Learn to Play Tennis in Minutes The Ultimate Guide to Teach Yourself Tennis! Lesson ineteen The Advanced Forehand and Backhand Drive Volleys Vertical Power By Andrew Magrath & John Littleford Modern Tennis International Limited Momentum by Design
The Advanced Forehand and Backhand Drive Volley In Minutes Introduction Y es this book can teach you to improve these shots in minutes! Not weeks, not months or years but here today. All you need is a partner, some tennis balls, a couple of racquets and of course, a tennis court! This guide will allow you to learn as you teach your partner, friend or child whoever they maybe. Tennis is really an easy game to play but has been complicated over the years by over choreographed coaching. You will see as you go through this guide that tennis is truly a wonderful and simple game to play and learn. Take the ball out of the air and hit with power and control making sure you follow through Copyright Modern Tennis International 2008 Page 2 of 9
Please do not think that learning to improve your shots means that we will take you on a complicated and convoluted technical rollercoaster. Please be assured that every drill, just like the beginner to improver course has an aim to allow you to perform and improve naturally. We have a saying that we very much adhere to: Advancement is simplification, not complication! Copyright Modern Tennis International 2008 Page 3 of 9
Let s get on court, but before we do here are some tips before we begin: The following steps are easy progressions to improve your game and it is crucial that you follow them and DO NOT miss any out - or your game will not blossom as it should Please note that even the top players re-take these steps to find their rhythm again During the tuition one of you will become the student and the other will become the coach. You will reverse roles as you progress through these simple steps Please take your time and make sure you fully grasp each step as you move along If followed in the steps provided, you will find your natural tennis talent - and believe as we do - that TENNIS is truly a simple game to play Copyright Modern Tennis International 2008 Page 4 of 9
So let s take the The Forehand and Backhand Drive Volley to the next level! Step 1 - What is a Drive Volley? The drive volley is essentially a topspin shot, taken before the bounce. It is designed to be an aggressive tactic, giving the opponent very little time to react, instead of waiting for the ball to bounce. This shot is normally played when a player, playing from the back of the court has forced their opponent into a desperate lunge for the ball which is arching high and fairly short over the net. The aggressor would advance to the dropping ball and take the ball out the air with a drive volley. Some people call this shot a swing volley or even a topspin volley Copyright Modern Tennis International 2008 Page 5 of 9
Step 2 - The Forehand Drive Volley Start on the baseline. Get your partner to feed 10 balls up into the air, so they would drop around the service line area. As you see the ball rise, move forwards down the court whilst tracking the ball as you would for a topspin forehand. When the ball is at shoulder height, play a topspin forehand in your normal fashion. Because it is a short ball that you are dealing with, then remember to cover the ball! Copyright Modern Tennis International 2008 Page 6 of 9
Step 3 - The Backhand Drive Volley Repeat on the backhand side. Feel free to use your normal one or two handed topspin back hand action. Copyright Modern Tennis International 2008 Page 7 of 9
Step 4 - Mixing it Up Now get your opponent to mix the feeds up. This shot can be a lot of fun. Step 5 - Play Points Once you have both had a go, then feed alternately and play out the point. This is great fun and a great work out! Copyright Modern Tennis International 2008 Page 8 of 9
Congratulations! You have now completed the drive volley syllabus. This should have taken you around 20 to 30 minutes to complete all the progressions. Now you have familiarised yourself with this syllabus, feel free to re-visit again and again to really perfect each type of shot. The next thing to do is to study our DVD to see how you can practice the drive volley within a realistic game! The next technical e book is the forehand and backhand close volley. SEE YOU ON COURT!
