3 Season Preview The University of Kansas swimming and diving team is coming off a season where the team compiled a 7-5 mark in dual meets and finished fourth at the Big 12 Championships. The team has great expectations entering the season. The Jayhawks have a strong roster, returning 14 letterwinners among six seniors, nine juniors, and eight sophomores. Ten freshmen join the team for what should be an exciting year for Kansas Swimming and Diving. "This year will be a challenge," said head coach Clark Campbell. "We lost 100 points from our Big 12 team last year but we have people who can come in and get the points back and maybe more. This is going to be an exciting year. We are untested with a new team but we have the work ethic and the mentality to achieve a lot." Freestyle - Sprint Freshman Ashley Leidigh will lead the Jayhawks in the freestyle sprint events. Leidigh was the best Kansas state high schooler in the freestyle events "Ashley is under a lot of pressure this year but she has the talent," said Campbell. "We expect big things out of her but also want to give her the ability to develop." Senior Lindsey Urbatchka, junior Jenny Short, and sophomore Lauren Bonfe will be looked to this season to continue their success from last year. The three swimmers scored at the Big 12 Championships helping the Jayhawks to a fourth place finish. Junior Kristi Hansen will add depth for the Jayhawks in the freestyle events. Sophomores Anne Liggett and Terry Schramka each had great range in the freestyle relay events and will be looked upon to compete in the freestyle sprint events. Freestyle - Middle Distance Senior Gina Gnatzig and Schramka will lead Kansas in these events. Both scored at the Big 12 Tournament and will add leadership and talent to the event. Adding depth to the freestyle middle distance events is sophomore Lindsay Herre. Newcomers Whitney Winslow and Jessica Brozek, both high school state champions, will add depth to the 200 freestyle. "We will be much stronger depth-wise in the middle distance events," said Campbell. "Lindsay Herre grew fast as a freshman and had a tremendous showing at the Big 12 Championship." Freestyle - Distance Junior Lia Pogioli will lead the Jayhawks in the freestyle distance events this season. Pogioli spent the summer training and is ahead of the game for her career. Freshmen Molly Brammer and Kendall Matous will be looked upon to add depth this season. Right off the bat, Brammer will be a top eight contender in the distance races. Matous has improved a great deal in the last 12 months and is expected to help the team a great deal. Butterfly Linsdey Urbatchka was a finalist at the Big 12 Championships last season and junior Captains: Seniors Emily Rusch and Gina Gnatzig Lauren Bonfe helped the Jayhawks to a fourth place finish by scoring at the conference tournament. Both Jayhawks have spent a lot of time preparing for the season and are primed for a great year. Leidigh was a top 10 high school swimmer in the 100 fly and is expected to be the top freshman in the event. Junior Emily Rusch is expected to contend in the butterfly event after making the transition to the fly last season. Junior Tricia Tindall stepped up in the fly event last year for the Jayhawks and will be competitive. Junior Emily Knopp was a surprise last season for the Jayhawks, scoring at the Big 12 Championships. Sophomores Sierra Slavin and Kendall Matous will be contenders in the butterfly sprint events. Backstroke Junior Jenny Short qualified for the NCAA Championships last season and Schramka and Gnatzig will be solid for the Jayhawks in the 200 back. "Jenny Short is a great swimmer," said 3 Campbell. "She is getting better each day and there is no telling how far she will go this season." Senior Megan Boecker, sophomores Allie Rubino and Bonfe each scored last season at the Big 12 Championships and will add depth to the backstroke events. Urbatchka will also be a contender in the backstroke events. Breaststroke Sophomore Nikki Maples and junior Lisa Tilson will lead a dynamic group of freshmen this season in the breaststroke events. Freshman Shanna Bradbury is a gifted swimmer that will improve with competition. Freshmen Rhynn Malloy and Danielle Herrmann have great speed and will be competitive in the breaststroke events this year. "The breaststroke will be a young and exciting event for us this year," said Campbell. "Nikki Maples and Lisa Tilson both have great work ethic and leadership skills to do great things this year." Individual Medley Rusch will be the go-to swimmer in the individual medley. In her three seasons at Kansas she has been a steady, solid performer. Joining Rusch will be Brammer and Bradbury. Brammer has a solid stroke and unlimited potential. Bradbury must learn to put strokes together and attack so she can improve her time. The Jayhawks will be getting help from Gina Gnatzig, Nikki Maples, Rhynn Malloy and Danielle Herrmann. Diving Second year diving head coach Eric Elliott is taking on a diving team that lost no seniors to graduation. Leading the way for the Jayhawks will be redshirt junior, Jenny Roberts. Roberts was the lone qualifier for the Jayhawks last season to the NCAA Zone Diving meet. Roberts will once again be one of the top scorers for the team and will look to have another strong season on the boards. Joining Roberts will be seniors Casey Topol and Robyn Karlage. Personal: Born Feb. 9, 1987 Parents are Chip and Karen Winslow Excerise Science major. When did you know that you wanted to be a Jayhawk swimmer? I actually signed late, so my signing was in April (of 2001). I am really indecisive so I didn t go on any trips until February. I went on all my five trips and Kansas was my second to last and on my last trip I said, Kansas has this or Kansas has that and I didn t even realize I was doing it, and then I knew that I wanted to go to Kansas. Why did you choose Kansas? I chose Kansas because the team made me feel so welcome. I fit right in and I just knew that I wanted to swim here. When I was getting a tour of the Athletic Department everyone was so friendly and they made me feel like I could step right in and be a Jayhawk. You are welcomed wherever you go in the Athletics Department. What was your most memorable moment as a Kansas Jayhawk? Probably at North Carolina last season ( ), when we swam our invitational there. I just had an awsome meet. Everything just fell into place there, my parents were there and the whole team gets to go to that meet. That is where I made my first NCAA cut and all the stuff that it led up to. What was your time like at Kansas? It was pretty great. It was a whole team and family. It made college easier because I had this whole support group to go with it. You have bad days and you have good days, but no matter what your team is always here for you. I just think it was very supportive and it made college easier. It was fun. The training is hard but it is just fun to be a part of something that is so big and means so much to you. What advice would you have for future Jayhawk swimmers? When you go on your recruiting trips and you come to KU or anywhere you go, see where you fit in. You have to be comfortable. You have to decide; could you go to school here if you didn t have swimming. You have to take everything in and be open minded. Don t take things for granted. How did the coaching staff here at Kansas make you feel comfortable and provide a learning atmosphere? The coaches are very good about being individual. They focus on things that you need. They will say that the team is going to do something but if they see that you are struggling they will pull you aside and tell you what you need to work on and what you don t need to work on. Stuff like that was really helpful. They are so supportive, if you do bad or do good they are always there for you. They are always holding you up or pushing you along. They will push you to where they know you can do better and they are always helping you reach your potential. 15

22 Kansas Athletics Administration Lew Perkins Athletics Director L e w Perkins' first year as KU's director of athletics was marked by grand success - both on the field of play and in the classroom. Consider the following: 86 Jayhawk student-athletes earned academic All-Big 12 honors. Four student-athletes were named to academic All-America teams. 54 Jayhawk student-athletes were named to All-Big 12 teams. Six University of Kansas student-athletes earned All-America honors. 226 (55 percent) of KU's student-athletes were named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (3.0 grade-point average or better) during the Spring of of those student-athletes earned perfect 4.0 GPA's. In addition, KU's student-athletes recorded their best academic performance in department history last spring, boasting a 2.98 overall GPA. Several teams achieved their highest GPA's ever, including swimming and diving (3.39), rowing (3.39) and soccer (3.28). On the playing field, the results were just as outstanding. Head coach Mark Mangino, in only his second season, guided his much-improved football team to the 2003 Mazda Tangerine Bowl. New head coach Bill Self took over a men's basketball team that had lost two NBA lottery picks and produced an Elite Eight appearance in the 2004 NCAA tournament. The KU's women's soccer team advanced all the way to the 2003 NCAA tournament Sweet 16, and the women's volleyball team made its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, beating perennial national power Long Beach State to reach the second round of the 2003 tournament. In addition, alumni and friends have made donations to the KU Williams Educational Fund at record levels. Those donations will assist in one of Perkins' primary goals - to ensure that student-athletes on all of KU's teams get the support they need to be competitive not only athletically in the Big 12 Conference and nationally, but also in the classroom. Success is nothing new to Lew Perkins. Prior to being named KU's athletics director in June 2003, he achieved unprecedented success as director of athletics at the University of Connecticut for 13 years. He was instrumental in guiding UConn athletics to impressive growth, both athletically and academically. During his tenure, UConn won six NCAA National Championships, including four in women's basketball, and one each in men's basketball and men's soccer. In his 13 years a total of 61 Husky squads earned NCAA Division I Tournament berths, and UConn claimed 64 Big East Conference regular season and tournament championships. In addition, Perkins worked tirelessly to upgrade UConn's football program to NCAA Division I-A status. He was instrumental in the State of Connecticut's decision to provide funding for the construction of a $90-million, 40,000- seat stadium, which opened in August of The Huskies began competing in the Big East Football Conference in 2004, making UConn the only school ever to leap from Division I-AA to a BCS Conference. Under Perkins' direction, UConn's athletic fund-raising reached the $10 million mark in each of his last four years there. The UConn Club reached new heights with more than 5,300 members, and Connecticut's expanding endowed scholarship program also continued to grow. Perkins was honored in 2000 as the inaugural winner of the National Athletic Director of the Year Award as selected by Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal, in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Perkins serves on the NCAA Basketball Issues Committee, and recently completed terms on two other prestigious NCAA committees, the Championships & Competition Cabinet and the Bowl Certification Committee. In 2004 CBS Sportsline.com named him one of the 50 most influential people in college football. Perkins grew up in Massachusetts and was a highly recruited high-school basketball star. He played college basketball at the University of Iowa ( ) for Hall of Fame coach and KU graduate Ralph Miller. From 1969 to 1980, Perkins served as Director of Athletics at the University of South Carolina at Aiken, as that institution grew from a junior college to a four-year institution. He also was head basketball coach at USC-Aiken from He received his 22 master's degree in education in 1975 from the University of South Carolina. From , Perkins served as Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Pennsylvania. He then served as Director of Athletics at Wichita State University from and at the University of Maryland from He was inducted into his high school Hall of Fame in 1989, and was honored in his hometown of Chelsea, Mass. Perkins' wife, Gwen, earned both an undergraduate degree from Iowa and a master's degree in education from the University of South Carolina. She served in public education for the East Hartford (Conn.) School System. Lew and Gwen have two daughters -- Amy Macneill, a 1993 graduate of the University of Maryland (married to Brandon Macneill), and Holly Halligan, a 1996 graduate of the University of Connecticut (married to Tom Halligan). They are the proud grandparents of one granddaughter, Caroline Macneill, born in Pam Byrn Administrative Assistant Pam Byrn has worked at the University of Kansas for 32 years, 23 of those in the athletic department. She has three sons and three daughters-in-law, John and Shelly, Mike and Amy, and Bill and Michelle, in addition to six grandchildren. John and Mike played baseball at KU, while Bill played for Baker University. Shelly was a member of the 1992 KU softball World Series team. In 1981, Marian Washington hired Byrn as the secretary for women s basketball, volleyball, swimming and diving, softball, tennis and the non-revenue training room. During her 21 years, she has also worked for sports information, maintenance and the business office. Byrn, a 1981 graduate of the University of Kansas, returned to swimming and diving in the fall of Kelly Landry Mehrtens Associate Athletics Director- Senior Woman Administrator K e l l y L a n d r y Mehrtens, a former collegiate All- American and the Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator at the University of Illinois, is in her second year in the same capacity at the University of Kansas. 23 Athletic Facilities Robinson Natatorium Anderson Family Strength Center Robinson Natatorium headlines tradition-rich facilities that have helped lift Kansas to national swimming and diving prominence. Opened in 1966, Robinson Natatorium includes a six-lane, 25-yard pool and an eight-lane, 25-meter pool in addition to one-meter, three-meter and platform diving resources. In the infancy of the Kansas swimming and diving program, the Jayhawks used a pool at old Robinson Gymnasium for practice and competition. An expansion program lengthened the pool to 20 yards during the season, however it was still not large enough to accommodate a crowd without the splashing caused by the swimmers. This problem was solved in 1966 with the opening of a pool in the new Robinson Gymnasium. Measuring 25 yards by 25 yards, the six-lane pool included one-meter and three-meter boards. A 1980 expansion added an eight-lane, 25-meter pool for practice purposes. In 1985, the facility was upgraded to include two one-meter and two three-meter diving boards. During the season, a five-meter platform was added, made possible in part by donations from the program s alumni, parents and friends. We have lots of water to practice in, coach Clark Campbell said. We are able to train at the highest level. Kansas is one of the only few schools with a free standing 25M pool. Championship meets are beginning to use that type of pool, so it is a huge competitive advantage to train everyday in a championship situation. Robinson has twice hosted the Big Eight Conference Championships. In 1984, both the men s and women s conference meets were held in Lawrence, with the Jayhawk women capturing their tenth consecutive Big Eight title. Robinson also played host to conference rivals in 1991, as the women s championships came to KU. The Jayhawks also have access to another training facility in town at Lawrence Freestate High School s brand new 50-meter indoor pool. 23 The Anderson Family Strenth and Conditioning Center opened in March The state-of-the-art facility features an array of free weights, exercise machines and workout areas throughout its 42,000 square feet of area. The center is the training facility for all University of Kansas athletic teams. The swimming and diving team uses the center extensively for its dry-land training. Many people do not realize how much dry-land training we do as a swimming and diving team, head coach Clark Campbell said. Being able to train in a facility such as the Anderson Center is one of the greatest privileges we have as a team here at the University of Kansas.

24 University of Kansas A Comprehensive Public University Opened in 1866, the University of Kansas is a comprehensive educational and research institution with 28,849 students and more than 2,200 faculty members. KU includes the main campus in Lawrence; the Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.; the Edwards Campus in Overland Park; a clinical campus of the School of Medicine in Wichita; and educational and research facilities throughout the state. Campuses Considered one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation, KU's main campus occupies 1,000 acres on and around Mount Oread in Lawrence, a community of 80,000 among the forested hills of eastern Kansas. The Medical Center occupies 50 acres in nearby metropolitan Kansas City. The Edwards Campus is situated on 38 acres in a suburban Kansas City corridor known for its high-tech manufacturers and laboratories. Colleges KU comprises 14 major academic divisions: the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School, and the schools of Allied Health, Architecture and Urban Design, Business, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Journalism and Mass Communications, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Social Welfare. Academic Achievement Historically, KU students have built an impressive record of scholastic achievement. Two of the nation's most prestigious honorary societies, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi, chartered their first chapters west of the Mississippi at KU. A total of 24 KU students have won Rhodes Scholarships. In 2002, KU ranked third among public research universities in the percentage of students participating in study abroad programs. In , KU faculty won 11 Fulbright grants for international study -- the highest number awarded to faculty at any public or private university. What Others Say About KU The university enjoys a fine national reputation. U.S. News and World Report ranks KU among the top 50 public universities in the nation. The most recent edition of Peterson's Guide to Competitive Colleges reports that KU "has a long and distinguished tradition as one of America's premier universities." Another popular college guidebook, The Fiske Guide to Colleges, for more than a decade has awarded KU a four-star rating for academics, social life and overall quality of university life. Degrees The largest of the Kansas Regents institutions, KU annually grants one-third of the bachelor's and master's degrees and two-thirds of the doctorates for Regents schools. Culture The Lawrence campus offers a rich cultural life. Lecturers, scholars, artists, concert musicians, actors and dancers perform at the university's beautiful Lied Center of Kansas, a 2,020-seat performing arts hall. Nearby is the 250-seat Bales Organ Recital Hall. With a 72-foot high ceiling and two-foot thick walls, the hall provides cathedral-like acoustics for its three-manual pipe organ, built by Hellmuth Wolff. The Spencer Museum of Art, with more than 17,000 works of art, has long been considered one of the top teaching museums in the nation. In the summer of 2003, KU s majestic Dole Institute of Politics opened. Among the treasures of this civic cathedral are state-of-theart exhibits, a World Trade Center memorial, the world s largest stained glass American flag and a memory wall honoring World War II veterans. Location and Campus Lawrence (population 80,098) is known for arts, alternative music, downtown shops, galleries and restaurants. The campus sits on 1,000 acres. KU has a national reputation for collections at the Spencer Museum of Art and its Natural History Museum. The Lied Center, KU s performing arts center, attracts both national and international acts. Student Life More than 400 clubs and organizations are run by KU students. Support services throughout campus help students succeed. Visit or for more information. Visit KU Check out the many visit options available by visiting calling , or ing visit@ku.edu. Research Research is an integral part of the university's educational activity. During fiscal year 2002, KU faculty secured $243 million in research funding. The ripple effect of that funding is estimated to contribute $900 million to the Kansas economy. KU is one of only 32 public universities to belong to the American Association of Universities, a select group of higher education institutions in the United States and Canada. Members are chosen on the basis of national significance in graduate studies and research. 24 Academic All-Americans Kansas Swimmers have always performed well both in the classroom and out, as 14 swimmers and divers have been Academic All-Americans.
