the day of the swimming carnival! Get there on time to do a warm up.! Bring a highlighter to highlight your events in the program, which you will be able to be purchase on arrival or print out before attending if ed out.! Keep your eye on the Claims Board a noticeboard that lets you know what is the current event swimming, and which event is being asked to go to the marshalling area to see when your events are approaching.! If you wish to withdraw from an event ensure that you notify the marshall early! Get your cap and goggles ready and report to the marshalling area for your upcoming race.! Be ready to race before getting to the blocks. During carnivals we like our swimmers and families to all sit together. It also helps swimmers to get to know each other and there is less likelihood of a swimmer missing an event if they see swimmers in their age group getting ready to move to the marshaling area. Carnivals are run by volunteers. A carnival needs people from all clubs attending to help out. At carnivals our club will be called on to do timekeeping. To share the workload, a roster will be worked out on the day. By signing up to a carnival you are also committing to timekeeping. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Our Annual General Meeting will be held on 18 th May 2018 in the Bay & Basin Leisure Centre Creche at 4.30pm. This is a great opportunity for parents to get involved at a decision making level in your childs club. Please volunteer your time as the committee always welcomes new ideas and any help offered. PRESENTATION NIGHT Our Presentation Night will be held in the afternoon on Saturday 26 th May 2018 after the conclusion of our summer season and all results have been compiled. This is a great night for our club and we recognise all our hard working swimmers with ribbons, certificates, medals and trophies for their well deserved efforts. All families should attend this event to see the great achievements of our swimmers.
